I'll write up 11 real facts about this car (or try)
1) It does love oil, as this video states.
2) Car NEEDS to warm up to 2 ticks off halfway before driving hard.
3) The car loves to be redlined, it helps reduce carbon build up.
4) The healthier the compression, the more MPG. You can expect up to 26 with good compression.
5) The rotary engine is a 1.3L but is actually insured as a 2.6 and has 2600cc
6) Subtle mods can actually reduce BHP
7) The car is very high maintenance but very rewarding. If you look after them they can go forever.
8) they're insanely cheap to buy due to high running costs
9) probably one of the best/funnest cars you will ever drive.
10) I'm running out of facts!
11) Okay, i'm done!
@Bryce Czirr no roof, no back seats...great car but not comparable
@Bryce Czirr until u flip it
@@danoff__ 😂😂😂😂
"The rotary engine is unreliable!" - I have over 133,00 miles (214km) on mine.
"Oh, but how many engines?!? Lol!" - Just one, the original.
well, yeah. i have an "unreliable" bmw 520i with just over 393 000 km, so for a piston engine 214k isnt that much. im sure your rotary will last much longer tho
I hope you're still active on this account cause I am really interested in how you run your rx8 :) I'm looking at used 2004-7 rx8 with anywhere between 40k to 60k miles on them. I was wondering what's the key to a long lasting happy rx8. Do you have to redline it every week to clean out the carbon and the valve that only opens at high rpms. Do you premix any 2st oil into your fuel? Every other petrol fill up is an oil fill up roughly right? When u want to stop the engine do you have to put it in neutral and leave it for a sec then turn it off? What is the whole special routine with starting the rx8 and the problems with turning it off, etc?
All i wanted to see thanks man
@@GARR0N I own a 2008 40th anniversary edition and I premix at every gas station, For the whole redlining thing I still do it anyways because I love to hear it scream at that, and honestly don't be afraid to push it. Change your ignition system every 30k miles, there's a list on the rx8club. Its vital to making sure your engine is cool, and for oil it seems that thicker the oil the better, I'm still using 5w-20 but hopefully here soon I'll change it to 10w-30 or 5w-30, andddd amongst other things on that list that'll really keep your rx8 running well.
@@them26pershing59 to premix do you have your cats out?

+Chris. W Did I tell you it's got a rotary engine?
AND THEN IT GOES ROUND ROUND ROUND

who the hell didnt know it had a rotary engine almost every one should know that
Being as no ones sells Wankel engines anymore most people have already forgotten all about them...
doktorbimmer you mean people who don't know jackshit about cars? yea probably
Zuffenhausen Bill and people that "think" they know jack sh!t about cars... there is just as many of them out there too... Lol
doktorbimmer Ya know, there's one thing that's really cool about the much-maligned and fundamentally-flawed-in-many-ways Wankel engine: It's one of the only engines that people have heard of.
Anyway, when I tell people that I have an RX8, they often reply "That has the Wankel rotary engine, doesn't it?" ...Normally, that's all they KNOW about the Wankel engine -- that it's a rotary and that it's only found the RX7/RX8.
But I every time, I say, "Whoa! How did you know that?" and they smile and I smile, and it's cool. Have any other RX8 owners had that experience? It's actually kind of nice.
Brett McLaughlin I'm usually much more impressed when someone is actually educated enough to know the difference between a Rotary and the Wankel
KKM....
I owned a RX8 for nearly 5 years. Oil consumption is not nearly that bad. Also, half of the things on this list are aftermarket additions or just flatout opinions.
Each time you press the throttle, it injects oil. So no, not that bad at all.
+firebirdude2 does the guy mean oil consumption or fuel consumption
+Avijit Bhamra If they meant fuel consumption this car would make the Prius and any other Hybrid ashamed.
1000 miles/litre lmao
ok thx and LOL to the prius reference.
shhhh your poking holes in the carthrottle mantra
I have one of these at home. Its like that hot but awful college girl you used to bang.Very fun to drive, high revving exciting, good looking high performance car. However it sucks (oil/gas) better than that chick and you have to take care of her, tell her nice things, buy her crap for your 5 day anniversary... every 5 days,,, IE topping off the oil, and of course buying her all brand new shoes! This I did promptly after purchase! God I love a girl in heels.
It's always the nice cars that are the most costly, and the ugliest and slowest pieces of shit that consume the less, gosh, why can't it be the other way around? :/
I would say that most of the newer cars on the market today are all starting to look the same to me. When I bought the 8 it was between it and a significantly more powerful Infinity G 35 coupe. Sad thing is those G35s are impossible to find in 6 speed, and when it comes down to it just a glorified sedan minus 2 doors. Not very exciting. I would have went for the 350Z if I had a tinsy bit more money but I didn't. So I am very happy with the 8 in the end. Yes it has its quarks but its the most sport I could find for under 10K. Who knows maybe some day car manufactures will get it right and make a great looking V8 sport for an affordable price thats not a pos mustang. Something like the Scion FR-S with twice the power. Now we are talking car.
