- Stacey will be travelling to the remote Hebridean island of Gometra to spend an off-grid weekend with Roc Sandford and his two daughters Blue and Savannah. She learns how Roc raised his daughters to become eco-warriors as well as understanding how deeply he and his children are involved in the controversial Extinction Rebellion and HS2 campaigns.
Stacey Dooley continues to sleep over at unique households across the UK by spending 72 hours in their home. From sleeping in the spare room to sharing family meals and going on outings, she will get involved in every aspect of their lives in a bid to understand them and the community they represent!

I started watching this series on accident and i love it. i love that stacey is so gentle and respectful and builds contact with people easily but is not afraid to ask very pointed questions.

When Stacey said "arguably its easier...to devote your time to a cause when you are a white middle class kid." So true I thought the exact same as that girl was explaining how she would rather do what shes doing that worrying about getting a job in the future. Thats easy to say when you come from generational wealth like her dad said he inherited 2 farms from his grandfather. These kids have a good life and really dont know what its like to build your own wealth and connections. What a huge divided world we live in.

Either Roc and his family seek to atone for the sins of their forebears -as it relates to the environmental devastation caused by 19th and 20th century steel production; slave holding; and/or general socio-economic meddling and profiteering, or they wish to hide in plain-sight via the open espousal of contemporary (yet ever perennial) 'end-of-the-world' activist-tropes. Long have the world's wealthiest hidden behind foundations, charities, and good-publicity, with the social charm to match. Best to watch actions over words and feeble displays, and read the trail for what it truly presents - they've bought their islands, as most of the world's elite are doing at present, and are going where most cannot follow - all in the while feigning to be the peoples' advocate.

Wow...Oh, that is very interesting information. The report gives the impression that they live there all the time and have to forego many things in order to survive. In addition, everything seems very chaotic or extremely makeshift. All right, the trillionaire needs a luxury break and then he believes in the climate propaganda instead of really finding out about the background and the true intention behind it. As is so often the case, a rich man's influence goes unused for really important things; instead, a life in a self-made bubble is preferred. This also explains why the two daughters don't have to worry about their future. It is more than a shame to present such an illusion to the audience. So one consequence remains: don't believe anything that you haven't experienced or seen yourself, and if you read the comments you will be surprised at how many find a medieval life worth living while sitting comfortably on their sofas. I'm definitely not a person who advocates mindless consumption, but the solution is not to take a step back, but to finally put things back in order. There are enough very good inventions that are good for our earth, but which are suppressed, then think about why...

My grandmother, born in 1882, sifted flour the same way. Even in the big beautiful house my grandfather built, she baked and cooked the same as she had always done. Her meals were delicious. The land is wonderful and I understand the appeal of getting away from greedy land developers, traffic, high cost of electricity, heating etc. Loved the video.

To be fair high speed trains don't really do much to reduce commuter traffic and car-related carbon emission as they are only good as an alternative to air travel between major cities (you either reach high speeds OR stop at every station, can't have both unfortunately). A realistic car alternative would be more like a short-distances/ frequent rides commuter train network. And since both cars and airplanes are huge in terms of emission we desperately need both. Protesting any such scheme in the name of the planet is quite onestly like shooting oneself in the foot.
overall adding more transportation wont have people using their cars less just more people traveling .. over all. in Canada the weather is showing climate change.

Nature shows us that there is survival in numbers. Humans are able to adapt to new environments. If a women who survived the First World War decided not to have children because she was afraid of a terrible future (Second World War) who would be walking that Scottish Island now?

Absolutely delightful show. I am homesick for the countryside of the UK. And such an important message: Without the planet, nothing else matters. The bond the sisters have and with their father is truly beautiful. Their passion and willingness to do whatever it takes to save the planet.
The population of England is going through the roof. Vast amounts of greenspace are being laid waste to in order to build housing, hospitals and roads etc. The indigenous Britons need to wake up and quickly.
I feel so bad for these young women. Living off the grid - cool, no problem. Being concerned with the environment and protesting - cool no problem. Having this concern over the environment be so all consuming that they are obviously traumatized is so sad. There is no balance. They live every second of the day with the weight of the world on their shoulders. They live in such a beautiful place and I don't see joy, only constant pain and worry.

