  • Splinter bids are very useful, both in response to 1 of a suit, or as opener's rebid if partner has responded Jacoby 2NT. This video takes a look at whether you should make a splinter bid if your singleton is an honour.
Normal Splinter tinyurl.com/26... 26 combined points
    Splintering with an ace tinyurl.com/2x...
Splintering with a singleton king - a wasted value tinyurl.com/2y...
Same hand - should end in just 4S tinyurl.com/2b... North has 7 ½ losers
You would need a stronger hand to splinter with a wasted value as the singleton tinyurl.com/2q... - and this would be same if the singleton is a queen or jack.
    Jacoby 2NT - tinyurl.com/2n... shows a splinter
If you show your ace splinter tinyurl.com/2j... - goes down 1
Don’t show the singleton ace as a splinter - just show a bare minimum (6 ½ losers) tinyurl.com/2l...
Also if you splinter with an ace, your partner may downgrade their K 10 x tinyurl.com/2h...
Perhaps use Jacoby 2NT instead tinyurl.com/2f...

Wonderfully clear explanations and example hands as usual!

At 31:00, this is clearly a case for having controls directly showing second round controls. So, north bids 4D after south's 3NT, which is a slam try and control in diamond and missing control in clubs. South has control in all the other suits so bids 4NT, north responds 5H and south bids 6S, knowing we have control in all suits and only missing one keycard.

I do agree that cuebidding to show 2nd round controls is (also) a good system, and will allow you to bid more slams. However, I think most intermediate players would find this quite confusing - cuebidding 1st round controls is tough enough for many players.

I had a doubt: does a Splinter need to show four card support or is that only for ACOL? A one of a Major would normally show a 5 carder suit, so would three card support do for a Splinter?

Most descriptions of splinters would say that you need 4 card support, even if you are playing five card majors. I did come across one description that said you can splinter with a good three card suit if you are playing five card majors.
