Job: The Bible Explained

  • Watch our Introduction video on the book of Job, which outlines the book's main theme and how it is fulfilled in Jesus.
    Why does God allow us to suffer? Why do bad things happen to good people? What is the relationship between God, suffering, and sin? These are some of the most difficult questions raised about and against Christianity.
    The book of Job takes them head-on but may not give us the answers we want. The majority of Job shows us so many of the wrong ways to explain why we suffer and what God's role is in it. The main answer Job does provide is that, in suffering, God is doing something beyond what our minds and logic can grasp. While we cannot get all the answers we want to why we suffer, Job tells us that God is worth trusting through it.
    Ultimately, Job points us to Jesus. Job's friends tried to blame Job for suffering, while Job eventually ends up blaming God. Neither solutions are correct. Nevertheless, even though we are to blame for much of the suffering we and others experience because of our sin, Jesus takes the blame for it on the cross. Jesus suffered, taking the pain and blame our sins deserved, to show us that God is truly doing something through suffering that we cannot comprehend. He saved the world by suffering on the cross.

    If you have more questions about God and suffering or just want to learn more, we'd like to recommend a few resources:
    David's book, "When God Isn't There" focuses on those who feel far from God or feel like he is absent. This book talks about how God's absence and God's sovereignty over suffering are both for our good: amzn.to/32P7xI1
    D.A. Carson's "How. Long O Lord?" is one of the best reflections of how to understand suffering and evil in the world. It not only offers a brilliant treatment of Job, but also addresses other difficult Biblical texts that deal with suffering: amzn.to/2vGchn3
    For a powerful and relatable treatment of how to understand and walk through the relationship between God and suffering, we'd suggest Timothy Keller's, "Walking with God through Pain and Suffering": amzn.to/2TnJ1us
    Finally, for a very technical treatment of Job as a literary work, that also helps provide answers to the book's overall theology and contribution to questions about suffering, we suggest Robert. Fyall's, "Now My Eyes Have Seen You": amzn.to/2uTqCMJ

    The most beautiful part of the first chapter, where Job loses his livestock and children, is his response. He lost everything he had, yet he never cursed God. Oh Lord, may I have the strength, when everything seems to go wrong and I am in suffering, to never curse you, but always to praise you. Because, you are worthy of all praise. Amen.

      The thief comes to steal kill and destroy, I have come to give life and give it more abundantly John 10:10
      God does not take anything he should never be likened to a thief. Job said this because he did not understand that Satan existed in the first place and gave him a foothold by sacrificing offerings on behalf of his family out of fear. GOD DOES NOT TAKE ANYTHING, HE ONLY GIVES! If God says He formed your child in your womb why would he take (kill) it away. What kind of schizophrenic god do yall serve? The devil STEALS KILLS AND DESTROYS. God give LIFE ABUNDANTLY.

      The point is: Why God would give Job everything he have, if he would take it back again anyways?
      God is suxh an asshole.

    • @KierrahCan
      @KierrahCan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IloveF-CXandF-CFalconViper God didn't take it the devil did. It was Jobs fault. Not God. John 10:10 the thief only comes to steal kill and destroy, I have come so you would have life and more abundantly. The devil went to God and asked for Job, Job had an open door to the enemy of fear. He was making sacrifices for his family out of fear they had sinned. If Job had only made his one offering instead of all the extras the enemy could not have stolen his family. Job blamed it on God because he was not aware of the devils existence, and back then they believed that God was in control of everything (same as now) when the devil is called the god of this world. 2 Corinthians 4:4. He had dominion here until Jesus took back the keys of death hell and the grave. The devil is an a-hole not God. He loves us so much that He sent his one and only son to die for us. He lived a perfect sinless life and was tortured on the cross so He could save the very people who put Him on it. I hope one day you can see God for who He really is. I'm sorry for any hurt you've experienced from Christianity. Some people are not the best representatives for Jesus, and I can definitely be one of them. We aren't perfect but we should strive to look and love like the Father.

    My wife and I lost our baby boy almost a year ago today!....And my wife just told me that I helped her keep her faith during that trying time in our life. All I did was.....Around the time when he died, I told my wife the story of Job....She still has a hard time with his loss, but doesn't blame herself or the Lord like she started to do! So it did my heart good to hear that something I learned as a child in church...CHANGED her negative way of thinking and helped her keep her faith.
    I hope my story helps someone else out there!!!!
    GOD has a PLACE and a PLAN for ALL OF US.

