    • @Arareemote
      @Arareemote 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He always spoke of a tryptic that imparted an immense impression upon him from an early age. The journey from Jester>Philospher>poet. A jester simply tells jokes, but a jester who tells jokes based on very sound ideas becomes a jester+philospher, and if one can do so with such splendid and eloquent use of language then he will become the philosopher+ poet.
      Later in life he said he reached a point where he could do that tryptic Justice.
      (I'm paraphrasing of course but you get the idea)

    Somebody once remarked "that if you scratch a cynic you will find a disappointed and discouraged idealist". I believe this describes what happened to George Carlin. Once people become old enough to face reality and realize that the world is a terminal, they become bitter and hopelessly cynical. Just about every older person I knew became tired and crotchety.

    • @grandmalovesmebest
      @grandmalovesmebest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jim Thompson Yes. That is true. Losing all your idealism to realism takes years and pops your optimism. But it is also true that you get bored by age and look for new ways to become a new person. Especially, ppl think old folks are square (old folks word) and don't know anything anyway. Trying to make yourself heard, trying to be relevent, is so hard at a certain age that not only do you truly become crotchety, you have to be crotchety to receive any attention at all.

However, todays kids are the latchkey/daycare kids, not the Ozzie and Harriet/Leave it to Beaver kids of the Vietnam era. That’s such a childish understanding of the world. If you refuse to fight while I charge you with a machete, only one of us will live to influence the world. Soldiers aren’t dumb, they are there because they believe the same thing as the warmongers. Gangis Khan didn’t take over Asia because he tricked millions of soldiers in to accidentally supporting him.

      MKu MKu Butchered period! George just said what we all said back in the day. He was our spokesman bc he had a stage and could get away with it. Couched in humor that everyone loved made him infallible. Later on he survived bc the govts of the world knew he was harmless. To express what a generation thinks is one thing; to spur them on to believe what you are saying is something else. That is why George(probably) lived to be an old guy while MLK was killed off young.

    I have to credit George as one of the people for giving me guidance in the world. It's funny how comedians can do that, but think about it, do you know any group of people more real than comedians!? I mean... 90's comedians and prior? Not the current "i can't say that because it hurts feelings and my Netflix special won't happen" generation of comedians.
    George Carlin, Carl Sagan, Peter Steele. All VERY different but extremely influential people to me. Not that i ever accomplished some amazing feat of human discovery, and i sure af won't be remembered for a youtube channel with 9k subs, but i like to think i contribute to this place in a meaningful way, and i didn't turn out to be a Marxist Libtard so i'll call that good enough lol.

      Carlin equals brilliant, but he wasn't right about everything. I think his biggest achievement was t to become one of the greatest living provokers who is still relevant. For example, he was wrong about the environmental movement, not about the fact that the earth will probably survive us regardless of how we treat it, but about that if we can reverse our destructive activities to earth, then why not? He didn't know that we'd be having increasingly able technology and we're coming up on transitioning to renewable energy. It won't be that hard; it will just happen and life will be easier and incidentally no more destruction...

    • @skyler114
      @skyler114 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Mitchell S. Well he thinks humans are too vain, divisive, gullible, and corralled by people who dont give a fuck about them for it to matter. The powerful push a brand of environmentalism that exercises control over the populace and lets them keep their bottom line as they destroy more of the planet, just as long as it not directly harming them. There are solutions that aren't explored because they simply dont see it benefiting them more relatively.

      TBH, I think he'd make fun of people who use terms like "SJW" about as much as he would so-called "SJW"'s. Not that I care all that much what a dead comedian would say today.

      Diego Carrera Yeah, It's fun to read the moronic shit that SJW's type. Miller used to be funny, but now he says shit I don't like. Carlin hates America. Why are people laughing? Boo fucking Hoo. Both of these guys are (were) good people and great comedians. COMEDIANS !!!!! Making you laugh AND making you think was the fucking point!!!!

      Diego Carrera too bad Richard Pryor cant be on said mountain. for being a homosexual and fucking Marlon Brando from the movie The Godfather. This happened while Brando was a thinner man. Openly admitted by Richard Pryor... and confirmed as true by testimony of Richard Pryor's friends and his widow.

      Dennis Miller was already a Conservative at this point. He flipped in 1994. This tape is from Summer of 2001.
      Carlin wasn't a Partisan Leftist Hack. He was a "democrat with a small d".
      He routinely ripped on phoney Hollywood Liberals all the time.

    Many soldiers on both sides in the infantry would purposely shoot above the enemy because they didn't want to kill anyone. Similar to George's idea but without consequences of court martial. It is in the nature of many men to not kill.

    I love Carlin and have all the respect in the world for his comedic genius - especially his brazen, unapologetic denouncement of religion. My ONLY tiny criticism is his nihilistic narrative here; not because I'm some sensitive liberal snowflake spewing crocodile tears over miscellaneous wars/tragedies, but because:
    1) Overexaggerated nihilism is not anything, new interesting, or intellectually up to par w/ Carlin's other content. "I don't give a fuk abt any of you, hah!" Indeed, you and like literally everyone else watching the news and not giving a fuck as hundreds of thousands get blown up day-to-day. Surly teenagers use the exact same narrative in attempts to prove to their parents just how little they care about this or that.
    2) Aside from just being an uninteresting narrative, it also comes off a disingenuous, and - ironically - it draws attention to how much Carlin does care, and how much he must've been hurting inside. I know this is not a verifiable claim - and I'm no psychologist, but we all know what it feels like to be human; it's built in our DNA, the desire for self-preservation and the need for social interaction. Our species is successful because we seek out comradery, can develop languages, and share/record knowledge.
    Carlin isn't being honest when he says he simply doesn't care about anything or anyone at all. He is a liberal-minded and IMO kind-hearted, anti-war individual who clearly cares very deeply about the world's injustices.
    Literally within the same video, he jokes abt enjoying gratuitous violence/death on TV, and then a minute later he's making a VERY important point of "wouldn't it be wonderful if young soldiers/people just refused to fight wars en masse; the politicians can't just imprison the whole populace, right?"
    If he were a psychopath who truly didn't give a shit about literally anything or anyone, he wouldn't be thinking about the nuances of politics and war, making pointed criticism of the military-industrial complex, and making a thinly-veiled plea to young people to stop fighting wars. As a compassionate person who shares these views, I can confirm you don't just land on this stances randomly coming from a nihilistic DGAF starting point.
    And I don't mean this as a attack on him, it actually makes me feel sad that - even in his older years - he obviously still had a deeply-set holdup about admitting to be a compassionate person. Intellectuals like him are prone to sadness because they understand how the world works, and (assuming the individual is not mean-spirited/sociopathic), true intellectuals find themselves heartbroken by brutal injustices (many caused by our nation) across the world.
    But we can't just throw our arms up in the air like a teenager and try to pretend like we don't care. No shame in admitting that you care about justice and kindness.

    • @grandmalovesmebest
      @grandmalovesmebest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dremid445 Of course we care! It is just that you may get to a point where you realize there is nothing you can do about it bc you are an old guy, and you've been trying all your life and maybe things changed for awhile but now the very things you thought were mega important and worked and fought and devoted all your life to, havent really changed and now things appear worse than ever and you cant do anything about it cause you are an old guy . . .
