Heaps of crazy in NZ if you know where to look. In Māori tradition patupaiarehe, also known as tūrehu and pakepakehā, were fairy-like creatures of the forests. and mountain tops. Although they had some human attributes, patupaiarehe were regarded not as people but as supernatural beings. Food for thought.
Hi Dave I'm a kiwi watching. I thought that you never seperated on a hike but you put the slowest person at the front. Being faster is no reason to leave Rosylyn alone in a country you don't know. It's so interesting you are covering New Zealand cases. Hope you make it over here. I'm sure you will really enjoy our fishing and hikes. The beauty is in the South Island. Be sure to check out Milford Sound.
It boggles my mind, that the husband went ahead and they decided to separate - "point of separation", right, Dave?? Even though she was much slower, i have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to separate. I never would do that, its called "the wild" for a reason. Cant understand it... dang.
I agree, very strange, I mean if my husband was slower I'd carry the bags and help, I'd never leave him or any in my group behind just cos they're slower 😉
Hello! 27 years ago Longer than It seems I met my boyfriend ( he came from a stint in Antarctica with a Co known back then as Antarctic Support Associates. ) We stayed in Hostiles on the South Island , and the hiked The Milford Trek. Lovely wonderful Island !Lush Misty And Dreamy ! Much Warmth
Thanks for the NZ stories Dave, I live next to the Heaphy track at the other end, very rural remote West Coast, planning to walk it this summer. I had not heard of these stories, was going to walk it alone, but maybe I'll try to find a walking companion!! The most beautiful scenery you'll ever find ❤
So glad it's finally starting to be "Huck Weather" in your neck of the woods. As always Dave, great stories. Thanks to you and your team for the great work you all do and the time you put in to bring them to us. Everyone have a wonderful weekend. I do hope that that federal legislation for there to be a national acceptance of all state's CCW permits among all states. It doesn't make a lick of sense to me that we don't have common reciprocity for these permits.
I'm a kiwi and I can vouch for the trout fishing. A fat rainbow or brown trout is my favorite fish to eat. I've tasted the odd tiger trout which is a crossbreed of the two. Delicious.
Had a young girl in my state who died a year or two ago hiking in fall. There are mountains all around where I live and people from other states like to come in and go hiking. The problem was, this girl had absolutely no idea what the conditions of the mountains are like in fall. The conditions are winter, of course. Once fall comes, you better be prepared for a winter hike if you are heading up to these 4000+ ft mountains. She went up completely unprepared, she had no spikes, no layers. She went up thinking it would be warm conditions, as it is in her state during the fall. They found her body in a drainage off the mountain, sadly. Her mom was the one who dropped her off to hike. It was mind blowing and sad to me that nobody around her had the sense to tell her she was unprepared. Wanted to share that since you were talking about unpreparedness.
Yes NZ is beautiful, maybe one of the most untouched place left on Earth. Although small, and I've only been to the North Island a few times.. I imagine the Sth Island is just as rugged. There is much thick growth around, and some very changeable landscapes with very dangerous water courses IMO. It is no surprise to me that they would be difficult to track, and plenty of places to disappear.
Great show as always, thanks Dave. Here in New Zealand we also have a version of bigfoot called the Moehau man which has been reported to have had interactions from the 1800s settlers right through to the present day. There was a local story of a sighting not far from where I live actually- quite recently only a few months ago. With all the mining & logging activity increasing they are probably losing their habitat like in the US & Canada. I should imagine there would be a sizeable population in the South Island whereby man's impact is less intrusive...
Hi dave im a new Zealander and have been a fan of yours for about four years now and i would not hike alone here for no other reason then some of the bush here is just creepy and i think other kiwis would agree.
Bear Grylls couldn't survive in the south islands bush on his show. He needed support! These inexperienced hikers couldn't either! Going in un prepared is a death wish
Hi Dave! I love your work and watch your videos in my free time. I admire your dedication to this topic and I would love to have a career similar to this. I will be starting college next year and this topic interests me greatly. My dream is to work as an investigator so I can help bring people home who are lost and bring others to justice. I was hoping you could give me some advice for when I start school or just in general to help me follow this dream and work as a crime scene/ missing persons investigator. Thank you!
Why would Steve go ahead? Surely the point of going away together is so you walk talk etc but why split up this wasn't a race.I don't understand sent he would feel the need to leave her no matter how slow she was? What's the rush.
Love your videos Dave..education and letting us know what going on in the world me and my family and friends love you loads and wish you all the best love from Wales in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 ❤️ ❤
Heaphy track is bloody amazing! Iv done it 4 times, starting from both ends. I really struggle to comprehend how you can get lost on the first day, its a 4wd track thru a pine forrest.. there is no where you can actually go..
As teenagers we visited Nelson and experienced strange things like waking up at night seeing a halo of light in the kitchen. A young Maori girl in her native costume sat upon the sink bench smiling. I whispered to my sister LOOK LOOK and then the apparition vanished.
G'day Dave, South Island Kiwi, who grew up in one of the most rugged spots on the island (think taking an icepick to the toilet bowl so it'll flush 😂). Just want to point out an interesting thing about the topography of NZ. Natural pits/sink holes are all over the place. Research where they find Moa bones. There's as much underground rivers as there are above.
Going hiking for more than 1 night take you PLB with you. Even if you put your pack down to go on a firewood or water mission take your PLB with you always. I have done a lot of hikes in the South Island of NZ and Stewart Island and you can get to some very remote areas. Yes our huts are awesome but often take many hours to reach them. A lot of tracks can get very wet and muddy and have very steep sections with ultra challenging sections with lots of tree roots often requiring a yoda master technique to negotiate and often our remote tracks require good route finding skills and a very high level of fitness and experience required. Follow only the orange triangle markers. I met 2 German woman that almost got lost by following pink markers that actually is for pest control. Our Weather in New Zealand is very unpredictable. Chance favors the prepared.
Hello from NZ, sadly many people have lost their lives in the outdoors here. Weather can change very fast, rivers can rise super quick. Easy to get lost and many souls found very close to tracks they strayed from...
Hello from the Manawatu in the north island of nz. The south island has less people more mountains with higher elevation. You can get lost if you walk six foot off the track. Stay safe with Huck.
Huts sound great. Can't have nothing like that in US because people don't respect anyone or anyone stuff. It's pretty sad. Thank you for your time Dave.
Hi. I'm watching from New Zealand. What a strange thing to do - to come all the way to New Zealand to go hiking and not have proper gear, especially decent boots for walking. I"m not being judgemental but just find it strange. I don't know that country there in the Abel Tasman National Park but from what I've heard it's pretty rugged. Thanks for this David and good to know other kiwi's are watching this.
Wow , there on to something here. Look at those old shows and movies. , and with an open mind today ,they where on to something yesterday, just looking back , and you are appreciated my friend the # one dog dad 😊
They be forgotten as soon as i made them. Sounds to me like she's talking about footprints. Is it her way of saying you wont find me. Just a thought...
Dutchsinse might suggest you dust off your earthquake preparedness kit there. Just watched a recent video of his regarding SE Missouri faultline areas (among others).

