My Hoya obovata was always blasting leaves and was the slowest of all my growers, when I stopped letting it get bone dry between waterings and started watering it a little more frequently, the growth has picked up. Maybe try that with your variegated compactas! Just water them a day or two before you would regularly water them and see if they start picking up for you. OH! This happened with my regular Carnosa and my Krimson Queen too… more regular watering with less bone dry time did wonders for their growth. Hoyas definitely don’t like to be overwatered but I don’t think all of them need to be as “bone dry” as ppl make us think.
I sadly got some yellow mushy leaves on my Carnosa Krimson Queen. I didn’t think I was overwatering it either so it was really perplexing. I changed the substrate and repotted so I really hope it bounces back!!

My caudata sumatra bloomed for me for the first time and I almost cried, I showed anyone who would look pictures of the blooms. I was honestly the proudest Hoya mom.
Any tips? I really want mine to grow, but it's just struggling so much. I think it's easily one of the most beautiful plants there is.

I very recently got into Hoya and I only have three in my collection: Hoya black margin, Hoya obovata, and Hoya macrophylla! All very different from each other which I like and recommend so you can figure out which you like best! Good luck!

I heard that hoyas will reach to grab onto something before they put out a leave. If you tie the tendril/vine on a trellis it should begin to give you leaves. I did that with my Kerii and Ovabata and immediately began to give leaves. Steak all your vining hoyas early. I even use chop stick just to train then early. Then do an update. 😊
Darlin, first, great work 😊 one thing I've noticed is that if you repot a Hoya, or if it's pot is too large, it will take longer to flower. They mostly like to be settled in a pot for about a year as a general rule... ❤️ Also Hoyas mostly LOVE water! There are certain ones that don't so much, but as a general rule, hoyas love being watered. Hope this is helpful... 😊❤️

Hoya polyneura won my heart over onto the Hoya train! I genuinely thought I didn't like them but I appreciated the pretty mermaid tail look of the polyneura and so I got one... Those new leaves! So tiny and they get so large and then darken and harden off.. So pretty. And one vine turned into 3 growth points, and I was sold.
My favourite Hoya I have now is my brand new Hoya Australis Lisa. I love that thing so much! It's just a tiny two leaf cutting but I'm in love.

I've found that growing variegated hoya shows much more advantageous growth when grown in semi hydro. I have a variegated hoya wayetii that's done nothing in soil and I put part of the plant in Leca as an experiment and i swear I get a new leaf every week while the mother plant does nothing

Your Hoya collection is lovely. I have a sunrise that wrapped itself around a fan cord in my grow tent, it has been blooming nonstop now. I am having a heck of a time with the Villosa, grows a new leaf and dies off, such a drama queen.

I had the same problem with my Hoya finlaysonii chicken farm. It grew a long vine with no leaves. The same week that I trellised the vine, it gave me THREE new leaves. They’re currently all hardening right now at the same time. I have it in 80% humidity and directly under the grow light. The baby leaf that is right under the light is growing the fastest! Hope this helps
Hoyas will grow leaves if they feel supported but not otherwise.
I only have 9 types of Hoya but my favs are all of them, lol. Particularly my Publicalyx for its ease and fast growth. Loving my newly acquired Mathilde and Kentiana, as well! Great video! Hope Olive is doing well!

The Hoya bella names are actually ‘Lida Buis’ (inner variegated) and ‘Anneke Buis’ (outer variegated) ✨ They’re so cute!!

I love wayettii! Yours looks super healthy! Sometimes leaving it alone is best. My wayettii is variegated with a little sunstress. One of my favorites!
Ohh I love the variegated ones - gorgeous! And so true, mine seems to do well with very minimal care :)
If you want that beautiful queen to bloom (and all hoyas I suppose) fertilize more often! I use schultz orchid fertilizer every third watering or so in the winter and every watering in the spring/summer and she blooms like mad! When I first got her she was in a 6 inch hanging pot with no peduncles and she didn't do much even in high light but once I started fertilizing more often the peduncles kept coming!
Also I'm in the okanagan and an absolute hoya-head and would love to get into trading more if you ever want to trade! Your video inspired me to count and I have 33 of them (which also surprised me lol). I'll be in the victoria area in march or I'm happy to ship some cuttings to ya

Hey Fern. I have heard that if you point those tendrils up, they will do amazing things. Like trellis or pole them.
My favorite is my crimson princess I have it in hanging basket a lot like your crimson queen and it is so white and beautiful and I have it under a grow light and it is getting some pink sun stressing I love it!

