- Michel Jean Legrand (French pronunciation: [miʃɛl ʒɑ̃ ləɡʁɑ̃]; born 24 February 1932 in the 20th arrondissement of Paris - died 26 January 2019 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French musical composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz pianist. Legrand was a prolific composer, having written over 200 film and television scores, in addition to many songs. His scores for the films of French New Wave director Jacques Demy, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), earned Legrand his first Academy Award nominations. Legrand won his first Oscar for the song "The Windmills of Your Mind" from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).

When I was first learning piano decades ago, this song was in the "Easy" piano for kids book. But now I realize it can be made into a complex masterpiece by a skilled musician like Legrand.
Such a shame he passed away! absolutely fantastic music/ jazz playing, what beautiful tunes he wrote! He will be remembered through his music God bless him.

His choice he wrote it. He was known as a jazz pianist as well as a film score composer. He has done the opposite with some of his other compositions where they were originally fast orchestral pieces and he slowed them down with less orchestration eg Summer of 42.
