    My uncle had one of these and I inherited it when he passed. The electric motor self destructed on it so I had to buy another to fix it. so far so good.

      Yes, Tyco's PowerTorque motors do have a habit of burning-out. Glad to hear that the restoration process is going well!

      @@RPModelRailroads the most annoying part is that I cannot get the motor to stop squealing like a pig. I have tried oil, then grease. Nothing

      @RPModelRailroads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retr0bits545 Hmmm, it is possible that hair or other debris could have wound around the drive shaft under the pinion "drive" gear. Have you tried cleaning behind the main pinion gear? If that doesn't work, the squealing could be coming from the brushes.

      @retr0bits545 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RPModelRailroads checked that, and I do not want to take it apart as for some reason after running it for 10 minutes the screeching stops entirely. That is unless I wait several hours and I must run it again

    • @RPModelRailroads
      @RPModelRailroads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retr0bits545 That sounds like it is coming from the pinion gear then. Normally if the screeching persists endlessly, than it could be due to dirty brushes, but as you said it stops after some time, than the pinion gear and/or drive shaft may be defective.

    Oh my Lord that brings back a lot of memories I had that exact train and several of those other Tyco kits like the cattle ramp and truck also the piggyback terminal the crane car xcetera the only thing that I'll always never understand was that the Chattanooga Choo Choo was a 2-8-0 steamer yet they gave it a modern caboose instead of an old-time caboose which really never made any sense to me but man did this bring back memories thanks for posting that I still wish I had a lot of this stuff.

      Thank you very much for the comment, and I'm so glad this video brought back Tyco Train memories for you. :)

      @@RPModelRailroads yes when I was a little kid, my father had gotten me the Chattanooga Choo Choo Tyco set as a Christmas gift. And several of the Tyco buildings, and scene kits to make a model railroad. He and I ran that train for a long time. However by they time I was in high school. I had lost interest in it and everything was given away. Recently after losing my parents
      I have been remembering that old train. And think of my father when ever I see one. I hope one day to run across it again and be able to get one again to run around my Christmas tree to remember that special Christmas my father had given me when I was a little boy.

      @@RPModelRailroads only problem with eBay is that as soon as you make a bid on something someone automatically tries to start making it higher to see how much they can get out of you I tried to but on a Chattanooga Choo Choo one time it was down at a really low price and I placed like a $5 bid the next thing I know somebody want of having it way up over two hundred bucks and I was like no way

    Man this guy's got Tycho City look at all the tyco's I hope I see you have a lot of good precision tools to work on these because I can't keep them running and I've been around them all my life and I'm 50

    • @RPModelRailroads
      @RPModelRailroads  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LOL, yep, RETRO TYCO is 99% TYCO (only the railroad track and slot track are not TYCO.) Actually, I don't really use any precision tools....I just use Liberty Oil to lubricate the PT motors and Goody's Hairbands as traction tires. All of my TYCO trains feature their original motors.

    Such a nicely-designed locomotive. Too bad it had to use that crummy tender-drive pancake motor...
    Neat use of vintage brass track. I prefer to use nickel-silver track myself; even older locomotives run noticeably better on nickel-silver than brass! I do also run a lot of old TYCO freight cars on my layout, though I've upgraded virtually all of them with knuckle couplers.

    • @RPModelRailroads
      @RPModelRailroads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, Tyco did such a nice job on the design of their 2-8-0 "Consolidation" steam locos. Unfortunately, all of them came with the PT motor, which has its issues. Nickel-silver track is cool, and I use it on my N-Scale Alpine Railway layout, but for HO-Scale, there is just nothing like good old brass track.

    • @ZakWolf
      @ZakWolf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RPModelRailroads Yeah, I read how that PowerTorque motor was a big part in the demise of TYCO's model train line. The Kader-made pancake motors in the older Bachmann and Life-Like locomotives were even somewhat better than PowerTorque!

    • @RPModelRailroads
      @RPModelRailroads  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZakWolf Yes, well Tyco introduced the PT motor after it was bought out by Consolidated Foods in the early 1970's. Although the idea was good, it wasn't well executed, as the main 2 problems of the PowerTorque motor is either burning out or popping the pinion gear off the drive shaft. Luckily the latter is fairly easy to fix, but still, nothing compared to Bachmann motors of the time (granted, I hear that Bachmann motors faced broken gear problems) or LifeLike (which was the best out of the 3 in my opinion.)

      No...I don't know actually. From what I do know, you need the special steam oil that TYCO produced for their steam trains, in order for it work properly.
