Cycling over running I have increased my cycling to 3 hard rides per week. Zero run training, only one 5k run per week at max. Run times have come down considerably with zero injuries, all based on fitness gained from cycling which had the advantage of being (for me) more enjoyable
Same over here I stopped running because i got too many injury (small ones like tendinitis) and then i discover cycling. Best thing ever. First off you can drink and eat during your training on your bike, i just love it, but then its only get better because you can travel to another country whereas in running you can't run long enough to get there :D
I started the year well over the 100kg mark and just by watching what I eat, plus some gym sessions each week, plus walking and riding my bike. I have both lost weight and recently in a community run I improved my 4 km time by 2 minutes and more importantly I felt I did it easy. My cardiovascular system had improved exponentially. Considering that this recent run was my first run in 8 months.
Funny. I started t do serious sports in cycling (previously I did some soccer in school, but nothing important, so runnign was familiar to me). Several years after doing cycling, I stopped doing it. You know, work and lazyness drove me into the state of mind in which you have too much excuses to not have the time to do it. Wild years. Aaaaaanyway, I came back to sport by..... running! Yeah! I mean, is more inmediate. I just got my shorts and shoes, and bam! out to the park. At that time I was totally physically undone. No remains of any kind of fitness. I did running for 4 years. I started too to include a day per week of cycling. Not too much, just like 50 Km or so. But a fasciitis come to visit me, and I had to stop running. Solution? I just jumped back into the bike full time for six months, until I got rid of that injury. End of the story? I came back to cycling in full force. I'm enjoying it since then more than ever. To be honest, I still take a run from time to time, my average distance now is around 10-12 K, but at a 5:20 min/km tempo. So, pretty low profile runner. Also, I like to have a trail run from time to time. But sure: running it's more aggresive for our bodies.
J B I run in the mornings, as long as it's not raining or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Then at night, same but I bike. Inside if rain or too Damn cold.
Hello GCN, I have a question: How often professional teams (road racing) change tires on big tours like Giro D'Italia etc. Do they change them after every stage or not?
Depends on the rider. A guy like Froome may get fresh tires (less chance of flats for the protected rider) if the weather could be bad, while Boswell may go for a while. Generally most tires will go flat before tread wears off, and more used ones get relegated to team training wheels. They never wear the tread all the way down. And it's common for teams to mix wheels, there isn't really dedicated sets to each bike.
Thru-frame routing cables - Before taking out the old cable, use a thin sleeve such as the inner of a shift housing and guide it up the old cable through the other side of the frame. Remove the old cable and with the sleeve still in the frame, reverse the process by inserting new cable and remove the sleeve from the opposite side. For full housing through the frame, I suggest using the double ended barb that comes with Rock Shox dropper posts. Just screw one end to the old housing then the other to the new and guide them through.
For the dropper seat post I would say it's useless for cyclo-cross as there is no steep downhill And to remount on your bike you need to be firmly seated in your saddle in order to clip in (Matt knows)
MAXIMILIEN SCHNEIDER I would also think that the risk of the dropper post jamming in the bottom position because of mud/snow/ice is too much to handle, it could easily ruin the race...
I started racing cyclo-cross on my trek fuel. It has a dropper post. I used it for the first three races then quit using it cause I got better at dismounts. FYI
Running v Cycling : I personally ran for all my adult life as well as following pro riding. But only after suffering a deteriorating knee did I finally get a road bike, not counting the endless number of bodge bikes I had in my youth.. I can now push myself as hard as I ever did running with no physical complaints other than being knackered!.. Agree with absolutely everything that Matt said, I have the beautiful Peake District 5 mins away, my only regret is I didn't do it earlier.. Chapo cycling! Chapo GCN 👍😎
From the BBC; "A common swift has taken the title as the fasted bird recorded in level flight. The swift (Apus apus) can power itself to a speed of 111.6km/h (69.3mph) flying horizontally and even upwards....." - Guess I'm not very good at this cycling lark.
Hi :) my husband got me into mountain biking and it's awesome. The fat biking is like riding a bulldozer. I've been watching a lot of the GCN :) I was wanting to know what is a good entry level cross bike? I'm in Alaska, so we have tons of hills and random cracks in the pavement. #torqueback
While I have merely dabbled in CX racing, I think a dropper post could be an advantage for some of the more technical courses and could make mounting, dismounting, and carrying (on the course and in the car) simpler.
