    This video seriously helped with setting up my squier jazzmaster! Mine somehow had a decent height on the bridge, which I found odd, but added a shim anyway. Thanks for the help Jimmy!

    Good work Jimmy. Part of the early sound of the JM was due to the lower bridge breakover. I mentioned my 60's has a shallow angle. No bridge problems with 10's (originally 11's). Some guys that played hard back in the day would deepen and polish the bridge string gutters by a few thousandths to prevent string popping out. Just a thought. Thanks!!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks John! Yes, part of the appeal is of course the jingle and overtones from the break over! This also gave me the action I was looking for. So far, no string hopping, but I have a lighter touch and this has the Mustang bridge, so should be good to go! Appreciate your stopping in and watching....😎👍

    I got a Sunburst one of these and it was in pretty much the same condition as yours. The main problem for me was the condition of the neck - very dry an dirty and the frets were as scratchy as I have ever experienced. Also, the wood had a couple of imperfections in it. Once cleaned and smoothed it is fine. The intonation was pretty accurate, but the bridge was flat on the floor. Had to use my own Allan key as my guitar did not come with one for the bridge. So, not much there. The tuners were very good. I didn't shim the neck. I play Blues, so no heavy strumming or tremelo and it works fine for me. In the end a very playable guitar. Great looking and most importantly great sounding guitar.

    Good job Jimmy, I had to do exactly the same thing with my CV 60s Jazzmaster. I also put electrical tape around the bridge poles to reduce the floating on the bridge, holds tune better. Once setup they do sound sweet 👍🎸🇬🇧

    Nice! You did a great job setting it up Jimmy. Glad to see that you were able to get everything in order with relative ease. Those precut shims seem like a real time saver to be honest. I imagine there'd be a lot of screwing and un-screwing of the neck and playing around with various shims if you were trying to make one yourself.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, though the Stewmac shims are a bit pricey, they are very well made and are well worth the price for your time in my opinion. Trying to make a proper fitting wooden shim correctly, even with the proper tools is time consuming.

    Not a big jazzmaster fan but I really enjoy finding good inexpensive Amazon guitars. I was watching a Michael Angelo Batio video and it seems he's working with Sawtooth Guitars. Never had a Sawtooth before but I really liked the look of the flat black ST-M24 he was using so I ordered one and it arrived last week. Very nice guitar with high output humbuckers (they now sell a version with Seymour Duncans) and good hardware. I blacked mine out with black knobs, switch tip, bridge and a set of black locking tuners. It's a nice light guitar for jamming 80's and 90's classic rock with the boys as I prefer standing when I'm playing. Overall very pleased with it.

    Using the fret rocker up the center of the fretboard, doesn’t tell you if there is any sprout along the edges, which can happen. Shimming the neck just reduces the amount of contact the neck has with the pocket, better to sand the pocket flat, getting rid of any surplus paint that might have gotten in there. I like to sand the back of the neck heel flat as well enabling the best possible vibration transfer. Usually after doing this, you can feel the whole guitar come alive. As for shallow break angle, that’s only a problem if you are a heavy handed player, most of the time it makes the guitar feel more slinky. Getting rid of excess neck relief will allow the bridge to come up a bit, if that’s really necessary. One of the best things you can do with a new guitar, is open it up, and clean out all of the residual cutting compound and polish that’s usually in there. The other important thing to do, is make all of your adjustments in the playing position, it’s amazing how many people intonate a guitar while it’s lying down. It’s interesting how if you tune a guitar while in the normal playing position, then tilt it backward, the note will go sharp, and vice versa if you tilt it forward. So many things to consider. I’ll usually re do the intonations after adjusting the pickups, as they can have an effect on the overtones and harmonics that come from the plucked string. Then check it again after the strings have been played for a few hours. Lots of work.

