    That lived up to every minute of the suspense!
    Informative and a rousing telling for such an understated delivery. I was actually angry for a moment when the "End of Part Three" sign came up. It also it also really shows how the British made use of the narrowing of the plateau where the ravines came up from the East and West, as well as the command of the ridges to force the Russians to narrow their attack so that had their superior numbers were waiting in lines to meet volleys and steel instead of swarming over and around. The aggressive, early defence to keep them there probably saved the day.

      Glad to hear! Hopefully you got over your anger... Part 4 should be along in a wee while. It's such an interesting, but horribly confusing action.

    An excellent account. Far more interesting than any book on the subject. My Great x 3 Grandfather was a corporal/sergeant in the 47th regiment and was certainly at the battle, probably in the Light Company. We are fortunate in knowing quite a lot about his army career. Having been badly wounded in the trenches before Sevastopol, he was in the casualty list published on the front page of the very first Daily Telegraph. By an odd coincidence I used to work with a great x 3 nephew of his commanding officer, Lt Col Haly.

    What a well done video! This series is some of your best work ever. It is a maxim of tactics that "surprise happens in the mind of the commander," and this video really shows how the picquet system creates a kind of "crumple zone" (like on a modern automobile) that cushioned a force against attack and allowed a commander to respond effectively and rationally despite being surprised.
    Also, the video work you did here was exceptional. Both the mapping and the figure movement on the maps made things extremely clear, and the visual effects you employed, such as the fog filter, were quite impressive, as were the massed troops shots (shades of the Clone Wars!).

Those valleys and gullies were like passages into the heart of the British position and I can see why they call this the soldiers battle. Small units and local commanders showing great initiative and courage. Astonishing that they survived. It seems like they were one local defeat away from general catastrophe. The battle of Inkerman, the French and the English after fighting against each other for centuries, are fighting together against the Russians, who later became the allies of the French and the English during the 1st and 2nd world war, which afterwards will still be enemies during the Cold War. This is a fantastic video! The visuals are exceptionally clear, and your re-enactments of key events are both illuminating, entertaining, and even humorous where appropriate. I have seen many of your "battle series" videos and I think this is among your finest ones yet-- all the pieces really come together to create something spectacular. It's been great seeing you improve at every aspect of your presentation skills as you've continued with your channel.
    You did a really good job of providing a sort of "narrative structure" to a hectic, evolving situation. I know how difficult it is to synchronize animations with the content of the video, especially since I imagine animating the movements of the troops involved considerable historical research, and potentially extrapolation from limited information when necessary. So I understand if my following idea isn't feasible, given all the amazing effort you've already put in, but...
    My one suggestion would be to include some sort of timer or clock (not real time of course!) to help the viewers keep track of when certain events are taking place, and in what order. Either by putting it in the corner throughout (where such information is available to you from your research), or potentially by interleaving in some title/cue cards with the times on them at particularly critical inflection points in the battle. Sometimes relating what happened can be faster or slower than the historical event itself, so this might be a relatively straightforward way to keep the viewer oriented in time as they follow along with your masterful descriptions of events. With a bit of artistic license in how the timer is displayed, this might also allow you to tell the story of the battle non-linearly ("meanwhile, on the left flank...") if needed to better suit the narrative you've crafted.
    Can't wait for part 4!

    • @britishmuzzleloaders
      @britishmuzzleloaders  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Stanley. That is a good idea, about the "clock". I'll see what I can do... even if it's a better reference to the "window" of time that things are taking place.

    Nicely done. I particularly enjoyed the manner in which you manage singlehanded to portray the entire British contingent, such as at 31:13, where - with a little help from the wonders of modern photography - you represent a dozen individual soldiers with no other support than your faithful mustache. You might at least have removed it for a few of the images, or at least added a beard to make it a bit less obvious.
    But I don't wish to denigrate a very fine effort. I must, however, take issue with your representation of the British artillery batteries as simply "RA". Surely you would realise that the Royal Horse Artillery has a very proud tradition as a distinct and elite arm of the British Army, second in seniority only to the Household Cavalry and taking precedence even to them when on parade with its guns. As my father told me, their motto was "The right of the line (ie place of honour), the pride of the British Army, and the terror of the whole wide world." As someone with three family members in the RHA, from a great grand uncle at Waterloo down to my own father in WW1, I cannot refrain from bringing this to your attention. In future amendments to this content I hope you do the right thing and identify them correctly as "RHA". It's only fit and proper.
    One further addition you might consider is a mention of Brig Gen Thomas Fox Strangways, a veteran of Leipzig and Waterloo and commander of the British artillery. On horseback at Inkerman in consultation with Lord Raglan, a Russian shell exploded among the group and took off his leg, and he died an hour later.

    • @britishmuzzleloaders
      @britishmuzzleloaders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was there any RHA at Inkerman?

    • @richardofoz2167
      @richardofoz2167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@britishmuzzleloaders There were certainly many RHA batteries in Crimea, and one of Roger Fenton's photos shows their camp. Also, Gen Strangways, chief of British Artillery and an old RHA officer, was killed at Inkerman. I'd be very surprised if there were no RHA at Inkerman, but I'm not certain. Doing more research to find out, and will get back to you.

    Does going from shooting black powder to smokeless require any adjustment in shooting method or aim? does it depend on range?

    I just picked up an 1837 Prussian (Danzig) Potsdam musket. With only a couple replacement parts, front barrel band and hammer, it'll be fully ready to go.

    Is it possible for you to access an Ishapore 2A/2A1? They have 12 round magazines, meaning you can start with 13 rounds, and then only need to put in a stripper clip something like 3-4 times to hit 30 rounds or even 35. A mad minute with it could be the best.

    Would you ever do a video on battles from the American Revolution? (British perspective, of course.) How about the Napoleonic Wars? I’m dying to see a video covering fighting from the square formation.

    This series is proof that the British had cloning technology mid 19th century.
    The British Army of the East deployed clone troopers en masse.
    Same face. Same mustache. Same posture. How is that even possible?
    Jokes aside. Excellent serie. Will you do the rest of the Crimean war to including the charge of the light brigade. I kniw your emohasis is on muzzle loading weapons.

      We saw it done at a re-enactment of a napoleonic battle in Europe. Polish cavalry were’nt allowed to take their horses across the border, so they came on to the battlefield mimicking being on horses. Everyone saw the funny side 😀 Now that’s how to make the most of a bad situation.

    Thank you for a thunderingly good account of the battle. Been waiting for this.
    PS I'd just make a small correction to assist with any future presentation that features Colonel Egerton.
    The G is pronounced as in Ginger, and so Egerton is pronounced Edgerton. It's sometimes spelt this way, but I'm not sure which one is the original.

    Excellent series, extremely informative and I loved the animated maps. BUT IT IS INCOMPLETE. The last episode available (Part four) ends after the struggle around the sandbag battery with no part five to tell us of the conclusion of the battle. Is part five coming or are we to be left hanging?

      Yes, I am aware that the series is incomplete. Thank you, 😀. I will eventually get around to finishing it.