That car looks pretty sweet. You seem to have been lucky to find one
I top off my oil when the oil light comes on. You do know it's got 6 liters of oil in there, right? Even when it runs "low" on oil there's still 4 liters left, more than enough to hold you over until you can get to the auto parts store.
This review was priceless: a *perfect* analogy, JStank. Plus, just like a hot college girl, you got all your friends telling you "Are you nuts? You gotta dump her!" while most of them are secretly thinking "...but damn is she hot."
I've owned an 2004 Rx8 for a year now and its easily one of the best cars I've ever had. Mine has done 77k miles and it still runs as smooth as my friends 2010 Rx8 with only 25K miles on it. I use it everyday, redline it everyday, top up the oil every 1000miles and get it a proper service once a year. A little common sense goes a long way!!! If your thinking of buying one .... stop hesitating and just go for it.
Thanks! I will... 9 years later🤣
Thanks, I will go and buy one tomorrow. Bet.
I’m gonna give it a few more years when I have more money and space for an extra car, hopefully people still rip on them so I can get a cheap rwd car.
...lets not forget they have fuck-all torque which means you have to rev its bollocks off to go anywhere and as of a result, it drinks fuel like a scotsman drinks on a average weekday night
+peanuts2105 But revving is fun, especially with this kind of soundtrack. So who cares?
+peanuts2105 Yeah whats wrong with revving it? Its supposed to be a fun sports car, not a Mazda 2.
Isaac Brinson Hey, the new Mazda2 is one of the most fun cars in its class, and some of its competitors are the Citroen DS3 and Ford Fiesta. But yeah, revving is fun.
Ohhh, I was talking about the old Mazda2 like the Mazda2 they sold in America. I think your talking about the Scion iA for us, because they no longer sell the Mazda2 here.
Isaac Brinson True, the rebadge. I think it's rather ugly, to be brutally honest. The Mazda incarnation looks so much better, Mazda nose fits the design much better than the Scion one. The old Mazda2 is boring.
Mazda RX8= Illuminati.
hahahahaha
confirmed!!
Do you guys ever drive on a clean, dry road?
thank god I'm not the only one who noticed it
That's the UK for you
falagarius In some parts of the UK roads are practically never dry. I lived in Glasgow before and every time the pavement/road surface was dry it was a miracle and people would post pictures of it.
yes here in japan
PEOPLE you always forget Mazda's rotary cars are built with one merit in mind: HANDLING!
WHY rotary? Because light. Compact. Low center of gravity. Because near midship layout. WHY low power? Er-hem, because 1.3L engine. AND it still makes 232hp!
HANDLING HANDLING HANDLING. No more mentionings of V8's, turbos, etc. etc. etc. 0-60s, top speed, etc. etc. etc. Drinks oil like yada-yada-daba-doo.
$4k buys you an incredible handling car. Because for enthusiasts, RELIABILITY is OVERRATED! WE LOVE TO WRENCH!
+smokenrowboy Low power because its actually displaces 3.9 liters and is compared to Otto and Diesel engines using the 2x conversion factor meaning that its really a 2.6 liter by comparison..
Low resale value? Of course... who wants to buy a used car that might need a new engine next month...
+smokenrowboy turbos are important for rotaries
Hesayad I think you mean Wankel engine?
its difficult to actually turbocharge a Rotary type engine since the exhaust spins around at the same rpm as the engine.
Wankel's have shown increased power output at the expensive of reliability..
Unfortunately the Wankel does not produce significant improvement in efficiency when turbocharged and its over all thermal fuel efficiency is incredible low, one of the many factors that make the Wankel an obsolete design.
The real doktorbimmer ive argued with you before and im not doing it again.
Hesayad I guess you learned something since then?
Cheers!
I don't think the maker of this video knows a whole lot about cars because they didn't mention that it makes 230hp out of 1.3 liters of engine... That's not far off of 200hp per liter which is pretty great.
not that impressive really..
Hp per liter is an absolutely meaningless statistic. Sure, it's 1.3 liters, but it also gets the same mileage as an engine five times as big while making a fraction of the power. That's pretty damned inefficient.
It doesn't get 10 mpg...
The LS7 Z06 is 7.0 liters (more than five times as big) and gets 19/28 mpg while making over 500 hp. More efficient.
10072018 A. In real world driving the Z06 doesn't get 20 mpg driving around town lol. And B. Regardless of all that, I never mentioned efficiency. I said the RX8 makes almost 200 HP per liter which is pretty great. To my knowledge, no other production car can match that. Only street bikes.
All the fuel mileage of a V8 without all that annoying power.
