I only consume EVOO because of the polyphenol content is higher than most oils and that would help to combat inflammation, where I'm under the impression that ultra-processed seed oils contribute to inflammation, there wasn't any talk in this episode of this subject, possibly a future topic.

The statements made starting at the 2:45 mark that attempt to use history to discredit those who prefer to use the term "seed oil" rather than the more general term "vegetable oil" is more than a little disingenuous. First off, oils from grain seeds, beans, or vegetables go back a lot longer than a few centuries. It is more likely 5 to 10 millennia. However, those statements ignore the fact that the processing technology applied currently to extract oil from grains and vegetables to use for dietary purposes is far, far different than the historical process for extraction. The historic extraction process was basically cold pressing, similar to the preferred method for higher-quality olive oil. For only the last 100 years have solvent extraction, primarily using hexane, and hydrogenation been the almost universally applied methods for producing dietary oils from grains, beans, and other plant-based inputs.
My inclination, based solely on observational correlation to health problem trends, is that these oils, whether they are called vegetable oil, seed oil, or something else, are probably not the issue. People have been consuming these oils for thousands and thousands of years with few historic indications of having health problems at all similar to the current obesity and cardiovascular disease situation. The health problems that the seed oil opponents raise as concerns appear to have started to develop in the mid-1900s, rising dramatically from the 1960s onward as industrial hydrogenation dominated seed/vegetable oil production in order to get alternative cooking fats to market in response to the widely accepted, but mostly unproven belief that dietary saturated fats are a primary cause of heart disease. Now, we are where we are. Widespread, large-scale consumption of modern seed/vegetable oils and increasing rates of obesity, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions.
In the end, I realize that even if I am right, my observational correlation approach doesn't actually prove causation.
One point that is also relevant in the seed/vegetable oil vs animal fats debate is that people were also consuming animal fats for thousands and thousands of years with few historic indications of having health problems at all similar to the current obesity and cardiovascular disease situation. I have yet to see any reliable information as to the proportions of meat-based vs plant-based vs seafood-based foods that made up various historical diets. All we really know is that the variety in people's diets historically tended to be far greater than current diets. That is a point that both the plant-based and meat-based diet advocates consciously ignore in promoting their separate biases.
After all that, I still think there was a lot of useful info in the video. However, I still didn't see anything that could be considered a definitive answer on the oils issue and certainly nothing indicating convincingly that plant based on the only right answer.

This is an excellent video and shows many examples of just how many controversies there are in nutrition science about such a specific topic. I would love to generalize something though that I think people get way too concerned with little details and miss the bigger picture and often avoid topics regarding self responsibility. It's not just processed oils, flours and foods in general becoming more popular in modern times, it's greater intake of total calories combined with less physical activity with our ever-increasing sedentary lifestyles. This is often why no matter what diet you choose (keto, vegan, plant-based, Mediterranean, even carnivore, etc) they all are able to claim reversal of diabetic symptoms/condition. Even though they all focus on different aspects of a diet, they all result in a lower intake of calories and weightloss as a result. Weight loss ultimately reverses many symptoms of diabetes for those not permanently damaged along with a host of other benefits from not being overweight in general. We aren't ploughing our own fields anymore, or walking miles to the nearest market or school or place of employment, etc. We're a much more specialized society where we can order our food from a phone app and never having to leave our couch. We can consume 3000+ calories daily without leaving our bed or couch but we want to blame seed oils or McDonalds for our lifestyle choices. They're all important scientifically but in the populace, I often get in conversations with people who probably shouldn't be talking about min/maxing a diet to live to age 110 and focus more on a diet that will at least prevent a heart attack or stroke before age 70.

I rely on 2 Tbs of ground flax every day. In addition, I use cold pressed, extra virgin, organic canola oil. It's used pretty sparingly. But it blows EVOO out of the water. And it totally bypasses all of those crazy hexane claims, as well as GMO paranoia. When you're approaching a low BMI, avoiding oils is pointless for a 100% plant based diet. As for this talk about french fries being so deadly... I AGREE! But french fries ≠ "vegetable oil". The fact is, they are very high in 3-MCPD which absolutely is toxic. But that's a separate issue. Cooking on an open flame is not so great. And high temperature frying is not good either. It's a problem with cooking techniques, not the actual oil itself.

I am not an expert but this fatty acid oxidation product is concerning to me and why I don't eat deep fried seed oil. "Trans-4-hydroxy-2-hexenal (4-HHE) and trans-4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE) are secondary lipid peroxidation products in edible oils, which are cytotoxic and genotoxic. They could covalently bind with protein, phospholipids and DNA, further disrupting the normal function of liver, lung and brain." Probably refried oils are ok.@@Viva-Longevity

I know you covered the issue of iron overload and it seems legit, but there’s more of a deep dive that I’m interested in! I have heard that anemia in women is actually a low copper issue and low retinol issue and not a true “low iron” issue because it’s a transport and utilization problem and I’m like genuinely very interested in this lol; What they claim is that women’s iron recycling system is much more efficient than men’s, especially when we are pregnant, and we are actually often iron *overloaded* due to things like enrichment of food and that it’s hard for the body to rid itself of excess iron, and that low retinol and copper causes the iron to get “stuck” in soft tissues and not utilized properly and therefore blood tests look like low iron, and that the fatigue that comes from “anemia” is because they have low ACCESSIBLE iron. Also that our period helps with an “iron detox” and donating blood is also a good thing (which I know you’re a fan of!) I’m genuinely curious if this is true, and if it is true, is beta carotene fine to get the system working vs retinol? A lot of the people that subscribe to this theory claim it HAS to be retinol and not beta carotene 🙄 I’m sure beta carotene could do the job because it becomes vitamin a but 🙄 I would LOVE to hear about this topic since it’s really kind of a different topic!

