I think , there was a huge error in the script of this episode ... you can mark it when Mark " the child " created his second persona " Steven" , then his mom entered the room inorder to punish who ... Steven or Mark ? so it would be believable if she punished Mark ... but , the scene left us with Steven , and here Steven won't know anything about what happened to Mark ... but , unfortunatly , the episode showed us that she beated Steven ... how couldn't he remember anything about that ? I get little bit confused .... also ... later on Steven described himself as a stress ball ...that Mark created .. what do you think ?
The room Dr. Harrow is in actually looks a lot like the storage room from episode two. When Steven and Layla are running from the Jackel and he can't summon the suit, he says that he is going to die in an old mans mummy chamber. That's what it reminded me of the most since Harrow always appears in that room.
I've seen good and great acting in Marvel movies & shows, but this episode is Emmy worthy, Oscar Isaac shows the depths of his talent. Very heartfelt episode, can't wait to watch it all unravel.
@@419HLR he is actually. It would have no production value if he was doing it alone. And would take forever to shoot the shot. More than likely it’s a stand in that he’s talking to. However he is an extremely great actor. I’d say one of the best. His believability is so good!
This episode is so deep and psychological but most of all it felt real and a full on character study and it didn’t shy away from showing the dark side of reality and i respect the hell out of Marvel for that, it is by far my favorite episode of any of the Disney+ shows hats off to Oscar Isaac as he did an oscar worthy performance this episode.
Oscar Isaac deserves the same recognition that Elizabeth Olsen received for WandaVision. This is some of the best acting in any Marvel property. He's incredible.
You can also see when Steven is talking to his mom. It’s not a call it’s a calendar on his phone. That he’s not talking to anyone. That broke my heart a bit. We all go through trauma yet it’s how we deal with it that defines us. This show is so well written it truly is. And @screencrush you truly blow me away with how much you know about all of this. I’d be interested in how you do. Those that help or anything else. Cheers!!
I like how they actually show how people get this disorder from actual trauma that forces your brain to disassociate through another personality to cope. SUCH A GOOD EPISODE!!🤯
Especially since I’ve seen a lot of young kids and teenagers on social wishing they had DID. DID is such a sad mental health disorder bc of where it stems from.
Marc told Steven that Steven avoids his mother's punishments, but he tells him this right after Marc became Steven and then his mother came into the room to beat him. Hmm. So, just prior to her beating him, he was Steven. I think Steven then immediately created Jake just before his mother started beating him so Steven wouldn't feel his mother's wrath which is what Marc intended. This would also explain why Jake is the most violent personality as HE was the one who took his mother's physical beatings.
I think Jake was created when Marc retreated into Steven - but then the beatings started, so Jake was created to take the worst of it to spare Marc and Steven from the trauma. Jake probably takes over in the absolute worst or most stressful moments, and is not remembered intentionally because Jake still wants to spare them from the worst. This also explains why Jake was the identity in charge of ending the relationship with Layla.
@@echris10sen they scaled because there was now two hearts on the boat for Marc and Jake. Before there was 3 souls but 2 hearts on the scale. My guess is that Jake will be in that field next episode.
The way Marc tried to protect Steven it’s like the way he wishes he could have protected his real little brother everything in the way Marc has done things in London and reliving the flashbacks is to protect Steven’s “innocence” of his personality. Jake is protecting them both and does the hard and stressful things like the really horrific violence, and taking the abuse but also protecting them when they break up with Layla and when Steven doesn’t have the confidence to ask out Dillon the museum girl. He’s always there under the surface ready to break through and protect his little brothers.
I actually weeped through this episode. It was so good and so emotional. I hope we get to see Steven again, I really like him. This is definitely my favourite Marvel show.
I really thought that Jake was gonna burst through the door to the ship at the end of the episode and beat off the sand people and save them both and we were gonna have another hard cut to black. I was completely floored by Steven falling off the ship.
Same i was expecting him to help them and completely destroy those sand people and Steven and Marc would be just shocked and the scales would get balanced
For anyone who was wondering, shiva is a seven day mourning period that one must observe after the passing of an immediate family member (mother, father, sibling, spouse) for Jews.
Yeah, there's a great movie about sitting Shiva with Tina fey, Adam Driver, Corey Stoll and Jane Fonda etc, Jason Bateman too. Good stuff It's called "this is where I leave you"
I just realized something rewatching all the episodes. Each personality has been associated with a color, Marc with white, Steven with blue, and Jake with red. In every scene with these different personalities, one of the colors sticks out either through a piece of clothing or a prop. e.g: steven's sarcophagus is blue, jakes sarcophagus is red. To go even deeper, there are also loads of scenes where we see blue and white mix together like the checkered shirt but we can always see a red item in close proximity implying Jake is there but hasn't been embraced by the others. It's a wild theory but seems to be holding up.
