I've never done an "after clean up" of the frames once the bees have removed all the honey. I suppose I will have to do that this year after the harvest. Hi Mr.Ed! I have wax envy. My love of honeybees started with the wax. I'm a seamstress/crafter, 18th century re-enacter. A beeswax cube is a gift beyond measure. It was hard to come by 15-20 years ago. Now that I found the local beekeeping supplier & my local beekeepers, I'm in honey and wax Heaven. I live very near BetterBee. I love those folks. I have 10# of wax on hand almost always. I bought a mini mold and make tiny "sewing" bees. They sell like hotcakes at craft fairs etc. Cute things. It's hot and humid in upstate NY too. Always raining now. Loving the videos...keep 'em coming. God bless.🧡
I was watching a video the other day about the historical seamstress or tailor, I would never in a million years thought they would use beeswax to wax their threads but In hindsight it makes so much sense when you think about it! 😊 🐝
Wax or even tallow had all kinds of uses in the home and especially on sailing ships and all the rigging and ropes were heavily tallowed or coated with a mixture of tallow and wax, or even a mixture of wax and pitch to preserve the ropes etc, sails were sewn with waxed thread to help preserve the cotton thread. Outdoor clothing was sewn with waxed thread to help prevent water intrusion. Sails were rarely white in color, and ropes on ships were mostly black from these treatments.
The bee's wax, in my opinion, is every bit as valuable as the honey is, and in many ways even more valuable as without the wax, there would be no honey and just as honey is produced only at certain times, so is the wax. And in fact, wax is only produced by the bees when heavy nectar is coming into the hive AND ONLY by bees of certain age. I use wax thread for all my leather crafts, purses, wallets, jackets ,moccasins and MOJO bags. The bees supply everything , they are amazing little wonders. My very favorite insect.

Jeff that extension cord is not rated for the heavy duty motor. You need to buy a extension cord rated for 20 amps. This will save your motor/ control. God bless.

I must say I am a cow farmer and I love watching the cows let into a new field of grass and seeing the bees on clean up in your different production vidoes is on a par with that. just nature doing it things taking it course... (ok with a little help from us but we are in it together)

I was wondering, can you add a stainless steel mesh, like window screen material, to the inside of the drum to keep the finer particulates and cappings out of the final product? It wouldn't have to be made permanent, just an insert for the inside of the drum. The buckets of spun honey, do you add that honey back to the drums to free the buckets up? Great video! For me, it's just as easy to strain the honey through a filter after it comes out off the separator than to try and catch it before it gets into the extracted honey. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for watching. Until the next one, God's peace Susan. Mr. Ed

13:36 I could be wrong... but I believe that foam may be little oxygen bubbles that were produced when hydrogen peroxide decomposed. Hydrogen peroxide is a byproduct of the process the bees use to convert one type sugar to another...

