This is the best one in my opinion. The new ones are good but I feel like the rawness of this film is hard to replicate.

"And the Road Warrior? That was the last we ever saw of him. He lives now... only in my memories."
Fun Fact: The costume department assembled the costumes by raiding junk shops, second hand clothing stores, sporting outlets, and S&M shops.
Liability Waved Fact: The tanker roll stunt at the end of the chase was deemed so dangerous that the stunt driver was not allowed to eat any food twelve hours before they shot, in the likely event that he could be rushed into surgery.
Shocking Backstory Fact: Humungus (Kjell Nilsson) was originally supposed to be Max's partner Jim Goose (Steve Bisley). The production decided against this, but left a few hints, such as horrible burns behind Humungus' goalie mask, the use of police vehicles by the raiders, and his own use of a similar weapon to the MFP's standard sidearm.
K-9 Enthusiast Fact: The dog used in the film, named simply Dog, was obtained from a local dog pound and trained to perform in the film. Because the sound of the engines upset him (and in one incident, caused him to relieve himself in the car), he was fitted with special earplugs. After filming was complete, he was adopted by one of the camera operators. Dog then went back to the trainer and lived a long happy life.

Max seemed like Moses from the old Testament..the man who helped ppl enter the promise land but couldn't or wouldn't enter it himself sadly.

@shootingreal5945 The entire series has interesting parallels to the Bible.
All the sequels are tales told by distinct, thriving societies in the distant, to far distant, future.
They are all tales of an encounter with this enigmatic man that they only knew as Max whose actions changed the course of their lives and the future of their respective worlds.
      The Great Northern Tribe
      The peoples who repopulated Sydney
      And The Citidel.

I get that the original Mad max is not what people now "think of" in terms of feel and style, but without it... you dont get Mad max 2, 3, 4 or Furiosa. Part 1 is a first time director George Miller on an EXTREMELY tight budget. But it was a huge hit, a cult favorite . and it's why the budgets multiply exponentially with every film. Btw the dog in this is nod to the film that inspired the whole Mad Max (and fallout) series... A Boy and His Dog (1975), a dark, post apocalyptic classic.

When I first saw this movie, it was simply called "The Road Warrior". I hadn't yet seen Mad Max, so I wasn't familiar with the back story, but this movie motivated me to search out the roots, invested me in the franchise, and is still the standard by which I measure the post-apocalyptic genre. The Gyro (and Gyro Captain) are key to this episode, and the revelation of the identity of "the narrator" is a delight.

Stunts in this movie are incredible, and real. None of that CGI crap. Some CGI works, but look at the diff between LOTR vs the Hobbit movies. EFX went backwards vs forward. Gladiator, for example, looks so much better than what we see now. Less is definitely more when using CGI.

If you're looking for the "Mad Max feel", then you should definitely watch the third one. IMO it's an outstanding film. I don't understand the hate, but I guess the edgelords got offended by it for some reason.

Agreed. It would be a shame to skip the third one, it’s my absolute favorite. I compare all post apocalyptic movies to the third, it’s gonna have that dusty feel and look that Fury Road has. It’s truly epic!

    • @bentdriver
      @bentdriver 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

The 3rd movie is okay, but it feels more like a Hollywood production and not a local independent-style film, that's what gives the first two films that really cold, darker and gritty feel about them. Some people see the 3rd film as a jump too far in the timeline. Even the second movie jumps a little bit far in the timeline. There could have been a couple of good in-between films.
If you look at the first film the Toecutter and his gang are extremely sinister compared to all the other antagonists that come into the next films. And Max is far more angrier and out for vengeance in the first two films. He s a little bit to soft in the third film. Its like they changed it to suit the Hollywood softies, same for Fury road and probably this new furiosa film aswell. The 3rd, 4th and maybe the 5th films just lack the same vibe of the darker and sinister intent of the first two films.

Thunderdome: Two movies enter, one movie leaves.
It is good and you should for sure watch it. Knowing ahead of time that the movie is made up of two completely unrelated stories makes it easier. Don't spend time questioning how we got from story 1 to story 2 and back to story 1, just treat the parts like two different movies.... both are good on their own.

Don't worry about Dog. The dog actor, whose name actually was Dog, was a rescue (he was on the verge of being put down when the production found him, where they trained him for the film by a stunt woman for the production). After the filming was complete, he got to live at a farm owned by another one of the stunt men for the remainder of his life. The TH-cam Channel Mad Max Bible has a video called "History of DOG from Mad Max 2" that details the character's initial design, the the discovery of Dog and how he was directed in the film. I recommend checking out the video.

When the buggy grappling hooks to the tanker, flips, and is being drug tumbling along behind, there's a stunt driver in there.
      ...
When you see a guy dangling from, or jumping onto the moving tanker, and you can't see the wires or the safety harnesses...yeah.
      None of those.

I used to get kind of miffed about the reception the refinery people gave Max, but it's actually very understandable. Max was acting entirely in his own self-interest: use the wounded man to get into the refinery and get his tank filled. HIS vehicle had a fair chance to dodge the mob and disappear into the outback, leaving the refinery crew to their fates. Everybody in Humungus' mob looked like Max and his vehicle, and he very well could have been an infiltrator.