His wealth comes from inheritance and property, His comment that people should be able to live in the UK without money is laughable, he himself got money from a bank to buy the island, I wonder if he has any rent paying tenants in his property empire?
Stacey, I just found you and I think what you’re getting to experience is amazing. I am in southern VA in US and am a grandmother of two. You and I are kindred spirits. I totally agree with most of your thoughts. I watch TH-cam for just this reason. I am able to see how others live their lives. I’ve never been out of the U.S. and my town is small. I feel I learn so much about the rest of the world through these videos. So thank you for all you’re doing. You lucky girl. You’re very direct and yet very compassionate and respectful of others’ choices. I also watched Only Human when you visited India. You’ve very adventurous. Well done!

They went to private schools in London, they come from wealth and they are disrupting lives of hard working people by their protests in the city. I love 💕 Stacey too. I just found her on my feed today. I was born and raised in Luton where she came from. Finding her a very attractive fresh of fresh air. She is so beautiful and accepting of all the Families she has documented. She is so adaptable and is truly inspiring and intelligent about spending precious moments with others

Stacey is merely the host of this show - she’s not the producer. Producers are the ones who come up with ideas for a show, get it approved by the network, set up funding, arrange all the logistics (or monitor those who do), write many of the questions for the host to put forth, etc.
Do you think Stacey paid these people for these appearances out of her own pocket as well? 😒

I know this is old now but it's true to say that no one cares if you don't go to college for a cause. The best thing would be to go to college and University, become a politician or lawyer, and try to help change the system. They clearly feel very strongly about their beliefs.

I agree with you, Gemma, and I did just that. No, my experiences, thoughts and beliefs weren't corrupted by the system at all. They may have shifted a bit with some discarded for good reason after being thought through. And I ended up with a deeper understanding that I was then able to discuss and challenge students with as one of their educators.
Becoming a politician, and or lawyer is not the way to change the system…
I don't know - I really struggled with this one. First, the father is a millionaire and owns his own island. The children are charmed and aren't required to do much - including work or go to school. The get to disconnect and be in nature whenever they like. Second, this type of activism seems attention-seeking and lazy simultaneously. In order for the majority of the country to survive, people have to work - meaning, use public transit to get to where they need to go. How is living in a tree helping the everyday / common human? Can't the daughters and their cohorts think of a better use of their excessive time and money to help improve the environment? Seems like there are other causes that would make more of a difference (campaigning to those politicians and the uber wealthy who continue to make the horrible environmental decisions impacting the climate)? While I do think more should be done FOR the environment, these girls seem entitled and lazy in their approach.

My gosh this family is wonderful! I wish I could visit. They have such positive attitudes. I love to garden and would so enjoy learning from them how to live in tune with nature. If any of you guys see this let me know if you would like a helping hand for a month or so!