Hi GCN, Love the show, presenters, hacks and workouts. Have subscribed for over a year and learnt a lot. You guys are responsible for my spending a lot of money on bike stuff, including buying a cross bike as my winter road bike! My question: I've just bought some mid-section carbon wheels as an upgrade for my road bike. A contributing factor was that I was hoping to use my old wheels as a turbo set and be able to quickly and simply switch between the two. I know plenty of others who do this with no fuss. However, my old wheel's cassette is way out of alignment on the new carbon wheel which means I'll have to use Si's maintenance video to help me re-index each time I switch. Can re-indexing be avoided with an easy hack to lower the barrier to my jumping on the turbo? Is there anything I can do to align both free-hubs/cassettes on the two wheels?
#TORQUEBACK Hello GCN and merry Christmas!!! I just started cycling as my primary sport and I am 16 years old. Since now I had been playing football and doing some riding (my longest ride being 100km) so I have a good fitness level. I would like to know the improvements I should expect in my first year, as I want to reach the level of the racers in my age and not getting dropped in every race.
#Torqueback: When I was young and watched the tour, I always thought: the pros must be so jealous of the motorbike riders when suffering on a big climb. Have you ever had a feeling like that in a race? :) merry christmas!
Hi GCN. I've just changed my chain and when I put power down, it's slipping over the teeth on the cassette and/or chain ring. I have obviously left it too long before changing and will now get a new cassette and chainring. However, this got me wondering whether I would do any additional damage if I was just to continue using the old cassette, chain and chainring, which actually all seem to work fine? Thanks guys
Hey GCN. Can you think of making app for your trainings, USING ANT+ FE-C? I've been working out on zwift for a while but I'd love to do some of your climbs with my smart trainer. #torqueback
Cycling is the superior sport because there is no such thing as the 'running tour of wine country' or a '2 week running tour of Italy.' Cycling allows you to see more at whatever intensity you want. Running only has 'no running tomorrow' options for any real distance.
I've recently changed my chain and changed my rear mech cable in order to get rid of noisy and bad gear changes. The gears now change smoothly and there is no noise. However I cannot seem to drop down to the lowest cog and when getting to the highest (smallest) cog it feels like I can shift down again. What have I done wrong. I believe the limit screws are set correctly as I do not drop the chain?
Im thinking of heading to France/Spain to do some mountain training, but Im not sure when the roads will be open/passable. In Northern spain or the Pyrenees what time of year do the mountain passes eg Tourmalet/Angliru become free from snow and suitable for road bikes?
Hi, Matt! Love the channel. I recently got an indoor trainer and have been using it with Zwift. Love it! However, I'm finding my saddle to be much more uncomfortable when riding inside in a fixed position. I assumed it was because I don't need to use my torso to hold myself, and the bike, in an upright position, and I end up putting all of my weight on the saddle. My question is this: do you or other members at GCN have a similar experience riding on a trainer, and do you recommend certain types of saddles for this problem? Thanks! #TORQUEBACK (my saddle came with my bike--I believe it is a Syncros Women's FL2.0 Saddle)
#TORQUEBACK Hi guys, here's a winter training question. It's a proper winter now and I can't force myself to do more than one hour rides, outdoor or indoor (especially indoor). But I still want to do my low-intensity work, to improve my power at lower heart rate, and my general endurance. Does low intensity efforts have to be always long? Are there benefits even for shorter sessions?
Hello Guys! First keep up the great shows! For a beginner cyclist like me they are like a bible. And second, I have a question I cannot find info about in the wide web... How often should we change when drafting? Would it be measured by distance or time? #TORQUEBACK
Dan's dropper post video is an all-time GCN presentation and we should all be using them one way or another. And on the two-a-days, I would say, in regard to weight loss, those are fantastic and I did them in the winter of 2010 at a Gold's Gym to lose a lot of weight during an annual competition/promotion they call the Gold's Gym Challenger--twelve weeks to transform your body, or as I called it, a race for fat people. And, sigh, I was one of those fat people and I had to do something about it because, at age 50, I was starting to experience the detrimental effects of morbid obesity, arg, plus I had just gotten a part time physical job at Walmart, after losing two long-held jobs in the economic downturn, and I knew if I didn't do something to get the weight off, I would blow out a knee or something. So, as a jovial fat guy with stout cycling legs, I spent that winter pretty much just working my part-time job and working out at Gold's Gym doing two-a-days which were a string of aggressive motos of 20 or 30 minutes on their cardiobikes with power meters--it is great to train with power--and some weights and, well, frankly, a little showing off with the leg press machine. After the muscle guys did their thing, I'd sometimes jack those big plates up, too, and do it over and over and over again. Then I'd go back and do my ten-pound curls. It was good to be back and I am forever thankful to be back in the saddle again, not that I had ever left but when you're fat, people just think of you as being fat and really, who wants that?
