  • Today I took an excursion with an "active adult" group from the local rec center to this allegedly historic shopping district in Denver. I must that admit going to this "historic" street was a bit underwhelming. There is one block of businesses on S. Gaylord Street between Mississippi and Tennessee Streets. After we had lunch, we went out to look at the shops only to discover most of the businesses were closed on Mondays.
No one who was local could tell me exactly why the place was "historic" and there's very little info online. I'm guessing it's due to the older homes in the area that date back to the turn of the last Century, but we didn't go there to look at houses.
Our group actually agreed to cut the trip short from the 4 hours planned down to 2, but even then I could still find a few positives in the experience. Plus I made some new friends along the way.
    Takeaway lesson?
The key to not becoming jaded in retiree life is to leave behind preconceived notions and be open to new experiences, even if they appear to be mundane at first. Adventures aren't always action packed and exciting. It's mainly about flexibility: becoming adept at stepping out of one's comfort zones, expanding horizons, and accepting the reality of a situation, something that is essential if one wants to escape the stereotype of being "old, cranky, and set in one's ways."
Mind, your mileage may vary re: the 2nd oldest shopping district in Denver. Perhaps its a bit livelier during the weekends. If you want to explore this area, here's some visitor info: www.oldsouthga...
