His mom had been told he was done, and she was on her way. She just wasn't fast enough in his opinion, so he let us know how he felt about that. One for a Westie and one for a Border Terrier from the larger cut of fabric, and one for a Yorkie from the small cut. I doubled up the fabric and sewed all around, turned it right side out and it came out perfect! 😍

@Blackmail The fabric is 100% cotton. It is the same type used for quilting. It can fray, but when you cut out the fabric using pinking shears (this cuts the fabric in a zig zag pattern--not straight) it almost completely eliminates fraying.

Yes. That is all I use. All the cotton prints that I buy are 45ish" wide. In fact I don't like the 60" fabric, because it makes them a little bit too big. When you buy 1 yard 7" that is 43", so it makes the square, once you cut off the selvages.

I'm just curious as today when I got my dog's nails trimmed they put one on him, though they never usually do that just for his nails ($7 service, I'm not expecting these extra touches). Just to look cute. The dogs I groom recognize that the bandana is the last part of the groom, so they get all excited when they see it. I normally put bows on girls, and bandanas for the boys. It is all just for fun.

Yes, I buy shorter lengths all the time. I start out the video with the length folded in half, so you wouldn't do that. Make a triangle by folding from the folded corner. You will be matching the cut edge to the fabric's folded edge. The selvage edge is going to laying across the width of the fabric. Cut off the selvage, while cutting through the bottom fabric (so you should be cutting through 4 layers). Cut through the long edge of the triangle and cut the fold. Now you should have 4 large triangles. Now you can just follow the video from 2:31 and finish out cutting them. If that doesn't make sense I can make another video showing how to fold and cut odd lengths of fabric.

Couple ways you can go about it, you can get a job as a bather at Petco or PetSmart, then get paid to be trained. Pros: you get paid while learning, they have benefits. Cons: you have to sign a 2 year commitment, corporate grooming salon have a LOT of rules and regulations, the quality of the education you receive really varies from decent to really really crappy. Another option is to get a job at a independent grooming salon as an apprentice. Pros and Cons: All depends on who you are apprenticing too. If you find the right groomer, you can become a great groomer and have a good time. But you are also limited weaknesses the groomer might have. This option takes the most time. The third path is to attend a grooming school. This is what I did. You receive a much more thorough education. There are even some online schools (but do NOT use ABC, they have a really crappy reputation). The disadvantage is that it can be expensive. But if you attend a accredited school, you may qualify for student loans.

After you cut off the selvedge you have a square that is 43" x 43", that is cut in triangles and eventually cut in half. So using my maths, and the pythagorean theorem, the triangle before the last cut is, 21.5" on the edges and 30.4" on the long edge. Does that help?
Okay, I took it one step forward, after the last cut you are left with two different shaped bandanas. The "smaller" one is 30.4" on the long edge, the point is about 4" from that edge, the two angled edges are 15.7" each. The bigger bandana has that inward angled angle, they are 15.7" each and the outside edges are 21.5". Okay, enough math for today, I got a kitty to give a haircut too.
In my video I tell you not to cut the last fold (and then I fold through the longwise, which I do cut). If you wanted bandannas on the smaller end you could cut that last fold. Give me a second and I will figure out how big.
Okay, if I still remember the Pythagorean theorem, if you cut another triangle, the equal sides would be about 11" and the long end would be 15 1/2". See if that works better for you.
Most cotton fabric that you buy from the craft store is about 44"-45" across BUT you have to remove the selvages (the borders). Once you do that you have anywhere from 42-43" across, so to make a square you would buy that same length. 1 yard= 36" So I have found that buying exactly 1' 7" of fabric (if the fabric store sells buy the inch) makes for the least amount of waste.
Sorry, I didn't see your question sooner. The big one will fit a Golden retriever. The only breed it doesn't quite fit is a Newfie or St Bernard type of dog.
When you buy fabric from most of the stores it comes folded in half length wise. So I am taking this first lengthwise fold for granted. At one point I open up the fabric and I talk about the "cut ends" versus the "selvedge edge". I really need to do a version showing how to cut the fabrics if you can't get exactly 1' 7". The basic concept is that you are buying a big square of fabric from the fabric store. You fold it in half to make a long rectangle, then you fold it in half again to make a square (with four layers of fabric). I hope that helps to clarify the first steps.
I guess it depends. The easiest thing to do is to find fabric that is 60" wide instead of the normal 45". If you want to end up with 16 of the large and 16 of the small, buy 1 2/3 yard of the 60" fabric (this will make it squares and limit waste). But if you just want it for one dog, buy as close to 30" of the fabric as you can, you will still end up with 8 of the small and 8 of the large. Then you would end up with bandanas that are about 30" long, at the neck on the smaller bandana , and 42" on the bigger one. If you use 45" fabric, the neck edge of the larger bandana is around 31". That is if i used the pythagorean theorem correctly. Let me know if that helps. If it doesn't, measure the dog's neck and we can figure out how to make the perfect bandana for the dog.

