Thanks for making me feel better about the BBC Master 128 I stopped fixing in January 2021, Jan. I'll now give myself until the end of the year to get it done. 👍
This video confirms my sanity. I saw your part 1 a few months ago and searched all the videos for your part 2 thinking I lost my mind. It felt good to get closure. Happy you fixed it!
I've only just discovered your channel and watched Part 1 of this repair a few days before you posted Part 2. For me then, the viewing experience was perfect! Thank you Jan!
I'm so glad you got this working. I don't know how rare the Aldi 64's are, but I really like the aesthetic, it looks really smart. And I'm sure to you it is quite precious. Well done for keeping these machines going and saved from the landfill.
Lovely to see a system put to one side and after a few years remembered, then finally put it to bed. Keep keeping these machines alive man, they're worth every second it takes ;)
Two years - I know what this means as it took me several years to fix one 250425 and a c128d. Finally I could do it with the great help of the C64 Forum (forum64). It’s a great feeling to turn the machines on working perfectly.
Love this channel. I think you're very quick with the desoldering gun. I have the cheapest store brand version, I have to heat for 3s or more (depending on trace width) before the solder melts enough to suck it in. Results is usually clean enough to gently pry/drag it off - unless it falls out. If a pin is still stuck, some fresh solder and a new run with the desolder gun will fix it. Hot air and desoldering braid looks like a lot of extra work. ;-)
Great video! I'm glad you started appearing in your videos again, I enjoy this format a lot more, nice to know there's a person there and not just a set of floating hands!
Well done Jan, stepping away ( even years ) can be a good thing. For traces / board inspections you might invest in a digital cam/scope ( HDMI ) they seem to make this sorta stuff easier.
Great that you’re using some ESD measures!! You can improve it a bit more with an appropriate ION generator if you use plastics and other insulators in your workspace.
13:45 - The C64 shortboard doesn't run anywhere near as hot as the longboard, i don't think heatsinks are necessary. It's a much better design than the longboard. But getting rid of that crappy cardboard RF shield is a good idea, as that thing is a heat trap (and until like the metal shields isn't connected to any of the chips to remove any heat from them)
Those sockets Commodore used are the equivalent of hot garbage left to bake out in the sun. I've been working on a few C128's lately and it's gotten to the point where I just assume they're bad and replace all the sockets with machined pin sockets while I'm in there doing whatever work needs to be done. I was finding that the dodgy sockets would cause all sorts of issues ranging from the Kernal ROMs randomly not working, the VDC not working when trying to use one of those solderless 64k VDC memory expansion boards (or would work but would lose connection after the machine heated up), black screens, random crashes, etc. Yeah it takes some work to unsolder them and put the better quality ones in but it's worth it in the long run.
I'm curious to know if the control port test will pass with a real SID or ARMSID installed as the other 4066 may still be bad. I believe it is only used for the pot inputs so it won't be obvious until you go to use a paddle or mouse
Hi Jan The proof that you got better after 2 years I would say Jan this is the proof. Beautiful machines that Aldi types. I don't have one only breatbin's and c64c It is very good that you throw away those cardboard useless things, It always only ensure higher temperatures in the chips and board. 😁
I can't believe it. I waited all this time. It bugged me a lot that you didn't fix it, it was your best video. I mean the first part, I commented and didn't watch it yet.
Love your work! You have no mercy, you take no prisoners. I have a c64c in similar state, you gave me some hope but I need tons of parts I do not have :/
Nice work bud, there is nothing wrong with taking a break and come back to it whenever:) I had a problem with a Cia u1 with sometimes the the keyboard worked but when I wiggled it... it'd be fine. After swapping chips and walking away for a few months... it was the socket. Not the chip. Lol
Huzzah, result. Congratulations Jan. Also, am I imagining it or did you try some nice new camera angles when working on the board in this video ? they looked great 👍
Did you ever learn the answer to why Diagnostics shows bad for the SID or 4066@U28? I finally did for mine, I bet it is for yours too. I had this same problem on a C64C that I own and had been pulling my hair out. I found that someone pointed out to Sven (on his Github "issues" for the harness) to change the resistors at R1, R2, R5, R6 (on the user port, for the joystick ports) from 120K to 110K which fixes the mis-diagnosis for newer boards (but continues to work correctly on older boards). In his old schematics, the resistors are 120K. In his newer schematics they are 110K because of this issue.
I thought you got that running. All I know is every time I drive by an Aldi I do think of your C64 and if someone is with me in the car I will say something like "Hey did you know Aldi use to sell Commodore 64's in Germany?"
Your aptily and deligintly could make... it .all I can say Germany 🇩🇪always Great....Greman are smart people. I'm sending you a suloute from Kingdom of Bahrain 🇧🇭. Stay safe. Have a great time.
at this point it might be worth it to socket the last 2 chips and have a "future" proof computer. nearly anything that could go wrong in the future would be an easy fix.