10072018 Actually, it's a very powerful engine, and it's a shit load lighter than the V8. Not to mention that the Rotary engine has the best power-to-weight ratio of any Internal Combustion engine ever built! So yes, it is an amazing engine. The V8 is also very good yes, but there's nothing quite like a rotary (The RX-7's engine is FAR better than the RX8's, the RX-8's 13B-MSP was like an economical, toned down version whereas the RX-7's 13B-REW was a powerful pure-bread racing machine).
Ross Geller It's also smoother than any other engine ever produced.
***** Absolutely, and when maintained and run properly by someone who knows what they're doing, they can also be reliable engines too. All the stories about apex seals blowing and unreliability are nothing but scare stories from people who don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to a Rotary.
10072018 19mpg city and 25 highway with a 6 speed manual I think beats the hell out of my 8 city and 12 highway V8.
Ross Geller If they Rotary was actually held onto by automakers in the 60s and 70s, who knows where it would be now.
where were the 11 facts? this was just random stupid text with a few tidbits of very common knowledge.
I mean seriously..."This owner decided to add a threatening brake light"? "It loves to shake its bum"? These are the "facts" that every petrol-head should know? Absolute waste of time and effort
it seems like most of the videos from this channel are like this unfortunately.
To be fair you could make a video this long just listing all the Rotary design elements on this car. The bonnet, the headrest on the seats, lights, gear knob, it's everywhere :D I think it might have been a personal late-night challenge, to see how many elements they could fit into the the rotary form xD
Even better, have the narration done by Mr. Regular
thats a beautiful car
but so expensive for 231..hp and 5 rebuilts on the life cycle
JASON FABER The series I had engine troubles due to only 2 oil ports per cylinder. The series II (09-11) added a 3rd oil port as well as separate oil metering: much more reliable engine.
You know a wankel engine has no pistons or cylinders. It has rotors and ports.
This thing handles like it's on rails.
12: it's the best looking Mazda yet..
Dude it's not even that good looking
What about the FC?
*After 80.000 miles you need to replace the engine.*
Maybe with an RX-7 running 500+hp that's true, but the RX-8 is allot better in that regard, it actually stays allot tighter than a traditional piston engine because it has allot less moving parts. In my experience it seems like that anyway.
love the rx8. thanks for making this ct!!
The last caption says "So if you've had enough pistons, and fancy yourself some rotary...". It should say "So if you've had enough reliabilty, and fancy yourself some headaches..."
Still rocking my '09 to this day. Only thing I've replaced is the oil.
As a person who works on rotary's and races them, the problem with the engine is actually the idiot behind the wheel. Rotary engines have a pump at the front/ left of the engine called a metering pump which pumps engine oil along tubes into the rotor housing so as to lubricate the apex seals. What Idiot owners do is use a synthetic or semi synthetic oil thinking its better for the engine, but what happens is that as the oil is burnt the residue gunks up the apex seals and blows the motor. Stick to a natural oil only and the motor will last or delete the metering pump and then add 200ml of 2stroke oil with every tank full. All my engine have blanked off metering pumps. Last engine: 150000kms on the clock, good power and it doesn't use a drop of oil.
+Daniel Guerreiro Ever thought to separate the oil metering pump from the sump , feed it from a reservoir with castrol TTS or RS ? Would be easy it is driven by a stepper motor.
Would be easy. That's something Mazda should have done in the first place
+Daniel Guerreiro *Mazda should have abandoned the Wankel sooner.. like back in 1975.*
Daniel Guerreiro do you mind giving advice?
Can you do this for the car "Bugatti Veyron Supersport"? I think about buying one but I'm not sure
+Lobster with Mustard and Rice based on your name and 1 vid I doubt your even close to being able to buy one
+Lobster with Mustard and Rice especially if there aren't many supersport veyrons made, and they prob all sold by now
+Mezz Does Games Somebody can't see a joke.
+Chris Watson I know right "he need some milk"
+Lobster with Mustard and Rice I want one too but man, there aren't many colors to choose from.
I love this channel.
The r3 is amazing...almost got one before my lotus
I have owned one of these cars and it is true. They are impractical and sometimes unreliable. However, as a driving experience and as something to keep you totally smitten with love for your car, this does exceptionally well. The power isn't snappy like a big built v8. Whoever expects that from a 1.3 needs to drive some more cars. But the delivery is smooth and the balance of the car matches that smooth output to make you smile like the 8 year old boy inside should in a sports car.
Well-written, Blair! I couldn't agree more. Some people insist that either the RX8 is perfect in every way, or that one would be a fool to own one. The answer is more complex: To be sure, it has its flaws, but if it makes us giddy when we drive it, then maybe that's enough!