    My parents divorced. It ruined the family. We lost our house. I went off to college and then my dad's place burns down and because of bills from the forclosed house he couldn't pay the insurance bill so I dropped out even after working hard to be a deans list student and go back and help my Dad. Not long after his mother died and then his father. My high school best friend killed himself and two months and a day later my college best friend killed himself. I was homeless. Sleeping in a slide and some of my "friends" had made a mocking and cruel comment on twitter while I'm laying there crying and they are warm in bed with all their earthly needs met...my stomach hurts.
    When things start looking up I find out my "business partner " had been lying and manipulating me. I left with nothing after years of hard work.
    I've wanted to die so much. God take me... But I didn't. I had seen what happens when someone takes their own life to the few that loved them. So I fought everyday. It was hard. REALLY HARD...it was lonely. It was humiliating... And then I met Mr. Hagen. And he brought me back to God. And it was nice. And one day I decided to flip open the bible to a random page and start reading...
    The book of Job
    And I cried tears about my life for the first time WITH TEARS OF JOY
    GOD IS GOOD.
    I'm 26. My place is paid in full. My car is paid. My bills are minimal due to house hacking. I bought my Dad a Rolex and myself one. I've helped friends buy a used car. I have a great best friend. Money comes easy to me more than I ever thought possible.
    It's so funny to me because reading Job 😂 God thank you for giving and taking. You are KING always and forever in my ❤️
    Be good and love the Lord. -Mardu (past pastor)

    Our family suffered a major loss when our youngest boy, just 10 years old, died in a freak accident three years ago. The book of Job had been something the Lord has brought me back to again and again as I have personally sought to grow in my faith in spite of the intense grief of losing my little boy. Fast forward to today.... We are a homeschool family and Job is what we are currently working through in our Bible study work. THANK YOU for this encouragement this morning. I found your video "by accident" and was not prepared for the balm it would be for our still-hurting hearts. May God bless this ministry richly.

    The problem is that Job was never brought up to speed about this “wager” between the Satan and God, so he really couldn’t give a complete testimony. When Job asked God why, God refuses to answer his HONEST question and tries putting him in his place. To me I have hard time with this book, jealous love is not true love. If God is like a Father to us, we would never put our kids in these cruel conditions to test their faith/“love” in this manner. It’s like when you get married and you’ve taken your vows, you trust and love your spouse unconditionally. Why would I then start testing their “faith” or love if they’ve done nothing but keep to the vows. That would be jealousy, and true love is not jealous.

    The Lord gives and the Lord takes away ~ Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Where was I when the Lord gave? - and where will I be when the Lord takes away?
    - surely I'll be in the same place
    Perhaps it's not the meaning of life that is so important but rather the life of meaning?
    Neverthemore and nevertheless, it seems clear that the presence of life seems to be not only the all in all but life in all
    And if God is life, and there is death in life, then there is life in death.

      Thank you so much! So happy that you’re loving the videos!
      As for Job 3:25, Job is lamenting over everything he has lost. When he says, “What I feared has come upon me,” his greatest fears have come true. We don’t need to read into this and think Job was walking around every day fearful that something bad was going to happen to his family, property, and health. Rather, these are things that anyone would dread happening to themselves. Job is basically saying, the worst fears that beset the world have fallen upon me. It is powerful lament language.
      Hope that helps!

It’s a shame that we didn’t last but I trust that Lord knows what’s best for the both of us. If he is the right person for me, God will bring him back according to His will. If not, God will bring in someone who is right for me. I don’t understand what God’s plan for me is just like Job. But I believe that God will give me a happy ending like he did for Job 🙏

    My wife has struggled with hardship all her life. Abusive parents, teachers, classmates, past boyfriends. You name it. The thing is, she always prayed to God for help, but it never seemed to come. She refuses to not believe in God, but stories like this only convince her that her destiny is to suffer for God's plan. And if that's her fate, then she'd rather die. While I can bring up examples of grace and blessings in her life, they pale in comparison to the suffering. Honestly, I'm not sure what to do :(

    Easy-to-Read Version
    13 Look at what God has made. You cannot change a thing, even if you think it is wrong. 14 When life is good, enjoy it. But when life is hard, remember that God gives us good times and hard times. And no one knows what will happen in the future.

