Cal was Merrin's light when she needed him to be. It's Cal that helps her leave Dathomir and chart her own path; he helps her begin to let go of the anger and hatred and pain that's haunted her since the loss of the Nightsister Clan at the hands of General Grievous during the Clone Wars. In Survivor, she returns the favor. Cal has two big losses in this game, Cere and Cordova. Both Jedi Masters have helped shape Cal into the Jedi Knight he is and their abrupt and violent ends leave him reeling, full of pain and agony and rage for the man who killed them. The Jedi always preach that attachment is dangerous; that it will inevitably lead to the Dark Side. On the one hand, they were right. It's the loss of Cere, someone whose guidance Cal has counted on for the past 5 years, that causes him to tap into the darkness. But what they forget to acknowledge is that those same attachments can bring out the best and keep us centered. It's only because of Cal's attachment to Merrin and the bond they've forged through mutual loss that he's brought back from the edge. She is his anchor, always reminding him of the good, compassionate person he is. Merrin will always guide Cal back to the light, should he ever lose his way. "The Empire has taken enough from us! I won't lose you, too."
Cal & Merrin's relationship has come a long way since Jedi Fallen Order. Even the old Order is gone, having emotional attachments like love is not a bad thing. Nor it will lead you to the path to the Dark Side. How we handle it and gained support by friends, family & loved ones is what any Jedi could’ve done. Luke should take an example from Cal and Kanan since Mara Jade is hinted in Return of the Jedi and was mentioned in TLJ novelization.
Exactly, I also believe that attachments make us stronger, not weaker. The previous Jedi Order was also too dogmatic, arrogant, and too detached from others. Luke’s new Jedi Order in Star Wars Legends is a big improvement over the previous Order.
Merrin will help cal from going to the dark side... she mentioned that in the dialogue... maybe using the nightsiaters method which was mentioned in the fallen order..