Brett McLaughlin Can you help me? I'm 17 and would like this car so bad and I have done my research on it. So far what I've gotten is it takes a lot of oil and gas and sometimes you have to just put the pedal to the metal while in park in order to keep it healthy. Any other tips so I can have it not fail on me (I plan on getting a standard).
Muffin Smith You're going to need $$$. Also make sure you buy from an EXPERIENCED owner(which is rare). RX8s can put huge pockets in your wallets due to idiot owners not taking care of the engine. In result, a engine rebuild is necessary. Also NEVER us Synthetic oil.
Jon Forbes If you use synthetic oil say bye bye to your engine. Just look up Maintaing An RX8 and read the forums, they help out a lot. Rotaries aren't good daily's either. Just the reality of things....
xCkillaxC Sounds like it has less to do with idiot owners and more to do with a pointless, finicky, oddball engine that no one uses for good reason.
11 facts everyone knew thank you very informative!
Ha that is one awesome video!! love the song too!
I always liked this car growing up, when the time finally came where I was looking into getting my own vehicle these were the first ones I looked at. Then I discovered all the issues... its really quite sad. Such a beautiful car had to be ruined by a rotary. There's probably a bunch of rotary fan boys that are probably going to get pissed off by this comment but deep down you all know its an impractical engine. Burns oil like water, terrible gas mileage for the miniscule amount of torque you receive and theres countless people online talking about how they've had their engines rebuilt numerous times and they barely last.
I bet this car wouldn't have been discontinued if they put in a typical BP engine or something alike. Should have at least made it an option.
The problem is that people don't know how to maintain rotary engines. It's not the engine, it's the people that use them and their lack of learning.
Gunnanator I really don't think thats the only problem, I've been on RX-8 forums, seen people who are dedicated to keep their 8's and they're on their 3rd rebuild. I find it hard to believe after the first engine they wouldn't be looking into taking care of it. But for the general public your right, they don't know how, nor do they want to have an engine that they have to baby... and when the general public strays away from a car it gets discontinued.
If it produced crazy power then it would be worth it, but it doesn't, and it sounds like a honda sometimes.
ZalaProductions
Not to be "that guy", but as an 8 owner for six years now, and as the second owner whose seen the rap sheet for his car, mine's still on it's first engine and it's an '04. People freak me out when they get on the forums and basically blame any problem on needing a new engine, I've fixed plenty of things on mine and thank God nothing has ever been an actual engine problem. Just my experience, though.
100, 000 miles on my 05 Rx-8. Only owner. Not one problem... ever. If you cant keep up with routine maintenance and let it warm up before you drive it then yea you're gonna have a bad time. And the car was discontinued for EPA reasons.
Nathaniel Mccray See this is what I'm talking about... 100k is something to brag about in an Rx-8 but not with other cars. You shouldn't have to worry that much about matinence or flooding your engine.. its a bad design for business. Discontinued for EPA sure.. but if had a BP engine that wouldn't have happened.
Fantastic! Now let's stick a radial in it!
Lol
Really want one of these!
fun fact. The oil is actually used to keep the rotary part running smoothly. Not like old oil sipping cars where its just waste. :D
Had an 1971 rx2 with a bridge ported 12A and raced it nearly every week end for 2 years with no mechanical troubles at all. Rotary's last, better than a V8 lump any day
Thats awesome, was it a built motor? I think rotary's are great but the cost effective mass production didn't work out for them.
Miss mine. Its not hard to maintain if you know what you are doing.
I want one! thank you for sharing!
Very pleasant alternative to the usual format of videos praising or trashing the RX8. Well done!
Great car... and if you like cars its the perfect car for you.
Cheaper than the nissan 370z... more powerfull than the subaru brz... perfect 50 50 weight distribution... rwd... 230+ horsepower... awesome sound... and Jeremy Clarkson approved
(Season 3 episode 5)
I'd rather like the other car that Clarkson approved 100%, the S2000 :D Has everything you said + it's a convertible
... I live in Canada so its not such a great thing to have a convertible but if you live in a place where there isn't so much flippin snow -_- its fine too.
Ivan A. Well I am german so not as much snow but only about 60 properly sunny days per year in average .Still I want one though + I'm a Honda guy :D
Un1qZ but it's a 2 seater and 2 door so it's less practical and insurance will cost you more. Probably a helluva lot better on gas though.
Brandon Spencer and on oil :D
An awesome car, I have the feeling it is highly underrated and unknown...
I have an '04, and have already replaced the engine once in '08 at 80,000 miles, and that one blew after after my coolant hose busted one day while riding it hard through the mountains. But I still love this car! Also Hinson Motor Sports makes a LS series conversion kit for $1,800 so I am giving up on the rotary and going to just do an LS swap. Its the same, if not better, on fuel economy and gives you much more bhp/torque and reliability.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!
looks good
This video was frankly on the dumb side.
Like hitting a click-bait link on Facebook, only to get a fluff-piece article that give you no useful info.
