Reached the right order in the end. I’m an MVG fan but he will need to bump up his overall titles to be near Taylor although his averages are challenging him.
Mardle is so full of crap. He dismisses Bristow, Wilson and Lowe because they supposedly played in a weak era, but then touts Martin Adams, who only won three BDO titles after Barney and most of the other good players had switched to the PDC.
He also still seems bitter that Taylor battered him so many occasions.

It's such a hard question. It's more a question of who are the 5 greatest World Champion players of all time. As far as major titles are concerned, James Wade for example must feature as one of the greatest of all time.
Regarding averages, what the panel didn't mention is the advances in board technology like larger trebles, no staples and bladed wire - imagine the records that Taylor would have smashed while in the late 90's early 2000's! And Bristow was cut short with his dartitis. Is MvG a top player - no doubt - but he's not as consistent or dominant as Taylor or Bristow were in their respective era's

@@michaelwalsh5984 Wade has won so much more than Part plus the H-H record is embarrassingly titled in Wade's favor at 16-2. Wade also has far more scoring power than Part and I think that's proven by the fact Wade has hit multiple 9-darters in his career and averaged 104, 105, 106, even up to 111 quite a few times in Major Premier League, Matchplay matches, etc. Part rarely did that. The only thing Part has in his favor is the world title - yes that's huge but not big enough IMO, to overtake Wade's numerous achievements and talent.
Those top four I agree with but replace Anderson with Lowe. They are both great but I believe Lowe is slightly better.
Taylor is not better than MVG nice try though.

alex zandberg I understand that he can be considered the most talented. Personally I believe Phil was the best, and Michael is the best now. However, Gary Anderson is, in my eyes and many others, the most *naturally* talented. Even with MvG, there is a good bit of manufactured talent there. His throw and stance has changed a bit over the years to make him better, but with Gary, those changes weren't necessary. Not only does Gary have the most natural, unchanging throw, he also has that in stance. There is no doubt about it, MvG is the most talented person to ever pick up a dart, but Gary is more natural and unchanging.

What is not mentioned in this video, but has been stated by Taylor himself is the fact that Bristow already had a long career before he won his first world title. He won everything there was to win in the unofficial circuit as a teenager, long before hed did as an adult professional. Also I believe his dartitus prevented him from winning about two more titels

Eric was ahead of his time and he put darts on the map in his era, he spotted Phil Taylor and backed him and Phil was the best of his era, then came MVG. In my opinion Taylor is the greatest, then Eric Bristow and then MVG but MVG has time on his side. John Lowe and Jockey Wilson and of Course Barney and Martin Adams are there abouts along with Dennis Priestly and Steve Beaton (for his longevity)

You could argue a case for all three being the greatest. I think MvG is the best player of all three, but he won't win as much as Taylor and without Bristow there is no Taylor.
What about Adrian Lewis rough talent wise? He belongs in that list purely on ability I would say.
Half the time he gets involved in those tour incidents threatening players if things don't go his way...

It is but on the lowe subject john was still very good up to about mid 2000s, he had a cracking match with taylor at 2002 matchplay had taylor in trouble for most of it.
It's hard to compare though because nowadays the equipment is more advanced back then you had thicker wires on the boards, bigger barrells on darts etc obviously it's way more professional now the players are playing way more tournaments so naturally the standard is going to be a lot better anyway just like every sport it improves due to advanced technology.

Well if you look at say priestley he finish at 63 in the top 16 .then look at your mardles, bristow, Harrington, warrner pa ter , harringtons , these finished in there 30s early 40s so all im saying is what priestley and lowe did to carry on and have long successful careers, was protu special. I agree with Wayne Mardle's assessment, besides world championships as criteria look at majors titles of taylor vs van gerwyn.
All sports evolve nd get better over years. playing conditions, kit nd accessories is improved nd the players adapt nd improve there after.. Zidanne,, Messi nd Ronaldo are better players to watch than Pele, Best nd Marradonna but imagine the Latter 3 with the Advanced Accesoories nd rule changes that the 1st 3 had over there playing carreers.. you can only be as good as what is around you at the time.. Same applies to Golf, tennis, Snooker nd Rugby of the 70s ,80s 90s in comparison to now... im convinced that if MVG came along in the early 2000s with a better game than taylors.. phil would of Analysed why nd improved Past Michael. The Power was a Monster winner, A friek of a competitor Over 3 decades who can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Jack Nicklaus nd Federer in there more fashionable sports.. Based on his entire career I rate Taylor the number one, but based on everyone playing at their absolute best I think MvG would beat him. His top is almost faultless.

The problems with these lists are the fact that Eric Bristol and John Lowe and the like on pure talent ability averages etc would struggle to beat any top 16/32 player of today I’ve looked into this at great length bad please correct me if I’m wrong but Eric bristows highest ever recorded average was 101 , that’s just an average day at the office for at least the top 16 , so I think the question should be who are the 5 most iconic / influential / best players , other wise for example if you were to ask the best 16 players on pure averages / ability of all time apart from Taylor and Barney you would just read out the top 16 in the current order of merit
Ive thought of this but not every tournament win takes extreme high averages and erics A game from back then could win some tournaments even now, also his mind games would rile many players up and work for him.

In no universe was Eric Bristow a better player Van Gerwen. I love Eric but that is nonsense. Taylor or MVG is debatable but they are streets ahead of the rest in my opinion.
I think that too big gulf between them 2 and rest, the debate who the other 3 in top 5 are is a good one though im not sure on it myself.
Eric Bristow eclipses MVG by such a large gap that I suspect MVG will never close unless he plays for as long as Eric This comment must be by a non darts player

@@stevewood238 I have always thought Wade was an Interesting one to rank.I would probably have him lower end of top 10 overall he's very good but I don't think his peak level is as high as the others but the main thing against him so far is not winning a world title but at one point between 2007-2012 he was at his peak imo and he has 9 major titles on his record ..Lewis as it stands would probably be rated above Wade due to his world title wins despite winning less big events overall and not having as much consistancy.

Did MVG buckle against Wright in the world final? He wasn't scoring high enough and was just fragile towards the world. Wright wouldn't swap his title for anything to be top five l am sure. Would Wright be top ten due to his twilight win?

Lowe is just outside with Wilson close as well. Priestley's domination was too short. Lewis has been too inconsistent and Gary Anderson was an embarrassment in the BDO world darts championships losing to unknown players.
I would disagree on part love him as a player but he didnt win all that much despite winning 3 world titles, and the bdo one was pretty woefull in 94 just after the split, anderson is a better player for me he took his time yes but made up for it.
I think Part may be a bit over-rated. First world championship was BDO after big boys split to PDC. ....3rd title was against a very ill Wade then Kirk Sheppard in final. The one against Phil was absolutely fantastic. ....but look at his 3-dart averages. Not comparable to the rest of the legends mentioned here.
