Whoa! Reminds me of how you can squeeze Tetris blocks through impossible gaps if they fit in the destination. Awesome concept! I wonder if a Crypt of the NecroDancer style minigame or mode where you have to move to the beat of a song could be fun 🤔
The way stuff moves in this reminds me of those lcd games (tiger electronics, game & watch, happy meal toys, etc.) with their "snap into place" way of moving from distinct position to distinct position. Really neat to see modern platformer stick to those limits for the sake of being a puzzle-y game tbh!
Graphics were made by a pixel artist named Grafxkid, I love his work too. By the way, v0.1 of the game is now available here: tardigrade-nx.itch.io/discrete-orange.
Cool to see people developing games for such an old console! It's a good way to get creative with restrictions, and funnily enough it's cross-platform because of how many emulators there are.
As a huge fan of logic puzzle games, this has me super intrigued. Stuff like Fire n Ice, Sutte Hakkun, Catrap etc are some of my favorites. The movement mechanic seems like it has a lot of potential for cool puzzle designs :0 Also, the music and graphics are fantastic. Instantly went and recommended your trailer to others!
This is a genius idea for a platformer. The movement in this game reminds me of self-inflicted glitched movement in the Mega Man Battle Network series's later games.
@@jackatk Sentence *Baba IS Move* was often possible in the game and it made the player jump in a similar way. Maybe it was also possible with Shift verb and multiple Babas, I'm not sure.
To me it seems more like the Tomb Raider and Hitman mobile puzzle games, those are all about manipulating movement turn-by-turn to attack/escape. But baba is you is always worth mentioning
Not too long. There are 10 levels at the moment. It's hard to estimate how long it will take for people to beat it, but I would say around 1~2 hours maybe? I hope I can do more levels in the future.
Love the title. Interesting concept. I don't think people get it. People are used to only seeing this type of movement in top-down tile based games like Necrodancer. I wonder if there's something that could be done with the environment or character animations to make it less jarring to people.
The hame looks very cool, and the movement gimmick is amazingly cool, but the movement itself is a bit dizzying. Maybe add a quick animation and a discrete sound to smoothen it out. 😊
@@robertglucose6120 it's really good! Wow, any plans for adding a death counter? I think that would add some fun for deathless runs. Anyone reading this please donate a dollar or more. It's actually good!
I feel like a smear effect would make the game feel more satisfying. What at first looked like inexperienced coding actually came out an interesting idea ive never seen done before. Simple, yet effective.
@@robertglucose6120Idk if smear is the right word but just a sprite that shows the character moving really fast between the pauses. Kinda like how Kirby looks when he's blasting around in the fireball. Idk, if the games fun it's fun so do whatever man seems neat.
This is very cool but the mechanic needs a effect or animation of some kind. Right now it looks like the game lags like crazy. Cool for people that have general knowledge of discrete numbers, but looks weird for general audiences. But as a concept, this really opens up for a lot of clever level design and the game looks very beautiful! Good job!
I'm sure it's a fun game and i understand it's intended, but not being able to shake the feeling that the game is running at 2fps is what kills it for me
I really like the “choppyness” to it, it’s a unique and cool mechanic that makes me want to play it

Thank you! The Game&Watch were my inspiration for this game, and you're the first to guess it right. 👍
I am in love with the artstyle. Can't wait to try it out!

O-o-o-o-ORANGE!?
Just get one with blast processing and it will be fixed, I think the game gear version is smoother

it's meant to mimic game&watch games

Agreed. You can even play GBA and other retro consoles from your browser.

@@robertglucose6120 Thanks very much for sharing this!
now we need a indiscrete green to accompany the discrete orange, and get a GREEN ORANGE
Very refreshing movement concept. I can already see the puzzles
the stars and hearts in the dirt are adorable! 🥺
I misread that as discreet, lol. imagine Annoying Orange except "very demure, very mindful"
New favourite Pokémon version
Some *Baba Is You* players might actually already be pretty familiar with this mechanic.
Interesting. I've played Baba is You, and never made the connection or used it as an inspiration.
How so?

This looks really cool! Very creative movement system
Ooh, the orange looks like an edit of a Galoomba...
I never thought of that before, but I can see the similarity. 😀
So this is where annoying orange ended after all those years LOL
Okay jokes aside this is genuinely interesting ngl
As someone who's also developing a game for the GBA I gotta say Nice work! The spritework is absolutely amazing

This is a dope idea good job bro!
Instructions unclear, my Game Boy Advance died of heatstroke.
(Jokes aside, this looks beautiful m8. Very well done.)
I love the concept of the game!! The visuals and music are also very pleasing, and overall the game seems fun to play!
Good luck with this project 🍀

Some subtle indicator for how far you're going to move might help.
You can use L/R for such an indicator, but it freezes the action.
This is a great concept and looks super charming!! Great work!!!
Thanks!
"Psst, hey apple!"
you not getting the chocolate stresses me a bit too much
A turned based platformer is so interesting!
This actually looks pretty creative, and fun too.
Duuuude that is so cute, it's like Yumetaro's little fruity brother!

this game needs a metronome background song
Feels like a Game & Watch

There are many games releasing for older consoles nowadays. 👍

I think it would be cool to see a preview of the 4 directions you can go
You can see this with the L/R buttons.