Hiya, from Otago, South Island of NZ. The "memories" be forgotten, as soon as I make/made them??? The Visitor's books are a good way of letting people know what your intentions are. The DOC (Department of Conservation) huts are all different, depending on the popularity, length etc of the track. Or access. I think you book to walk the Milford Track, and might pay for the hut? But I also think, there are many levels of hiker catered for. Also, the West Coast and East Coast, in my opinion, are almost like 2 different planets. Down the bottom of West Coast (SI) is Fjordland National Park. Native NZ Rainforest, sandflies the size of sparrows, and Wet! When you go through the Homer Tunnel and see the bush and landscape...it's like you travelled back to the Jurassic Period. If finances allow, do the Doubtful Sound Day Cruise, from Manapouri. Not as commercial as Milford (IMO). Beautiful, and nothing wants to kill you! Only bite! Lots of them, lots of times. Old local remedy...Marmite, I'm a Vegemite person, but Vitamin B12, yeast etc. Eat it, but they are that bad, you might try coating yourself in it! Then there's the East Coast of the South Island. The roads are straight, very little native bush, lots of dairy farms, and pine plantations. Some huts are in rocky, natural gravel type places, rugged mountains, very little bush in some places. Weather drier, warmer. And the DOC huts are great on the East, too. The coolest one I ever stayed in, was by chopper from The Conway River, into the Clarence Reserve, hunting. Arnold's Hut, I think it was called, 25 years ago. Inwards mountain range on the Kaikoura Coast, East Coast of the South Island. I'm sure you have to book it, and by chopper best way there. Go to DOC in the town you're staying in. Most have DOC offices, visitor centres etc. And they will let you know the best huts, the risks, and the level of the track. It's also a good thing to let someone know where you are heading. The South Island is really bad for cellphone reception. So don't rely on them. Beware, Giardia! Enjoy, NZ Native bush. It really is worth it!
I subscribed in app on my phone and never had an issue. I wonder if the device or connection plays a roll here. Much appreciated Dave. Well done as always.
I've never hiked before but I'm planning to start. What would you suggest I do when hiking? As a felon I can't carry a gun. And a lot of people say bear spray is not enough. Should I try to go with a group where someone has a concealed carry? I just want to be safe.
Apparently lake Matiri is haunted, and that's near Murchison and in a similar place to where one of the hikers from these NZ episodes went missing. I saw that lake Matiri is haunted on a local tramping Facebook group.
Hi David. I remember reading a story quite some time ago of a man on horseback going missing on the heaphy track. His body was never found but his horse was found in a stream bed with wounds appearing as if the horse had been killed and eaten by a large cat. There has been speculation and some small evidence of a population of large cats (panthers/pumas) existing in NZ and this could potentially account for some of the missing people in these areas. I was unable to track down the story of the man on horseback who went missing but i found a brief mention of him in a wikipedia article. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaphy_Track
I know this video is a month old. Reciprocity laws are ridiculous. The state of Connecticut (remember land of Colt Fire Arms and others) has zero reciprocity with zero states bordering us. Trump is gonna push for nationwide carry as the law of the land. He reminds us driving is a privilege and NOT a right ,yet we can drive all 50 states with any license. Our 2A is a constitutional right , yet reciprocity laws seem to be the accepted norm. Trump is gonna right this illogical wrong. Thanks for your wonderful channel and fascinating movies and books ,Dave. You are a Rockstar.
Hi David, I have been listening to you for a year. I am a headline junkie and I just found this article (Oct 3, 2024) , the first of its kind that I have seen. David, you are moving the needle, sir. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤ Bless you and your family and your doggie and 🙏 the work you do. Grateful. "The National Park Service describes the hike to Ostrander Lake as a "strenuous" 11.4-mile round-trip, which can take 8-10 hours with 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Rangers began searching for Thomas-Olsen after a ranger found a note on Olsen’s car saying that the hiker had planned to return two weeks earlier, Leeson told the San Francisco Chronicle. With millions of people visiting Yosemite National Park each year, the leading causes of unintentional deaths in national parks are motor vehicle crashes, drownings and falls, according to the National Park Service's mortality data from 2014 through 2019. Half of all reported deaths are due to unintentional causes. Yosemite National Park has recorded 98 deaths in that same timeframe, according to the data. " 🎉🎉🎉
The First Nation people in Alaska talk about people being taken by the Hairy Man. After being taken for 3 days human are transformed into a Hairy Man or Woman forgetting that they were human. The story goes on about finding and rescuing a missing person while it was in captivity of a Hairy Man. The person not remembering anything about their captivity
Blessings of fast healing, and who is the visiter, here, we are in the bear's house. The the house is getting smaller and this time of year there hungry, back in the day we used to tie bells on are body, if you ever been to a pow wow, you know what I'm talking aboot, good day and safe travels
Dave, since you are retired under PC830.1 , don't you carry under HR218 ?......It seems that would avoid all the local difficulties where agencies don't recognize outside CCWs?
@@canammissingproject Actually you can qualify at an agency where you live and forward info to your agency for your CCW......then fire the HR218 course and get your 218 card which gives you CCW anywhere in USA......just FYI.....
As per Dave's reply YES WE DO. We don't get to hear about them unless you know a hunter. They are not seen much as we don't have the public and thousands of tourist walking all thru the bush like other countries. We also have loads of UFO's to, and I'm speaking from experience.!!
@@dunlopfirestone portals or underground tunnels. In the USA they are trucked between states so nothing stopping them from flying them on cargo planes.
There are many wild hogs (pigs) in the New Zealand wilderness areas, they originate from the old English pigs released by Captain Cook from 1769. Wild hogs are omnivores. My main theory for the Ed Reynolds disappearance. With the new route from the Blue Lake Hut (where the discussion with other trampers took place), he would have walked west over the Moss Pass on the Moss Pass Track. Turned South on the Upper D'Urville Track, Upper D'Urville Hut. Then over the David Saddle to the East Matakitaki Hut.(where the note was found) East Matakitaki Route. The written description implies Ed has no compass/ topographic map or GPS device. At Bob's Hut, because there were insufficient route markers/ signage and without navigation aids, Ed heads up the wrong valley, north of Mt Maling and climbs up into steep serious alpine exposed rock environment. He cannot find the Three Tarn Pass, rather than descend the steep route just climbed & head back to Bob's Hut he descends west into the headwaters of the Glenroy River (where the foot print and watch are found). He walks the Glenroy River downstream to the farm house. Then potentially has a river (larger faster flow downstream) accident walking (North then East) back to the lower Matakitaki Track. Modern Route Guides, gpx and GPS & 1:50000 topographic should reduce risks. One of the official searcher's theory. "His theory is Reynolds missed the track marker on the opposite side of the Matakitaki River that he was walking on and accidently went into a gorge adjacent to Pretty Bridge and on the true left of the Matakitaki River." (which does not explain the foot print or watch in the Glenroy River headwaters) G Earth has the Heaphy track imagery.
"They'd be forgotten as soon as I made them (Sasquatch)." -Voice of God. What if she saw them before they took her, or possibly that is the mind speak that was communicated to her before she was abducted. I think reading through cabin/hut journals would be a good way to potentially gauge the surroundings of the cabin overtime/through the seasons. Specifically, I wonder what the other entries in the journal in her cabin said. Last thing, what if sasquatch are affecting tracking dogs olfactory systems, and misleading SAR without them even knowing. It would be interesting to give one or two dogs on a SAR a scent produced from Squatch tracks or the "grease/secretion" they tend to leave when they leave handprints to see if the dogs can follow that scent instead of the scent of the missing. Dave thanks for everything. I regard you as a trusted friend even though you don't know me:) Hope to meet you at an event someday.