      Well, yes in a way. The two most popular bass guitars from Fender are the Fender Jazz Bass and the Fender Precision Bass.
      Both are made in the Squier line as well. I own two Fender Precision basses from 1976/1977 myself. Excellent bass guitars and iconic in music production since the very beginning of bringing the bass from the “standup” version to the electric bass guitar version. I don’t own a Squier version, but would expect them to be of the same quality as their 6 string guitars with different “tiers”. Their line basically starts with their “Bullet” line, then Affinity, the Classic Vibe/Paranormal. Good luck in your journey!! 🎸👍

    Just bought a CV Jazzmaster 60's in Seafoam Green. Fully expected to do some work on it before I even bought it. They are quirky instruments and playing one straight out of the box ain't going to happen unless you play basic cowboy chords. I plan on the Stew Mac shim and a Staytrem bridge along with some fret leveling/polishing. But it's all good if you like tinkering with guitars. You set up yours perfectly and it sounds great.

I upgrade the guitar with a real Fender locking tremolo and a roller to add tension on the strings, I replaced the electronic with CTS pots and Switchcraft switch and this thing is just superb!! Hey, Jimmy! I am new to your channel, but want to say that is an excellent demo, suh! I've bookmarked the channel and will be returning. In the past, I've had lousy luck with Squier and Epi, but in recent years they've made great strides. I'm especially happy with the CVs! Sometimes they're perfect right out of the box, occasionally a little TLC is needed to bring them into focus, as you've done here. As Phil McKnight has noted, with affordable CNC, geography is no longer a factor in guitar making. Indonesia may be the new Japan! Rawk on!

In my initial review of this guitar (which I titled “I Swore I Would Never Buy One….Then I Did”) I realized the same thing…that the Squier CV Series was different, along with their new Contemporary and Paranormal Series of guitars. The Jazzmaster has always been a bit of a difficult animal to tame, so knowing this going in made it less frustrating and more fun! Yes, CNC has upped the game, and even smaller plants and manufacturers are putting out some pretty amazing instruments for very reasonable prices! Merci Sir Jimmy pour l’intérêt que vous avez pour la Squier Classic Vibe 60’s Jazzmaster ! J’attends la mienne cette semaine… Une des dernières disponibles en France. Une Sunburst, 3 colors. I must admit that I DO LOVE P90’s and I DO ADORE this guitar for a long ago… Superbe et longue vidéo que j’ai regardée du début à la fin. Your pedalboard me semble quelque peu chargé. Is’nt it ? «Quand le ‘background noise’ est trop fort, il est temps de retourner à un jeu acoustique», as said my recently deceased elder Brother, with which we together have built guitars. LOVE guitars. I Know all the ‘problems’ a real Jazzmaster… Change strings 11>52, the bridge with its sharp edges, etc…,
    PS: What this spacer piece to put under the neck mount ? I’m a curious french man ! Pléonasme !

      You should truly enjoy it and congrats on getting one of the last ones in France! 🇫🇷
      Sorry to hear about your older brother…my condolences! My recommendation to this video was just in case you have some issues, but evidently having built some guitars in the past, you should be just fine In getting yours in tip-top playing condition. My pedal board is actually two tied together, so yes it is pretty “loaded” but normally one is studio use, and the other is “live” gig ready. The “spacer” you refer to is just a “shim” that I used in the neck pocket to adjust the angle and allow better break angle to the bridge as I prefer using lighter gauge strings and wanted 9’s/46’s on this guitar. Congrats and enjoy yours! The sunburst sounds lovely. Be sure to stop back and let me know how you like it once you receive it, ok? 🙏🎸👍

    Hey btw it might just be the way the video made it sound or the way you played it personally but if I'm not mistaken imo it sounds like your trem spring setup is a bit too tough and recommend loosening it to have a better outcome on the strings sounding and playing and tuning etc. It shouldn't be needing really any pressure to do even a decent chunk of changes in your tuning and should feel very flexible and fluid without much pressure that if we had the original locks on the bridges like the true fenders do you'd be able to get the perfect pitch/tilt on the trem tension but we don't so basically think of having it in the middle the best of your ability w>th just eyesight with what we got.