I’m sorry for the girls that they feel children have no place in the world to come. They seem terrified and said they had a scary childhood. The dad promoted his beliefs onto them which is good and bad, for now they live in a world of fear, isolated and narrowly focused on the world as ending if they don’t champion change. I would love to see them travel and visit people who are also changing the narrative about how our planet is evolving and see how science and technology can be used to make positive change.
For me, the worst thing in their situation is that their father influenced them so much and they said he didn’t. They truly believe that these are their beliefs which they gained on their own
Homesteading has a certain romance associated with it. My husband and I homesteaded -everything organic (with egg chickens, hunting dogs, barn cats) growing our own food and having home based businesses for over 20 years and while it was a beautiful outdoor life ion many ways and had many great memories but the bottom line truth also was it was hard physical labor 24/7. It worked well in our 40's and 50's but when we got into our 70's the daily hard work became impossible to maintain and we had to sell out. If the couple has a healthy younger generation to help them and to take over that is one thing but when you either have no children or your children have no interest, then it becomes impossible to maintain. Regarding the 18-year-old who is on strike for school....I doubt that the school is even aware or really cares about one student who is penalizing themselves that way. Something is just off and twisted about this act. I feel that homesteading for 20 years, organically (and buying only local food and goods) recycling 100%, not buying "things" (therefore not putting anything into the waste cycle, composting, lessening our vehicle gas use and so on has more of an impact on global warming than one student boycotting school. As an aside, we were only one of a few who was seriously trying to help climate control. many friends grew their own food and bought locally but were still caught up in "tear out the old kitchen and buy new" buying cycle. I felt like we were doing quite a bit of sacrificing but so few others were.
So much wisdom in everything you've said. If everyone did THEIR part, then the activists would not feel compelled to give up their lives for this cause.
I did a bit of this while experimenting with alternative lifestyles in my youth too, Donnall ...not at your extended level, though. But, yes, it's damn hard work, which I admittedly, like Stacey, did appreciate but not want to make a lifestyle out of for myself. I understand about passion for a cause, but why does it have to entail no heat or hot water? A wood burning stove would provide all of that. They're very sweet people, but their way of life seems highly esoteric, impractical and unsustainable. The scenery was breathtaking, and I'm sure the fresh air is wonderful, but without him inheriting money this wouldn't even be viable.

I know people from Roc's generation who didn't have kids because they were worried about the demographic crisis, which was the big thing in the seventies. They regret their decision now. These crises seem to subside and are replaced by new ones. I hope that Blue and Savannah change their minds. Just as their dad had kids despite the state of the world, and they have had a good life to date, they should continue the family line.
I don't like the pressure put on young people to save the planet or the environment. First of all, there's a underlying arrogance there. You don't have that kind of control. And one of the most freeing things in life is to realize you aren't in control. Do what you can, but enjoy life. It is a gift that won't be given a second time. So I wish these young ladies would be able to enjoy themselves, go get married, go have children, watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Take a long luxurious bath. Smell the roses! There is a lot left in this world that is beautiful, despite all of the horrors. And to constantly think on what's wrong, is detrimental to the mind and the soul. God is not intended us to be miserable in the life that he's given. I think living off grid is a great idea. I think making things by hand and conserving things is beautiful. Taking care of what you have and preserving things that you have is important. But joy doesn't have to be lost while you do it.

I uderstand being vocal about what you know to be harmful. However, if you have young children your main daily focus is taking care of your children. As for thinking telling them the activitity you are going to take part in could cause you to be arrested and put in jail, doesn't stop them being traumatised.

Its easy when you can just buy and island with money you never had to earn and just live off inheritance while speaking down to working people about how they should live. I live off grid and am 100% for that life, but these people don't live in the real world. I wonder how many trains/busses etc after the fuel guzzling boat they take to get to these idiotic protests. Or all the years going back and forth between London private school and daddies island. But they want to prevent good hard working people from getting to work and affording the roof over their heads while they sit comfortable riding the coattails of their family wealth. God help us

I like that they've chosen this lifestyle instead of having it forced on them by their parents. I do think there are important resources they're missing out on, though, like therapy and having friends to hang out with.
Truly loved this segment.. We do small things in our home to try and help, like the plastics that holds like a 6pack of sodas, we never just chunk those we always rip them up. My oldest daughter went to a circus at 2 and she thought it was so mean riding and hurting the elephants back, and she just knew the keepers were making contact with the wips to make the animals mind we havent been back to one since nor has my grandsons. We arw far from perfect in recycling ect but we do try to give back positively to earth

These people are mad. They live their lives in defiance of society instead of creating solutions. You _can_ live off-grid without having to make a campsite out of your own home, the technology exists, but these guys think it's commendable to live in 1910 in the 21st century. The dad teaches his kids to throw away their futures to a cause without compromise and I think that's disgusting. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problem with being passionate about climate change or living in a remote place, but their way of activism evolves around ruining people's days out of anger without bringing any real solution aside from "don't do anything."
There are so many things you can do with this mission to contribute to a better future. You can start a company that makes small wind turbines for domestic use, you can get into nature conservation work, you can get into academics and do research to bring to politicians, you can get into politics, you can do so much. Instead, they just want to scream, be difficult, get arrested, not work or study, and thus not make enough money to install the necessary equipment to live a normal life off-grid.
All his four children went to private schools in London, and the home they have in London is worth MILLIONS. Do not worry, they enjoy this camping life style when they are up there in Scotland, In London they live in a very exclusive area,