I always say... never give up on a Commodore 64.... every single one is worth saving! 😃👍
only if there was enough SID chips, or a satisfactory replacement that handles the paddles and sounds the same
just refurbed 1 myself over at pj retro redux
Never give up on a Commodore, because the Commodore is never giving up on you!
@@lucius1976 they give up all the time lol, those MT ram chips!
@@Walczyk Well, the 64 is never giving up on you to fix it then
It's never too late to repair a C64 :) , good work !
I quite like the look of the ALDI breadbin. Classic shape, "modern" colour.

Another C64 alive and kicking, that is all that's important. How long it took is irrelevant. 👍🏻
been waiting for this 2 years some how I know you would not give up on it

Brilliant! You belong on the Mt. Rushmore of Commodore experts. I wish my local Aldi still sold C64's.
Well done for persisting. Sometimes we need to step away from a problem to come back a fresh to find the solution(s).
Love this channel.

I feel you Jan. I still have some old electronics what I wasn't able to fix in more than 5 years. ;)
Great video! I'm glad you started appearing in your videos again, I enjoy this format a lot more, nice to know there's a person there and not just a set of floating hands!

Or some magnifying glasses.
Or some magnifying glasses.
Es ist fast zwei Jahre her??? Good to see it back anyway, always good to see computers work again. Danke Jan!
Sometimes it's good to take a break with fault finding when you just cant find a problem. 2 years might be a bit excessive though ;)
Well done Jan. I remember repairing my first LCD Tv which took 4 months 😄
Great that you’re using some ESD measures!! You can improve it a bit more with an appropriate ION generator if you use plastics and other insulators in your workspace.
Next - the revival of the TRS-80 Series to wrap that on up!! :D
Great troubleshooting and great to see the computer is back in good use!
What a good result. I had completely forgotten about this one. 😊👍
It wasn’t dead, it was just resting. Great to see another retro machine brought back from the dead.
Remarkable system, the C64. Beautiful plumage.
Great video Jan, you looked really happy to have that working again. Well done on yet another successful repair 👍
Well done, Jan. Very satisfying!
I love Galencia, one of my favourite games.

I know this must have been incredibly frustrating, but for your viewers these are incredibly important and informative. Thanks for finishing this. :-)
The best things come to those who wait 👍🏻 Great update
Only took 2 years for repairing that! NEW WORLD RECORD! ;-)
Great video!!!
Greetings, Doc64!
i still remember the first part as it was yesterday , thought you gave up after so much time 🤪 good news Aldi c64 is back 👍

Nice to see another bread bin still working (again).
Great repair! Great endurance on this one! You dont use an air filter or blow-away-thing when soldering, why?
Good stuff. It pays to persevere!
Thank you Jan. Yet another interesting and funny video :-). Keep up the good work!
I'm REALLY satisfied! Now I can sleep through the night. 😃👍
Always enjoy your video's ;) learnt a lot from TH-cam over the years ;)
Great job! Don’t apologize for the delay. One can’t rush into these things. 🤣
Ja wie cool :-D Gut Ding braucht Weile ;-) Klasse, dass er wieder löppt!!!
Hat zugegebenermaßen etwas gedauert. Aber ich bin froh, dass ich‘s endlich geschafft habe! :D
Sehr cool :-)
Nice vid! I am still waiting on our friend to make more C64 RF mod replacements. Over a year now! LOL! I know it's not you sir.

Oh, those sockets are a pain in the butt sometimes! Super difficult to find a fault like that most of the times! Glad you managed to fix it!
I like the colors of this model and the C=64G

New Cam? Great! Greetings from Oldenburg (The one in Germany ;)
Nice work!
An Aldi but a goodie!
That made me laugh just a Lidl bit.
All good things comes to he who waits.... :)
At 5:59 I can see you have a very rare COLLODOSO 74 prototype !
wow this c64 finally fixed, nice work :D sometime they come back for good :D

There's only 67 days left until SepTandy starts. :D

Yey, finally!🤩👍
No worries ! Two years is nothing !
Yes!👍
Is the uninsulated bodge wire shown on the left at 7:41crossing a vertical row of 8 pads soldered to any of those pads?
It’s magnet wire, so it is insulated with a clear plastic. No shorts, I checked it several times.
Heck yeah!!!
Gotta save em all 😀
is it a coincidence the aldi 64 gets fixed on the day i received my aldi delivery? absolutely not ;)
Besser spät als nie!
I brought 2 dead ones back to life after 8 years sitting on them. 2 more to go.
Do you've a new camera? The image quality looks better.
at this point it might be worth it to socket the last 2 chips and have a "future" proof computer. nearly anything that could go wrong in the future would be an easy fix.
PE@DX instead of READY means one stuck bit in the bus...
Is the Aldi C64 considered as a C64G..? I have one 'ere so, I'm kinda curious :D
I think not. Their was the C64G and the C64 Aldi - their are some differences
C64s made with 1983 MOS Technologies ICs = adorable pieces of junk.
Does anyone know if the make new commodore 64C psu in australia
This is weird, I was just watching the old videos about this C64.
This computer name is Persévérance. Baptisé.
another breadbin saved
Definitely an earned Weizen Bier!! Cheers!!
👍🍺
JAN,dico solo una cosa,sei G R A N D E !!
