    Nice review guys and you beat me to it! I actually thought rolling shutter in video was pretty well controlled in my tests, but then I'd been using the A6400 previously. I also agree about the lenses - the 15-45mm is definitely not good enough, although i do like having that wider than average coverage at the short-end. x

      Gordon and Chris: What are your thoughts on how the EF-M 22mm will work with the new sensor?

    • @dasaauto2024
      @dasaauto2024 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      doogieham Chris talked about this on the video. Resolving more than 24MP on an APS-C sensor is very difficult-and it’s perhaps the main reason APS-C has remained at 24MP for so long on so many cameras. Recently Fujifilm moved all the way up to 26MP, and Samsung swing for the fences with 28MP back in the day. I think 32 is overkill (almost as much as 80MP on FF will be).

    • @dasaauto2024
      @dasaauto2024 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gordon Laing The rolling shutter should be better in video since Canon isn’t supersampling their footage from 6K to 4K, but is instead using good ol’ 2012-era line skipping, and it’s soft image quality. Also, 15mm on an EF-S sensor is like 16mm on other brands’ APS-C cameras (like Sony and Fuji, the latter of which *does* have a true 15mm zoom kit lens).

    Great review. Your reviews look gorgeous and flow smoothly. How hard is it to make the review look like you are just talking about the product to a friend? I'd love to see a detailed behind-the-scenes video of your process in making these reviews.
    For example, how do you outline the review? Do you write a script, pick bullet points or do the dialog off-the-cuff? Do you have a crew or is it just the two of you? On this partly indoor shoot, do you use lighting? What is post like. Who edits it?
    Thanks for making these reviews such a pleasure to watch.

    • @thatjordandrake
      @thatjordandrake 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I'd love to do a BTS episode in the future!
      After spending some time with the camera, we do a short bullet-point outline of information that needs to be covered, then Chris and I spend a meal arguing over what our opinions are. We rarely have a crew, except for our Wooden Niccolls episodes. We use small lights when necessary, either a LumaHawk Shadowless 300 Round LED, or an Aputure COB 300D.
      Chris edits his Raw files, and sends them off to me, and I edit the episodes. Full length reviews are generally two days of post, and shorts are a day.
      Hope this gives you a bit of insight into our process, thanks for the kind words!

    I usually shoot with an EVF on my Olympus Pen E-PM1, and I love the fact that it tilts for low angle shots. I know most people wouldn't care much about it, but for a rangefinder style camera, I find it essential.

    • @villemononen5303
      @villemononen5303 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, tilting EVF is very nice indeed! Surely more fragile, but can be truly useful. I really like it for low angle shots (which itself is often quite refreshing change to usual), but also sometimes when working with a tripod. I go in weird angles with the ballhead and tilting EVF can save the day. Good stuff!

    about lenses: Sigma announced it will be releasing ef-m trio, most importantly 16mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4, combined with EF-M 32mm f1.4 and ef-m 22mm f2 - efm prime lens offering will be great value. Fast zooms for the tiny m6 is overkill way too costly (r&d investment)- adapting existing ef-s alternatives through m mount adapter makes more sense (gonna be huge anyway).

    One thing I would like to know: Does the M6 Mark II turn off the auto exposure bracketing (AEB) as soon as anything is inserted into the hot shoe (e.g. like the view finder seen in this video)? The M6 Mark I unfortunately does that, it has a tiny switch under one of the metal flaps inside the hot shoe mount. This makes it impossible to shoot AEB with even a simple trigger, like you can on the 6D and other Canons.

    BTW you can also connect EF lenses via a 3rd party focal reducer, which can make for some interesting focal length/aperture numbers (interesting for video too). IMHO Canon should make a first-party one.
    Oh and the World is short on zoom lenses that look as good as good primes, especially at kit lens prices.
    They should also turn out a higher-MP EVF option at some point - one of the advantages of it being modular. Provided they have the in-camera stuff to support that.
    It wouldn't suit me, but for a lot of people the approachability is good.
    Also worth a test with a 400/2.8 to see how much more detail you get than a 5Dsr/5DIV/etc... Way cheaper than getting a 600...

      Han He The M6 Mk2 does in fact have EFCS. It's in one of these reviews around here (panning issues). Also, I saw it in action at photoplus. All good. The panning stuff sucks but it's better than only relying on the shutter. these bodies are no longer made of metal, so if your lenses is too light, it will be blurry pics everywhere. About video quality: you said it doesn't hold a candle to the oversampled footage. I am interested how it compares to 5div and EOS R 4k detail. Lots of reviews were pointing out that those are less detailed than competitors and suffer from enormous RS but 4k on 5div looks astonishing to me, I don't need any more detail I can't see. If m6ii's 4k footage is anything like 4k coming out from 5div or eos r, I am sure me and most other buyers will be beyond satisfied. Also, M50's 4k, no matter how flawed, looks so much better than its 1080p, especially colors.

    This is a great review, except for all the whining about 24fps in the begining. This camera seems to be a great addition to the APS-C mirrorless line but I wish Canon had produced a M5 mark II (built-in EVF, same great dials, larger battery, etc) with the same specs as this camera instead. The only native lens that is sharp enough for the new sensor & resolution seems to be the 32mm f/1.4 but there will be EF-M prime lenses from Sigma in the market soon. I would love to see an EF-M 15-45mm f/2.8 (or at least f/2.8-f/4). For now, I think the M50 is the best cost/benefit out there.