I wonder if any men in the early 1900's asked their government for permission to carry protection out in the woods?
Hahaha right back then the Government probably insisted on carrying protection in the wild.
Um. Nope.
I’m carrying in any state I’m in fuck our government😂
You have villagers from all over the world Dave👍🇬🇧You're a great person.
I'm a Kiwi and I would remind watchers we dont have any predators -no bears , lions, snakes or the like. Love your program Dave I watch them all.
You do... you have humans (THE most successful predator)
Everyone should put New Zealand and Croatia on the bucket list, this recommendation is from a airline employee.
love croatia❤
Croatia is absolutely one of my fave places in the world. Absolutely beautiful. New Zealand was OK but quite similar to places in the UK.
Cant understand it... dang.
Ya too bad they weren't educated on the matter!
I agree, very strange, I mean if my husband was slower I'd carry the bags and help, I'd never leave him or any in my group behind just cos they're slower 😉
@@Claire-77 I'm pretty slow.
Thanks David 🙏🇺🇸
Been a massive fan for years from NZ!
Another Kiwi watching from New Zealand Dave! Keep up the great work.
Hello! 27 years ago
Longer than It seems I met my boyfriend ( he came from a stint in Antarctica with a Co known back then as Antarctic Support Associates. ) We stayed in Hostiles on the South Island , and the hiked The Milford Trek.
Lovely wonderful Island !Lush Misty And Dreamy !

