  • It is what it is. But I have to look at it as a win, win. 22 pounds is 22 pounds more than I thought I was going to get for a harvest.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes insects can create problems within a vegetable garden for sure.

You still did alright despite the infestation. Never thought about planting garlic. We should do that next year!

Yes I did not to bad with what we yield for sure. For me here in Northern Ontario planting Garlic is in the Fall, mid October. You would have to do some research for your area on when to plant is best. Thanks for dropping by Dan. Have yourself a good week.

Leave my bug net on all year round I guess. That should help Jason.

Do you rotate your garden? And keep one part fallow?

    • @danielcharbonneau222

I change it up every year and use a lot of natural fertilizers, a few horse ranches near by. My one garden is 16'X16' and my main garden is 14'X43' I only have a small double lot and to much stuff. LOL So I'm not capable in big rotations or leaving part fallow my friend.

Just wondering... you said you will need to freeze some and turn the rest into powder. Does that mean that they cannot be dried and stored the normal way now? Are the bulbs contaminated? Can they be replanted in a different area?

My final harvest, looked good! BUT. when it was time to peel the cloves for dehydrating I loss another %60 of the cloves almost everything was infested with the larva as well. I also lost all my onions and chives as well. I was very disappointed to say the lease. I didn't plant any chives, onions or garlic this year, I may not plant them for the next 5 years now. Savers BTK doesn't work what so ever. This parasite lives inside the stock and bulb of the plant therefore spraying the outside of the plant has no effect on the larva feeding / life cycle within the safety of the plant. Savers BTK only works on parasites that feed on the outer parts of a plant {leaves, flower etc.} like mites, ants and caterpillars as an example.

I thought that I did OK with 22 pounds, but, when it was time to peel, freeze and or dehydrate them I lost another 12 pounds to the larva. We inspected each clove and each one that had a small black pin hole in them had a larva in them. Some bulbs had two or three cloves in them that were completely gone except for the peel. I lost all my chives, Leeks and onions, a great loss. They were not even growing in the same garden bed, but, growing about 35 feet away in another bed. For me it was educational. I would not recommend keeping any, nor replanting any bulbs once the lava was sighted in your garden.