    However finding alternative Glas for EF-M, EF-S and EF might be less a challenge than for the Fujifilm-X-Bajonett. With system native and cheaper 3rd party adapters available. Today many people switching to mirrorless like Canons R many awesome EF lens became available for a split of the price of new classes - a Canon L IS UMS II f2.8 goes for about $650 the initale price was close to $3000 and this lens is still one of the best zooms made in history of photography. While Sigma has pushed out many extreme excellent ef-mount primes through out the entire range from 20-135mm, redefining image quality and speed.

    I use this camera as a second backup for stills on jobs.. (I shoot restaurants mainly.) I bought it as a lightweight video camera to throw on a gimbal. This review is dead right. The biggest issue is shooting RAW stills and that buffer filling up even with fast cards.. It also chews through all of my EF lenses (even my "L" zooms) I use it with the sigma trio and it works like a charm.. If you're a 90's kid think of it a bit like a TVR cerbera on gran turismo... Its flipping awesome for video though, especially on a gimbal with a third party flat profile. C-log would have been nice.. but for the size of the thing its a monster.

    @ryankwan1934 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review Chris and Jordan. I was really interested in the M6 II, but the pricing and lack of native lenses capable of resolving for the sensor resolution really gives you pause. In Canada, it's $1,500 for the M6 II + EVF + 15-45 kit. That puts you within a hundred dollars of an EOS RP + EF to RF adapter + bonus battery. Now if you factor in the $630 CAD you need to for the 32 f1.4 to actually resolve for the M6 II's sensor, you're within $400 of the EOS RP + 24-240 + EF to RF + bonus battery kit. I know what I would take, even with the limitations of the RP.

    • @snowwalker9999

    • @danieltaylor1522
      @danieltaylor1522 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way reviewers treat this issue...especially DxO...is a pet peeve of mine. Lenses do not "cap" sensors (or vice versa). Final resolution of an imaging system is always going to be less than the weakest component, but improving ANY component improves the final result. Note that this is not an opinion, it's scientifically demonstrated and the formula for computing it can be found online.
      What does this mean in the real world? In the case of a M6 II the final image using a 15-45 zoom may not be as good as when using, say, a Sigma ART lens. But it will be better than the 15-45 on the old M6. So if you were happy with prints from the old M6 and 15-45 you are not going to be disappointed with the same lens on this new camera.

It would be less fiddly if you could cycle through its options via repeated presses on the button. And how come it you dedicate it in the menu to exposure compensation you have to press the button before turning the dial does anything? I find that a needless extra step. Just bought the canon M6 for $345 on ebay brand new. I know it's grey market but it's shipped/sold in the US with seller warranty and that crazy ebay + paypal two layers of return policies no questions asked that I've used countless times, giving free return shipping even for buyer's remorse purchases, and all items have been exactly as described.
    That versus the updated canon M6 mk II on pre-order for over twice the price at $850.
    Why did I not get the mk II even though it was so close to release?
    1. Price. Duh. It's over twice the price.
    2. Megapixels. I don't see the difference. If the extra 8-9 megapixel bump in resolution is actually there, then like the dpreview video mentions, neither native nor adapted EF lenses are sharp enough to resolve the extra detail. I can't even find the focus point in those flower shots. All these images (the full resolution jpegs from dpreview.com) look great zoomed out, but if it's gonna be this blurry even with the sharpest lenses available, I can probably make due with just 12 megapixels and not suffer much loss.
    3. ISO noise performance. It hasn't gotten worse, but it hasn't gotten better either. If they can achieve parity with their older sensor while increasing the pixel count, why can't they instead keep the older pixel count but increase the ISO performance? Because then they would actually be competitive with Sony in this department. Right now, anything over ISO 6400 looks like cellphone mush still.
    4. If they are skipping lines for 4k and it looks only marginally sharper than 1080p, why bother with 4k at all? The filesizes and processing are exponentially higher for very little benefit. And the original M6 has 24p cough cough.
    5. The dpreview video shows reduced tracking and autofocus accuracy at the highest drive modes, no autofocus at all for 120p recording, and a small buffer writing to the same slow SD card interface. There's a 30fps RAW burst mode that will lock up your camera if you don't time it properly, giving you only one or two chances. They all seem like crippled features designed more to embellish a spec sheet than to help you. If you are gonna set it to 5fps c-af anyway for the best balance of speed and accurate continuous shooting, why bother "upgrading" from the original M6?
    6. Some might not care but the mk II is larger and heavier in every dimension, if only marginally. The original M6 and M100 with a 22mm pancake are borderline pocketable while having far better performance than APSC compacts like the Ricoh GR series or Fuji X70/XF10. They are basically the breaking point of pocketability for cameras, while having better image quality than 1" compacts (if worse versatility). A few millimeters and grams added here and there can make all the difference. The Sony A5100 is pocketable. The A6000 is not. And they just get bigger from there.

      Sooo how do you like the M6 because I found a good sale too and now heavily considering it for my first mirrorless for both stills and TH-cam vids. It's not future proofed, lacking 4K capabilities but so far 1080P is more than enough for everyone watching on PC and phones and I will use it more often for photography. No EVF makes me nervous but the price with kit lens is so good right now, IF the camera is even better than its sale price. Please help...sale ends soon haha
