I feel very lucky that when we visited NYC in 1968 , we got to go up the arm to the torch and stand on the balcony... It was tricky getting up there , you had to climb a series of ladders that followed the arm shape ...

In the 1980s a campaign to restore the statue took place. The statue was cleaned and was shiny for about a year.

19th century French engineering, architecture and art at its finest. The face of this iconic statue is that of Bartholdi’s mother, Charlotte.
When you think about it standing there exposed to the elements all those years, especially that narrow arm extending so high into the sky, it is such a breathtaking feat. I couldn’t imagine the statue looking any other way. What an impressive modern marvel and a proud symbol . The whole concept of a stoic lady with raised torch alit keeping watch at the entrance of the harbor of America!

In 1987, I climbed to the crown. The torch is off limits to climb. In 2007, I visited the Bartholdi museum in Colmar, France where the statue was designed. There is a small replica there as well as in Paris.
Amazing work done in 1880. Hat's off all those who did it. I visited it in2018. Wonderful work.

If I ever go to New York (which I doubt I will) the Statue of Liberty is going to be the first place I go to. I've just always wanted to see it.

You didn't mention a forgotten and funny fact: eons ago the statue began to show signs of weakness: its structure was bending from the inside. Noticeably, the internal structure was designed back then by Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the Eiffel Tower.
Immediately the US press began what they do the best after praising the french for no good reason: smearing the same damn french who never do things properly and suck at everything. So the Eiffage company (current french construction giant and heir of the Gustave Eiffel's constuction company) was sent in NY, with the original plans, to check out what went wrong.
...That's when they discovered around a third of the rivets were simply missing. As in: they were not there although they should have.
After a rapid investigation, it appeared the local contractor who originally built the structure, in order to save petty money, had not installed all the rivets and sold them as scrap metal.
The statue's stability problems, amplified by the german sabotage of Ellis island in 1916, as well as its inaccessibility, all come from this.
Despite this shameful display, lady Liberty still stands strong on her feet. Probably by sheer arrogance. A testimony of her french heritage I guess.

I remember being told that story by my French/British Parisian grand mother whom's mother , my great grand mother never forgave the US for disparaging the french after being offered a magnificent present , and until her last breath she never agreed to entertain american dignitaries in her parisian hotel particulier or at her French Brittany Chateau (she was very old french and Russian aristocracy) or even participate to any formal or informal events held in favour of Americans and made sure her absence was more noticeable and more felt than anybody else's attendance . She loathed Americans with a passion, it was apparently almost comical .
Uninterestingly enough , i was born and partially raised in Arizona from a French British and Russian mother and a Danish Icelandic father , and my great grand mother told my mother that if i was to keep the american citizenship i would never be on her will and would not get a penny by the time i turned 18 . Fortunately and for other reasons , i renounced officially my american citizenship when i was 16 and took the Icelandic one, (a country i visited constantly in my youth and have always considered home) . My grand mother lived in NY for a while due to her husband's businesses in the US when she was quite young . And being forced to remain in the US for as long as her husband did some trading there , she felt extremely lonely , and often told me that she compared herself to the statue, a french dame, forced in exil and even had long conversations with her (in french of course, it is all in her diary of monologues with Lady Liberty, or should i say , Son journal de monologues avec Dame Liberte).
So for me this statue is like an old relative of the family (that didn't sound so pretentious in my head), i heard so much about, long before making her acquaintance . And even today every time i find myself in NY for work, i always have some french words for her .
And my great grand father signed 6500 francs (a fortune in those days) in bonds to help finance the construction of the lady of Paris (as he called her referring to the Statue of Liberty ) and met Mister Bartholdi and especially mister Eiffel on several occasions. But this was nothing compared to what my great great grand father did , He was on the board of shareholders of the STE , the Societe de la Tour Eiffel and spend over 30 000 francs on the project. Mister Eiffel was just called Gustave when he visited and Valentine Eiffel (his daughter) and my great grand mother were childhood friends.
So, though i am not French and not planning on getting french citizenship any time soon, i am particularly fond of these two monuments which are a testimony of France's true magnificence and legacy, its engineering achievements and its libertarian values.

Thanks for your comment , i think it is important to let people know about all the facts. Not so many people know about the missing rivets and why they were missing . I was just happy to read that comment and got a bit carried away in my answer, but the Eiffel Tower and Lady Liberty are important to me on a personal level.
I am not against Americans per se at all, but when some years back , Americans started calling french fries liberty fries, i found it so stupid my first reaction was, "If you hate the French that much, then send Lady Liberty back to her big sister in Paris where she just might belong".
Technically it was "freedom fries". :D we remember them quite well in France.
These were crazy times. Hopefully it didn't last too long.

Nowdays there are very few (if any) proper wonders made. Or at least none in Europe and north America. Search for "Burj Khalifa" and the "highest bridges" and such to see modern wonders.

Why would you measure the value of product per capita? To find out how much the people have, you have to divide your national debt by capita and calculate how much they have left. And compare the "human development index" and such.

You can go into the crown. I did.
I was in the head in 1981, seem to remember it was up some tricky stairs and there was only one other person bothered to make the effort. Can you still go up there?

The statue was meant to stand at the northern entrance to the Suez Cana in Egypt before the US.
Its said the Egyptian government rejected it simply because they found it unattractive.....

*Did you know that it's a copy?* The small original version is in the garden of Luxembourg in the centre of Paris.
There is a replica of the statue, in Paris, a gift from Americans to France in 1889.There is a also a replica of "Liberty's Torch" which is located not far from where Princess Diana was killed in that highway tunnel in Paris.

Just Google "Original Statue of Liberty", and you'll get to see it colorized, and in many states of oxidation. It was black for about two years in the 1890's. That's what I'd like to see, and of course can't find.

I never knew that the arm and torch were first on display in the US before being shipped back to France for assembly. I assumed that happened *after* it was erected in Paris and all parts were then shipped to the US one time together. Very interesting.

That must have been so impressive during that time since there weren't today's tall buildings.
The statue's dedication parade was the first ticker tape parade in NYC, which run along the canyon of heroes, the chosen path of triumphal marches in the city since the first welcoming parade held on the occasion of General Lafayette's return visit to America. The one statue parade route deviation from past and future parades was a one block detour to march in front of Puitzer's paper in honor of its role in raising funds for the pedestal.

As a fact, the statue of liberty was originally intended for Egypt and however, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was disappointed with that opinion and instead it ended up in the US.

Statue of Liberty was never designed as a gift to Egypt... There was just a statue project Bartholdi proposed to Egypt, to serve as a lighthouse, and it was rejected, that's all.

@@mattruth3843 this has nothing to do with any conspiracy theory. The windows were restored during the early 1980s restoration. At least some of them could open.
When I was six years old I went into the crown with my father and mother. My father actually grabbed me by the ankles and held me out the crown. Needless to say it wasn't good for my mental state at the time. My old man, a WII ex-Marine was definitely on the crazy side. Today he would have been arrested for that stunt. Well, today the windows are there. I am sure the windows were put there to prevent idiotic things from happening.

Video was not around in 1886.(lol) Go there and take the tour and see for yourself.There are also photos of the building process in books and on-line.
The video actually says it's built on Fort Wood, which already occupied the site.

Bartholdi’s working title was “Egypt bringing light to Asia” and was intended for Port Said, at the Northern End of the Suez Canal
When that fell through, Bartholdi repurposed the statue to depict a Roman goddess “Libertas”

Well this greenish color is given by the chemical reaction of copper in contact with the air actually when the coat is quite strong then it protected the structure much better from oxidation