      Hi Ivan….the low E string should not be sitting on the saddle adjustment screw? If the saddle is loose, or needs adjusting, you need a small Allen key (hex key/torx key) to adjust. Not sure of the size at this moment, but it’s small and should have been included with your guitar. Hope this helps….thanks for stopping into the channel! 🎸👍

      @@JimmyStewart1 Since finding the OS40 DLX or CNZ jazzmaster has proven to be all but impossible, Jimmy, I ended up going with The J Mascis Squier. It's pretty much the same guitar as you've got here, save for the trem has been moved slightly higher to sort out the tuning stability issues of the past and actual P 90s but voiced hotter, since it's an artist model.
      Got it used on the cheap, and the kid I got it from tried to mod it, but badly done. One thing he did get right is removing that ugly gold anodised pickguard that all the J Mascis models have and added a red tortoise shell, so mine now looks just like yours, thankfully. Once those issues are sorted, it's going to be a damned nice guitar.

      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much for watching and the kind comments Payton Cinema! It’s truly appreciated! The “card” I have is a Barouque Stringed Instrument Measuring Gauge/Ruler.
      You can pick them up on Amazon, or most any guitar shop. It allows you to measure (with scale) string height, bridge saddle height, saddle slot depth, pickup polepiece height, etc. Very useful if you do your own setups. As far as your new Jazzmaster, I would wait until you receive your guitar before doing anything. Play it and let it acclimate to your location/environment before attempting to set it up. You can do the “basics” for setup if needed with the included tools for adjusting the bridge, truss rod and such.
      If you prefer heavier gauge strings for more of a “Jazz style” of play, you may be fine with just a string change, fretboard cleaning and a little tweaking on the action. If you are going with a lighter gauge string, then you may have a bit more to do, depending on the action you like. You can get a decent luthiers kit with all the items you may need, including the ruler, files, fret protectors, sand paper, nut files, etc. They are fairly inexpensive and will do the job. If you decide or need to shim…don’t cheap out on that. Use a full neck pocket shim (or make one if you are a glutton for punishment) from StewMack.
      I use D’Addario strings on all my guitars, and I play 9-42’s. These are a “fairly” light gauge string, but it really depends on your style. If you are a “newer” player, a lighter gauge string will be a bit easier on your fingers, but some people have a tough time with them, as you need a “lighter” touch. If you are going to be “bashing”, you would probably be better off with a heavier gauge, say 10’s or 11’s. Hope that helps a bit…
      Thanks again for stopping in to the channel, hope to see you around more, and good luck with your new Jazzmaster! 👍

    Nice job man! I have the same guitar and its great, but when I bend high e string about where 16th fret is, note becomes dead pretty quickly. Raising bridge fixes this problem, but string action on that area now is too high for me. Will neck shim fix it?

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes!! Same issue I was having...you need to get the bridge up, and then enough break angle at the bridge to the nut. A shim will do it...

    Love the video jimmy! I just got the same jazzmaster as yours a couple of days ago except in sonic blue. I ordered the neck shims from stewmac as well and was wondering what the benefits of a shim for an offset is? I’m new to the offset world so I’m excited to see where it goes!! Thank you again for the great video buddy 🙂

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The benefit comes in by increasing the break angle of the strings on the bridge and helping hold those strings in the bridge saddles tighter without jumping out. This also allows you more tension when using lighter gauge strings so you can raise the bridge up off the body. The neck shim will allow you to also get closer action once you raise the bridge, keeping a good brake angle to the bridge. These guitars were designed by Leo for jazz players playing a heavier gauge string back in the day. Hope that helps explain a bit more!

