- Today we will be looking at the Jack DIY a Chinese clone of the Everdrive N8 for the NES. Does it hold up to a real Everdrive or is it lacking???

Hey, i bought this thing 4 years ago from Aliexpress and recently i tried to update the firmware.When i turned it on, the cartridge detected that this jack diy is fake and won't play the games. I just now found out that we aren't supposed to update these fake everdrives and wish i known sooner. I just tried to use the update you posted in the description, but now the jack diy freezes at the blue screen. Is there any fix for this?
Should be able to format your card and throw the files on it that I have posted. Otherwise I would recommend getting a different sd all together, the one I received with mine always had read errors etc.
@@zebular I managed to fix it. I found the nesos v9.1 file and extracted it to the sd card and worked :) I appreciate you for helping me.

Nice skills on Contra. Lol OJ RC PRO AM. This device looks like a good alternative to an Everdrive. I have official Everdrive and SD2SNES flash carts only cause i didn't know the reliability of these Chinese knock offs. Great video.
Thanks, yeah at the time the Everdrive N8 was really high and this thing was like $60. Was worth the gamble since it's still working.

Hi! I love your review on the jack DIY cartridge as it is super complete and it shows the potential of the cartridge. I saw in your comments that you succesfully got Lagrange Points working on yours, have you been able to update (add) new mappers and if so, could you explain (or give a link about) how to get more things working on this awesome little device?

Thank you! I don't believe adding new mappers will work, Lagrange Point was an odd exception where dropping a couple files in the file structure makes it work properly. To be honest though there are VERY few games I've seen that aren't already supported. If you find Smoke Monster's Everdrive N8 rom pack he has a folder specifically for unsupported mappers, most of which are games you would never play.

You might just need to reseat your SD card. I had to do that pretty regularly, if not I would say download the backup I have in the description and unzip it to the root of the SD card and try again.

I have a clone and the translated Getsu Fuma Den rom does not work on it. It annoys me. Lots of other roms work.
so these can be played in nes consoles and clone consoles and comes preloaded? can you add games?

Hi friend. I purchased a Famicom Everdrive N8 China version and I believe it uses the same software as this one. I'm concerned about the mappers. Is it possible to play Akumajou Densetsu and Lagrange Point in it? How is the proceedings for it? I just have to paste the archives you provided in the SD? I have a japanese Famicom by the way.
Sorry for the repeating questions but there is not much tutorials about that issue and yours is - still nowadays - one of the best.
Lagrange will work for sure but yeah, just paste the new files onto the root of your clone.

Much appreciated! It worked great for years and now most games go to a grey screen after update. It seems 9.1 or lower is the Chinese standard but I can not find the files anywhere

2:55 there is nothing like that menu in the Everdrive N8 that I'm aware of. You can't mess with any settings. The most you can do is swap out the stock mappers with community made mappers.
that's the menu for the hi def nes. an HDMI mod for original nes hardware
Hello Jake, I have a huge request for you - can you check if the games with Camerica mapper work properly? I'm talking about Ultimate Stuntman, Fantastic World of Dizzy, Micro Machines etc.
Bartłomiej Bal yes it wirk fine but first you should change the mapper number in the rom to another one to work properly, google it

After more than 1 year, do you still use it? Is it working? In good shape?
Still use it, haven't had any issues aside from a few new mappers that aren't supported for new homebrew games.
I got a "pro" n8 clone last year and I can not find the files for it. It had save states which was a much needed feature for some NES games. Hope I can find them, but your files helped me in the mean time. Thanks!

Does it work with Japanese version of Contra? The one with cutscene and extra animations on some stages? I'm planning to buy one of these. I checked the compatibility list of consoles and mine seems to work with it (Retrobit Retro Entertainment Systrm), although I think it doesn't support vrc6 without a mod.
Yep, J Contra works. VRC6 I'm not sure on since my Hi-Def NES mod handles that. I don't THINK the cart has the hardware in it.
Jake Friedel yeah you have to have the capability to run the extra sound pack. You can add the rom, but won’t see any noticeable difference without your console being able to support the boosted audio. For example, it would work on the Super NT being that it is capable of running the enhanced audio.
Will I need an adapter for it to play on twin sharp famicom?

I think by default it's select + left.
You need to have a high-def nes kit installed though, it doesn't have anything to do with the flash cart.