I think this episode completely made it clear to me that I'm loving this show exclusively because of the superb acting by Oscar Isaac. Every single episode has been a complete acting masterclass, and this one simply blew it out of the park
This episode really made me understood moon knight, it explained his origins, which was something I needed to know since I knew nothing about the character.
@@LegoReader12345hello Me too. Other than knowing that there was a character called Moon Knight, I didn't know anything about him. This episode was a fantastic introduction, and an incredible character study about Marc Specter.
I loved the ear twitching of Tawaret. It was animated perfection. Also who want to see a comedy show with her and an avatar helping people with love and stuff. Like some happy show where there everything is not death and destruction of the world.
Not sure if it's an Easter Egg or not, but I did love the scene where Steven realized that if Mark knew how to trounce bad guys, so did he - like muscle memory.
I think as Marc creates Steven, Steven creates Jake. In Egypt, Steven dissociated into Jake then defaulted back to Marc. Jake became all the things Marc’s mother accused him of being - mean, cruel, a killer, etc.
Me too. It may be a long shot, but I still believe Mark dissociated into Jake/Scotty and executed those hostages (including Layla’s dad). That’s why Marc is so protective of Steven from seeing the actual beating that took place with his mother and why Steven doesn’t remember that moment at all. Steven (who was creates to have fond memories of his mother) wouldn’t be able to handle that, so Jake/Scotty was created to handle the brutality (both watching and doing it). And how every time mention of that third alter comes up (the kills on the rooftop, the third sarcophagus, constantly being called Scotty), Marc (and by extension Steven) choose not to go near it. Because it would be truly acknowledging and reliving that brutality again. Granted, this is just my theory 🤷🏽♂️
@@immanuela209 I think that’s plausible. Otherwise, the abuse scene would not make narrative sense - Steven taking a beating and only having fond memories of Marc’s/his mother. All good points 👍 I do hope to see a reverse shot of Jake/Scotty in that cab watching them in the street outside Marc’s parents’ house.
Also, the reason sometimes it seems Marc and jake are both speaking is bc in did there’s something called “co-con”. Basically 2 alters concious at the same time
Also interesting to note that Harrow told his assistant to call “Mrs. Grant” right before Steven’s realization. There is no Mrs. Grant, only Mrs. Spector
@@leungyohana7760 got it all wrong, He was showing him she’s not real, she’s dead, because Steven grant is Marc Spector. There is not Mrs. grant. That’s right after he screams when his mother breaks in, he never truly sees what happens to her because Jake comes into Marc to take the beating. Hence why he’s a violent Madman.
@JxmiJack bro you literally can’t read, literally. I know that already . I literally said harrow did this to show him “Mrs.Grant” does not exist. The other guy was wrong because it wasn’t a way to show a “type of respect”. It was to show that a Mrs.Grant doesn’t exist. Hilarious how your so illiterate.
I think The Scales never fully balanced until Steven fell overboard because they were judging 3 souls with only Two Hearts, if they had let Jake out then the Scales would have been balanced by the time they reached the gates.
JAKE LOCKLEY!! That was definitely him when he came too with the broken nose, listen to the NY accent on his voice. When Harrow mentions that Marc was talking about his mother/brother, you can see the transformation. He instantly gets hostile, loses the accent, and now Marc is back. The transformations to Jake have been SO subtle, its like blink and you miss it.
I love Taweret saying “ a psych ward IS a first for me” 😂 just one of a few times she makes me laugh! Along with when she says something like “them’s the rules on my boat” 😅
The asylum being the boat going to the field of reeths explains why the lights are swaying in the hallway of the asylum at the end of episode 4... that's crazy that it was foreshadowed so well
I also noticed something funny about the hallway scene -- when Taweret was speaking to Marc and Steven, in the corner mirror we can only see the reflection of Taweret and Steven. Marc's reflection wasn't there. Damn, I couldn't figure out whether that's a mistake in special effect or a hidden message. Like foreshadowing Steven's eventual death and Marc's return to the living world?
It also connects to the brain being a Pendulum between sensical and non-sensical that Harlow mentions, to the scale measuring the hearts and Harlow’s tattoo.
