Raby is without doubt one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England. Built in the 14th century by the powerful Neville family, it has a long history. Home to Cecily Neville, mother of two kings of England, it was also the scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North.
Raby Castle is a medieval castle located near Staindrop in County Durham, England, among 200 acres (810,000 m2) of deer park. It was built by John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville de Raby, between approximately 1367 and 1390.
The castle is still a private home and remains the seat of the Vane family, the Barons Barnard. The 11th Baron carried out an extensive programme of renovation and restoration after inheriting the barony in 1964.
In 1378 Thomas Hatfield Bishop of Durham granted John de Neville a licence to fortify his property at Raby. John died in 1388 and was succeeded by his son, Ralph. Almost nothing of the family's papers survive from this period so there is little documentary evidence of Raby Castle's construction. The dating is based mostly on architectural details. In the words of historian Anthony Emery, the work "converted it from a defendable house into a palace-fortress".
The original defensive purposes of Raby Castle is emphasized by the fact that the only entrance is through a fortified gateway accessed by a narrow path across a moat. However, the moat has long been converted to a lake, and the curtain wall reduced to a simple parapet.
Raby was soon to suffer much graver damage from family squabbles than the damage caused by war. Lord Barnard, the grandson of the elder Henry Vane, was so angered by his son Gilbert's marriage that he took steps to demolish the building so that Gilbert could never enjoy his inheiritance.Lord Barnard pulled up floors, stripped lead from the roof, and sold furniture from Raby. Gilbert was forced to bring a lawsuit to stop his father's actions, though Lord Barnard still managed to kill all the deer in the park and cut down most of the trees.
Herds of red and fallow deer again live wild in the Park.
This Castle was named after the Viking settlements, which were established in the region around the 11th Century.
The construction of this Castle took twenty-three years of labour.
The formal gardens are currently closed for renovation and upgrade so no film of those unfortunately although there is footage on my channel from a number of years ago of the original layout.
The Plotters Forest is the latest addition to the Castle grounds, this is an adventure play area for children. see link for more information.

    AND FINALLY ..............
    THE RABY GHOSTS
Raby Castle is reputedly haunted by three ghosts. The spectre of Charles Neville is seen in the Baron's Hall, where in 1569 he plotted the rebellion known as the Rising of the North. The headless ghost of Henry Vane the Younger haunts the library, and the first Lady Barnard stalks the halls knitting with white-hot needles, seething over the memory of her son Gilbert, who dared to marry against her wishes.
Sheeesh! those Ghosts get everywhere :)

Greetings from Canada Ray! 🍁 I have no idea how I missed noticing this post! Raby Castle is a pure visual treat. What a fantastic entranceway into the castle that then takes you to a such a welcoming courtyard. The interior is stunning no matter which room you’re in, even the kitchen! Loved the stagecoach and especially loved the standing candelabras in the library. (my fave) What I’d give to look at all the artwork. This castle is so well maintained and holds such an amazing history. The grounds and surrounding area are equally impressive, peaceful and serene. How lucky for the Neville family descendants that have the privilege of residing there. I’ve said it before Ray, every bit of creativity and talent that you put into your videos gives the viewer an immersive experience. Thanks so much for taking me away for a short while to this magical place. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one again. 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️😊take care! 👋

Hi Jill 😃🤗 it is a fantastic place to visit for both young and old (and inbetweenies) 🤣 a full day is needed to take everything in. The castle is in amazing condition, in fact it becomes so easy to take yourself back in time and pretend it is centuries earlier than we live in. The content in this building is incredible and that room with the golden ceiling is breathtaking, I certainly wouldn’t want to be the decorator 🤣 I’d be there for years hahaha. Many of those paintings are huge, getting them up there must have been a real challenge. Walking the grounds shows how imposing this castle is, imagine riding up to it hundreds of years ago.
I’m so happy that you enjoyed this one and as always thank you for such a wonderful review with beautiful comments, you are such a special Lady 😊🤗❤️🥰

@@Raybo1uk awww. Thanks Ray. It’s England that’s so very special. Some castles are truly dark and creepy. Raby is none of that. She’s a beauty. Can’t believe I missed seeing this treasure when I was right there, staying in County Durham with my nana no less. In regards to the painting, yes. It wasn’t until I went to The National Gallery in London that I realized just how enormous some of these paintings are. Some covering entire walls. The talent is mind blowing. Not too long ago I came across the show Phil Spencer’s Stately Homes and it was interesting to learn about how much work goes into cleaning these places. Great show. I’m going to revisit that series again too. Working in one of those places in any capacity would have been a dream job to me. Thanks again for the time travels. Bye for now Ray! 👋❤️

Absolutely mind boggling how they can even paint on canvas 🤣 my brush would be more like a sweeping brush 😂 very talented people. Ah yes I think I remember that show but can’t say I ever watched it, but cleaning and keeping clean everything in those places must be a nightmare, and even protecting furniture, curtains and of course paintings from UV rays must be very difficult. Apparently that’s one reason they don’t allow flash photography in many places due to the light fading stuff 🤷‍♂️ I hope all is well there, I’ve seen all the fires and thought of you, wishing and hoping you are safe 🙏🏻🤗❤️

@@Raybo1uk hi Ray. Thankfully, I’m ok where I am. We’ve had many days where you can’t see the sky due to smoke from fires from adjacent provinces or up north. Lots of air quality warnings. Only a couple of days where it was really bad, like fog and you couldn’t see in front of you. I’m in central Canada. It’s been mostly the west coast, east coast and just recently the Northwest Territories. The territories are screwed. They simply don’t have the resources to fight the fires. Canada has literally been on fire since spring. It’s heartbreaking. Hope all is well with you also. Take of yourself. 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️✌️🙃

It must be devastating for those who have lost everything my heart goes out to them all ❤️ I’m glad you are safe but always be vigilant… fires can start when you least expect it, be safe Jill 🤗❤️🙏🏻

Possibly not a bad idea although they would then probably get a load of claims from people claiming they slipped on them and fell etc….. can’t win really
