I am 53 years old and consider myself to be a high earner. My job provides me the option to contribute the employer contributions to my Roth 401k. Should I do that or should I continue to direct that to my Traditional 401k ahead of retirement?

As a high income earner can you easily afford to contribute max of $22,500 to your traditional 401(k) and towards retirement? What is your Federal Tax Bracket and percentage of company match? I f you don't know all this then its best you consult with an advisor.

I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

Investing in Roth IRA can be a good choice since they are funded with after tax dollars, your contributions can grow tax-free over time. When you withdraw money from your Roth IRA in retirement, you won’t have to pay tax on it, which will help you keep more of your hard-earned money. I retired with 5 million dollars

Becoming a millionaire through a Roth IRA or a 401(k) involves different strategies for maximizing profits. A Roth IRA offers tax-free withdrawals in retirement, which can be advantageous if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in life. On the other hand, a 401(k) provides tax-deferred growth and potential employer contributions, boosting your savings. The optimal choice depends on factors like your current and future tax situation, employer match, and investment options. Consulting a financial advisor can help tailor a strategy that aligns with your financial goals and circumstances.

Fortunately, I had a college economics teacher that taught me a lesson at 18. That lesson was: for every huge, frivoluos purchase you make, you need to have an investment double it's worth, this doesn't necessarily mean you should always invest when you make a purchase, it simply means living within your means. Varied sources of income is wise and especially like i said, living within your means. Whenever you're about to make a huge, dumb purchase that doesn't add value think about taxes and how you get your income. I made $272k combined net last year and paid no Federal taxes.

Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

I've come to realize that the key to amassing wealth lies in making sound investments. I purchased my first home at the age of 21 for $87,000 and sold it for $197,000. My second home, acquired for $170,000, was later sold for $320,000, and my third property, purchased at $300,000, fetched $589,000, with buyers covering all closing costs and expenses. Not reaching a million before retirement feels like an unfulfilled goal...

If you pay tax on your money by using the After-tax employee contribution the benefit here is: that you can move any amount of money into the Roth IRA in the back door, increasing your Roth account because the front door is limited to $6500 if you are 50 over.

This is all true. And I have been doing all of this since 2010 (that is when I figured this out!). I have a TIP!! Regarding the Plain Back Door (the $7,500/$6,500 for 2023 in the example). I also had some Pretax IRAs (Pretax means you deducted them on your taxes). Before you do any conversion of your After-Tax IRAs, you need to get rid of your pretax IRAs; otherwise, your Back door Roths will be partially taxable. One way to do this is ask your employer if they allow Rollover contributions to the 401K. I rolled my Pretax IRAs into my 401K, problem solved!

  • @james5460
    @james5460 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

You'd better be making good six-figure money to take advantage of most of this. But max out your company 401k - do it as a Roth if you can - and also make the individual Roth on top of that - $6500 or $7500 depending on your age - and you're accumulating $30k+ per year just doing that. And that ain't beanbag, as Jack would say. It helps if you have extra money lying around. A lot.

Investing in Roth IRA can be a good choice since they are funded with after tax dollars, your contributions can grow tax-free over time. When you withdraw money from your Roth IRA in retirement, you won’t have to pay tax on it, which will help you keep more of your hard-earned money. Compounding is the process of earning interest on your initial investment, as well as on the interest that investment earns. This means that over time, your investment can grow exponentially. So the earlier you start investing, the more time your investment has to grow through compounding.

If you only want to move 50% of that pre-existing $10k to roth IRA (just because you don't want to pay tax for all $10k this year, then you can only move 50% of the $6k (that is $3k) can be moved to roth IRA as a backdoor roth.

So as long as you don't have any preexisting saving in your rollover IRA account from any previous year savings, you are free and clear to do that $6k bacl door roth move.

Yep, this is exactly right. You can’t convert only the non-deductible portion if you already have pre-tax contributions. Therefore, you’re going to get hit with taxes.

If you’re on a 1099 can you contribute to a solo 401k and a regular Roth IRA or would you need to pay yourself through a corporation/llc to do both ?

When you do it with a 401k this is called an in-plan conversion. You can do it as often as you put money into the account. In fact Fidelity offers this on auto pilot, they will instantly recharacterize your after tax contributions to Roth if you turn the setting on in your account. I am sure other brokerages do as well.

Great information! How readily will banks offer non-recourse loans on multifamily investment property in order to use a self directed IRA since the borrowers income/credit score wont have a bearing on the approval?

So basically, I had to put some of that take home money into the mega backdoor? But where do I get the money to live? For example, If I make $100K, I just live on $30K, and put $70K into retirement? Is this the after tax contribution you are talking about?

@@rafiqtsm1451 In this example, these oil workers didn't have expensive rent, so they can save up that to put back into their roth. For people who have to pay rent and food in major cities, and still want to max out this strategy, they may have to make like at least $200K a year

This is a cut and paste from Fidelity. Taxes: With a conversion, you pay federal income taxes now on the conversion amount, but none on any future earnings as long as when withdrawals are taken, the 5-year aging period has been met and you are age 59½ or over, disabled, or deceased. (In the event of the account holder's death, a spouse or beneficiary could make withdrawals.)

As a soon-to-be retiree, keeping my 401k on track after a bumpy 2022 is a high goal. I've read about investors generating up to $250k ROI in this present sinking market; any suggestions for increasing my ROI before retirement would be greatly appreciated.