@katella That is so awesome!! I'm getting a raised garden bed and starting a vegetable garden this spring myself. I can do that from a wheelchair so that's a plus!! It would be great if everyone, regardless of age or a disability could live off the grid. Unfortunately, it's not possible for everyone. 😢

Why are no repairs going on around the place, ie. Windows, doors, fireplace etc.. im writing from experience as i knew a family who had a small homestead and stopped gmo (mon santo) from been secretly grown in the farms around our town.
That is a helpful cause they chose. I am grateful to them, and people like them.

I understand the concerns as well and was actually a youth during America's Zero Population Growth movement but got pregnant via a diaphram slippage, the second time with broken condom when recuperating from an IUD infection. Maybe this is TMI to some, but these are examples of circumstances that often challenge personal beliefs. As for me, I'm so very happy that I've had my boys, who've grown up to be lovely men with one grandchild. No more. And I think, like Mrs Monicautt has commented, that there is a balance in all things.
With all this said, having lived in the Netherlands over two decades now, I find that whenever I return to visit the States I'm admittedly unnerved by the infrastructure that doesn't at all cater to cyclists and public transport but to highway expansion that accomodates stripmalls and gas guzzing vehicles.
To me American consumerism, especially, has expanded on an alarmingly massive scale. Ignorning the problem will NOT make it go away.
I do laud Roc Sandford in his efforts and initiatives. Yet, I too can't help feeling a sadness for the weight that these lovely young girls of his are carrying on their shoulders.

I taught at uni in Beijing, yes, and am well aware of their struggles. I have yet to have the pleasure of visiting India, though. I'm afraid the crowds and conditions would too easily overwhelm me.

First of all, the video title is incorrect. This was not about off-grid living.
Second, whyyyyyy are these young ladies bearing the weight of the world on their shoulders? I envy them about ZERO percent. Their dad owns a gorgeous island, and is a millionaire from what I've gathered in the comments and THIS is their life!? No, just no. What a waste. There are better, smarter ways to take a stance, make a point.
Third, why does Stacey never prepare properly? I can only guess it's a calculated move to look as out of her element as possible BUT it's painful to watch her wearing the wrong shoes and definitely that dumb jacket everywhere she goes!!! COME ON ALREADY!!!

I was thinking the same. It is probably to show what a city girl Stacey is. She is not stupid, she must know what clothes to wear. After watching Ben Fogles programme with people who truly live off-grid, this was a waste of time. Annoying Stacey doesn't do her job as a journalist. She is too soft.
This is what happens when the world depict a person like Greta Thunberg like a modern day saint. Young women wasting their lives aspiring to be like her. Think of all the girls in other parts of the world who are denied education. The daughter dreads the future, playing Peter Pan living in Neverland refusing to grow up. The fear in her face when Stacey asked about the future was real. I wonder if it is her own future or the planet's.
Skipping school? You have to be really privileged or delusional to think someone cares. Greta Thunberg was actually skipping school because she is autistic. Fortunately she lives in Stockholm, not in some rural area where nobody cares. And her mother is a famous singer who tipped off the media.

I have so many questions about this family, I feel a little sad for the girls because they seem terrified of the world just kind of in general...But if you research the island itself it says, under the father's name at least, that he spends the majority of his time in London.. It would be curious to see a part 2 with where he stays if he's there for his activism.
Their great grandfather was 5th Earl of Rosslyn. All went to private schools, His London house is worth millions of pounds, NONE of them work. They all just stop traffic

I grew up on an island every summer and am now back. It called and called me me back. Like a wave. I am now back.
I went back to visit my island. My parents wanted their ashes to be spread there. The prices, just to get there, were astronomical. Ferry ride. If we had bought a house in the 60's we could sell it for 3/4 of a million dollars today. It was still beautiful but too commercialized for my liking.
When I was a teen, we were fear mongered that the world would freeze over, now it’s that it’s too hot. Live to your own principles, but keep your protests off the freeway, please.

