KOH CHANG. BANG BAO PIER THAILAND

  • Bang Bao Pier south west Koh Chang Thailand. Geoff tries out his new Canon 70D SLR Camera with mixed feelings. Sony Cybershot is much better for filming on the move. The Sony Cybershot bounces when dropped, unlike the Canon (watch what you're doing) 70D. All in all the compact camera wins for me on price and usability.

If you're a fan of Sony Geoff the A5100 would be a good choice. APSC sensor, so great for night shots, small, flippable screen so you can see yourself while talking to camera, interchangeable lenses. Doesn't have hot shoe for external mic but its big brothers the a6000 and 6300 do. The RX100's are very good too and surprisingly good at night.

Don't worry about the picture quality not been the best on this one Geoff, still a quality Vlog. Miss Koh Chang so much, your Vlogs brighten my days regardless of pic quality. Keep up the good work.

Nice one Geoff! Arms like Popeye carting that big lad about! The Canon G7x seems to be the favourite for vloggers at the moment, similar size to your Sony mate.

You should consider the DJI Osmo a bit pricey $650 US, but it shoots 4K and (more importantly) has a 3 axis handheld motorized gimble for silky smooth stable video. That's the next camera I buy for sure...

Hi Geoff as usual your content and chat make up for any camera failings , but you're spot on 70d is good studio cam but not v good for roving vloggers . Your cybershot is great - have recently invested in dji Osmo myself - quality v good upto 4k, fixed focus all sharp no drifting out of focus, lightweight and it's killer feature stabilised on a mini gimbal so v smooth when walking - only downside internal mic is crap but has an external mic socket so plug in cheap clip on lav mic and you've got pro sound. Having said all that bang for buck you're cybershot takes some beating - the Osmo is in the £450 mark, the upgrades over the Sony would be some improvement on picture quality, better in low light, very smooth for walking / movement and with a cheap plug in lav mic better clearer commentary sound - it's one you might want to check out in the future - anyway for now your personality and the Sony are the winning combination - cheers Geoff keep up the good work.

lol...great minds think alike. Just recommended the Osmo to Geoff as well, going to be my next camera. I think it's the perfect camera for Geoff's run & gun shooting style...

the panasonic gh4 is awesome but its little brother the g7 is cheaper and lighter. another good small camera is the sony a5100 (but it overheats sometimes). both will make pretty nice video. the dji osmo is a small cam on a stabilizing arm andmakes walkabout video damn smooth. I think I'd go for an osmo.

Think you'd have a better day on the boat trip but might have dropped the camera . Nearly every vloger on the net seems to switching to cannon though not 70d . Nearly all first outings are a bit wobbly till people get used to the weight . Maybe give it another go or two . Though it does seem the 70d is impractical for your style of shoot

+GEOFF CARTER Hey Geoff, Sony's newer mirrorless camera's are known for overheating while doing video. We all know how hot Thailand can get and that doesn't help lol. I'm using a Panasonic Gx8 right now which I love.

First time I tried seriously vlogging in Thailand years ago, I brought a Panasonic G2 (interchangeable lens micro four thirds camera only slightly smaller than your 70D), and found it too unwieldy, drew too much attention (imagine a camera the size of a DSLR that was bright BLUE), and had worse image stabilization than my point & shoots. Saw NO improvement in my videos from it. In order to properly use these big cameras they need to be stationary on a tripod, and/or you would need a dedicated cameraman. Mark Weins (the Bangkok based food vlogger) uses a DLSR with great effect, but his wife acts as camera operator or he has it on a tripod; that said, his style is WAY different than yours, not as personal feeling, his stuff feels a bit more scripted...anyhow...