I have your moms goofy son to remind me on a regular basis of her past adventures. My mom traveled all over the place with a niece and female nurse buddy but always had myself in the pack of her mind. I did some grading for a doctor that went to her local assembly and when told that he had met her son, her comment was 'NOW what'? I always tell folks I come from a long line of goofy people. Hello Jeff I was wondering if you could do a video about the history of the bees and the Abbey. How it all got started. Were the bees there before you, or did you bring the bees. Whose idea was it, that sort of thing. Also where do you see it going in the future and any plans or wants for new equipment. Lastly, any plans for who will take over your bee empire when the time comes.
When I do presentations at conferences, that is exactly what I talk about. Generally, the talk lasts about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. So, if you really are interested in hearing about it, attend one of the conferences I will be speaking at. Right now I'll be speaking in Slidell on Sept. 23 and 24. at 22:47 you got a nice clip of the inside of the drum spinning, am i crazy or did the knives were pointed with the sharp edge in the other direction? does it spin the other way around now, or did i understand the knife priciple wrong ?
It would appear that you are correct. I went back and looked and the edge is on the wrong side of the rotation. However, I may have switched the direction during the fix, but originally, the knives were positioned correctly. However, since I don't use the knifes, it's a mute point. What would happen if you heated the honey enough for the wax to melt on top and then let it cool? Wouldn't it be better for getting every bit of wax out?
You certainly cold do that and it would work. Unfortunately, wax won't melt until it reaches 145 degrees and honey starts losing it's active ingredients at about 114 degrees. I do not plant anything for our bees. Generally, between the nectar from the Chinese Tallow and the Privet, the bees procure enough of it to sustain themselves throughout the year as well as make enough surplus for me to harvest honey from them once a year. Those are the plywood sheets that I cut out the "prison shanks" from. Because they looked so cool, I had planned on hanging them on the wall. In case you don't know what the "prison shanks" are, it is the name given to a tool I use to help keep my supers separated while doing splits. Check out the video link below showing how I use them. The fuse blew for a reason, was the separator overloaded? Or perhaps there is an issue with the motor or a bearing causing overload. It would have been a simple job just to replace the fuse with a reset button, or a modern cut out switch.
The fuse did not blow, the case that held it and was attached to the circuit board, had one of the leads broken off. Because the lead was so short, he could not reattach the fuse casing and just hard wired the fuse. If it should blow later on, we will repair it properly. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
I'm not really sure if the foam under the wax is the same type of foam as when I heat the honey and the hydrogen peroxide is released, but it may be partially. That's a question I will have to look into. God's peace Ed. Mr. Ed
Hey! I'm actually wondering if the cappings that come off of your uncapper would work in a wax press? I want to use a chain uncapper but would prefer to use a wax press since it's just quicker for me while I'm extracting.
I always liked how a wax press works, and they work great for knife upcappers. Unfortunately, since my uncapper is a chain uncapper and it produces such fine cappings, it just was not the right fit for me. Our normal honey harvest is between 4,000 to 5,000 pounds. This year we got about 1,000 pounds. The late freeze we got in March knocked out our honey production. It wants a little cone in the middle - there's a patch where the cappings were too close to the centre to be spun out by the centrifuge. A cone over that spot would make sure all the cappings got spun out properly. Putting your arm inside a rotating machine to clear it is unconscionably dangerous! Otherwise a very good machine. I want one.
Though it may appear our bees give us an abundance of wax, after using it to wax our foundations with, 150 hives X 10= 1,500 frames, there is not that much left to do things with. However, the little that is left is given to Brother Austin in Monk Soap to make hand lotion bars with. Unfortunately, not enough to make candles with. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

The wax is a very important product the bees make and I highly prize it. After separating the honey from the wax, I then render it, a video I will soon post, and then use the cleaned wax and give it back to the bees to use in their hives. Nice video Mr.Ed I am honey processer from Ethiopia ,Africa. And looking for honey wax separator. I have some question 1.What is the size of the hole in the perforated basket through with the honey pass? 2.what is the horse power of the motor and its maximum speed? 3.if i dump a crused comb directly from my hives would this machine help me separate the honey from the wax? 4.what is the diameter and height of the tank ? thank you
Happy to answer your questions. 1. The hole size is 1/8 of an inch. 2. The size motor is 3/4 hp, pretty small, but it does the job. 3. If the comb was broken up enough to allow the honey to escape from the cell, I think it would work great. 4. I do not know the exact measurements, but it is about 3 foot wide and about 2 and a half feet deep. I hope this helps. The waxed honey doesn't look good, but ingesting small amounts of wax is harmless and might do some good. Unless you are diabetic and then care must be taken in eating honey, as it increases blood sugars. Personally I remove as much of the wax as I can then I keep this honey for creaming.
Ingesting wax is not a dangerous thing, but I still prefer not eating it and focus mainly on eating only the honey. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Though I would not recommend the practice to others, with over 20 years as a woodturner, I am very much aware of the dangers of placing a tool, or in this case a spatula, onto something that is spinning at 1750 RPMs. But you have to agree, the effects of doing so looked quite fascinating. Hi Mr.Ed! I have wax envy. My love of honeybees started with the wax. I'm a seamstress/crafter, 18th century re-enacter. A beeswax cube is a gift beyond measure. It was hard to come by 15-20 years ago. Now that I found the local beekeeping supplier & my local beekeepers, I'm in honey and wax Heaven. I live very near BetterBee. I love those folks. I have 10# of wax on hand almost always. I bought a mini mold and make tiny "sewing" bees. They sell like hotcakes at craft fairs etc. Cute things. It's hot and humid in upstate NY too. Always raining now. Loving the videos...keep 'em coming. God bless.🧡
I was watching a video the other day about the historical seamstress or tailor, I would never in a million years thought they would use beeswax to wax their threads but In hindsight it makes so much sense when you think about it! 😊 🐝
Wax or even tallow had all kinds of uses in the home and especially on sailing ships and all the rigging and ropes were heavily tallowed or coated with a mixture of tallow and wax, or even a mixture of wax and pitch to preserve the ropes etc, sails were sewn with waxed thread to help preserve the cotton thread. Outdoor clothing was sewn with waxed thread to help prevent water intrusion. Sails were rarely white in color, and ropes on ships were mostly black from these treatments.
Got to love Upstate NY.
The bee's wax, in my opinion, is every bit as valuable as the honey is, and in many ways even more valuable as without the wax, there would be no honey and just as honey is produced only at certain times, so is the wax. And in fact, wax is only produced by the bees when heavy nectar is coming into the hive AND ONLY by bees of certain age. I use wax thread for all my leather crafts, purses, wallets, jackets ,moccasins and MOJO bags. The bees supply everything , they are amazing little wonders. My very favorite insect.

