Mr. Baradwaj Rangan, are you narrating the story? if so it is so pathetic. Spadikam is not a story of a thug or a goon or a masala entertainer. It is a story of
1) a father who wanted to see his son as a great mathematician like him, torturing him to fulfil his vision
2) A son who wanted to be a scientist flee away due to extensive humiliation and torture from his father, and become a small town goon
3) a mother who couldn't take sides.
Actually, this happens in each and every family. Every parent want his son to be a doctor or IITian, never thinks about his taste, dream wish etc .. if their plans don't take off they start torturing
this movie is eternal because the plot is incredible

Feels like he didn't understand the movie.. The main part of it is the relationship.. Which he totally missed and not giving the respect to the cult status that the movie earned.. Disappointed...
I think he understood it quite well. Half the video he talks about the father-son conflict. You probably have listening comprehension issues.
I don't think there is any other character in malayalam cinema that had such mass appeal and depth at the same time

Thoovanathumbikal(1987), starring Mohanlal, Sumalatha and Parvathy would be a suggestion I would make. The female protagonist is a sex worker of the name Clara. A character that has had an everlasting place in the heart of all who have watched it.
He's judging the Malayalam industry from a Tamil viewpoint. I don't think he knows the Malayali audience well.
In nayakan the heroine was a sex worker

5:35 I don't understand why you conceived uruvashi's character as a cutie. She always loved him since childhood. But when Mohanlal's character broke trust in her father and left his house her father felt responsible and they flew as well. But when they returned and saw Mohanlal as a goon it really shook them. So Uruvashi's character was significant in bringing out human side of mohanlal as well as making his sister realise that her brother deserves respect which inturn results in Thilakan shouting at his own daughter on her wedding day and finally he loses everyone one by one. So Uruvashi's character is not a cutie. She is a Signficant character who brought a change in the story as she empathized with Thomas Chacko since childhood.
I don't know why everybody calling Spadikam a "mass" movie. It is not. Just because it has action in it, it is not a "mass" movie. Spadikam is not a typical "mass" movie. It is a classic! It became popular as it ages.

It's a really relateable character to a lot us mallu boys...
They did a worst remake in tamil as veeraappu and as vajram in telugu
Yeah the emotional turmoil that the protagonist goes through is what's usually missing in mass movies since a while. These days no matter how hard his past has been, the hero has everything figured out on the go and is always smarter than any antagonists. At the time of Spadikam, mass movies were not as mainstream in Malayalam. Devasuram (1993) narrates another such personal struggle of a feudal thug. Then I think Aram Thamburan (1997) is what made it mainstream and cool in Malayalam.
When Mohanlal played the all-knowing larger than life role in Aram Thamburan, powered by a vivid, witty and eloquent scripting by Ranjith and mass direction by Shaji Kailas, we get to see a protagonist, who's struggle has been more spiritual / mystical, but not revealing the exact details of what he's been through. That made his character unpredictable and to some extent his all-knowingness justified, at least to the villagers who're innocently fragile. This movies is really what shot Manju Warrier to fame. This movie also gave us a worthy villain who's brilliantly portrayed by Narendra Prasad.

Kireedam (Malayalam) is another - probably the defining - Mohanlal Thilakan combination.. it’s a shame Hotstar doesn’t have subs on it
You got it wrong sir. It's an intense emotional drama, mainly between a father and son. Father forcing his son to be a mathematician but ultimately he becomes a rogue. It's also a movie of realization. Realization for the father as well as the son. Action is adding some energy to the plot

A mathematician father who want his son to b same lyk him, he beat him since childhood and compare him with other students and made him a thug... Spadikm is a action movie but thr is emotion that made spadikam a classic..

While most of the 'mass' scenes mentioned here sound like threadbare, tasteless clichés, the way they are weaved into the narrative, be it for the dialogues or storytelling angles, is so refreshing even for today's standards! Another must-watch Mohanlal flick with the rawness of Spadikam is Thaazhvaaram, which is an Indian Spaghetti Western.
You are absolutely right. It's not only film industry all other sectors like government officials , politics etc has all major 3 religions in kerala that is y it's called gods own country.

I feel Bharadwaj missed the main content of the movie. It tells the story of a father and son relationship. How a father could spoil a son by forcing him to be what he never wants to be. And mother's confusion how to take the sides. Its not a story of a goon please. Dont spoil the movie by deviating from the content. Please watch it again. This theme still holds valid since it tells about parenting n stuff like that. Parents always want their kids to be docs engnrs scientists n all. I am afraid you dint get the essence of the movie.

I am a huge fan of BR and love all his reviews, but this one disappointed me. Its only Mohanlal's character that is talked about, but little is talked about Thilakan n nothing about KPAC Lalitha who equally excelled in making the movie a hit. Talking about the scenes, I felt BR usually brings out the best scenes of movies in his review, but the scene between Mohanlal and Ashokan when Mohanlal comes to Ashokan's house, Chippi giving back her wedding ornaments to Thilakan and scene between Mohanlal and Urvasi right after Chippi's wedding should have been mentioned I felt because they were excellent and full of punch! May be bcoz I am a mallu who has seen and byhearted this movie n number of times!