I really liked this one. Taweret was a great character, and the voice acting was on point with her actress. Marc and Stephen going through the asylum was great thriller territory and then the gut punch with his brother. And seeing Stephen step up and save Marc on the boat was great, if a bit sad. I hope Jake gets some good on screen moments too
I feel like Steven never actually saw their mother, and that Jake took the beatings, which makes Steven happy and innocence and Jake mad and heavily aggressive
No, Marc probably took over while jake was co con. Or maybe jake developed in later stages. Marc was a comfort alter. An introject. Marc is a host or memory holder. Jake is probably the protector.
Jake was someone who would be assumed as ruthless and cold but I think he's the protector. He is tough to take the beatings and do the worser things, ruthlessness was just something he had to act but not as his true self.
This show is trippy....with that Disney budget man that ship scene looked incredible. I thought I would be craving severance until season 2 but this has weirdly satisfied that fractured mind/memory stuff
Try legion if you haven’t already. Goes over similar subject matter Also true detective, west world, servant, and mindhunter can help shield the pain of a top shelf show like serverance
Well if we look at it 7 gates at this point it’s 7 important memories . Gate 1: brother drowning . Gate 2:funeral scene for brother Gate 3: birthday 1 Gate 4 :birthday 2 Gate 5 :walking away from dad Gate 6: moon knight Final gate : they go back to the room where Steven is born . So in essence they did go into 7 memory gates
Well so far jake existence isn’t known to Marc or Steven plus the scales tried to balance only two hearts not three for jake . Marc feels guilty for creating Steven , Marc felt guilty for the death of the brother and had previous trauma he hadn’t fully accepted and tried to move on from . On the other hand Steven refused to believe he was the second personality he wasn’t ready to accept the truth . I believe these reasons are why the scales didn’t balance . And until Steven seen the truth and accepted he was the second personality . Marc also was able to accept it wasn’t his fault the cause of his brothers death causing the balance of the scales .
Honestly it was really cool to see Taweret speak on the Ancestral Plane and how she feels about it in this episode. Gives me hope for what they plan to do with the second installment of Black Panther
Ryan, thank you for the self awareness of dispelling the incorrect terminology. While I don't have DID myself (I am diagnosed with other mental struggles) I appreciate you self correcting and helping to set the awareness and record strait. Much appreciation and love. I agree this is a great platform to educate while entertaining. They could have crashed and burned with this very sensitive topic but handled it accurately and with respect. So kudos to them for not turning mental illness into a punch line but a serious topic. That said I love your MCU videos and breakdowns. Keep up the amazing work.
yes and most shots he's been waist up or whatever apart from that mirror shot last episode where you see his sandals and trousers he wears as arthur. then they had one aerial view this episode where he was wearing the sandals too (when he was getting the water) but then it goes back to waist up
Also, think we can actually draw the conclusion that the drinking scenes we've seen so far have definitely been him. There is a moment when he's on the street where you can tell it's not the normal Marc persona, and again, I think the Jake transformations have been very subtle, but right in our faces. This show is AMAZING.
I noticed one other small Easter egg you missed on the Tomb Buster movie poster. The poster says the movie was made by Timely Atlas Studios. "Timely" and "Atlas" were both previous names for Marvel Comics before it became known as Marvel. It even has a globe logo, which is similar to the logo that was used by Atlas.
One of the "memory doors" in the asylum had a QR code on the number plate next to the door. Scanning the code takes you to a marvel website where they're giving away a free copy of a MoonKnight comic.
I like the take that "Jake" got the cut on his face from the punch after Steven kissed Layla. Jake would do anything to protect Marlene and Datrice in the comics. So much so that he never even told Marc that he had a daughter. In the show his only love/hope is Layla. She is the reason he can cope with his insane, dark actions. So, he could have been jealous of Steven stealing a kiss. Marc even talks about the kiss later when he didn't need to because a punch said it all.
Ryan; as a Director of Children's Services whose Programs focus on the well being of children via reducing childhood trauma, I APPLAUD your thoughtful & thought filled episode breakdown.