Another great story. I can’t imagine losing someone in another country. The feeling of helplessness.
Hi Dave and Tuck! Much love to you all from Idaho County
I'm a kiwi and I can vouch for the trout fishing. A fat rainbow or brown trout is my favorite fish to eat. I've tasted the odd tiger trout which is a crossbreed of the two. Delicious.
Gidday from S.C. Thanks for mentioning my home, NZ.
Always watch entire episode.😮
What state?
Thanks Dave always interesting cases.
Another case in UK,young mum found dead in ruver, but personal possessions found riverside.
As a Kiwi, I loooooove your videos. TY Dave. ❤🤗
Ditto 👍
Hi another Kiwi here,And yes the south island is way more rugged & in some places almost prehistoric .God bless you all .Dan in NZ
Love from New Zealand ❤❤❤
Great show as always, thanks Dave. Here in New Zealand we also have a version of bigfoot called the Moehau man which has been reported to have had interactions from the 1800s settlers right through to the present day. There was a local story of a sighting not far from where I live actually- quite recently only a few months ago. With all the mining & logging activity increasing they are probably losing their habitat like in the US & Canada. I should imagine there would be a sizeable population in the South Island whereby man's impact is less intrusive...
If you have any articles about the man, please send them to missing411@yahoo.com, thanks
First time I've ever heard of Moehau man, interesting...