You have a beautiful hoya collection! The favorite hoya that I own are probably my hoya obovata and hoya chelsea. I also think the hoya mathilde is really pretty but mine has been dormant since I got it, which is a year ago :(. I love all your videos and am also patiently waiting for spring to arrive 🌷
Hi Fern, loving your Beautiful Hoya collection!! I have 8 right now and4 on order to ship in April. My slowest grower is my Kerri Varigata, not one bit of growth since I brought her in March of last year. At least she's still alive! 😁
I have one w/ 4 “hearts” on it and didn’t show any signs of growth until this spring. I think it happened because I tied it to a bamboo stick which I think they like. Give it a go and see what happens..
Regarding your Krimson queen blooming, I'd recommend watering more often than every 6 weeks. Hoya need more water than most people think for optimum thriving.
I recommend listening to the owner of Vermont hoya for tips on watering and humidity.

Fave day so far💞💞💞💞💞💞💜✨✨ was waiting for this video as soon as the Monstera collection came out hehe - my linearis was also growing funky with some bare stems on the mix and after I chopped and propped, it looks freaking amazing. It roots sooo easily so I say go for it !✨
Grin I realize this vid. Is a yr. Old, never the less, I was told to put my undulata in a sunny window, low and behold she’s starting to bring me growth points. Try it ver’s, the tent, if no window use high grow light. 💕
Put your variegated compactas in the bathroom - mine perked right up once it got some gentle light/humidity!

I've made up pots of hoya serpens with butterfly cuttings which fill out so nicely, or you could try to wrap the vines in the pot and it will shoot off new vines like crazy
I’ve heard it was just Compacta too. No Carnosa in the title. Love your Hoya 😍
It maybe that those hoyas that are struggling have flat mites. There are different treatments you can try and see if the growth improves.
💗💗💗hi Fern!!!💗💗💗i won a small variegated H Compacta in a giveaway (😍) and was actively killing it for probably 4-5months before I took action to save it from my torture!!! i (inspired by you) transitioned it into perlite and put it in a ziploc bag and it is THRIVING!!!!!! i have like 5 new leaves coming in!!! wish i could send you pictures!!! yours probably getting high humidity in the cabinet but maybe She wants her own private sauna room?! i am also a perpetual underwaterer sooo the struggle was real with this plant for me until the bag life!!!

My krimson Queen is a bit bigger then yours and was also around $70. Originally she came from Vandermeers greenhouse in Toronto but I bought her off someone more local to me.
After waiting over a year for her to bloom I moved her right up next to my west facing window and within just a couple of months there she's bloomed once. I looked at her just the other day and she now had two penduncles. So my advice would be to move her closer to your window or bring a grow light closer to your bed frame to get her to bloom.
oh that's amazing 💚 yes I definitely suspect more light would make her bloom! nowhere to put her near a window or light though :( hopefully one day!
Weird video request! Just wanted to ask if you can make a video about cleaning up after plant chores, specially indoors with some tips and tricks to minimize indoor clean up after plant chores… like soil in the bathtub, clogging the sink from watering / washing plants! 😂😅 it will greatly help! 🤷🏻♀️🙏🏻🤞 thanks!
The variegated compacta seem to be much happier in ceramic pots. That is the only thing that has helped mine!
Dang, I need more hoyas, they’re all so cute!! 🥰 I’m glad I’m not the only one struggling with my variegated compacta, lol. I’ve tried everything: more light, less light, more water, less water…bb, what do you want?! At this point it’s looking really sad and I’m thinking about just pulling it out and putting it in water for a few weeks to kind of start over…I’ve managed to save a few other plants that way. 😅
Glad to know I wasn't doing anything wrong other than touching new leaves - I've knocked off three leaves from my publicalyx and was wondering what I was doing wrong to cause that. Good to know it was from me touching them 😅😂
You might want to try your variegated plants in pon. They are more thirsty plants