Roc only lives on Gometra for 3 months out of the year. And his daughters apparently only visit occasionally. The docu made it seem like it was their full time home. Its just their Summer holiday house.
And Roc is a millionaire, if not a billionaire. An interesting omission when that kind of money could help his cause more than his daughters living in tree houses.

The girls actually grew up in London, where the father lives in a million pound home in London 9 months out of the year. Blue lives in London with her mum. All 4 children went to very expensive posh London private schools.

I see a lot of good in the way they live. So much beauty and simpliy surrounding their lifestyles there on the island. I believe in fighting for what you believe also, however I do feel that being consumed with what you are fighting for is not healthy. Yes they are enjoying the island and each other but it appears that all their energy is mostly devoted to their passion for what they believe is right. You have to have a healthy balance in life. Stop and smell the roses.
Feel sorry the girls did not have carefree childhood. While being responsible for daily caring of the world. Without the frightening part. I think my grandkids are more fearful than their parents ( media info etc) 💐

It starts well, but then you realize that they have major ecoanxiety and they have a lot of pressure on their shoulders to “save the world” (being quite intense activists, crying because they won’t have children because of the state of the world, etc). Their dad seems to have balanced out well and ecologically friendly lifestyle and activism with a good mental health and family. As they say themselves, he’s a cautious optimist. His daughters, on the other hand, are scared and anxious…

One thing is to be self sufficient and another thing is to live in fear. I feel sad that the girls don't get a chance to question their father's beliefs It is very unfair for them to live in doom and gloom of the earth. When the reality is that they just need to live with goals and doing their best with the talent they have in an imperfect world. Protesting like that does not change things because it is the governments calling the shots and they don't care about their silly protests.
We’ve raised 7 kids. My twins are boy /girl. She has 3 kids. However, our son is very firm in his decision to not have kids because of the future.

I draw the line at scaring people into not having kids. Yes maybe don't have 10 kids that you will struggle to support but 2 is okay and many people in Western nations are not even having 1 kid anymore so we face problems of an aging population. Also we are in an age of endless possibility with new technology that will improve the climate situation.

This family reminds me of the hippies of the 60s without the drugs. I admire their passion on one hand, and resent them from pushing their agenda on others on the other hand. I am on the other end of the spectrum of climate change, I believe climate is cyclic and they can do nothing to control it. We all have a right to live how we feel best, so long as it doesn't interfere with how others choose to live.
I believe the same as you, and i honestly think its ignorant to think that a tiny handful of people are going to make any difference what so ever. Even if every single person in the UK and USA (for example) were to live off grid, like this family...it would essentially do absolutely nothing because almost the entirety of the worlds pollution etc comes from Asian and African countries! And if everyone decided to not have kids, not sure what that's doing other than making humans go extinct.
The girls are adults and carrying on with the values they were raised with. They’re not hurting anyone and while I don’t share their opinions let them live.

Imagine this island covered in dense tangled forest of downy birch, hazel, aspens, rowans and willows, brightened by splashes of colour from wild roses and the scent of twining honeysuckle, just as it used to be.
It’s really like camping because they’re in their own home and they’re always wearing coats and hats. They must be freezing because that big house can’t be heated by anything.
There was a small wood stove that I noticed, and a fireplace that looked like it was falling apart. It's probably so hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, especially upstairs in the bedrooms. But, before there was electricity, that's how everyone lived!!

When these young protesters do stupid protesting ie laying down in front of cars, blocking bridges, tying themselves to railing..... they are being so disruptive...People have to get to work, so that they can pay the bills and put food on the table, People trying to get to their treatments in hospitals while these young, well to do protesters are being disruptive and being thrown in jail...have no jobs (or don't need to work). Sickening!!! Maybe they should get an education and get into government so that they can make changes!
