This is the video I want to share with anyone on the fence about Speedpaint! I love the way you explained your journey, detailing your experience learning how to use the paint to achieve the results you wanted.
Your experience is totally relatable to mine with regards to Army Painter Speedpaint. Your review is honest to the limitations and vast potential of this paint range. I think sharing your journey with others will help more people learn to love these paints like I have. Thank you!

I ADORE contrast and Speed paints. I’m lucky to have started in the hobby during this peak of paint performance

A good trick I saw on Eons of Battle, for seeing how paints will dry from this set: Prime the caps of their bottles white, and paint the caps. That way you can see how each of the colors looks when they dry.

OMG! I was trying to think of how to make the dot on the cap top trick work with these.

    Great review
I had the same issue as you and took a long break from painting then I went back when contrast paints first came out then army painter came out which are cheaper and better
The only thing extra that you need is some metal colour
I hope your review INSPIRES more people to try or go back to this wonderful and rewarding hobby of ours
    Well done sir

That's great to hear. I agree, these are complete game changers. It's like someone who hates driving being given a self driving car. Sure you still have to go along for the ride, but A LOT of the work is now done for you.

I assume you are very new to painting minis. So here's some things that'll fix the issues you've raised:
Your spray painting is too far from the model OR the environment you were in is too dry, which is why you're getting a texture. The paint is drying in the air before it hits the model. Test your spray paint on some card or paper before spraying your model to make sure you are getting the distance correct and that the environment isn't too wet or dry. You might also need to warm your can slightly (body temperature warm, not boiling hot!) and spend a few more minutes shaking it. I walk around shaking it while I get everything else ready with my other hand.
Speed paints are, honestly, only really good for a mass base coat. They do that perfectly and I would recommend them for that to anyone. If you start using them to paint tiny sections, you'll get the issues you're describing. If you try to put them over the top of other paints they'll likely strip them (unless they've fixed that... Army Painter, pls fix!), which is a shame because that's be great for that. G.W. paints don't seem to have this issue. You can stop this happening by putting a layer of varnish down first. But who wants to be doing that all the time.
The grey speed paint they make, Gravelord Grey I think it's called, mixed with another colour gives you an amazing black highlight. Do a layer of the grey, let it dry, then a 50/50 mix of grey and another colour, Highlord Blue works well, and paint that over the top. You'll get a black with a thin edge highlight of the colour you chose. I think most people would struggle to get a highlight that thin and colour correct. It looks great.
There are better and cheaper brushes out there than Army Painter ones. The best cheap brushes I have found are on Amazon (I'm sure they'd be a lot cheaper somewhere else) from WLOT. They have one of those stupidly long catch all titles: Fine Detail Brushes with Triangular Handles,10 Miniature Brush for Fine Detailing & Art Painting,Acrylic&Nail, Models,Watercolour, Miniatures,Oil, Warhammer Figures.(Golden Maple Series).
I bought them and they were great, they go down to a single hair point. They are triangular, so easier to handle. Stayed straight and pointy for months. I'd recommend them to any new painters out there.
Midwinter Minituers has a great video on how to keep your cheap brushes straight - hair clay after cleaning is the trick.
I hope you got something useful from this. Keep up the good work.

      Firstly, thanks for watching!
I have actually been painting minis for about 20 years. It's always been one of my least favorite parts of tabletop gaming. These suggestions seem great, but all of them take more time, more effort, and more practice. I'm looking for the exact opposite, less time, less effort, less practice. And with SpeedPaints I feel like I've found that in spades.
These tips seem like they'd be great for someone who's looking to make the most of their models visually. I however am not. I'm looking for people to go "That looks decent" from about 3 feet away. And with these paints and methods I've nailed that.
I will make a quick note on the brushes though. I try very hard to never buy anything gaming or hobby related online. I'd much rather support local brick and mortar gaming stores. So, while I'm sure there are cheaper brushes on amazon, I'm going to stick with what I can find that seems high quality and reasonably priced at my local shops, and for me, that Army Painter.
Thanks for the writeup. Hopefully others will see and will put it to good use.

Wonderful review. Great tips too. never thought to (hair) dry the paints, but makes sense that they run & blend together if you don't. I will definitely try speed paints.

Do you go over the models with varnish after you finish them? :)

    • @HowToRollDice
      @HowToRollDice  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have since filming this. Unfortunately I used the wrong varnish for the look I wanted, so my Bloodbowl team now looks like they are made out of glass haha. But live and learn.
If the question is 'Are the models shown in this video varnished?' then the answer is no, at the time, they were not. Just speedpaint over primer+drybrush, nothing else.

@@HowToRollDice You can go over with a matt varnish to make them non-glossy. I was primarily curious if varnish started to reactivate the speedpaints :)

Question for you on this new paint. Do you wash/dip all of the models you showed? It may be the camera, but your models seem less vibrant in color, compared to other videos on the Army Painter's Speed Paints for the same colors you've used. I'm not saying they're better or worse, just that they appear comparatively dimmer to others who have used these paints. I just ordered the Mega Set and am curious to learn more of your style for finishing. It is different than most of the other videos.
Also, great idea on the gentle heat hair dryer. I have noticed these paints do take longer than you'd think for watery paints. Thanks for sharing!

    • @HowToRollDice
      @HowToRollDice  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nunya,
I do not dip or wash. The models shown here are simply Primed army painter black, dry brushed with army painter matte white, and then painted with speedpaints. Nothing else. Some thoughts on the different look. I am not a painting channel. Most channels devoted to painting use very different lighting setups specifically for lighting close up shots of models, as well as different video editing and color grading choices for their videos. All of that can drastically change the way a model looks. I would guess that if my models where filmed in their studio and then edited with their color grades, they would look far more similar to the models they show on their channel.
I hope you love the paints. And thanks for watching.

Idk if you're into game of thrones but CMON's "a song of ice and fire" is a lot of fun and I'm loving their miniatures. Would love to see some game play and maybe painting tutorials. Really enjoying the content!

You're actually the second person to recommend that and in fact my local gaming store is currently having a massive sale and has a copy of the big box, I assume it's a starter box of some sort. So I may actually go in on that. Glad you're enjoying the channel!

If you don1t me asking, what camera and lens were you using for this video? It looks super crips and the zoom and focus was pretty great and on point.