I only have a Hoya compacta that I got off FB this summer. Other than that, I am not super attracted to Hoya…EXCEPT…I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Hoya serpens!
Honestly if I could just have one type of plant, I would just keep my Hoyas. They are so easy to care for bcuz they really speak to you. I appreciate not having to worry about my Hoya unlike a lot of my other plants. Loved your Hoya Serpens and you krimson queen. My krimson Queen is my only trouble some Hoya, it has only grown a little bit and died back on one section. I brought it home with me from Florida a year ago. I probably should repot it and see if anything is going on (it came from a good nursery so, I didn’t repot it.)
This video came at such a great time! I just went and adopted my first Hoya today, it’s a krimson queen, I’m exited hopefully it goes well and it blooms for me eventually, one day lol. Maybe I will have a lovely collection like yours soon 🪴😌

I highly recommend propagating Hoya in moss! I’ve had nearly 100% success so far!

I’ve converted all but one of my Hoya to pon-I did this specifically for ease of care I’ve found they like to have the humidity for the roots

Oh please leave the Matilde on the 🐍 trellis! Maybe cut the long vines to prop so you can fill the pot and/or make a small hanging 🪴 as well?

Hoya compacta is def my fav Hoya in my collection ! Although I don’t have many types haha. I have the veregated version also and it’s SUPER slow growing.
Wow, your Hoya Compacta's are fantastic. Mine was attacked by Thrips. She is well into recovery now. I love Hoya's.
Majority of the Hoya that were struggling were in terracotta. Terracotta isn't a bad thing, but to me it looked like you either need to keep them in the same mix and switch to plastic/glazed, or give them a finer, more water retentive media.

My favourite hoya of yours is definitely your hoya compacta!! So beautiful and lush I want it 😩🥺 and out of my hoyas I think I like my curtisii very much because it is so fast growing! 💚
It's called a Hoya carnosa cultivar 'Compacta'. The species is carnosa and when the differences in a plant are man-made or artificially selected for then it's a cultivar and it gets a name. If it is naturally of the same species with distinct features then it is labelled a subspecies and sometimes given a name.

My Mathilde has been doing nothing for months now, and before that she just shot out tons of vines with leaves that never develop. Maybe I will take your advice on cutting Hoyas and just cut the vines, propagate them and see if that will get it to grow now that the growing season is just around the corner.
My krimson princess is easily one of my favourite plants. I bought it by accident thinking it was the queen. I have both now and the princess is something else...

As a True Hoya head this video made me so happy!!! I have 53 species of Hoya at the moment. I have been told that compacta need more water that other Hoya and Am wondering if that is why your variegated ones are giving you trouble. I killed 3 before a seller in Florida told me to give them more water. I have a small one now and she gets water weekly and is happy. I have a full basket on the way from her and am so excited. Love your collection. Do you not like Pubicalyx varieties? I could send you one to try! Pm me your address if you want one. I made a ton of cuttings and now they are everywhere. I have pink silver splash and red buttons.
What a lovely collection of Hoya. I have the Bella 'Luis Bois' and have found it only grows under my grow light and the pink stressing is just coming through which is gorgeous. After 3 months under the growlight it has given me 9 new leaves in that time. The Hoya I am struggling with is my Heuschkelliana Variegata which just looks like it wants to give up and this has only happened since getting a humidifier so would like to know if that is the problem if anyone knows. I have had to place it under a cloche so time will tell. I love the Obavata varieties too but will only get them if the right plant at the right price comes along. I think it's great that more people are getting into this fantastic genus. Good luck with all your Hoyas, Fern.
You have an awesome variety of Hoyas. I only have a few hoyas, pubicalyx splash, krimson princess, and a curisii, that just doesn't seem to grow at all. I am looking forward to adding a few more to my collection.