So I can’t wait for the shim to get here. By the way one more quick question, the screw that controls the tremolo bar to loosen or tighten, does it matter if the bar sits higher or lower? My pleasure Emma radio…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Congrats on your new Jazzmaster! Yes…the string “overtones” coming from behind the bridge is what gives the Jazzmaster it unique characteristics. You could use dampening to deaden it if you prefer, but I (along with many others) enjoy that character in the Jazzmaster, much like the old school arch top jazz guitars! A strip of Velcro around those strings between the bridge and tremolo will dampen the overtones out should you prefer not to hear them. Truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and hope to see you around more! Congrats once again on your new Jazzmaster! 👍🎸

      Hi SURFTRASH…thanks for watching and commenting. If I recall, it’s a 1.5mm. (very small) It’s best to loosen your strings before adjusting to help loosen some tension before adjusting them as it helps to keep from stripping. Once you have it where you want it, you can either locktite the pins in place, or do like I did and wrap in Teflon plumbers tape to keep them from turning back down. Hope that helps! As always great video Jimmy! Thanks for the detailed video. I learned about shimming & bridge break. Quick question; I have an Epiphone Slash AFD & was wondering if the same bridge break height applies? Last week I was saying that I didn't like the JM but now that you have it all set up, I'm really liking the sounds coming from it. You changed my mind. I really like the sound of the pu's & the look of the guitar is growing on me. I have my Gretsch G2210 Streamliner Junior Jet on the way. The next guitar that I buy may very well end up being a JM. With my Epiphone, Monoprice Tele, Gretsch, Breedlove Acoustic & (maybe) JM, I would have a collection of guitars that would cover many styles of music. Take care and keep up the great work!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Epiphone you mention is a LP style guitar, correct? I believe you have a ToM type bridge with a stop piece. Is it a bolt on neck? Are you having a issue with strings popping out of the saddles? High action that you can not correct by bridge height adjustment? Nut slots cut correctly? Truss rod adjustment? Intonation?
      It’s really hard to say..if the neck is a bolt on style, then shimming could be the answer, but I would check all other avenues first.
      You have a good guitar arsenal building up...😎. Let me know how you like that Gretsch when you get it...

      Is the bridge sitting on the body of the guitar, or can you raise it up a bit? If you can raise it a bit, I would try that first, then re-adjust your action (truss rod adjustment after raising the bridge to give you a idea of string height) then try and see where your intonation is. You can reverse the bridge saddles, or even the entire bridge if needed.
      I would only cut the springs as a last resort. If you can’t get the action/neck and intonation set properly, then you can try to go with a shim.

      Thanks for watching and commenting! In your case, I would try and make up a shim. It will take some work, but doable. I would try and make it a full pocket shim. On mine, I used a .50mm full pocket shim. The .50mm measurement is at the body/heal joint of the neck pocket, then gradually recedes down to about the width of a couple mm.
      You could also probably use playing cards/business cards cut to proper height and width. Good luck in your project, and be sure to get that bridge “up” off the body for proper break angle on the strings/bridge and shim to correct string height on the fretboard. 👍

Thank you
    Btw I subbed and liked the video, like your process of working on the guitars in this video setup its not cut short and edited just the full raw footage with 2 angles, my favorite as a fellow decent self taught guitar tech myself :)
    Btw I have the entire inner vintage coppershielding for jazzmasters that was planned for a jazzmaster when I got myown one day but it hasn't happened yet 7 years since from lots of shit and long story short will probably not happen even 3 years from now if I'm lucky to even get any new gear again even by then... but anyways all the parts are still in the packaging individually from fender Japan as they are all genuine mij 60s jazzmaster copper shielding parts except the largest cavity that holds the input jack and the main 2 pots just below the bridge which is possibly a vintage one ripped from a 70s-90s jazzmaster but was supposed to be a brand new one in packaging like the thumbnail they used made it appear to be, so it's a bit sorta rustic like around it at parts but is still fully functional (and damn well better be as it alone was 60 bucks by its self lol! You cant buy then altogether for the jazz but can with the jag which was 240 bucks but I lost that losing my vm jag I at least kept the mute system I have now to use for my current jag now (its 80 bucks alone, fender parts are pricey and that was back in 2017! It's probably wayyyy more now)
    Anyways sorry for the rambling. . Don't have any buds to play with and enjoy sharing guitar talk with and is just cool to share this info in detail knowing all you folks will actually understand everything fully and maybe even have something to say to it Or possibly be able to do a project together now because I went out of my way to share all these little details that who knows maybe they are in in of the jazz parts and would be able to help my mute project routing and do a trade for a pedal or buy off me if ifeel it's a fair deal.