+Kathy Federico Believe me when I say, I learned from experience. It is the same thing with larger prints. You can completely loose any idea of the pattern with the smaller sized bandannas.
Come on people, dog are goods and lovely but that is normal sound. We have a grooming salon and we take a lot of care but that is normal. All groomer know that you can’t leave the dogs doing what they want. We teach the dogs with love and determination but you need to teach them. So the people that have complain about the noise are people that never give the dog a good teaching and the dog break everything in the house and make poo in everywhere. Start teaching your dog to make a better lovely friend that people can enjoy it.
I have explained this so many times, I just should add it as part of the video description. It has been 13 years now, so I don't remember what the name of the dog was, but I do remember (from having to explain it all the time) he was a Husky. If you know anything about them, they are incredibly verbal. They "talk" the entire groom. That means that sometimes I need headphones to protect my hearing from the howling. That is just how they are. I had finished grooming him, and he was waiting for his mom to pick him up. He is in a kennel literally 2 feet behind my coworker, who was recording. We keep them in kennels when we aren't working with them for their own safety. I assure you he survived the experience, He just felt the need the share his feelings so we didn't forget he was there.
+trueloveis4u You can still use it. The whole idea is to create squares so that you can cut them into triangles. Once you cut off the selvage (the long end), you should have fabric that is about 43" wide, folded in half, it is 21.5". So you should be able to have 3 full squares, with about 7" left over to do whatever you want with.
I'm not sure which fold you are talking about, since there is 5 or 6 of them. Technically you don't have to make any of the folds, if you can cut straight and are good at judging center lines. I'm not good at either, even though I have been sewing since I was ten years old. I also want the bandanas to be consistent size.
Don't ever get a dog then. They do a whole lotta of whining with little reason. And if you had read any of the previous messages I explain why the dog is whining. He isn't in danger, there is nothing wrong with him, he is a HUSKY waiting for his mom to pick him up. Husky are verbal.
Thats what dogs are like in the groomers they hate it there its not a relaxing pamper day for them it can get stressful but its cruel to be kind once the dogs are done and back with their owner they feel 10 times better
Not a groomer I take it. Your comment is so misinformed. Yes, dogs love to get back to their owners, but grooming does not have to be stressful and they don't all hate it. Of the 500 doggie clients I currently have only a handful experience "grooming anxiety". About half of the dogs I groom run to see me. They "tolerate" grooming, but they love the attention they are getting. I've mentioned before that the dog in the back ground is a Husky and Huskies like to do a lot of "talking".
"people get confused" because at the most crucial part of the video you are holding the material up in the air and go too quickly. the video was great up till then but then you ruined it. I recommend that you redo this video with you cutting material on the table not up in the air.
Thanks for the feedback. You are the first one to say they are confused. The people that were confused were looking at a diagram that I drew on paper. Once again, not a TH-cam star here, just a pet groomer making a video with my camera. I do need to make another video, but that will be to show how to cut the bandanna if you only have a yard of material. If I ever get around to that, maybe it will make more sense.

I would recommend that you never become a groomer..or have children, if that amount of whining bothers you. Come on!!!! He is in a kennel safe, waiting to be picked up by his owners. Some dogs are more verbal than others.

Back in 2011 this was the ONLY video showing this method of cutting bandannas, now there are dozens. Why would you even bother making a comment? Always wash and dry your fabric before project so it can shrink first before sewing, to prevent puckering

Once you do that you have anywhere from 42-43" across, so to make a square you would buy that same length. 1 yard= 36" So I have found that buying exactly 1' 7" of fabric (if the fabric store sells buy the inch) makes for the least amount of waste.

Sorry, I didn't see your question sooner. The big one will fit a Golden retriever. The only breed it doesn't quite fit is a Newfie or St Bernard type of dog.

Cutting with pinking shears leaves a zig zag edge, which stops fraying. They get rough looking, but I've had them last on my own dog for a month.

Second fold shown not the first original fold... Causing issues for others how do you have two folds when you have only folded it once
When you buy fabric from most of the stores it comes folded in half length wise. So I am taking this first lengthwise fold for granted. At one point I open up the fabric and I talk about the "cut ends" versus the "selvedge edge". I really need to do a version showing how to cut the fabrics if you can't get exactly 1' 7". The basic concept is that you are buying a big square of fabric from the fabric store. You fold it in half to make a long rectangle, then you fold it in half again to make a square (with four layers of fabric). I hope that helps to clarify the first steps.