I don’t think it’s worth it to support a company that ripped off Kritzz by not only doing a 1:1 pcb image copy as well as almost exact label copy, but also used Kritzz’ firmware without his permission and markets their product as an Everdrive. Some places they’re selling it even label it as an Everdrive and use the Everdrive stock photos. Also, you’re pretty much stuck with old firmware because the most recent firmware bricks the Jack DIY.
Didn't Kritzz bypass Nintendo's security (CIC chip) , to get their stuff to work on it? Not being licenced and all.. They all did something wrong, it's a pirates world out there.
Krikzz's flashcarts are ridiculously expensive. Besides, there's no moral high ground to Krikzz's flashcarts. Both Krikzz and the clones flashcarts infringes on Nintendo's intellectual properties anyway.
@@Grooveraider Man, don't get me wrong I'm not one who would put anyone down for having one, but you can't say there is no moral high ground. If Krikzz hadn't put the work in to develop this then China wouldn't have anything to copy and you wouldn't even have one for that reason. So no matter how you put it, you are benefiting from this mans blood sweat and tears without giving him any money. Also it is legal to have rom images of games you own, so there is nothing that Krikzz has done wrong. I don't want to make you feel bad, but what you're saying is just to make yourself feel better.

Anyone know of this will work on a famiclone? I have a cheap retro entertainment system and I've heard alot of these don't work on those.
Depends on if it's a hardware clone or emulation. Like it will work on the Micro Genius IQ.

This cart works on a PAL NES but on a famicom i get scrambled text, is there any solution ?
Sounds like you need a pin connector. NTSC carts don’t work on Famicom

Does your Sunsoft B5 mapper work for Gimmick's expansion audio? It's the only expansion audio that doesn't work for me, so I tried to get the fan made one from the Krikkz forums but the links are all expired. If someone has a working Gimmick mapper that will work in Jack DIY that they could post, I'd really appreciate it!
I'll keep an eye out, I luckily didn't need it since my Hi-Def NES mod handles expanded audio.
My NES is modded to support expansion audio and it works for the others. It's only Sunsoft B5 that doesn't because the mapper version is old. I bet if you boot Gimmick, you won't have sound effects and music will be a bit weird
Also side note, you saved my butt awhile back when I messed up the OS on my Jack DIY and needed the Jack DIY version you posted, so thank you for that too! :D

Just for the extended sound chip in the Konami games. Hell, we never even had the ability to use it outside of Japan because of whatever reason they didn't enable it. Shame because Lagrange Point and CV3 sound awesome with the extended audio.

It's from the official everdrive? Then DON'T update or it will break your clone nes everdrive. Latest firmware compatible with the clone is the one posted in this video.

Hi, great review! Just had one of these fall into my lap, so I have no idea if it works or not, I get either a grey or a green screen depending of position of the cart in the loading tray. I downloaded the firmware from the link you posted, placed in a EDFS named folder. Any tips?
So of course I should have tried it first without an SD card, says failure to initialize SD, can you please tell me what kind of SD card you are using, make size and how you format it?

Can it run rom hacks? Im curious how much it can handle without lagging out. Even emulators have problems with some mario 3 hacks
Yeah it will do hacks, just not ones over a certain size. The Everdrive N8 Pro is the only flash cart that can do the larger ones currently.

@@Raddobatto they have to be notably large game hacks like The Legend of Link or the new Super Mario Bros 3+ the same dev created. Also, if you've not checked out The Legend of Link, I HIGHLY recommend you do.
@@zebular so its based on data size of the rom? I dont see a single one that goes over 1mb, most barely reach close to it! "Mario bros 3mix" is only 8kb and that hack is huge! Is there other parameters I to check and see if it will run properly?
Question- Mine came with the loaded SD card, but I'm not sure how you got all the "chip enables" option screen and stuff. Did you download things and save them separately or what? Any help with this would be great.

yes like all my other chinese everdrives for sega, snes and pcengine but this is the only one that gave me so much trouble even at first boot it gave me a message "this product is fake return int to seller?!!"

yes i do please as mine didn't come with any and although i paid like 5$ extra i got the dc card adapter but no sd card preloaded with everything like the other ones, my main concern also my friend is that although i deleted the entire directory of the official OS off my SD card the everdrive still gives that error even if it does not have the sd card inside it, does that mean mine is bricked?

Jorge L Gamez I don't believe you want to update it. If you do, just make sure you have a copy of all of the folders currently on your SD card, that way if it doesn't work you can revert back to what you have.
Don't use the everdrive software to update your clone. It will not work. It will brick your clone....
What does copying the files from the SD card do? When updating the EEPROM...
Chris White the only update I did was throw on the files to make Lagrange Point play (and use the Hi-Def NES mod for expanded audio).
What exactly did you do to make that game work, if I may ask? By the way, loving it so far...played through Zelda with save states and finally beat it...The only issue I had was using the cheap SD card that it came with. Once I replaced that, it's been trouble free.

Nope. It is going for $100- $150 online cause people mistake it for the N8. N8 is the official Nes Everdrive. If you want to go for an Everdrive, go for Krikkz. Chinese clones tend to be garbage that are either broken, wired wrong and can destroy the console, or wired wrong and will cause a fire to burn your house down. Every Chinese product I've ever had was garbage