@@SoniaRossIntuitiveMessenger Hello Sonia (lovely name)! I've been a Marvel gal since my childhood in the 70s. It was X-men for me as I was the "other" in the town we lived in. Life moved on but my love of Marvel comics never left me. I still collect X-men comics! I was drawn to Moon Knights character several years back as DID IS a possible outcome for severe and/or consistent childhood trauma. We now know through amazing multidisciplinary Teams that childhood trauma, if left untreated/unaddressed, can change EVERY cell in a child's body and not for the better. Please see the Kaiser Foundation A.C.E.S study for some incredible research. It's hard on the heart, BUT there's hope. We can be the hope... together! Kudos to Marvel for this Moon Knight episode and Ryan for his excellent breakdown. Blissings, Maria
@@SensoriaMaRiathank you. ☺️ Oh yes I am familiar with the A.C.E. I am trained in trauma as a psychotherapist so I was really appreciative of how they handled trauma and the childhood origins for this character. My heart really broke for this character because of the wonderful portrayal by Oscar Issac. I never dived deep into the comics but was introduced to the x-men through the animated series in the 90s. I definitely want to explore more comics after watching this series and the other Disney plus series.
I’m stuck on the idea that Mark always, somehow pulls Steven out before either can feel their Mother’s ACTUAL abuse, as he did in this Episode…granting them both Asylum. That leads us to the third personality, who’s had to endure some of the harshest trauma. An identity who feels such rage from being locked away, feeling perhaps alone and abandoned he’s become a berserker of sorts. And Im thinking Konshu knows he exists and is a fan of him…a fan of Jake. This episode really skyrocketed my appreciation for this Series. Oscar Isaac is just so damn good, as is the writing and everyone else. Ending is a farce pipe dream because the bad guys have no clue about Jake, and think getting rid of one soul is enough…?
I get into arguments with people on social media all the time when I suggest it's insanity that Marvel movies are never considered for top Oscar noms. The level of writing and the acting performance from Oscar Isaac here is similar to some of the performances of other actors throughout the MCU film history. No Way Home not getting a best picture nod despite being equally or higher critically and audience reviewed as the other films is just asinine. People who don't watch these films have this unfounded opinion that superhero films these days are basically the equivalent to the Doom movie starring The Rock and have little to no value from a writing or performance position. These MCU Disney+ shows consistently and regularly tackle difficult social issues and showcase incredibly character growth and storytelling... you know... the same sort of content that films nominated for Best Picture Oscars have in their scripts....
You mentioned that Harrow's office is modeled after the tomb of Alexander the Great, but I actually think it might be the "evil magician's man cave" from episode 2. The brick walls, pipes/columns, and even the arches on the opposite sides of the room and the large window are all exactly alike! I think it has the significance of Layla trying to convince him that his name is Marc and that he can fight, almost like how Harrow is trying to convince him that this has all been in his head.
New Rockstars with Eric Voss, MT, Jessica Clemons and the rest of the gang are great too. They have Inside Marvel, the Big Question, and Rogue Therory. All great shows. Of course, I love Screencrush Too.
The only thing is that Steven is real, and they aren’t two souls in one body, they’re one soul (one psyche) broken into multiple parts. Marc isn’t actually complete without Steven. I’m really looking forward to seeing how they resolve all this in a single episode. I’ve loved every second of this show, so sad there’s only one episode to go.
Wanda with 9, still felt rushed, Hawkeye felt hella rushed, this will also be rushed. Get out of the Asylum, release Jake, reincorporate, stop Harrow, save the world… that’s ALOT to do in 40 min. And, it’s most likely gonna end in a CG avatar battle… but hey, home run acting on all parts.
@@Madeoftea So far for me Loki has been the only Marvel show that wasn't just rushed to try and tie a bow on everything, but they already knew there was going to be a season 2.
Honestly, this the only channel that gives interesting artist and psychological criticism I watch for this Marvel, etc. Most just focus on Easter eggs, which is nice. But I appreciate the input on the real thought provoking stuff
As he was raised in a religious Jewish home, Mark Spector (=specter, a ghost?) would have known about the important tradition of the mikveh, a ritual purification in which one is totally immersed in water that must be connected to a natural source like a spring, and which is used to wash away ritual uncleanliness. It can look very much like the water he falls into when he is shot. It is also interesting that Episode 4 happened this year during Passover, which is a celebration of liberation from Egypt, a defining moment of Jewish identity and involves God passing judgment on the Egyptians…not to mention Moses, who had a dual Jewish/Egyptian identity…
WandaVision ep5: Wanda takes a trip down memory lane Loki ep5: Loki meets his variants Hawkeye ep5: Clint becomes Ronin MK ep5: Marc takes a trip down memory lane...but its fucking heart-wrenching TFATWS ep5: *b o a t*
Well actually on the fifth episode of falcon and the winter soldier, Sam realized that he was meant to be captain America just as Steve told him to. That’s why he accepted the role by training with the shield and obtains the suit.
Foreshadow Easter Egg: In the credits there has been a foreshadow for Marc/Steve confronting their repressed memories. The credits feature a number of flights of stairs, just like the multiple flights Steven climbs to relive his childhood.
