Bilateral Lung Transplant Surgery | Scleroderma | Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) | Pneumothorax

Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can cause skin hardening and affect internal organs like the lungs, leading to Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). In ILD, lung tissue becomes inflamed and scarred, causing symptoms such as dry cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. In severe cases, the damaged lung tissue may form cysts, leading to a pneumothorax, where a lung collapses due to air leaking into the chest cavity. This can cause sudden chest pain and difficulty breathing. Diagnosis involves imaging tests (CT scans, X-rays), pulmonary function tests, and blood tests. Treatment for ILD includes medications to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system, while pneumothorax might require procedures to remove air and repair the lung.
For advanced ILD due to scleroderma, complicated by recurrent pneumothorax, bilateral lung transplant surgery may be necessary. This procedure replaces both diseased lungs with healthy donor lungs. During the surgery, the patient is under general anesthesia, and the surgeon removes the damaged lungs through chest incisions, implanting the donor lungs and connecting them to the airway and blood vessels. Post-surgery, patients stay in the ICU for monitoring and need lifelong immunosuppressive medication to prevent rejection of the new lungs. This surgery aims to significantly improve breathing and quality of life for patients with severe lung complications due to scleroderma.