Hi GCN , my new carbon roadbike just arrived- yeahh ;) ... Now I wonder is it necessary to use carbon paste on the seat post ?(some say no, some yes)... Or is it ok to fit it "dry". Love your channel :) Have a peaceful and great Christmas! #torqueback
I really love your videos you are the first best cycling channel i hope u see my question. What is the best position in headwinds when riding solo? #TorqueBack
My local gym has just got two shiny new watt bikes. What tips would you have for using them to train over the winter? ( I can't afford a powermeter so they are my only source of power data) #TorqueBack
Want some suggestion on the clipless pedals.Been in cycling for around half year and now ride with a entry level bike.Wondering is it necessary to change to a clipless pedals or wait until getting a more medium level bike? I'm really scared about falling off with the clipless pedals. Will it cause really serious injury?#TORQUEBACK
Hi GCN. I love watching every single presenter currently on GCN, but when are you going to get a female presenter? Statistically, there is a large gap in gender mode share with cycle commuting, and seeing more equal representation in cycling media would be a great place to start to help bridge that gap? #torqueback
Dear GCN, After watching the video about waxing your chain(great video by the way) i was left with one question. Is it still necessary to lube my chain as frequently as i used to? Or is it possible to do it less or even stop doing it at all for the time that the wax is still on?
#TorqueBack i'm preparing for some long distance events next year i wonder if there is some benefit in training for example 90km on an average pace without getting too excited and on the next 30k (120 total) doing 10 minutes blocks on flat with some rest between each at a high pace. on HR languaje 85-90%. i see pros get on every ride 5 to 6 hours easily thanks a lot
Do you have any useful tips for storing your kits, (jerseys, bibs, gloves, arm warmers, etc.) Mine are stored willy-nilly throughout my closet and I would like be more organized. Thanks. #Torqueback
Nick, it refers to both, and it is all down to which you want/can use. Your Zone 2 will equate to a range of power and a range of heart rate. If you have a power meter or a trainer with power, then using power to measure efforts is usually more reliable because power is more consistent. Heart rate will have a lag (i.e. it takes a certain amount of time for your heart rate to adjust from one level of effort to another), whereas power is pretty much instantaneous. Lag is less of an issue in easier endurance training zones, but becomes more obvious over shorter harder intervals. Heart rate is also more variable depending on conditions (it will be higher if its hot etc), and can be affected by how fresh or tired you are.
#torqueback - what are your thoughts on the possible negative effects of too much screen time crossing over to being on trainer and doing programs such as Zwift? We are already glued to our phones and iPads when not on the bike , why would we want to encourage it while on ? I tried zwift for the first time and found myself more distracted by the screen than what I was doing and my own thoughts . Thanks !
Hi guys, congrats for the channel !! Totally addicted. My question is: I'm wondering about powemeters..is more important accuracy or consistency ? I have an incredible passion for cycling but not the same money capacity so I found in internet kind of cheaper powermeter. As you always say powermeters help us to pace..so i'm not interesting in a perfect accuracy because if my REAL ftp is 400w but pwoermeter show it's 350w i think it's ok because data can also be shown as A B C but when I know my ftp then I can train/ride/race in the powerzone I need because the effort is the . Am I wrong ? Consider I only use one bike so I always refer my fit to one powermeter. Thanks guys !! #TORQUEBACK
Is there any benefit to putting an aero handlebar, like the Bontrager XXX Aero Road, on a non-aero road bike, like an Emonda, that will be used primary for group training rides and Crit races (USA style)? #torqueback
#TorqueBack - Hi from french speaking Belgium (Wallonia) ! I never tried any, and I'm not thinking about changing, but I've always thought the position a cyclist has on a recumbent bike is more effective than on a normal one. What are your thoughts on that ?