24:49 it's actually a 7th Day Adventist hymn from the 1950s by a pastor named Emiliano Ponce Sedano. Manuel (and later on Joan Sebastian) have famously covered the song.
Could it be, the reason we haven’t seen Jake is that he hasn’t fully formed yet? If he had the scales wouldn’t have balanced with out confrontation with Jake. Maybe he will come to the surface at the end?
The way i understand it, original gus starved while he was going on that mission as moon knight. Then he tried to find another fish to hide his double life from Steven. But since Steven uncontiously knew that wasnt the same fish he saw it with two fins
I think we have seen Jake multiple times already. So far, I think we have only seen the character drink in non verbal scenes (from the flask). I think that is Jake, getting ready to get closure about his mother. That is until Marc forces his way out because he cannot handle going in, and starts walking away. Just the trauma of recognizing his mother's passing forced Steven out in short succession after (which is basically the only alter that can be blissfully ignorant to what's going on).
Marc love for Stephen is what balance his soul. His break down over his mom is what made Marc lose control and Stephen to blend back in after years of control! This could be a test from Khonshu to get his mind together and Khonshu will take care of the body🤔
If Stephen comes back, is his avatar persona Mr. Knight gonna be a total badass now that he knows the truth? And was that Jake in the office with the broken nose?
And I believe it was Jake in the office with the busted nose. He mentioned that Harrow wasn't a doctor a couple of times and the 2nd time most definitely had a different accent to it. Almost like a Jersey finish to it or something.
Hey Ryan, just wanted to say I really appreciate your breakdowns- definitely one of the most consistent and detailed around and I love not only the knowledge, passion and humour alongside the banter you have with Heavy Spoilers....but that said....we really need a Doug video special. Would love to see him present a video on the pets in the MCU or something
The song that comes out at the end when Steven dies is a Christian song in Spanish called "Más allá del Sol" It alludes to the Christian belief in an eternal life of peace after death, something that fits perfectly with this series knowing that the Egyptians believed in a life after death even long before the Christians. It shows how well they studied the Egyptian culture and religion to make this series. I can bet that it was Oscar Isaac himself who recomended the song knowing that he comes from a Christian family.
Honestly couldn’t believe my ears when the end credits played I cried. For those who don’t know Spanish it’s a beautiful song that is tradition to sing at a Spanish Christian’s Funeral that says “Far Beyond the Sun, up there is my home, my home blessed home, Far beyond the Sun”
Actually Old Testament Jews were the first to believe in paradise. Old Testament jews are of the same God as the Christian’s in the New Testament. Old Testament Jews look to Jesus, New Testament Christian’s look back to Jesus.
@@jawawi8489 why the fuck are you saying Jews look to Jesus? We don’t have anything to do with Jesus. We’re not even sure he existed. Also, “Old Testament Jews”?? Really? We have never stopped existing. Get your antisemitism out of here.
I also noticed that during that scary elevator scene. When Steven first sees Khonshu. The elevator doors open up at floor 3. That's how I knew there were def 2 other alters in him.
your videos make this show so much more amazing. it is astonishing the care that they put into the minute details and the fact that you can research these in so little time (i actually don't know if you get the episodes early or something but it's unfathomable even with that). it makes me appreciate little nods and respect the filmmaking so much. marvel has massively upped their game with the disney plus shows
Okay, here's the thing: "See you later, alligator; after while, crocodile" is an old saying that these sort of Easter egg videos seem to read WAY too much into. The phrase is even in a song (from the 50s, I think)
@@immanuela209 It's completely understandable, but I'm inclined to chalk it up to pareidolia (tendency to see patterns regardless of whether they're actually there)
@@internetgangstersprw Like I said, I understand the reasoning, but I also see the potential problems; mention Mephisto or Ralph Bohner to the channel creators for a demonstration...
