Thank you, so much, for this recipe! ❤ My 14 y/o chow-retriever mix was recently diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease and a grade 2 heart murmur. I've been spending so much time looking for information on how to make complete and balanced meals for her - there's so much wrong information out there that's "vet approved" (you've seen it 😂 ), which makes it so hard to find good information! Thanks for this. I always weigh my dogs’ kibble so this recipe will be easy and I love the variations that can be done. I already grind eggshells for calcium. There are videos on YT. Boil them 20 min, spread out on a baking sheet and bake about 20 min. I don’t recall the temperature. The standard guideline I’ve seen for what to feed is 2.5% of ideal body weight. God bless.
Great video! Do you have a recipe for pork and turkey? My dogs allergic to beef so Ive been on the hunt for a complete balanced recipe with other proteins
Love this thank you. I home cook and pretty much this is the type of recipe base i use. Its difficult to find anything other than chicken livers here only occasionally can i get pork when i purchase half a pig. I have used chicker liver 5% but add pork kidney 5% plus i use heart of duck gizzards to cover the potential fall in vitamins of chicken liver. Is what i am doing helping on vitamins or not quite getting there. Your opinion is most valued. Angela from Portugal
Ive got a 13 yr old male Chihuahua and a 16 yr old female whom we just celebrated her " Sweet Sixteen". I've been cooking for them forever and your video will actually tweak it in an even more nutritious manner. 75% of their diet has been organic chicken. Should I flip it to be more beef based? I live near a ranch so I get my ground beef and liver all pasture raised.
This is great information. I have been making my dogs food for a little over a year now. I have been unsure of the nutrients so I mix it with high quality kibble. However she has diabetes now so I am working at getting her off kibble. I just started her on Ziwi brand dried beef , still mixing it with homemade food. I would greatly appreciate any nutritional information you have for diabetic dogs. She is 12 and a half years old Chihuahua, Minpin mix.
Hello there, this is a brilliant recipe. I have a question. Is it okay if I feed my dog kibble and fresh food? For instance, I feed my dog three times a day(for now), for breakfast and dinner, I feed her kibble, and for lunch fresh food.
Idk if you reply to comments, but I have two dogs I am going to begin cooking for because its SOMEHOW cheaper than kibble, and I dont like convenience fees and like to make things myself. This will work great for my golden, but are there any tweaks I could make to the recipe for a dog who has a lot of trouble losing weight? Like typically only succeeds with 240 ish kcal/cup foods but also dont digest them well because, theyre obviously garbage. I had her on raw before with my other dog but she gained. Her thyroid is clear, I think its a spay issue.
My GSD is highly energetic. We have over an acre and she’s very athletic. She full on Race sprints all cars everyday. That’s a 400ft round trip. Won’t she need more carbs? She’s 4 y/o
For dogs and humans, there are NO essential carbohydrates. Wolves and coyotes raid farmers fields for mice and other rodents. They don’t go after the grain. Most dog food companies are owned by cereal companies who have an abundance of cheap grains. My dogs eat sweet potatoes and carrots when I have lean days for them as they are hungry. When I give them meat days, they don’t touch the vegys.
I don't know how anyone affords premium whole dog foods kits or products for large dogs, much more if you have several. For my 130lb akbash 2 years-old it needs 6 to 8 scoops of regular kibble (Summer vs Winter) and the air-dried or dehydrated foods take nearly the same amount. I'd go bankrupt. It would cost $170 every two weeks for the cheapest formula (Unkibble). Up double that for Sundays and RedBarn dehydrated. So this is what I do. I feed 50% kibble (rotating brands), 35% lightly cooked whole chicken, fish, and/or hamburger with its broth and bones. Every week I give these supplements two to three times weekly: green powder with probiotics and fish oil. Raw eggs with crushed shells.
Cod liver oil would be an omega/fat supplement. I believe the beef liver serves as a source of essential vitamins, so the two would not be interchangeable.
This diet is pretty much keto except for the root veg. The only root veg I have found that isn't loaded with sugar are rutabegas and I use them in place of potatoes. This recipe is practically tailor made for diabetics.
Cups and tablespoons are not precise (1 cup is different depending on how much you pack into the cup), and are different country to country (1 cup: USA is 240ml, Oz is 250ml). I recommend buying a food scale. Weight is the same regardless of country or measuring technique. It will make your cooking so much easier and precise.
My question too! Wouldn’t your higher energy dogs need carbs to replace what they use? My GSD full sprints @ every car that passes the side of our fence (approx 200ft one way)
Through the years I’ve heard grainfree diets are best for dogs. I went for many years without a dog and now in the past 2 years I’ve been told by my vet(s) that grain free diets have been linked back to heart problems in dogs. I didn’t see any grains in this diet. What is your opinion?
According to several vets I have talked to: Grain free " was like a fad diet". They are finding out that this is not the best diet. Think about what is included in a real wild diet. Predators frequently eat the internal organs and gut first. Most prey for major predators are herbivores. This usually includes "grains" or grasses. So, that means the predators are also eating grains. I feel that as long as you are feeding a nutritionally balanced varied diet you are honoring your animal family members. I like to feed a combination and rotate their diet.
I am confused. So converting the listed dog weights, the max is 33lbs. I have a 73lb dog, and a 50lb dog. How am I supposed to figure out how much to feed? Unless I am converting wrong, bad at math. Can anyone guide me?
Your 50 lb dog gets 605 grams or 1.334 lbs per day. The 73 lb dog would get 883 grams or 1.947 lbs per day. So if you made this recipe everyday for 7 days on the 8th day you would have enough to feed both dogs one time as a leftover. I think...😮
I think 85 15 would be excellent. I wouldn't be concerned with even 80 20. Far is great for dogs as dogs enter ketosis quickly and utilise fat for energy. Fat has more calories so with 80/20 I would probably reduce the total food quantity a little. If you really want you could remove some of the other fats from the ingredients like cooking with sunflower oil. If you have the right pan cook without oil and that will balance out the extra fat in the beef. Rotate meats and they can have higher lower fat meals over time. Honestly we are over thinking all of this stuff. Almost no one is going into this much detail when they feed their family. If you feed your dog this recipe everyday it will be eating better than humans. 100 percent.
Way too complicated, buy lean beef meat, chicken and mix in some vegetables. Cook and serve with sprinkle some of multi vitamins and salmon oil. Costs me $30/ week.

Yes you can freeze, should be fine in the freezer. For a fridge, I wouldnt do more than 3 days because its human grade food and can go bad