Hi, I just bought my very first bike (Entrance level, what I can afford for now) and I'm having a really hard time breaking from the hoofs on Shimano Claris levers, I even tried to pull the lever back a little bit (which made harder to reach them from the drops) but it is still hard to break from the hoofs. Is that common on cheaper components? I just can't stop the bike fast enough. #TorqueBack
I'd have to say the social side of running is much more pleasant than cycling. I get on with my club mates and riding companions, but let's face it - riders are a lot more sociopathic than runners. I blame in on the speed of getting dropped versus being gradually left behind in running.
I didn't realize that I had to calibrate my speed sensors to my wheel/tire size. I have 25mm tires on my carbon disc wheels but they measure 28.7. So should I calibrate the speed sensor for 25mm tires or for 28mm tires? #torqueback
Hi Guys, hope you can help, Iv just started using Zwift and on the settings it has a “virtual power mode” adjuster, could you explain to me what this does? Many thanx keep up the great work! #torqueback
#TorqueBack Hi GCN, I'm thinking about changing my cassette from 10/12-28 to 10/11-34 or 10/11-32. Do I need to adjust the chain length in this case? And should I change it at all (I'm new to road biking)? Thanks a lot guys, love your show!
Hey guys, love the channel! I heard that you could use baby wipes to clean your bike in a recent GCN video. Is it okay to use disinfecting wipes? #torqueback
Can you ask a nutritionalist about how a glass (not a shot ... more like a cup's worth?) of a 40% alcohol (rum, scotch) the evening before a morning ride affects the body's blood sugar and other balances? #TorqueBack I do feel as if there are negative effects during such rides, but don't know exactly what it is.
#torqueback. How do I adjust my Kicker Snap to your "perceived effort level" on screen indoor training videos? How do I find my 10?? Is that ALL OUT til you puke or is 10 something else.
Hi there, this is the first I post a question, I tried to ride everyday on a turbo trainer, and my performance each day has a huge difference, I don't have a powermeter, I can only feel it through my legs, ex. I can ride for certain amount of time for today with no problem and feel absolutely refreshed after the ride, but tmr I feel so much pain and just don't have enough energy to ride with same effort. I do I keep it consistent #torqueback
#askgcnanything I have just started doing crit racing and i was wondering which indoor training session will get me through the 40min race with out blowing my legs? My first race i got cramps on the last few laps and only just managed to finish some way behind the rest.
Hi GCN, I'm a heavy rider(116kg) but still manage to go at a decent speed. Most bike manufacturerers have a weight limit on their products. My weight presents it own challenges when choosing a bike, I'm now riding a MTB but i'm looking in to buying a road bike. I'm concerned with the strength of road bikes and would like to get one as strong as possible...Is decent road bike strong enough or would I be better of with a cyclocross bike and fit some very wide road tyres? What do you think; alloy or carbon? #TORQUEBACK
How long will hubs grease last on a trainer? I.E. no moisture or dirt. If I do considerable miles indoors on the trainer this winter, should I service the rear hub come spring? #torqueback
#AskGCN #TorqueBack Hi guys, I've realised that my hill riding is a lot better than my flat road cycling. How can you set up a turbo trainer to better replicate a flat road?
I've been training with a power meter for a few months now and am starting a VO2 max training block. From someone who used to primarily train with heart rate, is it normal that my heart rate doesn't go above threshold for the first couple intervals of say a 5x5 session? Should I only be focused on the wattage? It seems like I would be spending less time at a high heart rate but focusing more on repeating say 110% threshold power.
I would stay focused on power. It is a more reliable indicator of your effort. Average heart rate will slowly rise over the course of a session as you start to fatigue, so it is pretty normal that your HR is lower for the first few intervals. As you get fitter you will need to adjust your threshold up to ensure you are still working hard enough on the intervals to get adaption, and don't plateau.
Hi guys! Loving the channel. I am going on a diy cycling holiday after Christmas. I'll have 6 days riding in Tenerife. I was thinking about doing 4 hours riding each day in Z1/2 with some sweet spot efforts every other day. Would that be the best use of time or should I mix it up a little with higher intensity intervals? #torqueback #askgcnanything
I was recently hit by a car and will be off the bike longer than I like. What is the best way to eat so that my body can repair without putting on too much extra weight? #TorqueBack
#torqueback how many km per year does a pro ? And how many km are a good goal per year for a sport fan ... like me ?, mine now is 10.000 km combined to road to mtb to xc and indoor training is that ok?