This all reminds me of that Dumbledore quote, “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
this whole episode the amount of Taxi Cabs in the Background especially when Marc breaks down in the street the Taxi wandering is basically Jake spectating
Do you think that Jake came out or was a result of his mother’s beating bc Steven was out when his mom brought out the belt yet doesn’t remember his mom hating him or beating him as far as we know
@@dianvarughese3556 marc has all the memories. He knows his mom beats him. He and jake were probably both active or you could say, in the front seat at the same time. It’s a real thing in DID called “co consciousness”
@@dianvarughese3556 but yes ur right. He’s most definitely the protector. I’m studying for a physiology degree, so that’s my “certificate of authenticity” on all this lol. Here’s my opinion on their roles in the system. Marc: host, memory holder Steven: introject (of roro, marcs brother and Steven grant from the movie he watched.) or (I think) healer? (I’m not too sure, might have to check.) Jake: protector, perhaps a prosecutor bc if jake was the one about to harm himself in the beginning, that makes him a prosecutor. An alter that harms the system and or sometimes sides with the abuser. Again, might have to check. Hope this was useful
Honestly, DID is treated not by eliminating a personality but by integrating the personality into one person … this is Jake, who will have all the violence and all the knowledge
Some Jewish things you missed: Shiva and the Kippa When sitting Shiva, it is tradition to cover mirrors in order to concentrate on one’s inner self and not your outward appearance. Reflections have been incredibly important in Moon Knight, so the meaning of the mirrors being covered is significant. I want to also bring up the scene where Mark throws his Kippa (Kee-pah) or Yamurlke (Yaw-mah-kah) to the ground, then picks it back up and puts it to his heart. Firstly, men where Kippot (Kee-poh-t, plural of kippa) as a reverence of God, and as a reminder that God is above us. Khonshu is an outside source, commanding respect, and manipulating Mark and Stephen. I see Mark’s throwing of the Kippa into the ground as him fighting with God (in this case, Khonshu), and then putting it to his heart because his reality with Khonshu will always be a part of him. My husband (username David Rosenberg, icon is a baby Groot) has also commented on all of your Moon Knight Easter egg videos with more insight as to how Mark’s Judaism has played a significant role throughout the show.
@@LegoReader12345hello I would equate wearing a Star of David or חי (chai, where the ch is a guttural sound, meaning life) to be more like wearing a cross. Most Jews wear these to identify themselves as Jewish, pushing back against assimilation. Jewish law states that men (though women do also wear Kippot in non-Orthodox communities) are obligated to place it on their head at times of prayer. It is a choice to wear a Kippa as a marker of Jewish identity, but it is an obligation for prayer.
@@ryanparker4996 It is a widely accepted symbol of Judaism dating back centuries. It does not have Talmudic ties, but it is a a popular symbol to communicate Jewishness. Therefore, it has become a Jewish symbol too.
When “Steven” comforted Marc outside the house, it felt very serious and direct, and I thought his accent was gone or more like the 3rd one mentioned. I really thought that was Jake speaking to Marc not Steven.
But that wouldn’t really make sense since we’d need another “physical being” of jake’s alter. Besides, he hasn’t left the lowest level of this whole organizational realm yet.
I wish I could meet the writers- this episode felt like the most accurate representation (IMO) of did and it was beautifully acted and put together. I personally found it to be hauntingly heartbreakingly beautiful bc of this subject having never being so respectfully written or acted before.
I feel like it could still happen, but after this episode, all of the clues feel like red herrings. I’m just really confused to be honest, but I’m loving the show, and these breakdown videos make me love it even more!
Yes but I don’t think he’s fully fleshed out like Steven is yet. He probably only comes out for a few minutes at a time. Which is why he wasn’t required for the balancing of the heart(s)
Yes. But I will admit that the fact that the scales balanced at the end without finding the third alter confused me. Still, after some consideration, I think the third alter may have been subconsciously forming (and still forming) as a product of Steven’s need, because Steven didn’t realize that he was an alter, as opposing to how Marc consciously formed Steven in a time of great distress. So while Marc reached enlightenment about not being responsible for his brother’s death, Steven hadn’t yet reached enlightenment, because he hadn’t yet acknowledged Jake. I feel like Harrow’s question about if Steven created an alter to punish the world for his mother’s violence hinted at this.
Normally, I'd say tarweret's mentioning of the ancestral plane is confirmation that she's real - since we have verification from an independent character that it IS real. But I don't think the writers necessarily care about that. It's just a name drop easter egg.
I feel like Jake isn't a fully realized alter yet, we keep seeing hints of him, but we never actually see _HIM._ If there was ever a time to actually meet him as a named character in the show I feel like it would have been here, but instead he just seems to be "Marc's unacknowledged rage" ...Kinda feels like a nod to Fight Club, maybe?
This is the only TH-cam channel that gets this show so far IMO … it’s my current opinion that this is konshu’s doing to have Marc master his personalities and have konshu’s expression of the suit and it’s powers multiplied.
Another great video! Really love the production value put into these, really allows us to dig in deeper amazing shows and makes me see how incredibly detail they are in creating them.
