Short, but sweet! For any other channel, this would have been left as a minor skirmish barely worth mentioning, but you made this little battle come alive. For the 300ish Romans who were stranded, this was perhaps one of the most important battles of their lives, and that not a single one died is a testament to their skills and valour. Thank you for sharing it with us, and I hope you'll be able to continue making videos for a long time!
Interesting case study of how morale works. The legionaries were surrounded with nowhere to flee, so they held the line. Knowing that they would get slaughtered to the last man if the enemy breaks through. The Gauls, on the other hand, were so many that any individual soldier would be hesitant to risk life and limb by engaging the Romans. There are so many others there to get it done, after all.
Such an interesting analysis and i really think you are spot on, you can imagine how a multitude of what was basically peasants from near by villages gathered near the rumored stranded Romans, on the contrary the 300 Romans were a highly motivated and veteran military unit.
@@hocestbellumchannel It must have been especially disheartening for the Gauls after their first poking attacks resulted in a bunch of dead Gauls and not a single dead Roman.

Absolutely loved this! Damn, wouldn't we all follow Caesar til the end of the world after something like this? One thing I'm curious about: do we have any more information on who the 300 cut-off men were? Like which Legion they were from, or who got them into that defensive formation which effectively saved their asses before Caesar showed up? I'd really love to know more if the info is anywhere out there!
Well made, although the commentary is not as clear as in other similar videos like those of History Marche, especially in the end when the music gets louder.
Its actually not a long time for ancient warfare, there would of been plenty of injuries mosltly from missile fire. Alot of probing meant not alot of casualties. Its actually fairly hard to kill someone standing in a cohesive force supporting one another, Its extremely scary to fully commit yourself to a full on charge against an armoured line of profesional soldiers.
Jaron Anderson full scale battles could take the entire day, but this was 300 men. That tenacity and sheer will power against behemoth odds is practically unseen in warfare

When you read about Ceaser's actions and successes you can see why his men thought so highly of him. Highly competent leader. If he had not been assassinated later in Rome, he probably would have been like Alexander and conquered much of the world.

The main force landed in the main Gaul port in the north of france (modern Calais) while his stranded troops were scattered East by the winds when crossing back over the channel.
Hmm iam not sure you are quite correct on that, according to Caesar the ships were carried a "little lower down the coast". Plus every description of the Morini tribes location coincides with the reconstruction of the video, since if the legionaries were blown off course to the east they would have most probably ended up inside the Menapii tribes territory, and it is all in comparison with the location of "Portus Itius" the port that Caesar approaches.
It's probable the Morini melted back into the woods, given the woods are depicted right NEXT to their (presumably company/100 man sized) units. Them fleeing up the road to get pounded by cavalry in the rear is Hollywood - not saying it's impossible, just that it would be really stupid for infantry who are accustomed to small scale warfare. Roman account of course would be "They fled in terror and the cavalry killed many in routing them." or whatever, stopping short of "Caesar glowed like a super saiyan sun god as he shouted in triumph and the men cheered and the earth shaked in acknowledgement", in order to make it sound like a "realistic account". The roman strategy appears to be "capture ground and then build a fort on top of it so that the enemy skirmishers can't just attrition us to death", followed by "capture more ground". Then do raids into the interior in order to out-attrition the enemy, so that they don't just raid roman supply lines.
