I love it even more that it was outright stated that he might get clobbered to death by a middle shool kid he scammed if he isn't careful at least two different times. It's just such an unsupernatural ending that just seems to fit perfectly.

The reverse curse coming back to bite Kaiki in the ass all the way from the end of Sengoku's first arc might be my favorite callback in all of the Monogatari series. Like, that scene where Araragi was despairing because he wasn't able to stop the curse from rebounding was already pretty interesting without this insanely late callback since it is one of the rare time where Araragi completely failed to save someone and also accepted that he had to choose his close friend over this stranger that he doesn't know but the scene gains even more gravitas after you see how it effects Kaiki at the end of this arc all this time later. Just a brilliant piece of writing, an absolute masterpiece I swear.
This is probably the biggest thing the anime release order screwed up. Without Hanamonogatari as a precursor, no one catches the inconsistency of Kaiki's apparent death with the timeline and connects it back to his speech at the beginning of the volume. For that matter, his motivation for accepting Senjougahara's request is seemingly random as well without the context of his relationship with Tooe.
Doesn't Hanamonogatari go after this anyway? Araragi had already graduated there. Yes, the motivation seems random, but isn't something that really ruins the plot, also, knowing that Kaiki is still alive after the end of 2nd season makes the finale less impactful. I've likely rewatched the full series more than 10 times but I still haven't done it in cronological order so I may be wrong. In any case, I prefer it this way because as I said, it makes everything including Kaiki's death more impactful.

I guess there's an argument to be made about how powerful the death scene is depending on watch order (I still disagree, I think connecting it back to Kaiki's claim of unreliable narration is an extremely rewarding realization), but that aside, I can only imagine watching Koimonogatari first makes his later reappearance feel like a cheap asspull. Didn't it bother you when he showed back up? I'd personally think it bad writing if that'd been the original order of story arcs. Also big, big disagree on the Tooe bit, all these reactors looked confused out of their minds when he suddenly started rambling about Kanbaru.

On the Tooe bit, since he refers about her as Gaen, you probably could make a connection with Izuko, also if that connection is that important, Nisio could have stablish in Koi, it was really necesary to do it in Hana. Anyway, that didn't bother me, because first, since the beggining, if you watch Monogatari in release order, you know that there is a lot of stuff that you don't know, and you are waiting for it to be cleared on the future. And second, I don't think that hard about that stuff, I used to do that but it makes it less enjoyable for me because you tend to know what will happend in a lot of cases, after I already watched it I start to give attention to those kind of details, so on the first watch didn't really bothered me at all. On the first watch I tend to give more importance to the feels the show can convey, and after that I start to check the details. Anyone has different ways of enjoying things after all.

The part where he accepts for kanbaru only gave strong curiosity for his relations with toe and the lie he told at the end of koi (his death) is more of a bonus for people to realize after hana, so the impact of his "death" is still there.

Having the viewing order in this way sort of does this between arcs - regardless for whether or not you’re aware of Kaikis initial motivation related to Kanberu (though you could easily make the argument that he wants to do this for Senjougahara as well - he literally tries to do his best to talk himself into doing it). You can also guess that he has something to do with Kanberu because that’s where Araragi first meets Kaiki but it’s a mystery as to what it is until Hana. Just because you don’t know the reason for the intent or why it’s relevant doesn’t mean that it’s not something that’s interesting and can be used narratively to draw the reader in and allow them to ask questions. People were confused as hell when Ougi is first introduced as well - randomly shows up in the story talking to Araragi on the stairs with next to no real introduction, that doesn’t take away from the relevance of the scene The big reason for why Hana should go earlier is because it’s thematically relevant to the story and the ark is a little lackluster if boy it comes after especially considering how amazing this arc is. Even with that in mind, though I do appreciate having watched when it was airing and getting Hana after second season. The reason that Kaiki‘s death was so impactful was because he is a character that is literally expendable in the eyes of the audience… He plays no further role as far as we are aware in the story, and he has no reason to really continue to exist in the story either. That makes his death seem believable and it’s further engrosses the audience into believing Ougi is some kind of traditional antagonist… The audience can wait until episode two (literally two episodes after this arc) to realize that kaiki is a liar, and the events that happened at the very end may not have been legitimate. If you see Hana first, it takes away any impact or suspense, that his death or the scene with Nadeko has because you know he will be fine.
Well this is just a theory but he often lies in His monologue too so it might have been possible that he knew it wont work And just didn't tell senjou anything much And we all know jow his monologue here suggests that he died but in fact he survives and is seen alive and well in hanamonogatari

There's a dialogue in Koyomimonogatari where Kaiki's tells Araragi that for a con to work, there has to be 'darkness' before, maybe it's an indirect way to say to Ougi helped to cause it? That said, I'm not even sure if Ougi existed back then, so If someones knows I would appreciate to be corrected.
