Day 13: Istanbul to Rome on Turkish Airlines - On Day 13 of our Round The World Trip with Star Alliance, I first had the most insanely amazing doner kebab I’ve ever had, and then we went to the airport, enjoyed the Istanbul Turkish Airlines lounge, before flying with Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Rome.
00:53 Tarihi Karadeniz Döner - My friend Tuba from istanbulfood.com/ says this place serves the best doner kebab in Istanbul, and she’s no joking around. The first thing you notice when you arrive to Tarihi Karadeniz Döner is the biggest round of doner that you’ll likely ever see in your life - it’s absolutely incredibly beautiful. Many people order their doner kebab for takeaway, but they have some seating upstairs where you can grab a seat and enjoy your doner kebab immediately after its shaved off. I ordered a plate of doner kebab meat, which was absolutely awesome. The meat was shaved perfectly, so it was slightly crispy, yet juicy and flavorful all the way through. Then I also ordered the iskender kebab (İskender kebap), another Turkish food I had been longing to eat. The doner kebab meat is sliced off, then combined with tomato sauce, sheep butter, and yogurt. Finally, to wash down the doner, I also had a cup of ayran. Total price - 46 TL ($15.45)
7:19 Taxi to Istanbul Atatürk Airport - After the amazing doner kebab at Tarihi Karadeniz Döner, we then checked out of our hotel and jumped in a taxi to the airport. Price - 57 TL ($19.14)
8:13 Turkish Airlines Lounge - I haven’t been to too many lounges, but the Turkish Airlines lounge in Istanbul is one of the most amazing airline lounges in the world. There was so much good food and so many drinks and beverage options. I was honestly pretty full after devouring all that doner kebab, but I did have a chance to try Turkish manti and then I went in for some salad.
12:05 Turkish Airlines Flight from Istanbul to Rome - We then caught our flight on Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Rome. Turkish Airlines is an amazing airline with great service, and I love how there’s a chef on board. For lunch I had the kebab and it was pretty good.
16:45 Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport - The flight from Istanbul to Rome didn’t take too long, and we arrive to Rome!
17:16 Bus to Termini Station - 5.90 EUR ($6.59) per person - To get from the airport to the center of Rome we took the bus, which dropped us off at Termini station. From Termini Station we took the Metro to Spagna station.
18:13 Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora - During out time in Rome, we stayed at Rome Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, located in a great location.

I know Karadeniz Doner, he puts that meat once in a day, starts selling about 11:30am, and nothing is left by 4:00pm, he never puts another one on that day and closes the shop. because of the post coup there was not many customers but normally there is a huge line. He prepares and marinates all the meat in the shop, does not buy it premade from a butcher or something. They also make their own breads fresh there. Asim Usta(usta means master, the white haired guy in the video) is the chef and owner for the last 50 years, he have many employees and but still prepares even sometimes cuts the meat himself. Guy have true dedication to his craft.

First of all, Turkish food is the best, and Iskender is my favorite food ever! It's just so special, and the yogurt on top makes it delicious. All the spices and stuff is just great. Also Sambal with it, another great mixture of hot spices makes it even better!

It's still one of our favourite citys....We flew with Turkish airlines as well, who were unbelievable.... Great service and sooo friendly. my apologies. I am sure it is still very rich and has a high fat content. I was just saying the dairy with meat, tomato and coffee...I wouldnt be able to handle it.
Actually , Yoghurt has very good bacteria which acts as a digestive enzyme. In fact, yoghurt is one of the healthiest dairy products as it`s high in protein , Calcium , good bacteria and a decent chunk of good old fat.
The worst eating habit of all is drinking coffee or tea right after finishing your meal. Caffeine strips your body from Iron and other important minerals. It`s highly recommended that you wait at least an hour before getting your coffee or tea after eating .

He did research and people recommend him the best food in the area he is going to visit. So 99% of the food is the best we can get.
I remember in a few of his videos he did try something and eventually said that's not his favorite or not his taste. I think he's honest about what he eats. And when he swings his head that's always genuinely good, haha.

Please don't base your opinion about Turkish delight just with that one experience with that cheap piece of thing that resembles a Turkish delight that they gave you in the plane. Good Turkish delight is slightly roasted and air dried to intensify the taste and make the texture less glue like. It's often much much smaller because it's so sweet and there is often a nut inside to give it a contrasting texture/bite.

That Döner looked insanely delicious. Great last meal in Instanbul, now I know exactly where to go if I travel there :) What I really enjoyed as well, I have to say, are the bits and pieces we got to see from Ying! Loved how she giggled when you took on that one bite of Iskender, bread and chili. Please don't be shy to include her once in a while :) I would have loved to know how that piece of chocolate cake was that she got in the airport lounge. YUM. Looking forward to all the Rome goodness!