    It's interesting to me that the wisdom books really "talk to each other" (this is NOT to say they contradict each other). From Proverbs, one could (wrongly) assume that the law of reciprocity (what you sow is also what you will reap) is ALWAYS true. Ecclesiastes then comes in and says "yeahhhhhh, but sometimes it doesn't work like that... but in the end, it's still good to have a healthy reverence for the LORD and to follow the advice of proverbs." Job then gives a clear example that the law of reciprocity is... actually not a law at all. Sometimes the righteous reap suffering when they did not sew folly.
    If you think about it, the book of Job also shows us how GRACE is possible. If there is underserved suffering, then there is also undeserved mercy. Both of these truths are displayed clearly on the cross of Christ. Because of Christ's undeserved suffering, all who put their trust in Him receive underserved mercy (I love Romans 5:12-21!). Job teaches us the way things work in a world tarnished by sin. God MET US in the world we live in (the world of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job) and it was within that broken framework that He FIXED IT. More than anything else, Job shows us our propensity to misinterpret our circumstances and strongly proclaims the words penned by the prophet Isaiah's hand:
    8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
    9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.
    10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
    making it bring forth and sprout,
    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
    11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
    but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. ~ Isaiah 55:8-11, ESV
    Although Christ's work is accomplished, we still live in the world of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. But the rules of this corrupted world will come to an abrupt end. The Kingdom of God is here; but it's also not yet fully set in place. Christ WILL come again to finish what He started.

    Mu ha mm ad-the messenger of GOD-and those with him are harsh and stern against the disbelievers, but kind and compassionate amongst themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, as they seek GOD's blessings and approval. Their marks are on their faces, because of prostrating. This is the same example as in the Torah. Their example in the Gospel is like plants that grow taller and stronger, and please the farmers. He thus enrages the disbelievers. GOD promises those among them who believe and lead a righteous life forgiveness and a great recompense.

    The book of Job is probably the most prescient book of our time. Over some 3000 years, the Judeo-Christian religion has suffered 2 major crises of faith with the 2nd described by
    Nietzsche as man’s murder of God. When we appeal to God as Job does - our belief so strong that we would simply ignore all else. It is then and only then when we do not get the answer we seek, that our relationship with god is changed forever. The lesson of Job is the warning of man’s illusory dogma which is his construct and not God’s. It is this rare type of arrogance that leads to much suffering. In this post-modern world, material science is the new God but that too has its own limitations. Where will Job look next?

    I can not be the only Christian who hate this book/story- sorry if that is Blasphemous. This answered nothing. Basically, the ONLY reason that Job suffered was to prove to Satan that Job was faithful? Why did God do that? Like, who even cares about satan? And Job was punished for no reason? Then on top of being punished, he was accused by his friends? How does this book teach us anything? Other than God can hurt you if He chooses to? Without cause?

    • @SpokenGospel
      @SpokenGospel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you for your very honest and heartfelt comment. I definitely sympathize with you over the difficulty of this book. There is an irony to your questions, however, that gets to the heart of the book of Job. Like Job's friends, you are looking for a justification for Job's horrible situation. Like Job's friends, and Job himself, we want answers for why things go wrong. Now, it is worth noting that it would be an oversimplification to say that God put Job through this to prove Satan wrong. God gave us this story, not to show how he won an argument with Satan, but to address the misguided theology of Job's day (and ours) that always seeks to attach every blessing to a good action and every bit of suffering to an evil action. Put differently, we want explanations for why things happen - especially bad things. The book of Job is such good news because it proves to us that even in the worst circumstances, especially when we can't put our finger on why things have gone so wrong, God is doing something greater and more incomprehensible than we could possibly discover, define, or predict. God's point in Job is that all suffering has a purpose and is justifiable, even when we can't see its purpose or find a justification. The fact that you are offended by Job means that it is working. You are inhabiting Job's frustration. Just don't stop there. The next step is the one God asked Job to take. To trust him even when he can't understand why God's actions are good, purposeful, and justified. That is the step of faith we must take to trust that God is working all things for good.