      Yeah…nature of the beast…😎
      Once done however, a great guitar. Not really that tough to do. The idea is to raise the neck a bit with the shim so you can then raise the bridge to get the proper break angle and still keep the action low for comfortable playing and the strings in their saddles, especially if you use light gauge strings like I do. If you are having string buzz, then the action is too low. You need to raise the bridge, and with a shim you can then have plenty of adjustment “up” to dial it in. Good luck and give it a try!! If you like heavier gauge you may have enough room to slightly lift the bridge pins up, and perhaps a small tweak of the truss to get rid of any buzz…

If not, decide what you believe it needs. If you normally play a heavier gauge string, then great. If you like a lighter gauge, then try them and see what you think. You may/may not have to adjust to your playing style.

    Hi Jimmy which one do you like better,the IYV mustang or this classes vibe, I myself don't care for P90s, although these sounds pretty good,too high of an output for my taste and they seem noisey, I have a firefly tele with P90s,and I'm thinking of dropping some mini humbuckers in place of them,boy what a pain it was getting the tele dialed in,fret sprout was rediculous, neck angle needed a shim too, I should of went with the IYV spalted maple that you purchased, what kind of a neck profile does it have,the firefly is a baseball bat,and I'm definitely going to change it to my preference maple, that is if I can find one as wide enough,any suggestions it appears to be 58-60mm,sorry I bombarded you with so many questions,but we seem to on the same wavelength when it comes to guitars, thanks brother.

      I like P90’s so my preferences are of course different. I like the IYV Mustang but different animal as opposed to this Jazzmaster. This actually does not have P90’s in it but the Fender Branded Jazzmaster pups…similar, but different. I also have the FF FFPTH with dual P90's...i didn't think the neck fat on that at all. The IYV mustang fretboard is wider and flatter then the FF with this Jazzmaster being a bit in between. I like them all really!! For the $$ though it's tough to beat that IYV mustang if you like single coils and offset short scale guitars!! No sprout or bad frets on any of mine, including the FF. The spalted Tele is a fairly shallow C with a standard “Asian neck” radius at just under 14” It’s pretty flat…

      It is very small, I believe it to be a 1.5 mm. You should have got a small black pouch with the guitar (if new) with the hex for the truss and bridge adjustments. You can also adjust without the hex key by loosening the strings and adjusting the pins by hand. Once you have them where you want them, just tape them down and your good to go! Hope this helps!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That really depends on your playing style and the individual guitar. I think if you play heavy gauge, and the guitar feels right to you, keeps tune and intonation, then you are golden! The key is having a good break angle between the strings and bridge so you can retain some of those string overtones behind the bridge that makes the Jazzmaster a Jazzmaster without those strings jumping the saddles. Hope that helps…if it’s not broke…😎

Just check your current tuners to check length (should be metric) and where the screws are mounted to match up. This saves you having to re-drill holes (hopefully). You should be able to find something that will be a drop in replacement, but again not owning a Donner, I can’t tell you what would be a “drop in” replacement. • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it really depends on style of play, and how you want the action set, string gauge, ect…I wanted this setup for “light strings”, and I do a lot of bending…so I wanted the action low, with light gauge strings, and really to achieve that, I had to shim to get the better break angle on the bridge. Your mileage will certainly vary, depending on your personal preferences as I stated. You could be perfectly fine out of the box…I wouldn’t let the possible shimming of the neck scare you off. Hi Jimmy. Thanks for this. I have this exact same guitar. Just got it. I like it but it’s got a bad ground somewhere. To take advantage of the warranty I’d have to send it back halfway across Canada. Ughh. If I take that bridge off will I blow the set up on the thing? It doesn’t seem bad to me( I know nothing about these type of guitars) I have ordered a shim pack btw. Anyway do you have any quick advice? Should the ground be right there under the bridge soldered there? I haven’t taken it apart because I was waiting for the seller to get back to me. Surprise they say send it back. I mean their cost and all but yechhh