Just a FYI the cut edge is called the raw edge. The white is the selvage edge.
How many yards for size xl
I guess it depends. The easiest thing to do is to find fabric that is 60" wide instead of the normal 45". If you want to end up with 16 of the large and 16 of the small, buy 1 2/3 yard of the 60" fabric (this will make it squares and limit waste). But if you just want it for one dog, buy as close to 30" of the fabric as you can, you will still end up with 8 of the small and 8 of the large. Then you would end up with bandanas that are about 30" long, at the neck on the smaller bandana , and 42" on the bigger one. If you use 45" fabric, the neck edge of the larger bandana is around 31". That is if i used the pythagorean theorem correctly. Let me know if that helps. If it doesn't, measure the dog's neck and we can figure out how to make the perfect bandana for the dog.

+Kathy Federico Believe me when I say, I learned from experience. It is the same thing with larger prints. You can completely loose any idea of the pattern with the smaller sized bandannas.
Come on people, dog are goods and lovely but that is normal sound. We have a grooming salon and we take a lot of care but that is normal. All groomer know that you can’t leave the dogs doing what they want. We teach the dogs with love and determination but you need to teach them. So the people that have complain about the noise are people that never give the dog a good teaching and the dog break everything in the house and make poo in everywhere. Start teaching your dog to make a better lovely friend that people can enjoy it.

I have explained this so many times, I just should add it as part of the video description. It has been 13 years now, so I don't remember what the name of the dog was, but I do remember (from having to explain it all the time) he was a Husky. If you know anything about them, they are incredibly verbal. They "talk" the entire groom. That means that sometimes I need headphones to protect my hearing from the howling. That is just how they are. I had finished grooming him, and he was waiting for his mom to pick him up. He is in a kennel literally 2 feet behind my coworker, who was recording. We keep them in kennels when we aren't working with them for their own safety. I assure you he survived the experience, He just felt the need the share his feelings so we didn't forget he was there.

+trueloveis4u You can still use it. The whole idea is to create squares so that you can cut them into triangles. Once you cut off the selvage (the long end), you should have fabric that is about 43" wide, folded in half, it is 21.5". So you should be able to have 3 full squares, with about 7" left over to do whatever you want with.

I'm not sure which fold you are talking about, since there is 5 or 6 of them. Technically you don't have to make any of the folds, if you can cut straight and are good at judging center lines. I'm not good at either, even though I have been sewing since I was ten years old. I also want the bandanas to be consistent size.

Don't ever get a dog then. They do a whole lotta of whining with little reason. And if you had read any of the previous messages I explain why the dog is whining. He isn't in danger, there is nothing wrong with him, he is a HUSKY waiting for his mom to pick him up. Husky are verbal.
Thats what dogs are like in the groomers they hate it there its not a relaxing pamper day for them it can get stressful but its cruel to be kind once the dogs are done and back with their owner they feel 10 times better
Not a groomer I take it. Your comment is so misinformed. Yes, dogs love to get back to their owners, but grooming does not have to be stressful and they don't all hate it. Of the 500 doggie clients I currently have only a handful experience "grooming anxiety". About half of the dogs I groom run to see me. They "tolerate" grooming, but they love the attention they are getting. I've mentioned before that the dog in the back ground is a Husky and Huskies like to do a lot of "talking".
"people get confused" because at the most crucial part of the video you are holding the material up in the air and go too quickly. the video was great up till then but then you ruined it. I recommend that you redo this video with you cutting material on the table not up in the air.
Thanks for the feedback. You are the first one to say they are confused. The people that were confused were looking at a diagram that I drew on paper. Once again, not a TH-cam star here, just a pet groomer making a video with my camera. I do need to make another video, but that will be to show how to cut the bandanna if you only have a yard of material. If I ever get around to that, maybe it will make more sense.

I would recommend that you never become a groomer..or have children, if that amount of whining bothers you. Come on!!!! He is in a kennel safe, waiting to be picked up by his owners. Some dogs are more verbal than others.

Kathleen Lu thats because you have never worked professionally with animals. Thats ok, but before you pass judgment educate your self a little. Im a dog walker/sitter/groomer all dogs whine, it dosnt mean they are uncomfortable. that is NOT an uncomfortable whine.

LOL Okay. I am a professional groomer, not a TH-cam star. I recorded it because some friends were asking how I cut bandannas and they didn't understand the diagram I made. Back in 2011 this was the ONLY video showing this method of cutting bandannas, now there are dozens. Why would you even bother making a comment? Right now there are 34 people who didn't like the video. More power to you all.