>"It likes to shake its bum..."
I want my 1:51 back that I invested to watch this, but now its gone...
How about the "This owner put a sticker over the brakelight"? Like what the actual fuck am I gonna use that for?!
Very interesting !!!
as a owner of a 6 speed rx8 I can definitely agree it's the most fun car iv ever owned the handle the pick up the response I find no flaws at all.apart from I really want the old school rotary pulse sound..other then that I love it alot..
I'd rather have a third gen rx7.
you and pretty much everyone into cars...
I have an 09 RX8 GT. Love the car. It's not the same as the FD, but still a great car.
Yeah just pull $20,000 more out of your ass and it's all yours.... They're 2 totally different cars.
Never said they where the same. But it's still a fun car. And I can haul my kid around in it. I'm on the hunt for an FD and an RX-3. Got the cash, but finding the right cars is tricky. All the FD's I find are beat up or heavily modded. The ones that are nice are asking way to much for them.
raxmarrone yeah the Fd is actually good
I hate the term "bonnet". It's a fucking hood.
It's a bonnet in the UK, and many Commonwealth countries, cur.
I know. I just don't like it.
A hood is the part of a sweater that covers your head. A bonnet is a front cover of the car.
James B
A bonnet can also be used to cover one's head, although it is typically worn by women, and was mostly popular in mid 18th-19th century England
lol when your county invents the automobile, you can call it whatever you want.
hell call it whatever you want anyway, but don't argue as to what it's actually called if its already been established as something else
Yout forgot to add that the Mazda rx8 is a piece of shit.
***** my rusty non existent mk III? I bet it is
***** Well the A3 Golf engine will no doubt outlast the RX8s engine
My cousin had an rx8 and honestly they're slow
ezeallday Especially when the apex seals have started to fail
ezeallday
they have 230hp so yea they arent supposed to be insanely fast. Rotary engines will last forever you just have to know what you are doing. unlike doktorbimmer. Its quite the opposite actually, race rotary motors outlive 4 stroke piston motors.
That car looks surprisingly happy even though it's got a rotary xD
Now, if only Mazda remembered to add some torque to this car I might actually consider it.
lol, you really dont understand how a rotary works
lol, I understand very well how it works. How can you tell from my comment that I don't? How is that commenting on the torque led you to ascertain my level of knowledge on the car?
The RX8 has a stock 159 lb·ft, which is laughable in a sports car, a Fiat 500 has 170 lb·ft.
The RX7 had 231 lb·ft which isnt ground breaking, but Is way more than the RX8
So go LOL somewhere else
Agreed. as an 8 owner it does need more torque, but the renesis was Mazda's way of proving they can create a (somewhat) efficient and long(er)-lasting rotary engine for the changing times. Unfortunately that meant no turbo which it desperately needs!
Calabunga P. K. when the 8 first came out I figured they had sorted the 7's longevity issues. But it seems they didn't. Did yours died at 80000 miles?
i just got a 08 rx8 6speed..and I can say that im surprised by how much torque it has...what it needs is some more high end HP.
I sent car throttle a message via Facebook asking them to do a video about rotaries or the rx line of cars. Don't know if I initially inspired this video but either way super stoked to see it. On the other hand, All of you idiots who keep saying the engine has to be rebuilt at 80,000 no matter what... Please do rotary fans, a favor.. Please shut up. Do some research. Owned many an rx-7 and not once have I had to rebuild it. Proper maintenance is key, like a sexy woman, High maintenance but worth it in the end. The biggest problem with these engines are the general lack of knowledge about them to the average consumer and the idiots who mod them with no supporting upgrades =(
The RX-7 and RX-8 are two different ball games. They may have the same engine type, but the way they're made and the time they're made in can be all the difference.
Great car as long as you are willing to put up with the maintenance. Don't complain when the seals wear out, just deal with it.
Owned two a few years ago. A true lemon.
Still rocking my '09. Only thing I have changed is the oil.
Fact 11: it get 15 mpg
Fact 12 need a new engine every 60,000 miles
T Mac
bullshit - im at 129k and still running well... Just take care of it...
GGN Videos i dont know man maybe yours but with all bad histories and comments i will not risky with that car
GGN Videos Just checked my Father's 2004 RX-8, 187,329 miles and is running like new.
Enrique Valdes thats pretty good , because is a beauty line but coul you tell me how your father cares ?
1 eats clutches all day
2 tons of maintenance
3 maintenance is expensive as fuck
4 shit gas mileage
If you really want a rotary that badly get its older brother the rx-7.
+Daniel Bargas Not sure where you heard it eats through clutches. I have 2 (and 2004, and a 2005) the 2004 has 69,000 and the 2005 has 32,000. No clutches on either. Besides oil changes every 3-5k miles, and checking the oil every week, no major expenses. It's a good idea to change the spark plugs, coils, and wires every 20-30k and that can be somewhat annoying and expensive $300, but nothing out of the ordinary. I do all the work myself, because I don't trust other people with my car and it's fun.