I am constantly amazed at how many folk will have a crack at fixing their own electrics. I’ve always had a really healthy respect for the mysteries of electricity and engaged a registered electrician whenever needed. Stay safe Jeff.
Being an electronic technician/engineer, most of my employment years, I kind of cringed when I saw the fuse being replaced with a hard wired fuse. Good luck with that!
Since I know nothing about electricity, I let the professionals take care of it for me. Al is a retired electrical engineer, and Rene made his living on repairing circuit boards and motors, so it was handled by professionals. Jeff that extension cord is not rated for the heavy duty motor. You need to buy a extension cord rated for 20 amps. This will save your motor/ control.

I must say I am a cow farmer and I love watching the cows let into a new field of grass and seeing the bees on clean up in your different production vidoes is on a par with that. just nature doing it things taking it course... (ok with a little help from us but we are in it together)

I was wondering, can you add a stainless steel mesh, like window screen material, to the inside of the drum to keep the finer particulates and cappings out of the final product? It wouldn't have to be made permanent, just an insert for the inside of the drum.
The buckets of spun honey, do you add that honey back to the drums to free the buckets up?

Hello Jeff I was wondering if you could do a video about the history of the bees and the Abbey. How it all got started. Were the bees there before you, or did you bring the bees. Whose idea was it, that sort of thing. Also where do you see it going in the future and any plans or wants for new equipment. Lastly, any plans for who will take over your bee empire when the time comes.
When I do presentations at conferences, that is exactly what I talk about. Generally, the talk lasts about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. So, if you really are interested in hearing about it, attend one of the conferences I will be speaking at. Right now I'll be speaking in Slidell on Sept. 23 and 24. at 22:47 you got a nice clip of the inside of the drum spinning, am i crazy or did the knives were pointed with the sharp edge in the other direction? does it spin the other way around now, or did i understand the knife priciple wrong ?
It would appear that you are correct. I went back and looked and the edge is on the wrong side of the rotation. However, I may have switched the direction during the fix, but originally, the knives were positioned correctly. However, since I don't use the knifes, it's a mute point. How well do the bees clean the honey covered equipment? Is it still sticky afterwards?
They clean it spotlessly. It still is a bit sticky, but a quick wash down with cold water cleans that right up. What would happen if you heated the honey enough for the wax to melt on top and then let it cool? Wouldn't it be better for getting every bit of wax out?
You certainly cold do that and it would work. Unfortunately, wax won't melt until it reaches 145 degrees and honey starts losing it's active ingredients at about 114 degrees. At that point the honey becomes pasteurized, and I'm not interested in that. Thanks for watching and offering your suggestion. God's peace Luis.

I do not plant anything for our bees. Generally, between the nectar from the Chinese Tallow and the Privet, the bees procure enough of it to sustain themselves throughout the year as well as make enough surplus for me to harvest honey from them once a year. Those are the plywood sheets that I cut out the "prison shanks" from. Because they looked so cool, I had planned on hanging them on the wall. In case you don't know what the "prison shanks" are, it is the name given to a tool I use to help keep my supers separated while doing splits. Check out the video link below showing how I use them. The fuse blew for a reason, was the separator overloaded? Or perhaps there is an issue with the motor or a bearing causing overload. It would have been a simple job just to replace the fuse with a reset button, or a modern cut out switch.
The fuse did not blow, the case that held it and was attached to the circuit board, had one of the leads broken off. Because the lead was so short, he could not reattach the fuse casing and just hard wired the fuse. If it should blow later on, we will repair it properly. God's peace brother.