My friend saw Mad Max before I did, he was scary to ride with after that film. I was amused at some of your comments concerning the original film, since they sounded a lot like things I was saying about Fury Road, different generations I guess. It's important to understand the context of these films, in MAD MAX society is crumbling, in THE ROAD WARRIOR society has collapsed and in THUNDERDOME society is being rebuilt. The set designer for this film eventually went on to do set design for The Walking Dead. This movie proved to be so popular that practically every post-apocalypse movie made after its release appropriated "the look". I saw this film in the theater close to 25 times and once the VHS came out my watch count skyrocketed to hundreds of viewings - never gets old. Saw the original Australian release of Mad Max 8 years ago and compared to the American release I originally saw it was almost like watching a completely different film. You do need to watch the entire trilogy, Thunderdome had a Hollywood budget and was more mass audience oriented so it has a very different feel than the previous movies while still keeping that "mad max style". Brian May's soundtracks for the first two films were superb.

Yup. Mad Max 2 aka The Road Warrior is awesome and one of the greatest action movies ever made. The stunts are amazing and insane with no fakery, just brave/crazy people going out there and risking life and limb to get so many spectacular shots. It is also hugely influential in creating/defining the whole post-apocalyptic action genre. The first MM is very good especially considering its tiny budget but this just kicks everything up to a whole new level. As much as I love Fury Road this one remains my favourite for its rough raw and super gritty feel. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is good too but is very much the glossy Hollywoodised take on the material but still has great stuff in it.

I know it was made in Australia but the first Mad Max movie reminds me of low budget US movies where the filmmaker had some good ideas but still hadn't worked out how to use those ideas. Then the filmmaker does a second movie and it's better than their first movie. Tarantino did Reservoir Dogs then Pulp Fiction, which was a big jump. Road Warrior is perfection. George Miller had it all figured out when he did this one.

In America the title of this film was simply referred to as "The Road Warrior" here in Australia it's just titled "Mad Max 2" when this movie first came out to America Mel Gibson was still an unknown to America at the time.
I have to disagree with you about the first film not being the best here australia it's still appreciated and considered an all time australian classic while Mad Max 1 was low budget I love the film simply for that it was just a decent australian action movie infact the first two Mad Max films are very highly regarded, if was to introduce someone to "Mad Max" it would definately be the first film after all it's the film that started it all.
Although the third film is not my favourite I still recommend checking it out just to finish off the original trilogy or this could be your kind of film who knows but the first two are definately the best in my opinon and "Fury Road" which definately redeemed the first two films after the third film.

If there wasn't Mad Max there would be no Mad Max 2 or Fury Road and Furiosa. Mad Max had a budget of $350,000
Mad Max 2 had a budget of 4.5 million, this is how quickly it had grown because of the original Mad Max movie. Fury Road had a budget of 185 million! There was no CGI back in the days of Mad Max and Mad Max 2 the stunts were all done by real people. That's where you have to respect both movies.

    1. This is the best. Including "Fury Road". That movie proves there can be too much CGI.
    2. The hot blonde chick the copter man was chasing😍😋😈
    3. Max not staying with those people left the door open for another adventure.
    4. The stuntman is Guy Norris' motorcycle-riding raiders hits a car, flies off the bike, smashes his legs against the car, and cartwheels through the air towards the camera, was actually a genuine and nearly fatal accident. He was supposed to just fly over the car without hitting it. He survived, but his leg was broken badly. The moment looked so dramatic that it was kept in the film.

Mad Max 1 was the best by far. The dialogue was fantastic, the characters the soundtrack and the whole Aussie feel to it was unique. MM2 was a great action movie but still doesn’t compare to the original, which a lot of guys my age (50 ish)will agree with. The younger generation needs everything at 100 kph and don’t appreciate a good story. Using the term “gas” is so un-Australian but had to be done so you Seppo’s could understand. Fury road was an insult to Mad Max. Yeah, great action movie, but a Seppo playing Max..Not on and it was primarily about the woman.

This one is the best of the franchise. Thunderdome is ALSO very cool, but it has a real 80s feel. Kinda cheesy.

The first Mad Max takes during socialite's collapse this is why the cops in the first film are using tow trucks Motor cycles civilian cars, scrap metal and leather as armour what ever they could get their hands on and Road Warrior is after what the series calls it The Great Collapse the Cops collapse shortly after the first Mad Max films you should definitely read the comics after you watch Thunder Dome it fills in a lot of gaps i the story. PS most of Lord Humongous's is made up of former police officers you can tell by the white helmets and cop cars the mostly use, then you have punks then last Skin heads 9Mixed between the good ones and Neo Nazi ones).

I think Road Warrior is a more realistic outcome of a nuclear war than Fury road. Everything would be made from recycled pieces and parts of the old world. Fury road had really fantastic cars that would have to be custom made in some factory. Also Mad Max in this movie had much more charisma, witts, personality. Seemed like a real person that suffered. In Fury road he was nothing. just a victim to be saved the the heroin Furiosa. I did not buy Furiosa as someone who could kick ass. I wish they would have cast someone like Michelle Rodriguez instead of Theron. So I would put Road Warrior as proper Science Fiction and Fury Road more into the fantasy category.