I think we have seen Jake multiple times already. So far, I think we have only seen the character drink in non verbal scenes (from the flask). I think that is Jake, getting ready to get closure about his mother at Shiva, trying to protect Marc from having to do it himself. That is until Marc forces his way out because he cannot handle going in, and starts walking away. Just the trauma of recognizing his mother's passing forced Steven out in short succession after (which is basically the only alter that can be blissfully ignorant to what's going on).
Absolutely amazing episode, though heartbreaking for both identities. It’s nice that they are taking care in their representation of DID. I think Doom Patrol on HBO Max does it well also, though Jane is almost ridiculously overburdened.
Hiya! System here. Around 12:15 you mention how sometimes Alters are close to the "surface" or buried! That can happen because they're near the "front"! Or, they're in the headspace doing something else. Or simply unconscious. Sometimes, Marc, Steven , and at times Jake, seem to Co-front, or be co-conscious! Sometimes alters, or the host, won't remember what happened while others were fronting because of a disassociative barrier. Time blindness and memory loss is quite common! : ) -Steven.
great video, as always! i feel like this Moon Knight episode has been one of the best ones to date out of all the other Disney+ Marvel series. (Loki finale & F&WS episode where they get the shield back are two of my all time favorites episodes). I liked how this episode broke done like where you could see the moment that triggered the DID, why the alter is “created” / the way they are or come to be (at least in Steven’s case), i’m wondering if the next episode we’ll get a glimpse of this 3rd alter because I figured that’s who it was at the end of the last episode. The plains of existence kind of reminded me of Loki’s episode where he meets with the Loki variants & they are able to get through the monster guarding Kang. The void? I wonder if that’s a plane of existence too? (TVA style?) I’m SO excited to see what happens next episode. This show just keeps getting better & better.
I'm not sure if it's going to be revealed in the final episode, but there should have been a scene of Steven as a child in the bedroom where Jake switches with him for protection right before his mom bursts in the room to beat him. We would be hearing Steven screaming from the abuse along with his confusion asking why his mom was beating him off screen if it didn't happen. And we know that Steven only remembers his mom as a kind and loving person with no memories of any abuse. A scene like this would even mirror the same scene in episode one where Steven switched with Marc, turning into Moon Knight a split second before the jackal attacked them.
I'm sure someone else pointed this out, but the checkered shirt actually has 3 colors. The white (Steven), the dark blue (Jake), and the shaded lighter blue (Marc) that is the center of the 2 that connects them. But it was great to see someone point out the shirt selection and its connection
I always thought Dr.Harrow seems to be modeled after Carl Gustav Jung rather than Stan Lee. Ethan Hawke also said something like that in an interview, that he modeled the character as a cross between a monk and a doctor like Jung. Thanks for the great videos!

It’s crazy to think that he’s not even talking to somebody.
@@419HLR I KNOW THAT MAKES IT EVEN BETTER

He’s working with his actual brother in those scenes. It’s pretty great.
Unravel...mummies....nice. Lol
Ha i see what you did there
Give Oscar his Oscar already, dammit!
Oscar Issac also mentioned episode 5 was his favorite of the MK series. To play the character is both challenging and rewarding.
Periods. Use them.

This makes sense because both times Stephen comes out bloody it’s right before Stephen is grave danger like in episode one and when he was in Egypt
I like this explanation, it also explains why the scales balanced at the end, because Marc is not at odds with Jake or Steven.
"If you expect disappointment then you can never really be disappointment." - MJ
@@echris10sen they scaled because there was now two hearts on the boat for Marc and Jake. Before there was 3 souls but 2 hearts on the scale. My guess is that Jake will be in that field next episode.

@@floatingfish7413 and that, my friend, is how you fool Anubis and all the underworld rules haha
Same
That's on Marc, for not letting him out.
Same i was expecting him to help them and completely destroy those sand people and Steven and Marc would be just shocked and the scales would get balanced

Oscar Isaac is such a good physical actor, this episode really made me feel every emotion expressed by him, 10000/10 in my book
Yea I believe this too
All good points 👍
I do hope to see a reverse shot of Jake/Scotty in that cab watching them in the street outside Marc’s parents’ house.
Marc made Steven, Khonshu made Jake...for when Marc won't comply with his Justice
Spector
I noticed that as well
Harrow is pretending to call Steven Grant's mother, of course he is calling Mrs Grant. To respect the seperated personality?
@@leungyohana7760 got it all wrong, He was showing him she’s not real, she’s dead, because Steven grant is Marc Spector. There is not Mrs. grant.
Gate 1: brother drowning .
