    I've been playing for 40 years and I absolutely love my 2019 PRS SE. Kids today have no idea how bad cheap guitars were in 1981.

      Since CNC has been come the production norm bad guitars are not nearly as prevalent. The diminishing return gap has been greatly shored up compared to even 10 years ago.

      I actually think he would be able to whip Gibson into shape. He wore Paul down to make the SE line what it is. Look at how far it has come, we now get Paul's signature and the birds, even optional locking tuner upgrades. It's going to end up outselling the core line if it isn't already.

      I have a 245, a SE 35th Ann Custom 24 and the Hollowbody II. And am always impressed how much guitar the 245 is when I pick it up. Such a great guitar for an amazing price. Middle pickup selector, treble tone knob to zero, roll back the neck volume and you get this luscious Clapton woman tone.

    I’m a person that likes quality but don’t like paying a high premium for it. So the se line is great for me. I get a guitar that looks, feels, and sounds expensive. But it’s not breaking the bank. That is something to be grateful for. I’ve never came across another brand that guitars under $1k are consistently good besides PRS. The ability to buy a guitar sight unseen and not buying the one on the wall so you know it’s setup properly is amazing.

    I've got 2010 SE semi hallow and the guitar is awesome. If this had been the very first guitar I had ever played on I would have been very.......unimpressed by any other guitar that I own. I was unfortunately a part of the crappy guitars from the 80's and early 90's. I say this with the the knowledge of what was, a $80 Glary is a much better guitar than allot of us started out on. My first electric guitar was a boat anchor strat copy, terrible. The first I bought myself was a GTX in blue crackle, kinda want one of those again lol, but it wasn't a good guitar. Now i could make it good. The next was truly my first stage worthy guitar, Hammer Duotone. That guitar was really well built, MIK, I wish I had kept it.

    I think PRS has been really smart about this. Even their lowest priced guitar is still good enough to be used by a professional. They didn't get into the budget guitar business, but they do sell reasonably priced guitars for most people that are serious about playing. If you learned on a Squier or Epiphone, and you want to move up...a PRS SE is a quality guitar that'll be affordable.

  • @budgetguitarist
    @budgetguitarist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My S2 is my favorite guitar and I love my SE Custom 24 also. I've played several CE 24's, which sell for around 2 grand now, and they're slightly better than my SE Custom 24 made in South Korea by WMI. Slightly better for more than double the price. PRS Core is an "aspirational guitar" line just like Gibsons are these days, but PRS is still the better made instrument. Like some, I have mixed feelings about PRS moving from South Korea to Indonesia. On one hand, they can pay those workers far less money than they did in South Korea, so it's pretty much exploitation. On the other hand, what happened in South Korea (rising economy and wages) may also happen in Indonesia in the next 15 years, and that'd be a good thing, not a bad one. We'll know 15 years from now.

    • @budgetguitarist
      @budgetguitarist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the decision of Jack's to put Paul's sig on the SE headstocks was brilliant marketing. Brilliant. The Core line isn't threatened by the SE line - they're two different consumers. But I wonder about the future of the S2 line. IMHO they're still better made guitars than the SE's, but how much better, and for how long? Hmm.

    I haven't picked up a guitar for over 20 years but decided it was time. I've always been attracted to PRS guitars. So I bought two. An SE Paul's Guitar and an SE Hollowbody II. It's certainly a daunting task to try and retrain my "retarded" fingers but I'm sure gonna try. When I see an interview like this with Jack it makes me feel even better about my choices in guitars. Now it's time to get on with it.

  • @johnulrich5572
    @johnulrich5572 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I, too, started on a plywood archtop acoustic Silvertone in 1963. It was awful to play but I didn't have a frame of reference so I thought all guitars played like that. But the positive things I learned was to do my own work on the guitar to try to make it more playable and to work out chord shapes that were easier on the fingers. When I finally got my first "real" guitar it was a Fender Duo-Sonic II for $200 with case which is about $1,660 in today's money. Sweetwater is selling a PRS SE Standard for $500 right now. I can't believe the value out there for guitarists today. That $500 is the equivalent of $60 in 1963. There were no new "good" guitars available for $60 back then...I know, I was there. So we guitar players have a lot more choices in today's world. By the way, American made Fenders are cheaper today than they were 65 years ago based on inflation. Thanks, Phillip, for your insightful video.

