  • The Kitchissippi Museum presents: A series of rare home video recordings - "Riding the Rails in the NCR (Ottawa) in the 1960s".
All recordings by and courtesy of Bruce Chapman.
Please see my other videos for more videos recorded by Bruce Chapman in the 1960s.
This video is from Spring 1966 (the caption at the beginning of the video states April 12th, but that may have been a note for another portion of the footage).
In this incredible video, Bruce Chapman provides the viewer with an incredible opportunity - to experience what a train ride was like, travelling from Union Station in downtown Ottawa, across the Alexandra Bridge to Hull, then back over the Prince of Wales Bridge to Bayview station (trains had to cross to Hull and come back over in order to travel west within Ottawa). This footage is filmed from the front of the engine (engine 1403). At the end the train reaches Bayview Road, then switches tracks and backs into the yard at Ottawa West station (where Tom Brown Arena stands today).
Note there is no audio on any of the videos, this is consistent with all of the footage filmed by Bruce. Any jumps/gaps in the filming are on the original recordings (Bruce told me that reels would only be a certain length - maybe 30 or 60 seconds, and once used up, he would need to stop and put on a new reel).

This was filmed on the day I was born at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa. Very cool to see.

This is absolutely amazing historical context. Thanks for the recording and posting it!
As someone who grew up in Ottawa and now moving to Hull, it's amazing to think of what was and what could have been.

One of my favourite videos for reliving the past. I travelled on The Canadian twice out of old Union Station, which probably sparked my love of trains. I remember as a kid riding over the Alexandra bridge by car and the sound of the tires over the metal grate roadway. We called it the airplane bridge because of the sound. BTW, does anyone know where Hull Beemer Station was located?

Interesting! Too bad that line doesn't exist anymore - would have been useful as part of the new LRT project.

What a disappointment that they couldn’t keep it around. That’s a perfect loop for two growing cities, so scenic, and yet here we are decades later trying to restore some semblance of what we had a long time ago.

Excellent way to see how a ride on the rails was in 1966. The date at the start has to be wrong though, April 12 in Ottawa never looks like mid summer! August 12 perhaps....a great video nonetheless.

It is so interesting to see what Ottawa looked like when it had the railroads downtown then way before I was born. Do they still have the railway tracks in Hull or have they been removed?

So cool! Never realized the rail was elevated through Hull after crossing the bridge. What a great perspective, thank you for posting!

The urban landscape looked really shabby in those days compared to today.

What was the overpass used for right after the Prince of Wales bridge?

That appears to be the Ottawa River Parkway overpass under construction at the time. Now called Sir John A Parkway. Overpass still there.
