I recently realized that it's also necessary to spend a bit of time to reframe the problem to remove the resentment around it. Then, the 1000 times strategy will not be torture and will work.

Astute observation as always! Every perspective is a perspective and when you change your reference point, it transforms.

second advice is non-terminating algorithm which implies bad advice. e.g "do your best" is pretty bad adivce. "best" given what?.
Adding metrics of evaluation will convert it to terminating algorithm.
Simple mistake of problem solving is to solve non-binary problem (binary problem is when solution is either right or wrong) without knowing that solution falls within a continuous range.

What I was saying (or at least trying to say) is - you've been smoking for 15 years and you want to quit. You enter the realm of quitting and you enter with the commitment of being ready to face the urge a thousand times, for a thousand days - not when it's just convenient, not only on days you feel good, etc. If you can enter the commitment with yourself with that gravity, you can move the inertia of long standing habits is all. I think the non termination is implied simply because everything you do has a CHANCE to incur karma but nothing is guaranteed - e.g. i write this comment and there's a chance you read it and a chance you don't. Everything is subject to change. The commitment of 1000 is a practice that is a solid guideline given the ever changing and variable situation.

As you begin your 1000 tries, know that failures aren't wasted time. And not in the simple sense of just learning "what doesn't work". You are building your strength and comfort with striving for something that might not pan out. If you don't invest anything, you'll never solve it. That's obvious. But the problem's too big and will take more than you have? So lower your standards 1000x and start building your strength.
Ok finding a romantic partner is too hard. Can you say one thing you're nervous about into the mirror? Oh my god that made me feel so much and now I need to hide in bed and blah blah blah. But now next week you do that again and the entire emotional reaction happens again, but hey, you recognize it this time. The third time you do it you know what to expect and yes it happens again but wait, that's actually what you expected.
Assume it's gonna take 10 years, but it's inevitable if you keep trying because *you will become more comfortable with trying*!!!
Be forgiving with yourself during this time. Don't hate your coping mechanisms either. They are imperfect ways of regulating yourself which have downsides. But for now, they're all you've got. Take what you've got, no matter how meager, and build it into slightly more.
