My girlfriend is dealing with depression and anxiety, she also has Asperger's, her whole life has been a struggle. Tonight was particularly difficult for her. I thought of this song and while listening to it I wrote her a letter to tell her how much I love her and that I support her, and how much I wish I could take away all of her pain and anxiety away, the weight that is holding her down. Her name is Annie. I've always loved this song and I can get emotional sometimes, but this time the song really opened the floodgates.
A perfect song, perfectly put together. So beautiful. Somehow it feels truly American to me. Kind of gospel. Kind of country. Kind of rock. Very poetic and emotional. One of my all time favorites. One of those songs that runs deep through your veins down into the soul. Sends nice little shivers through me.
Another start of a new year [2017 ]and The Band still sounding great. i hope all that gets to listen to this gets to take a load off and have a great year
YES ! ! ! The music of the late Levon Helm never ceases to move me. Musicianship was his God-given gift. RIP, Levon, you left us way too soon! And, RIP to the late, great Roebuck "Pops" Staples, the patriarch of the Staple Singers. Mavis Staples gave Marty Stuart one of Pops' guitars after Pops died, and Marty plays it from time to time, always very respectfully.
RJ Spitz I think that it is hard to imagine all that has happened since 1968 when this song was made. Hell this was before Woodstock happened and six years before I was born. Nothing but death and taxes last forever I believe. Good tunes and times come and go but as long as we remember and try to take the right path we can keep a clear conscience.
Nothin ever stays like it was. Everything is transitional. Great art is born of flux. It has to be that way. Cherish it. And be glad we have the technology to travel back.
RJ "Why couldnt music stay like this?" Hard act to follow brother. Who could match this great era, with all these great artists? I loved Leon, and was damned crushed when the Lord called him home. The Lord can be selfish like at at times! Jack Canada
im a late 80's make and model and never get sick of listening to this timeless piece! imagine hearing this for the first time back in the 60s! would of been like time travelling!
Don't want no sorrow For this old orphan boy I don't want no crying Only tears of joy I'm gonna see my mother Gonna see my father And I'll be bound for glory In the morning When I go away - Levon Helm
This is from The Last Waltz which was The Band's farewell show. It WAS the last time for the 5 original members since future The Band incantations lacked Robbie Robertson. Since only Robbie and Garth (who only played organ, albeit nonpariel) are still alive...
Came Here to Watch three Angels in their Prime. Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Levon Helm. Good Night Sweet Princes, you've brought so much joy to all of us. RIP.
This was posted a few months before my life changed completely....and the greatest weight I have ever endured, the death of my 19 year old son, was placed squarely upon my shoulders. The Weight. Indeed.
So sorry for your loss. It breaks my heart when I hear a parent has lost their child. I too have been listening to this song nonstop for the past 5 months as I've lost my 31 yr old to complications from Sickle cell anemia (1-9-16) My life will never be the same but this song helps me sort of get through the day. May both our son's rest in eternal peace! :/
"It was the sound of the lusty wildcat, the stern Southern preacher, the depleted Confederate soldier, the dirt farmer at the end of his day" ---Well stated, my man. Very well stated.
Just WOW! Haven't heard song in ages and was humming it which lead to listening to this. What a great surprise seeing Staple Singers. Perfection. I would've never put the two together. Alchemy
When music was great live ... No fluff no puff just deep wellspring of talent ... I was there when it played first in Titusville gee man what happened 🙄
I wish i could sing like Levon, I would go to a casting show, plaz that song there, and when everzbody applaudes i would leave the room and never come back.
Can never be thanked enough so I'll most appreciatively add my thanks to these fine young men and of course to the Staples for all their great gifts they shared with us. Your music has filled my soul. THANK YOU!
I was at the Cheek to Cheek Lounge, Orlando for the early show, The Band played 2 shows there that night. After the second show that night, Richard made a bad decision. I clearly remember Manual drinking a beer while playing the piano. For the next 2 weeks I couldn't think of much else as I couldn't understand why a guy would do something like that. What a great show in a small nightclub. Unbelieveable to see The Band in a place like that, thank you
Yeslets before today's muzak with a single click of a sample off a keyboard passes for talent...love this song every generation has good and bad...todays music gets old fast 😎

So privileged to have lived through this time in history and to have witnessed some of the greatest music ever recorded.

This is when music had soul. When music made you feel something. Something real that made you feel like they were singing this song just for you.
When u need to unwind and de-stress, this song is perfect for doing so.

In theses days of turmoil it sure is nice to be able to come listen to good music and take a load off
I Saw the last waltz on HBO back in the early 80s and became a lifelong Levon Helm fan .

Levon's found a place to rest his head. We are all richer for having had him here on earth. Thank you for your music, Mr. Helm - rest in peace.

Mere words are inadequate to describe the feeling.

Mavis described it at the end of the song. She whispers: "Perfect".

The first "rock" band to appear on the cover of Time Magazine- and for all the right reasons-this is one of those few timeless songs from their era.
Just WOW!
