Great video I have a Hymer 1998 B584 and I am going to give it a go . I like the way you fitted the filler cap....very clever .Do you remember the length of the pigtails and filler hose you ordered it would be really helpful as my gas locker looks the same. Thanks again
Hi, I enjoyed watching your video - neat job! I'm just installing one myself and looking for guidance. Cast your mind back 6 years... Did you use any sealing compound on the flare connection between pipe and filler? I see some experts claiming you should and others claiming that you shouldn't. Confusing!
Hello, at our last trip we had the GAS-IT system also but the filling point was inside the bottle cabinet. There were some gas station refusing to fill our tanks refering "no caravan", but mostly we got our tanks full. Have you experienced anyone denying filling with this system where the filling point is outside?
Good day! Great video!!!! thanks! planning on doing the same project myself. just a quick questions - do I need to shut the bottles off before filling up? do you think the filters are required?
Hi great video thank you .... I’ve just recently fitted same system pressure is very low took automatic changeover valve off put hose directly to regulator works fine.. have you had same problems ?
Thanks for your video!! It's been really useful! I'd like to know if you can share the Hose specifications, please! And where do you recommend to buy it. I'll buy it online. Thanks in advance!
we had gas it fitted and fitter told us to open both bottles together why ?? ...now im thinking why not just open one bottle use that one when he empty open the other one for a while then top up ?? Yes we have a gauge but me thinks not reliable..any feedback?? Harry..
Hi Harry. We've used one bottle at a time for the past 5 years, only opening both when we think one is about to run out. The auto changeover valve only switches across when one bottle is empty. I've heard before that both bottles need to be open but can't work out why and we've had no problems just having one open at a time. Cheers, Jay
The usual options are to have the refill point installed in the body of the van so the system can be refilled without opening the locker door, or have a fixed point inside the locker (a bracket of some kind) with the fill point attached. GasIT sell both kinds of system. Cheers, Jay
Hi Guys, i'v only started looking at your vlogs recently, keep up the good work. Question: . were you previously using Buthane or Propane and was there any issues with nozzles/ burners when converting to LPG. I know in a domestic case there are different cooker nozzles when converting from Butane to mains Gas? Pat
Hi Pat - the previous owners were using Calor so would have been pure butane/propane before we fitted this kit. Nope, we've not changed any of the gas equipment in the van and everything's worked fine - no issues. Cheers, Jay
I WOULD ALWAYS ADVICE GLOVES ARE WORN WHEN OPERATING THE GAS NOZZLE AND REMOVING THE ADAPTOR FROM EXTERNAL FILLER.. IN LOW TEMP THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE SEROUS BURNS TO SKIN SO PLEASE WEAR GLOVES ,, THANKS
There's plenty of space for one of those in the gas locker in our current van as the video shows. Our previous B544 (Dave) had a single fitted gas tank, so we never used bottles in it. Probably best to get the tape measure out to check. Cheers Julie
@@OurTourBlogVideos Hi guys, so how has this system been for you over the last 3yrs? Have you had many servo attendants that take their jobs way to seriously and because they haven't seen this system before then in their eyes, it can't be legal? Just interested to know or any stories you may of heard from other ppl on your travels, seen as you have a bit more descret way of doing it without opening van doors etc. BTW, it must be so much harder not pulling the bottles in and our everytime too. Id love to see about this set up here in Australia, those bottle refill places are a joke, especially over a few years. I may even just get a car gas bottle hooked up 😜
@@Colaaah the system's worked very well, and continues to work very well! Only a single attendant refused a fill, and he was trying to close up shop so he could go for lunch... That was in France, where there are so many motorhomes these kinds of system are very familiar to most service stations. We've spoken with lots of folks who have an in-locker filler and they report few to no issues with using them. Cheers, Jay
echoing a comment I made previously on one of your videos, I never thought I would watch a video about installing gas bottles but here I am!! I only found your channel through the epic driving in Palermo videos you did. Got any driving vids from Southern Europe on the cutting room floor?
Sorry James, it's been a few years and I can't remember fella. I just did some searching around on the internet at the time and they came up, but they might no longer exist. Good luck, cheers, Jay
Hi Trevor. The kit is available at www.gasit.co.uk/. We've used it for a total of 6 months European touring. Only small problems: the gauge on the big bottle sticks on empty after a refill for a couple of days and the systems has failed to switch over automatically in sub-zero temperatures. Apart from that, all good. No problems filling up across maybe 6 or 7 countries. So far, so good. Cheers, Jay
The "bottles" are cylinders! The "camping gaz" is butane. What you have is propane and despite where you get it, a 6kilo running hot water, heat and fridge will only last about a day. Any caravan site will have standard propane none will have yours, so you have to make the "find a station that sells lpg" journey. Rather you than me!
Nah, we've been using this system for 3 years now, on an off, and even in deep cold (Alpine winter ski resort conditions) the 17Kg system lasts at least a week, roughly a month in summer. 'Standard bottles' are great if you don't shift from country to country (or live for months at a time in the van - swapping standard bottles becomes expensive). If you tour the continent for months (which we do) then self-refillable is a sensible proposition. You can still use a 'normal' bottle with a high pressure hose adapter to the refill point, but we don't bother. Neither Morocco nor Finland have any official LPG refill stations, and we've eked out our gas across each of them, no problems. Cheers, Jay
Our fridge is a three way one, so has three different power source options. We can use 240v electric when we are hooked up (on a campsite etc), 12v electric which only works when the engine is running and gas for when we are parked up but have no electric. Hope that helps. Cheers Julie
Hello Julie, thank you...i know it probably seemed a silly question but i only bought my Hymer B544 Classic last week and its having work done so not really upto the mark with it all yet. Saw you travelled to Greece in yours, thats my plan in November although concerned about the route because of the weather conditions...any advise. Its only a one way trip for 6mths.
I'm using the fridge on gas all the time. While parking, and while driving. When hooked up ofcourse I use 230v then. When using gas while driving you need to keep in mind that when a big truck passes you the wind might blow off your flame. Always have a gas alarms.
As an LPG qualified engineer, I am a little confused that you are using two bottles of differing size. As far as I'm aware, if two bottles are used on a system with an auto change over valve, the bottles MUST be the same size.
As a non-qualified engineer in anything, I welcome any advice I can get. The system's been installed as per this video and actively used for 9 months and has, so far, functioned as expected. I close off both outlet valves on the bottles when I'm driving and I only open the valve on the bottle I'm using when I stop. Once the gauge indicates that bottle's almost empty, I open both bottles. The auto-changeover valve stays on the 'primary' bottle until it runs out of gas some time later, then switches over. What's supposed to happen if you have two different-sized bottles Kev? Cheers, Jay
+OurTour Blog Hi Jay, what is supposed to happen, is happening... One gas bottle empties, the valve auto changes over and carries on. What I'm told happens if you have two bottles of differing sizes is that the smaller of the bottles when the gas level drops, the pressures differ in the two bottles and the valve changes too soon. (It's a long time since I covered this in college, but it sticks in my head that it was to be recorded as I safety is sure if there were two bottles not the same). I'm going to have to get my books out now and find the definitive answer and let you know. I probably do 3 LPG jobs a year, and most are on systems with a massive tank in the garden.

Good video. So before filling up you shut down the tap on both bottles?

Bottles should be fixed in place with a bolted metal strap and bolted brackets on the bottom, not just with fabric straps.
why does the connector get cold? does the gas act like a Refrigerant?
