Phil Chan, What if we want to recode 2 or more categories into 1 categories? for example, I have a pop quiz, "Question 1, Question2 & Question 3" into 1 category, for example "Comprehension", how do I transform 3 items into 1 categories?, thank Phil
Hi, if one variable has 5 dimensions and each dimension have 3 questions then how to combine all this under one variable. Looking for your kind help. Thanks
Say I have a much larger data set, some 50,000+ observations. I've combined 3 likert scale variables that sum to equal the idea of "religiosity" (1 being the lowest possible score, 18 the highest). I'm interested in recoding and grouping individuals based off this new religiosity score. Is there a feature in SPSS that allows me to group individuals together to ensure each new group is as close to being equal as possible in terms of the amount of individuals in each group?
what are the principles for grouping? or it depends on researcher's choices Ex: i want to group the respondents into 3 categories : high, med, and low risk taking So, should i group them base on the frequency of the options that they chose in the questionnares 5 (always) --> high; 3, 4 ---> med ; 1, 2---> low Thanks.
+Dang Y Nguyen Yes, you could set the baseline group to the one most frequently occurring - this approach is commonly taught. Or, you could set the baseline group to the one that you wish to compare the others to.
Hi...I have been given data to use with SPSS and I want to convert the sex category (nominal) in to 2 categories at 0 and 1 (currently male is 1, female is 2 and several -'s for refused to answer etc) how do I do this?
err, how do you spss for questions like this? Yes No 4.1 Do you have control for savings? 1 0 4.2 Do you have control for income? 1 0 4.3 Do you have access to money for your own? 1 0 4.4 Do you have control for loans? 1 0 4.5 Do you have control for cash expense? 1 0 Range: 0-5 Score: 0= no control 1-2=low control 3-4=average control 5=high control

thx!
How do you split one variable e.g perceived stress into two variables e.g low and high?
what are the principles for grouping? or it depends on researcher's choices

This is covered in my video on data entry.
Thx a lot :D
+CaporalAlbinuta hi..........................
Does this video have sound? I am hearing nothing...
Hi Phil... ur website is not available? Anyway to contact u?
Hiya Dayanne. You can ask here? No promises of a reply.
err, how do you spss for questions like this?
Yes No
4.1 Do you have control for savings? 1 0
4.2 Do you have control for income? 1 0
4.3 Do you have access to money for your own? 1 0
4.4 Do you have control for loans? 1 0
4.5 Do you have control for cash expense? 1 0
Range: 0-5
Score:
0= no control
1-2=low control
3-4=average control
5=high control
Quesions 4.1-4.5 are just nominal. Create column for each response, so you'll have 5 columns.
create column for 1=yes and 0= no? then how do i do the range for my score? like the 0=no control, 1-2=low control.
you sound funny
Thank you so much
+hasanain ghaleb Good luck!