+ouimetnick I run my own garage and I have several customers who only come to me ( I own a jdm car garage and I am Mazda, surbru, Nissan and Toyota certified) anyway rx8's the way they are made love to ride the clutch, so the best thing to do to them is actually drive the clutch kinda hard. Basically if your baby your rx8 your bound to need a new clutch every 10k miles
+Daniel Bargas Daniel, you're dumber than you'd think. The RX7 is a much less practical/reliable car, because it is more of a track car. Meaning, the expenses anyone could have with an RX8 would be automatically doubled with an RX7, and you'll have a lot more reliability issues when driving on the daily to the grocery store, bank, or job.
The RX8 in fact was made with much better handling and reliability.
1. Mine is paddle-shifters so I would not know.
2. Not true, my RX8 is at 101k miles so far, and only oil-changes every 3k+ miles, plus a couple of check-ups.
3. Not true at all, the maintenance is the same as many cars (price-wise), just more complicated.
4.True.
+Lewis Nostredame the maintenance is about the same and the rx-7 is just better overall. Besides real car people don't daily track cars
+Daniel Bargas For twice the price and ten-fold the rarity. Good thinking
Neat and Instructive Video....Had No Idea, about the Little Rotary shapes...Some Info. was a GIVEN though...
Grea video, gave me a laugh..
The RX8 GT is an amazing car...just sold one very recently and missing it!
What year was this RX-8? Also, did you do any modifications with it?
+ONKOrrin04 The one shown in this video was a series 2 RX-8 (series 1 2004-2008) (series 2 2009-2012) The one in the video is an R3 trim.
Don't forget an engine rehaul every 37k miles
got so much LOVE for this car(rotary)!
the engine isn't the same as every other engine, it needs to be maintained differently. if you could get around that the rx-8 is such a fun little ride. easy to drive too, even if you wanna go fast.
VW 1.4 16V also drains up to 1L per 1000km. Nasty little machine lol.
There's something wrong with our engine then.
Not necesserily 1 litre :). What's wrong with yours?
some VW 1.4 fsi has that problem , i dont know why
Fact Number 1 It needs a turbo.
it will go Braaap Stutututu
It doesn't. a supercharger would boost the fun tough. (turbo would boost fatalities)

You're right, i wrote it. A pretty useless conversation. Are we done now? Have fun, then!

For every car make/model, it is only natural that there will always be haters, doubters and supporters. And, we all know every car has its appeals, strengths and flaws. It's just whether one can appreciate the car's strengths. For the RX8, one of its strengths is uniqueness, so it's not the car for everybody. Knowing how rotary engine works or even having driven one doesn't necessary equate to truly understand and appreciate rotary-powered cars. No one said that RX8 is the best/perfect sports car out there, maybe it is perfect to the owner. But, to be fair, it certainly isn't the worst. We should at least give some respect and credit to the RX8 for what it is and can offer.
Its certainly the worst RX model... and its the model that killed off the brand
Thanks car throttle, for lying to everyone about rotaries and making my RX7s and 8s cheaper in the used market!
I'd love to have a rotary car but there is only ONE rotary mechanic/specialist in my country..
mat safrick I live in East-Central Europe, quite a few self-claimed specialists but only one real rotary magician.
mat safrick
actually even in Switzerland , where you find a lot of RX-8, I had trouble finding a good one.
I don't believe there're any in Nigeria but i've seen like five RX8s and an RX7 over the years
My cousin ended up swapping an LS engine into his RX7 because of that.
DubRighteous so basically he ruined it
This car is so awesome!!
I have a 2004 and a 2010 Rx 8 and its the most fun i've ever had in a car.
Brap brap brap brap brap brap tiers screech
Very disappointing, thought the video would be more like the s2000 one but no :(
I own one, Rx8 is like eleanor for gone in 60.
Treat her well she returns the favour.
1. Oil changes on time, 2. Change spark plugs early and often 3. Check coils are firing 4. Keep eye on CAT or add straight pipe 4. Red Line RPMs each drive 5. Top up oil every 3 fill ups/91+ octane 6. Use 5w-20 non synthetic 7. Dont shut off engine when cold (no short drives) And your good to go, if you dont follow these rules add another 20-30k for parts and engine replacements for a 3yr period.
I love the RX8, theirs definitely one of these in my future.
U missed a rotor on the back bumper
1L = 14 pints?
Richard Swensson Are we watching the same vid? It clearly says it'd drink 1L every 1000 miles, that's true. Why the 14 pints are not related to 1000 but to 8000 miles is a riddle. So you see I did pay attention, it doesn't make much sense though.