      @@SpokenGospel I appreciate this response. When you write "The book of Job is such 'good news' because it proves to us that even in the worst circumstances, especially when we can't put our finger on why things have gone so wrong, God is doing something greater and more incomprehensible than we could possibly discover, define, or predict" I do not see that at all. I kind of see if as a SCARY news, because essentially at any time ever God could cause suffering to the faithful without provocation or reason. Its basically like you are saying our suffering (even though it is at our deep and personal cost and we never asked to exist) is somehow good for God because it lets Him do something greater? That seems weird and contrary to God's nature of not wanting me to suffer. And to then say "God's point in Job is that all suffering has a purpose and is justifiable, even when we can't see its purpose or find a justification." How can this be true if so much suffering (at least in my mind) is from the devil? In the book of Job, Satan did not CAUSE the suffering, which is what gets me. God simply permitted it to prove a point to Satan-- Your explanation of a "misguided theology" DOES help me at least with that part of the story but what doesn't the Bible just flat out say that? Still, does Satan ever get accused of suffering? For example, If a girl is raped by her older brother, was there a "purpose" in that suffering- based on what you wrote? Based on Job, did God "allow" that suffering? How could I know if satan caused a suffering or if God just allowed it to occur? Is her sexual assault "justifiable"? The cause of some greater good? Yes, we hear stories like Joyce Meyer, but what about all the other girls who did not want to publicize their suffering in front of the world, or who even did not reach that liberation in life? What is their greater good? I know in Gods response He says we cannot understand, but that still makes it very very sad. In terms of "trusting" God, humans do not really have any other option, because we are human and He is God. At least for me, my trust is not a "willful" trust, but more of a last option trust because I cannot trust anyone else. A mustard seed faith, literally.

    • @SpokenGospel
      @SpokenGospel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@21truthbetold Thank you for responding honestly and fairly. You bring up a lot of justifiable points, many of which are constantly being discussed and debated by some of the greatest Christian and non-Christian theologians and philosophers of our day (and of pretty much every past generation going all the way back to Job).
      I definitely cannot answer every question you raised in this format. What I can do is point out one really good thing about your response and add one piece of clarification. After that, I'll leave some recommended resources for you to go and dialogue with.
      First, your "mustard seed" of faith that trusts in God as kind of a last resort may not sound good or healthy or robust to you, but it is! Sometimes, that's all we can muster. And the good news is, it's all God requires of us. I just want to encourage you to cling to that bit of faith as you wrestle with these difficult issues.
      Second, I think some of your hang-ups come from a view of God that has been formed more by a consequentialist ethic than the Bible. A consequentialist ethic determines something's good based on how much human suffering it causes or prevents. Something is good insofar as it keeps the greatest amount of people from the greatest amount of suffering. Something is bad insofar as it causes the greatest amount of people the greatest amount of harm. This is not the ethic of the Bible. The ethic of the Bible is that God is good and his actions are good in and of themselves. Therefore, to construct an ethical system apart from God and then use it against God to value his actions as either good or bad is an attempt to become God ourselves. This is the whole point of Job - to break down our false theological, philosophical, and ethical categories as they pertain to why suffering exists in the world and what God's role is within it. All the book allows us to say at the end is what Job says in Job 42:1-6. The good news is that it sounds a lot like the mustard seed faith you have now!
      I know this isn't an easy answer and that there is still a ton of grey area and rocks to turn over. Hopefully the resources below will prove helpful at filling in some of these gaps - though I do believe there are some gaps in the conversation that will not be filled this side of heaven.

    Great way to compare the different diatribes like defenses in court. One of my drama teachers pointed out that Job reads like one of the first scripts and the different voices in the dialogues feel like they are meant to be read like a play.

    • @SpokenGospel
      @SpokenGospel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! It does read a lot like a play, or in this case, a court transcript. I have a lot of thoughts on Eliphaz! Haha. What are you wondering in particular?

    • @keepperspective
      @keepperspective 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spoken Gospel where is Elipaz being insightful and when is he just being hot headed and young? He seems to accurately analyze some of the problems with the other three friends but still not be quite on the same page as God’s overwhelming heart. What do you see his role is?