I'm actually surprised polyunsaturated fats are so beneficial and better even than monounsaturated fats. Given they are likely easier to oxidize both outside the body and within the body. In fact making membrane fatty acids less easy to oxidize is one of the main alterations evolution does that increases a species longevity. I'd understand it if it was just within whole vegetables where such is protected by many natural antioxidant compounds, but even in highly refined oils? amazing.

The only strong correlation that exists is more fruits , vegetables , legumes and some nuts with low overall amounts of meat leads to longevity so long as the calorie intake is correct. The 2 fold problems of processed food is it's more desirable and less nutritious and thirdly preparing food in it of itself reduces consumption because it's work if one cooks at home. I think the donut or french fries are the perfect processed foods because they have all 3 nutrients that people argue about, some say it's the sugar coating of both french fries and donuts, some say it must be the fat, some say it must be the processed starch rather than just saying they are empty calories which is the big issue.

  • @BlissBlessHappiness

The major problem with most non-cold-pressed, ASAP refrigerated/freezed oils is their high content of Age-products (Advanced glycation end products)! AGE products measures, in our system, are demonstrated to be a strong indicator of metabolic health, among other correlates. And this content, of AGE-products, in foods is directly related to all the usual parameters affecting oxidation/degeneration (heating/storage/light/air). The problem with nutrition studies, in general, is that we are really comparing horrendous diets to slightly less terrible versions thereof. I would estimate that less than 1% of the people on the planet follow a truly healthy diet, with 12-20/plus pieces of color-full, well-cultivated fruits and vegetables (and herbs) daily, with a truly low Age-product content and, conversely, with many AGE product countering compounds in the polyphenolic (etc.) content therein. (all high fats and protein foods accumulate these products to a high degree when exposed to the former factors (which they are from the moment of conception, in the case of animal foods). Fresh nuts and seeds are relatively low in AGE products, but when you roast them the AGE content increases dramatically as well)). Note: I do not intend to indicate that polyphenols/phytonutrients only serve to lower AGE products, they are evidenced to support every system in the body, basically, and to counter any disease, practically.

Both of these regions are far away from the ocean traditional access to foods rich in omega 3's ALA or DHA/EPA are almost non existent, even though they both ate fish it was not on a daily basis. The traditional diets mainly consisted of tubers and legumes, avocado, veggies, local fruits and culinary nuts are available. They do eat meat and dairy products but this is more recently dating back to the past 100-150 years, before mammal were introduced into these regions, I wondered where they obtained their omega-3's? I had long talks with communities in the Chiquitana which is the cerrado region of Bolivia, they mentioned how their ancestors ate basically out of their "canchon" their small backyard farms were they grew crops and raised animals (turkey's, ducks, guinea pigs mainly) and had a wide variety of veggies and other crops, they wild harvested local fruits and edible nuts like Baru nuts. The academic research is sound no doubt, when it comes to omega-3's health benefits, however when confronted with these communities were omega-3's are not abundant it raises more questions.

It does seem to be the most heat stable food, but the foods we cook in them infuse the oil and how much it changes the oil really depends on what you're cooking. Cooking some foods in oil protects them, however, like beef, so it doesn't burn as much as it would directly on a metal grill. 🤷

You put all vegetable oils in the same bag. Olive oil is simply olive juice, it comes directly from the olive only by pressing. Nowadays, seed oils are obtained by less healthy procedures. Probably in the Middle Ages the solvents used to obtain them were nota the same. Study the process please. I come from and island in the Mediterranean, from a olive oil family maker.

Chris thanks again for another interesting episode!! I’ve been enjoying your videos lately on my spin bike rides. Biking season is maybe a couple of months away here in Tahoe 😢. I’ve been interested in testing my Omega 3 levels so thanks for the source of where we can do that. By the way did you end up finding a good vegan omega 3 supplement with both DHA and EPA? Thanks

So after watching all 46 minutes of your very extensive vid, I need to know the following: 1. Should vegans take oil supplements, if so, what dose and which brand do you recommend? 2. If not consuming oil to replace saturated fat, should vegans add oil to their diet or not? If so, which oils and how much? Thank you.

The more people who transition over to algae sources of EPA/DHA, the more likely that we can get a handle on the over fishing plaguing our earth.

Chris, excellent video as always. Perhaps you could do a video in the future about exactly what we are doing to the oceans and why you don’t eat fish. I’d be looking specifically for your reasons based on your scientific background. That would be an interesting video. Thank you for all the great information.
As an extra, I might add I’m still not clear as to whether it’s OK for me to use extra-virgin olive oil for both cooking and putting on my salads? I’m kind of new to this stuff and it’s a bit overwhelming trying to get it right.

    • @Viva-Longevity

Thanks Jack! Yeah, the oceans are a sad story. Most of us in earth science went into it out of a sense of wonder and awe for the miracle that is the plant, the oceans, the life...and we are all dying inside as we watch a miracle of our universe degrade as it's doing. 😔
As for extra virgin olive oil, it's not you, it's us. 😁 You will hear many very well informed doctors and scientists with different points of view. But I think you can get almost all of them to agree to a few things: (1) if it's used in a processed food, it's bad; (2) if it's used in moderation a healthy, whole food Mediterranean or Asian-style diet, it may not be a superfood, but in the scheme of things, it's healthy, certainly compared to saturated fats; (3) for people with heart disease and diabetes, they could probably do better with whole plant alternatives.