I wrote the same thing and people said, that i could read. but i looked at the video multiple times now and can't spot anything about 8000 miles
Richard Swensson :) you are defenitely not the only one who smoked something. For some reason 2 other guys told me on my comment, that it was 8000 miles. ;)
Richard Swensson
it is there, just need to turn annotations ON. it was added over the video
Everyone who says these cars don't last past 80k is an idiot who's either never owned one, or didn't take car of theirs when they did. I have 118k on my original motor and it still runs great.
Great looking car.
i love this car, but i prefer the RX-7
RX7 has more awesomeness to it.
The RX7 looks better too IMO.
When you live in a country where gasoline (petrol) is USD $1.69/gal (currently), 17-18 mpg average isn't much of a concern.
+MrNotorius5500 It is a concern in a country that has the EPA CAFE Gas Guzzler Tax...
17-18 mpg in this GVW class for 2016 model year would be over $6,000-$7,000 USD fine per vehicle if they were allowed to be sold here
+MrNotorius5500 Yeah but Wankel engines have been obsolete for about 3 years now.. so its just a few of the old ones left on the road
+The real doktorbimmer mazda is developing a new one
Hesayad Mazda cancelled its Wankel engine development in May of 2009... production ceased on June 22, 2012
+The real doktorbimmer Clearly, you missed the 2015 Tokyo auto show. Just throw "RX Vision" or "Skyactiv-R" into your search bar.
I've got a 2005 RX8 manual. I've put 85,000 miles on it. It gets 22 miles to the gallon hwy and 18 in town, which I thought was pretty decent for the kind of performance it gives. It's true that you have to add a quart of oil for about every 1000 miles. This was "by design". Mazda design the seals in each rotor to seep a small amount of oil to prolong seal life I've never had any problems with it. It is a blast to drive---but I don't tear it up
I really want one but it comes with so many problems... like the fuel consumption. It consumes the same amount like a ferrari 458 and thats not acceptable for 231 bhp...
And the oil consumption is retarded forget taking it on a nice roadtrip
yeah man thats very bad , i never change my Ford Mustang Gt 2000 , right now have 14 years and not have any problem with it , only the ABS light on , and traction off control does not work jajaja , has all functions, a bixenon package head lights , AC air conditioning at 100 % thats it and 4 months ago... ran 15 seconds 1/4 mile bone stock at 1000 feets over sea level
If you want something that handles better than an RX-8 wait a few years for the turbo BRZ Subaru plans on putting out or wait for the price of the current FRS and BRZ to drop and pop a bolt-on turbo kit on it and you got 350hp of awesome fun and great handling ;)
OspreyBravo18
the oil consumption mentioned in the video is WAAAY more than the truth.
it will normally burn about 200ml of oil every 1000kms. thats about 300-350ml for 1000 miles
at least it is designed to burn oil, with special oil injectors.
on the other hand, there are piston engines that burn more oil than an RX8, and ppl think it is normal, and they have no problem living with that everyday
The FRS or BRZ still handles better according to reviews i have seen.
As much oil as it uses, maybe you should put premix in the gas tank like a chainsaw!!! Hahaha
+woohunter1 I've actually heard of some Rotary owners doing exactly that believe it or not. Works well too, according to them at least.
+TonyisGaming True. The reason the engine uses oil is because it acts a bit like a 2 stroke, just like a chainsaw. Thats the main reason the car isnt around any more, Mazda couldnt get it past the latest emissions standards, partially because of that. Some of the engines own oil is used to lubricate the rotor tips, adding 2 stroke oil to the fuel helps that and will prolong the life of the engine. The main reason so many engines died early and gave it a bad rep' was because of owners not checking the oil and doing little things like this. My own RX8 is well over 100,000kms and still going strong.
simonmd2000 It's good there are owners like you to keep these things alive for future generations to behold. Keep it up! :D
If you'd like to contribute to the fuel bill, i'd be happy to! ;)
rumors are next rx will go into production in 2020 for anniversary year for mazda there using hcci got the rotary to pass emissions rumors still from what i have been reading rx- vision or 9 has been green lit the rotary will live on
I love the beep in this car that tells you to shift
When I was younger, like, 12 or something, the RX-8 was my dream car. Id' still like to own one, but I've grown out of the idea.
+BDAYZ Me too. I still like it very much, but now that i learned some things about reliability issues of the wankel engine, it just seems like a dumb idea to get one. Still a very beautiful car.
+George Badass the same was for me but the more i got into cars the more i "hated" the rx8 because of the problems the wankel engines have.
+Δημήτρης Αργυρόπουλος Mαγκα μου Ελληνας ειμαι.. ;)
You forgot to mention that their engines go kaputt when they get close to the 100K miles..A guy at my school had one and its engine already went at 85K miles
Then he is a moron with no clue how to maintain a rotary engine. Properly maintained rotaries will last just as long, if not longer than any piston engine. And yes, proper maintenance is more expensive.