I'm not really sure if the foam under the wax is the same type of foam as when I heat the honey and the hydrogen peroxide is released, but it may be partially. That's a question I will have to look into. God's peace Ed.

Hey! I'm actually wondering if the cappings that come off of your uncapper would work in a wax press? I want to use a chain uncapper but would prefer to use a wax press since it's just quicker for me while I'm extracting.
I always liked how a wax press works, and they work great for knife upcappers. Unfortunately, since my uncapper is a chain uncapper and it produces such fine cappings, it just was not the right fit for me. Jeff, how many pounds of honey total do you generally get each year?
Our normal honey harvest is between 4,000 to 5,000 pounds. This year we got about 1,000 pounds. The late freeze we got in March knocked out our honey production. It wants a little cone in the middle - there's a patch where the cappings were too close to the centre to be spun out by the centrifuge. A cone over that spot would make sure all the cappings got spun out properly. Putting your arm inside a rotating machine to clear it is unconscionably dangerous!
Otherwise a very good machine. I want one.
Messy having to scrape off the capping but personally I think it helps keep the honey sealed better.
28:48 I see some beekeepers making candles from bee wax, why don't you do that considering the large amount of volume you get each time?
Though it may appear our bees give us an abundance of wax, after using it to wax our foundations with, 150 hives X 10= 1,500 frames, there is not that much left to do things with. However, the little that is left is given to Brother Austin in Monk Soap to make hand lotion bars with. Unfortunately, not enough to make candles with. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

The wax is a very important product the bees make and I highly prize it. After separating the honey from the wax, I then render it, a video I will soon post, and then use the cleaned wax and give it back to the bees to use in their hives. I am honey processer from Ethiopia ,Africa. And looking for honey wax separator. I have some question
1.What is the size of the hole in the perforated basket through with the honey pass?
2.what is the horse power of the motor and its maximum speed?
3.if i dump a crused comb directly from my hives would this machine help me separate the honey from the wax?
4.what is the diameter and height of the tank ?

Happy to answer your questions.
1. The hole size is 1/8 of an inch.
2. The size motor is 3/4 hp, pretty small, but it does the job.
3. If the comb was broken up enough to allow the honey to escape from the cell, I think it would work great.
4. I do not know the exact measurements, but it is about 3 foot wide and about 2 and a half feet deep.

What is the speed (rpm) you set the machine to separate the capping from the honey?
The waxed honey doesn't look good, but ingesting small amounts of wax is harmless and might do some good. Unless you are diabetic and then care must be taken in eating honey, as it increases blood sugars. Personally I remove as much of the wax as I can then I keep this honey for creaming.
Ingesting wax is not a dangerous thing, but I still prefer not eating it and focus mainly on eating only the honey. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

We did the same thing when we were growing up, that's probably why I lick all the honey from my tools...no point in just washing it down the drain. How is it that the wax doesn’t get thrown through all those holes in the drum….seems it would….
A very small amount does, but once the wax begins to build up on the basket, that captures the rest of the wax. Which Mass do the priests celebrate there at the Abbey?

I'm sure the foam is a product of the decomposing of the Hydrogen peroxide, but the honey still retains its ability to stop bacteria growth. Thanks for watching. God's peace Phillip.

Why didn't you just filter out the wax with a sieve in the first place?
That would work, but for me, it's to slow of a process, and it would not get the wax as dry compared to spinning it. God's peace.

As valuable as the wax is and as hard as it was to have the bees produce it, there is no way it would be disposed of. Reaching inside a rotating drum? You're going to get the Abbey an OSHAA violation.
Though I would not recommend the practice to others, with over 20 years as a woodturner, I am very much aware of the dangers of placing a tool, or in this case a spatula, onto something that is spinning at 1750 RPMs. But you have to agree, the effects of doing so looked quite fascinating.
