- Robert Iler played Aj Soprano, son of Tony Soprano is the legendary HBO series The Sopranos. The shoe just celebrated its 25 year anniversary. In this conversation with Kristian Harloff, Robert discusses being cast on the show, growing up on set, the best times on the show. He talked about advice Tony Sirocco gave him during shooting the pilot. He opens up about his sobriety and the two times he messed up on the set. Kristian asked if he ever took a romantic shot at his co-star Jamie Lynn Sigler and they discuss their podcast “Not Today Pal.” This and more on this episode of The Big Thing.

First time watching this channel. I watch pretty much every Robert/Jamie interview and this was a great one! I love all the funny interviews too but I like this one for the more in depth information learned.

Yo Harloff, I've never seen Sopranos but it's been on my list for a long time now (mostly cause of you) and after this interview, I'm definitely gonna be checking it out sooner than later. This was great! This is another one of my favorite interviews you've ever done. I love how open Robert Iler was about his life and his time on The Sopranos. Seems like an awesome dude. Although, it's a bummer to hear that he doesn't watch his stuff. That's pretty common with a lot of actors, apparently. I've never understood that. I get that it can be a bit awkward to watch one's self, but don't you want to see your work? It kind of defeats the purpose of being an actor to an extent. Also, I still haven't even seen the Sopranos yet, but I'll get to it eventually.

As nearly an absolute rule people hate the teenagers in television series in reoccurring non lead roles in the modern era... but AJ and Meadow are so above and beyond all others on numerous fronts. First of all, all young kid actors tend to be bad, it's just a matter of degrees. AJ and Meadow were above that average degree when they were still young in the earlier seasons even though they weren't great (but none are), but at least Rob wasn't bad in the early seasons in an overracter type of way, which is difficult to watch when young kids overract. But from the 3rd season onward Rob was particularly good and by the final season when he a lot of scenes and time on the screen his acting was top tier. And I don't think AJ was ever a bad kid... he was a bit bratty and manipulative when it came to his parents, but he was a really humble/decent kid around his peers. He never pulled the, his dad is Tony Soprano card. He was a good kid and I theorize he would have been alright. Meadow as well.

And in reference to the host saying that his friend claims that Yellowstone is the closest they've been able to get to the Soprano's family dynamic. While I think that there have been shows that have pulled it off, but I'm sorry, Yellowstone is so painfully bad on every front. It's written at a highschool level. It's only a slight step up from Tommy Wiseau and like The Room there are elements to it that are so bad that it's hilarious... I like to keep a torrent of it as a reference to have a good laugh and/or show to a friend so we could have a good laugh at certain scenes. I wouldn't have gone out of my way to bash it here, but I can't believe that someone would have the balls or lack of insight to say something so ridiculous, which I realize the host is merely relaying what he's heard, but I'm here to say he's been given bad intel. I watched the first 4 episodes of that show and and the writing is soooo forced and bad, so I did a little research to see if others acknowledge the horrific early writing, thinking that maybe the show improves, but come to find out... no, that's the level that the show is written and remains at throughout, which was my cue be done with it. The only positive i could give is I enjoyed the visual element of wherever the shooting location was.. it's always nice when a shoot location is outside of Hollywood for something different.