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and commenting Dean. If you touch the metal parts of the guitar, (bridge, tone/volume knobs, trem bar) does the noise go away? If so, then you probably do have a grounding issue somewhere. Remember, these are “single coils” so you will get some 60 cycle. I would imagine that the bridge ground could be the culprit, but could be vol/tone cavity or pups themselves. I am not home near the studio so can’t help look for exact location of bridge for ground location. Most normally run the ground to the bridge on the plate or the bridge grommets themselves. You should be able to find it, but yes, you may have to do a bit of a setup after pulling the bridge.
      It wouldn’t/shouldn’t be a big deal, but just depends on what you are willing to do. If not comfortable doing that, they did give you the option of sending it back, but yeah I get the hesitation to do so. Just a pain…

      Something wrong Dean….it shouldn’t be making that much noise as you describe. The question is are you willing to chase down what is causing it? Could be easy….could be a more involved issue. Most guitars will require some setup….especially to specific players, but for the price of the guitar, it should certainly be “playable”. I am not sure what you mean about the “they sell a stop thing” and having that installed with a setup? I would send it back to them and request another one. I know that now takes more time, but at least you “should” get a guitar without the noise issues and you can focus your attention to just setting it up how you like it without having to chase down noise/grounding or other more serious issues.

    Hey I just bought this guitar second hand and I was fully aware that these guitars needed some setup to reach their full potential, so I ordered a 0.5 mm and a 1 mm shim like I’ve seen people on TH-cam and Reddit say to do, but I got the guitar and was playing with it and noticed the pickups buzz a lot, like the the point of sounding like overdrive when my amp is completely clean. Even when I put effects on like reverb or delay it makes an unbearable static buzz sound. I plugged my strat into my amp to see if one of my cords were bad or if there was some interference, but my strat sang crystal clear. I’m just wondering if this is a common problem with these guitars and what the solution would be, thanks.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      First…thanks for stopping in to the channel….appreciate it! I am not aware of any inherent problems with the Jazzmaster pickups on the Classic Vibe. In fact, the pickups are one of the main reasons I went with the CV over the J. Mascis version which uses a more traditional type of P90. Sounds like a bad ground or solder joint somewhere in the wiring. Is the guitar quiet when just plugged in and amp on? Does the noise go away or quiet down when touching the bridge or strings, pots? Are the pickups raised to high, hitting the bottom of the strings when playing? Try rolling off the vol/tone and bringing the amp volume up….still static? These pickups are still “single coil” and as such, you will get a bit of noise (as all single coils do) but it shouldn’t be anything like you describe. I would be looking at a bad ground, either at the bridge, output jack, or perhaps the last owner did some work and didn’t reconnect a pot or ground.

      @@JimmyStewart1 when the guitar is plugged into the amp and amp is on there is some hum, but when I touch the strings, bridge, and pickups there is more static sound. I tried turning the guitar volume/tone down and amp volume up but that staticky distortion sound is still there, it’s most prominent when switching between chords or bending notes. I’m not much of a guitar tech but my first thought was that something wasn’t soldered right cause I’ve had similar things happen with pedals. So would I be worth bringing into a guitar shop to get checked out or do you think it’s something that I’d be able to sort out on my own.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shmoi1576
      Well, I guess it all depends on what your skill level is and what could be the issue. A simple bad solder joint, or bad/missing ground is not a big deal. If you have a multi-meter or if you can find/track down the issue. Could be simply a bad connection in the output jack (try wiggle or sight inspection) could be the ground came loose or prior owner was working on something and didn’t connect bridge ground…hard to tell without seeing the guitar. If you have a local tech around, it may be beneficial to bring it in for a checkup as it could be something you don’t have the expertise or time/tools to track down and fix. Check the obvious stuff first like jack, pots, pups to see if there is a loose wire/missing wire or bad connection.