Understood, but these were quite different cases.
Thank you again Dave .very informative.

Another great video Dave! Thank You too for all you do!
Thank you!
Be a cop first.
Why would Steve go ahead? Surely the point of going away together is so you walk talk etc but why split up this wasn't a race.I don't understand sent he would feel the need to leave her no matter how slow she was? What's the rush.

Hi enjoy listening to all your podcast❤❤❤😊 God bless you and your family the time you give all is awesome your heart so very kind. Bless you
Im in NZ thank you for the cases.. Have you covered the Piha cases?

Hello from the Manawatu in the north island of nz. The south island has less people more mountains with higher elevation. You can get lost if you walk six foot off the track. Stay safe with Huck.
Huts sound great. Can't have nothing like that in US because people don't respect anyone or anyone stuff. It's pretty sad. Thank you for your time Dave.
That’s the truth! If it not nailed down you can count on it being taken. Sad

Holidayed in NZ afew yrs ago. Fabulous place and the Kiwis are top people. Go there if u get a chance.
27:20--- I had never heard of a "Beam me up Scotty" case! Whoa!! It shows how baffling that it really is!!
Dave just wanted to tell you that I was being unsubscribed almost daily for awhile but haven't been for a long time now
Unsubscribed daily.
Always hike minimally in pairs. Always carry bear spray where there are bears.

It’s insanely hot here in SF. Broke 90F at my place in Nob Hill. Which is crazy. Supposedly it reached around 105F up in San Rafael.

Dave, point of separation.... I wonder how "the missing" one is chosen out of the point of separation vs the other?🤷♀️ (Given a choice.)
I have an enhanced cwp for Idaho. This allows me to conceal in Washington State.
Apparently lake Matiri is haunted, and that's near Murchison and in a similar place to where one of the hikers from these NZ episodes went missing. I saw that lake Matiri is haunted on a local tramping Facebook group.
Hey Dave get the Utah CCL license. YW

Dave, since you are retired under PC830.1 , don't you carry under HR218 ?......It seems that would avoid all the local difficulties where agencies don't recognize outside CCWs?
You have to go back to your jurisdiction and qualify, that's a long trip for me, unwilling to do it.