Gate 2:funeral scene for brother
Gate 3: birthday 1
Gate 4 :birthday 2
Gate 5 :walking away from dad
Gate 6: moon knight
Final gate : they go back to the room where Steven is born .
So in essence they did go into 7 memory gates
But there is more
For Jake

Okay, here's the thing: "See you later, alligator; after while, crocodile" is an old saying that these sort of Easter egg videos seem to read WAY too much into. The phrase is even in a song (from the 50s, I think)
Maybe, but it’s hard to argue that they make no sense at all given the context of the show.
@@immanuela209 It's completely understandable, but I'm inclined to chalk it up to pareidolia (tendency to see patterns regardless of whether they're actually there)
@@suziwolf4830 they’re theory channels I mean they have to link everything together to make a good video
This episode was an emotional Rollercoaster
Thank you Doug for asking such good questions and making Ryan explain things in detail.
Halfway though the episode, I wanted Robin Williams to hug Mark and say repeatedly "it's not your fault".
this whole episode the amount of Taxi Cabs in the Background especially when Marc breaks down in the street the Taxi wandering is basically Jake spectating
Do you think that Jake came out or was a result of his mother’s beating bc Steven was out when his mom brought out the belt yet doesn’t remember his mom hating him or beating him as far as we know
Don’t quote me on this but I think Jake might be a protecter alter.
@@dianvarughese3556 I think he is. And he remembers everything that knows both Marc and Steven
Interesting.. Good catch. I didnt think about it.
Marc: host, memory holder
Steven: introject (of roro, marcs brother and Steven grant from the movie he watched.) or (I think) healer? (I’m not too sure, might have to check.)
Jake: protector, perhaps a prosecutor bc if jake was the one about to harm himself in the beginning, that makes him a prosecutor. An alter that harms the system and or sometimes sides with the abuser. Again, might have to check. Hope this was useful
Honestly, DID is treated not by eliminating a personality but by integrating the personality into one person … this is Jake, who will have all the violence and all the knowledge
Some Jewish things you missed: Shiva and the Kippa
When sitting Shiva, it is tradition to cover mirrors in order to concentrate on one’s inner self and not your outward appearance.
I figured the Kippa meant a lot to Jews the same way wearing a Cross means so much to Christians.
@@pamiudoff7883 Thanks for letting me know.
@@pamiudoff7883 the hexagram isnt a jewish symbol though, they just adopted it
@@ryanparker4996 It is a widely accepted symbol of Judaism dating back centuries. It does not have Talmudic ties, but it is a a popular symbol to communicate Jewishness. Therefore, it has become a Jewish symbol too.
15:46 Puppy Dog face moment! Can never get over that! This episode's class is unfathomable!!!
Do you think there's a third personality?
I feel like it could still happen, but after this episode, all of the clues feel like red herrings. I’m just really confused to be honest, but I’m loving the show, and these breakdown videos make me love it even more!
100%. There’s still no explanation for the third sarcophagus and they keep on dropping hints.
I hope so
The kid making the acting switch was amazing! Definitely rewatching this episode before the next one drops!
Normally, I'd say tarweret's mentioning of the ancestral plane is confirmation that she's real - since we have verification from an independent character that it IS real. But I don't think the writers necessarily care about that. It's just a name drop easter egg.
If Hela's real in the MCU, Taweret & Ammit are also hella real.
Did anyone else get flashbacks to the Pixar movie Soul - with Moonwind's boat navigating the desert of lost souls? Had the same colour vibe too.
There’s definitely a third personality. Who killed the ppl when both Marc and Steven said it wasn’t them.
When you said Bing Bong was #2 I was like: "What can be sadder than that?". Then you mentioned Wilson from Castaway. Well done sir.
Such a heartbreaking episode! How I wish Moon Knight is a movie instead of The Eternals.
If it had been a movie, though, we wouldn't get six hours of Moon Knight.
@@ColorMeConfused29 ohh, true.
You out did yourself on this analysis Ryan!! EXCELLENT!
3:17 mental health discussions are SO IMPORTANT, thanks Ryan!
I love how theirs subtle details they included in hinting towards Jack Lockley’s presence. This show is too good
Absolutely amazing episode, though heartbreaking for both identities.
So much respect for clarifying vernacular around DID and apologizing for use of antiquated terms. Good on you, Ryan. 👍
This Episode was IMO the best one by a mile so far.
21:50 Correction: Dr. Harrow's office is a redress of the Ammit cult storage room with the bodies from episode 2. The giveaway is the windows.