I believe the Vintage and Classic Vibe models of the Jazzmaster are quite similar as far as the bridge and trem system used in them. Based on that, I would think that depending on string gauge and type of playing you do, the same types of setup techniques would probably be beneficial. Thanks again for stopping in to the channel!! 👍🎸

    This video got a little late to me, I already set up my brand new CV JM last week, I didn't miss any step, put a pack of 11-48s in there pitched back the neck, got up the bridge and everything fell into place, really nice guitar I'm loving the tones it gives you clean or distorted. Thanks anyway Jimmy, you did a nice job.

      Yeah…sorry! It was a tough video to shoot for me, and my plan for setting up the guitar initially didn’t include filming it. Hey Chief! If you have a minute check out a TH-cam video of "Ricky Nelson-Traveling Man' and note James Burton playing right behind Ricky and this is the only time I've ever seen him without a Tele in his hand. Just got my Squier Jazzmaster, I'm amazed at the quality and what even a "higher priced budget guitar" buys today! Do you feel all Jazzmasters would benefit from the shim in the neck?

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will check it out! Congrats on your new Jazzmaster!! As far as neck shim, I would say “most” would benefit from it, but if everything seems good to you are far as playability, action and intonation, then just play it!! You can always do those things later should your style change, or you want lighter gauge strings and start seeing a issue with strings popping out….though the “Mustang style” bridge they used on the CV Squier helps a lot with that! Mine was way off and I knew it as soon as I unboxed it and tuned it up!

    Brilliant vid Jimmy thanks! Am on the verge of buying one of these and glad I watched this! Wonder though why they don’t pop a shim in at the factory or plane the neck pocket to have the right angle in the first place. are actual Fender JMs the same and need the shim? Or is it because doesn’t need the shim with guage 11s or higher? Thanks 🙏 🙂

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for stopping in Neil…I really do appreciate it! I think that they are just leaving it up to the player these days, and getting them “semi” setup. Cuts down on cost, especially on the Squier line.
      As far as I know (don’t own a true Fender JM) they all could benefit from a decent setup. Neck shimming depending on your style of play, string gauge and other factors. I believe in the “older days” Fender would actually shim them. Pretty sure I read about that once…👍🎸

      @neilmcleanmusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JimmyStewart1 most welcome and thanks for replying 🙏 🙂 yeah just kind of feel it would make sense to shim at the factory if shipping with 9s on. They must realise that folks buy and lift out the box and it can’t be very playable, all for the sake of a small wedge of wood! I have a cv 50s strat and had to setup the trem from fixed down to floating but not everyone would know to do that especially beginners or whatever. Thanx for showing your setup sequence !
    I do have a little tip for you on those squires: When you have the strings iff, if you also take of the tremolo, the plate that moves the tremolo mostly has som uneven sharp edges, if you round those edges of the tremolo works smoother without clicking sounds.. this works for pretty much all spuier tremolo’s i have worked on ..

    What is your advice to keep bridge height locked?

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A few winds of Teflon tape (plumbers tape) should do the trick. You could use a dab of loctite, but that’s pretty permanent and may be a issue in the future should you need to readjust the bridge for any reason. Mine is staying in place nicely! 👍

    Would you say that playing .12s or even .13s would eliminate the need for a shim? I expect the heavier gauge would increase the break angle enough. I’m still learning the ropes of doing a proper setup, thanks.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting EGOVACCINE. It very well COULD eliminate the need. Really depends on your playing style and your preference to string height, etc…best way to find out is give it a try and see how it feels/sounds/plays with the heavier gauges. You could always correct after if needed…
      Hope that helps a bit…can’t hurt to give it a try. May have to widen nut slots at those gauges as well. Thanks again for stopping in…👍🎸