Yea keep telling yourself that..
Morten Ramsing I don't have to. I have a 93 in my garage with 207k on the clock and still perfect compression. My brother also has one with 188k, still perfect compression as well. They both dyno out to nearly the same power as they did the day they were built. It is a high maintenance engine, you have to treat it as such. 3k mile oil changes, RELIGIOUSLY. Premix with Pettit Protek R. I expect to get at least another 50k before I rebuild mine and streetport it.
It's not smart to argue with someone who knows what they're talking about ;)
***** Why am I the silly twat? We agree lol.
@@socialghost4400 fucking troll... propably dont have car and driver license...
Nice car indeed, but used ones sell for a bag of peanuts. The engine is not very good either. Sounds epic, runs smooth... when it runs that is.
Yes, there is a very good reason stopped selling them...
doktorbimmer
Yea too much maintenance for the average idiot, otherwise a perfect long lasting motor.
***** It has nothing to do with maintenance.... its all to do with the engines basic design faults, apex seal are simply not reliable... the just fail too easily.
They don't even sell cars with this engine anymore, it can no longer compete with more reliable and more efficient piston engine technology... the Wankel is obsolete because its simply not as good, just get over please.
*****"Perfect long lasting engines" don't get recalled for premature engine failures at 40,000 miles... Mazda recalled over 60,000 engines under the NHTSA recall in North America
doktorbimmer You dont know what you're talking about. The rx8 was simply in production for 2 long when Mazda switched management and didn't align with the perfection of the 16x for that reason. Its 100% confirmed the 16x will go into a production continuation of the rx7. No longer a vague reference or a section on mazdas website. its confirmed. Stay sad.
My RX-8 is amazing. It's at 107k miles and not a problem. Most people here don't know what they're talking about but other do have a valid opinion.
I have a 2005 RX 8 with 100k and still running like new love that car. Best car i have ever owned.
+Ross Martin was the engine replaced under the big defective engine recall?
I bought one recently, and it blew up on me after a week. The engine just died and wouldn't turn over. The car lot returned my money, but I can say for sure DO NOT buy an RX-8 if it's got around 80k miles.
Indeed.. The life of the motor is around 100k Kilometers. A good car, but a lot of bad things on him.
***** Man but for all that hassle I'd rather have a Z or something.
lol it was probably just flooded, the rx8 had a problem with that and it was a kind of easy fix (for the average person).
Keith Shannon Yeah, used to happen to mine sometimes, I stuck the starter from an R3 model and made a few tweaks and it's been solid as a rock for 20k miles now.
Mack Williams lol really? Mine have over 160k and still running like a champ been everywhere
wait, what? 1L of oil every 1k miles!? Lol something is definitely wrong then. Mine probably ate an extra quart in 4k miles.
Different models have differences in their oil metering.. it could well be that yours isn't drinking enough oil to keep the apex seals lubricated. They had to make concessions for emissions.
I am premixing just in case though. What you're saying could be true as well. I may have to get that checked.
spotted 2 yesterday!
I love my RX-8. It's a great compromise between an all-out sports car and a sensible grocery-getter. Unfortunately, it burns as much gas as both cars combined.
One of the single most unreliable engines ever conceived.
kicksoffs MIT is working on an inverse designed that is not much larger than an iPhone and produces about 5hp. They have a theoretical 70hp diesel rotary engine...other than seals they aren't really that bad of an engine. Much more revolutionary than a piston engine which has a ton more moving parts than just the 3 in a rotary.
kicksoffs lol if you cant maintain a rotary engine its not the car's fault. I've gone past 225ks on my 04 and it still runs perfectly. so fuck you and fuck your piston engine dude
Bardia Mansoori Well you would be one of the very few exceptions.. not the rule..
RX-8s had one of the worst engine reliablity problems of any car in 3 decades.. almost 2/3s of all RX-8 sold in North America had an engine failure while under warranty... and thousands more failed outside of the extended warranty and NHTSA defective engine recall program.
The RX-8 gutted Mazda's
profits and and net loss of millions, it sent the company to the very edge of bankruptcy.
Problem is though, not very many people are working on improving the Wankel engine with the exception of MIT. These engines can be very good if they would work to refine them. Besides you could do what some have done and take the 1.3L Rotary out and drop in the engine from a Miata.
Ratkill9000 The problem is that 26 of the biggest and best engine manufacturers in the world and 100s of the best universities and research institutes came to the exact same conclusion... the Wankel engine is not as good as reciprocating Otto and Diesel engines.
The research has been done... the concensus has been reached, and the Wankel is now obsolete... no longer in series production anywhere in the world... its dead.
Lame
Damn, I never quite realized of just how good this car looks.
We bought one yesterday. So far im loving it💗😊
