    I don’t understand, why it isn’t part of an audiologist’s training to learn sign language. It would certainly help deaf people like this young lady and would make it easier for the audiologist too.

      I was born deaf
      and completely understand what it’s like. We have the same issue in Australia with most audiologists who don’t know sign language. While we do have some that can, it has always been my belief it should be part of their training, particularly since they work with deaf and HOH people.

    Taylor is such a beautiful girl! Is she able to hear better now and distinguish different sounds? This is such an amazing technology that can actually give one the ability to hear. I'm very happy she has had this opportunity as have so many like her. :)

    In 1980 I saw a demonstration of the first cochlear implant experiments from the University of Utah which had an artificial organs department under the direction of Dr. Pim Kolff (a professor from the Netherlands). They hooked up a profoundly deaf (since birth) man with a cochlear implant to six large main-frame computer cabinets and demonstrated his auditory understanding for a half hour. After it was over they said that the real challenge at that time was to miniaturize the electronics to make it practical for actual patients. All processing back then was using 64K RAM...lots of it...but nevertheless that was the state of the art. So what Taylor received in this video was the dream of those scientists over 40 years ago.

    Being deaf myself, i personally hate getting new hearing aids because you have to go through the frustration and wierd torture of retraining your brain to get accustomed to the new sounds and etc but once you get pass that ordeal your life improves dramatically.

      She was kind of bugging me towards the end there. She kept over emphasizing the struggle that the girl's brain will have with the new stimulus, as if the girl didn't understand. The lady should have been using that time to motivate the girl, and emphasize the fact that it can be done. Brains are amazingly adaptive. She never even mentioned that the person dropped in China would actually start to learn the language pretty quickly if they had to. I think she was thinking more about the camera and her analogies than the girl.

      As a cochlear implant wearer, I can say it is not immediate to be able ro hear at first switch, it does take a few mapping sessions before it starts to make any real sense. There is quite a difference between hearing aids and cochlear implants. For me it was after the 3rd mapping session that things started to sound normal. The other thing to is that is depends on how long the ear it’s self has been without any sound stimulation which can okay a big part in how much benefit someone will get from it.

      She doesn't speak English really because she has never heard the words. However, she knows ASL, American Sign Language, and is relying on that. Just because you can hear a language does not mean that you can necessarily understand it.

      +Walwalkn Wewnrkl She doesn't understand but at the same time she'll know a voice cuz its hearing something and it's something she's never "heard' b4. So from the looks of things, from this video. Doesn't seem like she can hear voices. All the other videos i saw they were able to hear voices n didn't need signing.. Idk i think this is an amazing thing helping ppl. And there's surgery to help blind ppl see too.Awesome!

    • @36paris
      @36paris 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course she can hear the voices. But she doesn’t know what the words mean. The doctor explained all that. It’s like dropping an English speaking person in the middle of China. They can hear people speaking but they can’t understand what they are saying. Plus, a lot of deaf people don’t speak because they can’t hear the sounds they are making. She will need to learn how to speak and understand spoken words.

    • @TemenosL
      @TemenosL 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah that's not how it works. It's not just that you don't know the language yet. It's that your brain has not learned to process sound. Music would not sound good at all for the uninitiated.

      You don't seem to understand how it works. You don't magically start hearing stuff. Your brain literally doesn't know how to process any sound properly at first.