  • @sid35gb
    @sid35gb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well I’ve never wanted to own a PRS they didn’t appeal to me I’d never played one. The videos on TH-cam of them being demoed didn’t inspire me even when my go to TH-camrs were demonstrating them. I do like Santana and I have a number of Gibson SG’s so that what I use to play his songs. Anyway I saw a pink SE and thought they’ll be going cheap because it’s not really a rock music colour, so I pulled the trigger on a Bonnie Pink PRS SE custom.
    All I can say is SE stands for “Something Extraordinary” the building quality is brilliant can’t fault it. And the tone well I’m a sucker for a bright sounding guitar. Absolutely gob smacked at how good it sounds. I understand now why there’s always endless good reviews about these guitars if this is the quality of their non top tier guitars they’re definitely doing something right.
    Is there any cons yes there are but I’m being ridiculously picky to mention them.
    1) the action was a little too high for me but that was fixed in about 5mins just lowered the saddles with 1 turn on each grub screws.
    2) the heel joint could be made a little more ergonomic. But if PRS ignores this comment it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
    Given I own multiple Gibsons and a couple of fenders PRS quite rightly deserve the middle ground between them for design but build quality is head and shoulders above them. The only drawback of that is I couldn’t imagine a PRS relic but that day will come because the guitars get played a lot.

    This guy understood that marketing is not about f#ucking people when they spend 500 to a thousand dollars /EU. That's where Fender and Gibson fail, the first one selling 600 ish guitars that still have the same issues from 50 years ago but plays great, and the other one selling over priced instruments that very few people gig anymore considering their weight and the availability of more practical instruments. PRS are very lucky to have this guy around, shout out to him!

      Destregaxy I know there’s no real way around it if I’m participating in this industry, it just seems backwards to say it like that. Like obviously the best thing to say is that the cost of manufacturing is getting too high and no one will think “oh these factory workers demand a livable wage and PRS doesn’t want to pay into that at the expensive of their profit margin so they’re going somewhere cheaper.”

    • @eckharteric

      Disco I feel like that wording might come off as unethical.

      @@eckharteric I totally understand what you mean but I guess there's no easy way to put it. It's just the consequence of business. I bet their defense would be that they're "offering jobs to the more disadvantaged economies" haha.

    Love my Korean made SE. Funny that Jack spent so long *not* disclosing what SE stands for. Since CE was supposed to be Classic Electric, SE maybe Student Electric which brands it for students only but it is playable for professionals. Or maybe Santana Edition but not wanting to brand it Santana for all versions. Not sure what S2 stands for since it's a Core and SE mixed and S2 does nothing to say that and maybe even makes it seem lower tier than SE. S2 should have been ME for Modern Electric, based on previous schemes. PRS steadfastly avoiding giving SE a proper alternate name screwed the S2 name.

    With glasses, Jack looks like a cleaner version of Stephen King. Not sure I'm adding much to the discussion there, but thought I would comment anyway. Also, minimum wage in the mid to late 80s was $3.35 per hour.

    I get why they put that message on the back of the headstock but man in terms of visuals it looks tacky. All those little markings various manufacturers put on their headstock just take away something in the feeling of the instrument. Especially the little trash can one.

      Heh yeah. That little trash can I find horrible too. I've had it on guitars that I've owned before and always hated it too.

    Crap.. the only reason the manufacturer paragraph is on the back, is so you are assured you bought a cheaper, not core model.

      It's not even a paragraph. It's like, two sentences. On the back of the headstock. Where nobody but the player and whatever techs work on it will see. So who cares how it looks?