    • @SpokenGospel
      @SpokenGospel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@keepperspective It is difficult with any of Job's friends to parse right from wrong. I believe the goal of Job is not for us to try to sift through the friends' wrong responses to find what is right or redeemable in them. Rather, I believe the goal of reading the dialogues from Job's friends, even Eliphaz, is to provide a thorough discussion on what's called "retributive justice." This is the idea that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people on a one to one basis. If something bad happens to you, you did something to deserve it. This is the ideology God says is wrong. Job shows us that our suffering accomplishes more than just punishment for sin. Sometimes, our suffering can be a part of something bigger God is doing - namely gaining glory for himself or refining us into more holy people.
      As for our instinct to say, "Well, not all of what Eliphaz and his friends said is wrong," I think that is one of the problems Job is highlighting. Bad theology is often laced with good intentions and other right ideas about God. However, a little poison ruins the whole dish, if you will. Using right theological claims about God to prove a wrong theological conclusion does not make the right claims redeemable. Instead, this observation should cause us to look for theological claims that are really wolves in sheep's clothing. Ideas that sound like they have a lot of right and biblical ideas in them, but that draw wrong and unbiblical conclusions.
      I hope this is helpful.

    • @keepperspective
      @keepperspective 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spoken Gospel Lovely answer and quite a clear cut through of the argumentative overgrowth to expose the root of the problem. Part of the sticky bit is it is quite easy for us to detect the biblical parts of a premise and then get muffled about objecting to the unbiblical conclusion. As you say, the enemy’s strategy, seen even in the throne rooms scenes, is reduction, have less of God and fewer biblical premises at all. If you leave out a bit of God’s character, you can still sound like your own the straight and narrow while going the absolute opposite direction. So in Job’s friends we recognize when the right sound resolves to discord, as Michael Card says, “They all sound so right but they’re wrong about you.” Underneath the accusations leveled at Job always lie attacks on the character of God, that he is too harsh, too simple and too small for Job to worship Him for His own sake. So God’s answer is always his overwhelming size and completeness, or as Paul says, to put the total fullness of God accessible to us in Christ. And then there is nothing to do but bow down and worship.

    • @keepperspective
      @keepperspective 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a structural level, why not summarize Eliphaz with the three friends? Why is it not four friends? The books structure introduces him so late, outside of the pattern of threefold argument and response. Why is it important that he is separate and last?

  • @jtrenda333
    @jtrenda333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hm, don’t get me wrong, this was really well made. However, when I read the book of Job, what I get from it is that no one is good but God alone. Jesus even makes this statement in Mark 10:18. You also left out a key part of the book, namely when Elihu speaks to Job and his friends, which I believe is representative of the Holy Spirit because he convicts Job of his pride. He says that Job has justified himself and that’s something you don’t do. Also notice how God never condemns Elihu for the words he spoke, but God does condemn his three friends. It’s an often overlooked portion of the book and I wonder why. Everyone wants to make themselves Job because they’re going through something. But as the Word says, Job was “blameless”. How many of us are totally blameless? Not one. People say God is okay with us having a lot of money because just look at Job. But the Bible says Job was blameless. Again, how many of us are blameless? Not one. God was making a point of that and God knew Job would fail, but it was never about Job. And it’s not about our suffering. After God made His point, he generously gave Job more than he had before. What a good God we serve!

That group also references “the satan” in their corresponding video about Job. This was a very confusing and frustrating way to being a book that tackles difficult topics. Especially because I haven’t found anything to corroborate that explanation, and my Bible NIV and KJV, in Job, refer to Satan, capital S, no “the”. Have you heard this before and should I just disregard it and keep it moving? Thank you

    I think message this book gives is incredibly misleading. “In suffering, God is doing something greater than anyone can comprehend” 7:02 is simply ignorant to what actually happened in the story. What I got from all of this is that God is ignorant to human well being and life. If Job had found out that God had let Satan do all those things to Job then I bet he would curse God and I think he should. God essentially put a wager on Job, endangering his life and his well being just to prove a point to Satan. An innocent God fearing man who is being used and God doesn’t even go to Job and tell him. Job is completely unaware of the conversation between God and Satan, instead of God telling Job the real reason why he is suffering he goes to him saying “ Your asking me why you’re suffering? Explain to me how I stitched the wind together”. What?! Even at the end of the story he gets more kids and crops but was it even worth it? The crops are nice but the kids he originally lost simply cannot be replaced by having more kids.
