What kind of lightsource do you use for the light painting?

It's a flashlight with a diffuser of my own design… For lots of information on my lighting tools and other things, please go to:

Bought your adaptors, wish you did tutes on line for us folk in Australia who will never be able to make it to your side of the globe, would gladly pay heaps for your tuition. BTW,the torch modifiers took only 3 1/2 weeks to reach me ,even when there are very few flights currently entering Australia. Hope stay healthy in the States as we see disturbing reports from over there. All the best for the New Year.

You are really a master. I have been trying to refine my light painting but until I came across your videos, I could not understand how to soften and control the light. I unfortunately don't have the time or the resources to travel up North to attend a workshop, so these videos are my only accress to your instructional technique. Thank you for all of your artistic generosity in sharing your knowledge and years of experience! Warm Regards, Flo

Hi Flo, I'm glad that my videos can help you in your light painting :-) I am going to be releasing a more in depth series of videos (for sale) in the not-so-distant future. They will be short, concise and at the same time quite helpful!
Thanks again for your kind comments:-)

Harold Ross i just bought the wand, adapter and diffusers. I am going to do light painting for my final project in class. Went back to school for my 60th bday and you are a real inspiration. I took up light painting because with work and doing all of my chores, I never get out during the day to photograph anymore. Light painting provides me with a great opportunity to keep pursuing photography in an environment that accommodates my schedule. I’m really looking forward to getting the swag I ordered from you!

StudioInColor Thanks! I️ think you will enjoy using them. Just remember to always think about skimming the light. This will help you light from a “better“ angle. Lighting from the camera view point is never good, except for fill lighting; from the sides is always better, and it is better to light from the upper right or upper left, depending on whether you are left-handed or right-handed. Remember that motion softens the light, so move the light to move the shadows.

For those of us that live too far away to take a live course and already have a solid background in photography, thie video series is a great idea. Sometimes you just need to know the nuts and bolts, practice the fundamentals and then take off creatively and find your own style. It's almost impossible to get foundational training that's afforable and self paced in this subject so I look forward to hearing more about this!

Hi Harold, Great tutorial. How do you determine how long to keep the light on a certain area ? Thanks for your help.

Hi there, thank you. It’s really just a simple matter of exposure. Exposure is a technical thing, not an aesthetic thing, and so it is solved by simple mathematics. The simple way to put it though, is that you shoot a capture for a certain number of seconds, and then you determine if the exposure is over exposed or under exposed, and then you compensate. That is one big advantage of using a tethering software (I use Capture One)where you can use the exposure slider as “the worlds best light meter“. There are many variables of course; ISO, aperture, brightness of the flashlight, distance of the light to the subject. All of these things affect the exposure.