#TORQUEBACK Hi GCN, I've been off the bike for about 4 months due to a running related knee injury. It's winter now and having gone for two smaller rides I was shocked to see that I have lost pretty much all of my endurance and strength... Where do I start coming back? And is winter a good time to return to the sport? I don't have an indoor trainer but I am a mountainbiker as well so should I go mountainbiking this winter instead?
How should I dispose the parts of my bike that wear out over time? Is there any recycling program you guys know of for this kind of used materials? #Torqueback
What happend to the trandem hour record? #TorqueBack
saving it for april 1?
It happened on the 4th August apparently, must have missed it.

That vacuum idea is brilliant. I used it on a 900 foot run of underground telephone wire. But I never thought of using for the frame. Yeah.

Any chance of a time trial training specific video or something in that ball park. Thanks. Keep up the great work.
Canyon Aeroad - best bike 2017 - IMHO, cheers and have a great 2018
Hi general comment. Did the Matt’s random attacks in Zwift..nearly die...good channel keep it up!
Salvador Herbas cheers! Keep it up!
Internal cable idea is so smart yet so simple!
Great tip on the internal cabling 👍

I think it'd be fun to see GCN fans provide a countdown.

Love the Christmas decorations.

What about 3 sessions in one day? But wait, theres more....
Can you do a video on Chinese knockoff frames vs real ones? Just for fun! And a ride test of course.

#TORQUEBACK
Dropper post on a cx bike? Sounds like one more thing to break every weekend/rebuild due to mud egress
Drop post work different muscles yay
How to avoid dead spots while riding out of the saddle?
#TorqueBack
What makes Stevens the cyclocross bike choice of so many teams? #TorqueBack
I would like to know if there is a Way to get my Hands on a Mavic Neutral Bike after a Season .
#torqueback
Please no SJW bullshit here, stay on twitter.
And "statistically" females are worse than males at every single sport.
Dear GCN,
After watching the video about waxing your chain(great video by the way) i was left with one question. Is it still necessary to lube my chain as frequently as i used to? Or is it possible to do it less or even stop doing it at all for the time that the wax is still on?
Ceramic bearings are they better than standard?
#TorqueBack i'm preparing for some long distance events next year
i wonder if there is some benefit in training for example 90km on an average pace without getting too excited and on the next 30k (120 total) doing 10 minutes blocks on flat with some rest between each at a high pace. on HR languaje 85-90%.
i see pros get on every ride 5 to 6 hours easily
thanks a lot
Do you have any useful tips for storing your kits, (jerseys, bibs, gloves, arm warmers, etc.) Mine are stored willy-nilly throughout my closet and I would like be more organized. Thanks. #Torqueback
#torqueback do you have any recommendation on best way to transport an aero bike on your car other than inside?
When training plans say Zone 2 for example, are they referring to power, heart rate or both. If both which has the significance? thanks #TorqueBack
#torqueback
What other giveaways are going to be happening
#TorqueBack - Hi from french speaking Belgium (Wallonia) ! I never tried any, and I'm not thinking about changing, but I've always thought the position a cyclist has on a recumbent bike is more effective than on a normal one. What are your thoughts on that ?
Shoot...I'm stoked when I can get in two in a week.
Did they answer the question should you train twice a day? If so a what minute is that?
#askgcn #TORQUEBACK How do you warm up before a race without tiring but warming up the muscles so you dont get an injury
I’m trying to change pedals on my bike but they are seized any suggestions #torqueback
Well it's a poison technically.
Hi GCN. Are for us(cyclists) good popular energy drinks?( e.g. before race)#TORQUEBACK
How do I keep it consistent
#askgcnanything
I have just started doing crit racing and i was wondering which indoor training session will get me through the 40min race with out blowing my legs?
And info
I was recently hit by a car and will be off the bike longer than I like. What is the best way to eat so that my body can repair without putting on too much extra weight? #TorqueBack
Re: Froome. Shock, sadness, anger, depression ... resignation
#Torqueback
HI, Joe. I bet you have a local community bike program that would love to have those parts.
love

Have any pros been outspoken about poor equipment/kit from current/previous teams? #torqueback
