I am 58 years old and I still get excited going into model shops especially Hornby Trains and Radio Control Aircraft !
Mate so do I my other half thinks I'm nuts .
I've been a model builder since I was a small boy, and have been building flying models since the late 1970's.
It is my "Magnificent Obsession" and the sky is my playground.

I live across the wall from Mike. His passion for aircraft is amazing, and he's like an encyclopaedia when he talks about them - I doubt that there's a plane in the world he couldn't tell you about. It's almost equal to his knowledge of nature. A highly intelligent man who doesn't realise it!

Tell mike for me the bug started with the Canadian Lancaster bomber flying over my house every weekend in the warmer months Its a treat to see And with a Escort sometimes of B-25 Or spitfires I also use to see the Concorde flying into Toronto Which now is the same runway for the A380 Or that huge Russian plane

This is why I have a touch over 300 unbuilt model kits stashed!!!
Another 250 built and displayed...and nearly 200 built and spread out across the country(commission builds).
My love for it has been with me for as long as i can remember.
The only other thing i can see myself doing is Space Work. But thats a different kind of passion.
My son is autistic and loves planes. I hope that nurturing his passion leads him to a rewarding career someday!

Does he know of the Boeing 747SP? That’s my favourite airliner because it’s a shortened version of the regular Boeing 747. It’s also quite rare as less than 100 were built.

No dust. Sucked in by all those engines. It's the smell of jet fuel that would get to me.
I was going to say it's a generation thing, those of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s with Airfix etc, but it's heartening to see feedback from millennials who have also got the model kit bug.
I used to buy an Airfix kit every Saturday from Woolworths, with my 2 shilling, 10p pocket money, Jonathan. 1/72nd scale and came in a plastic bag. I remember saving up for a month to buy a Wellington bomber, which cost the princely sum of 7 shillings a 6 pence or 37.5p!
Even into the 80's (my childhood)...when any and every department store still had model kits...even the local pharmacy had kits. I remember, once a month, we'd go to Toys-r-Us and I'd blow my allowance on a kit or two...usually Monogram "snaps"...glue and paint got in the way of kits!!! After some years away from it, I got back to it in '09...built a couple hundred since my break, even have customers and my work is spread out all over the country!
I admire his collection and enthusiasm but these are brought diecast and resin models, not ones he’s made himself

Planes are fascinating and therefore can be appreciated by people of all ages. :) Personally, I have not purchased any model planes, however I used to build models from scratch at one point.
I live across the "pond" from Mike.......and one word sums my feeling up: WOW! ( Starting in 1955, at age 7, the plastic airplane kit bug bit me big time! Continued until the late 90's, THUS I understand Mike more than many viewing this video!) May the kid in us NEVER die!

I love to see/hear guys talk passionately about their collections, no matter what their subject is, it's contagious! And it feels as a relief to see someone's house more cluttered with his hobby than mine is! :)
I'm almost like him, BUT I BUILD ALL MY models from kits, (plastic and resin), and worse, I still have ALL its boxes, and I started in 1955, with Lindberg Line, FROG, Airfix, Aurora, Comet Series, Heller, all the Japanese, and the models from East Countries, and China, you name it.!!!
In the '60s and '70s,I do have the COMPLETE line of ALL the Airfix, FROG, Lindberg Line, and Revell.

And I still keep them ALL.!!!!
And besides that, I was a professional aviator for 42 years.!!!

My mother would scold me as a child and would say in the most hateful way ''You're wasting your money on AIR''. I built Guillows balsa and tissue planes and many of the plastic ones from brands you mention. Over the years I built boats, motorcycles, dune buggies, a house, a workshop and many other things. She pretty much lost her memory in her 80's thanks to Alzheimer's. .
A few months before she passed away at 90, she was crying. By some lucky circumstance she had full recall that afternoon. She was saddened and apologized for saying that thing about wasting money. She said that by building these airplanes at age 5 and through my teens gave me the ability to build so many wonderful things throughout my life. At age 67 I still have many 1:48 scale airplanes hanging from my ceiling. One is a P-51D painted like Bob Loves plane. He flew me in his Mustang twice in one day in 1982. Lucky me. A piston and jet Ace flew me to view a B-25 that was being restored.
I hope you post a video of your collection. Something tells me that you like airplanes...

A single Gemini brand of a Boeing 737 in 1/200 scale runs about $200 each right now..!!!
( and not to mention the older models...I cant imagine how much would one of those models

$200 is for rare planes like the dreamlifter or C-5 galaxy

@@Biggles2498 Hi there! funny you just mentioned the boxes..I had a guy wolfing me around to get my empty boxes, since I had decided to set my planes on display. Glad I did not give them away..did not know how valuable they were..!

It's for the benefit of our overseas friends, who although can speak English, would have difficulty in understanding the many dialects of the language. I also know for a fact that it also applies to many UK nationals who struggle to understand each other due to the variety of dialects

He hasn't bought any in years, Richard. He wouldn't be very well off now, and maybe he feels he has enough - or maybe you never get to that stage with a passion that strong? Not sure, I'd say it's money mainly that has stopped his collecting.
I know Michael!! I ran into him at Dublin Airport during a spotting-trip in 2006, he even took me for a drive around the airport and I gave him a Malev Hungarian Airlines B737 safety-card, he was really happy for it :) He is a very nice man, greatings from Hungary! :)

I love to see stories like this. I still remember my first model kit. It was a B-36 that my dad and I built together.
I feel that the large model collection is a history of aviation in itself , it should be preserved .

I had a similar upbringing, but it was my Grandfather that got me hooked! I can name any airplane flying like you, but built the plastic models of the airplanes. He worked for Boeing as a machinist and would take me to the shop and buy me my next airplane kit! He was a great inspiration to me for my love of anything that flew. I’ve worked in aviation all my life because of him. The U S Air Force working with F-111’s, and now work for Boeing today!

Well, the Concorde only wore BA & AF in real life, and his collection includes multiple what-if paint schemes, and she looks beautiful in every one of them.

Michael this is Michael, Top of the morning to you. I too love the art of building models. I am more into automobile and tractor trailer but built a great deal of military aircraft back in the1970's; they're all gone now. Good luck my friend, live your dream.

I'm an engineer who got into model steam locomotives as a teenager. Its a hobby that has kept me happy for 65 years having built 6 passenger hauling coal fired locos.

I'm going on 53 and I have been doing model kit from WWI for the last 32 years and now I have got 4,657 all researched into the right colour schemes like the real one. I do it because I'm disabled and very passionate about my respect for these brave young men who fought in the Great War and I've turned it into a shrine for them
I think it's pretty normal to retain some of the fascination we had as children, I can remember being 8 or 9 years old going into a hobby shop, seeing all of the model freight trains, and race cars and aircraft, drooling over the detail and intricacy, wishing to be wealthy, for nothing other than the simple desire to own it all. A much simpler and more innocent time. I'm sure if I were to walk into a hobby shop now, I'd still feel that spark.

Met this man just before Christmas in Shannon Airport. Lovely man. Had a great conversation with him. The museum with his models is fantastic. He told me he was down sizing his collection. Hopefully the rest of his collection stays in Irish airports

I collect models too and I love them I love my interest in aviation. I have a Thai A350, Emirates 787-10 virgin Atlantic a350-1000 and a LTU lockheed tristar. Used to have many models small And big I love the l1011 and A350. Fantastic collection there. Probably got rare models I have been looking for years.

Brilliant! I was a medical crewmember on the C-121 Constellation and also on the C-141 Starlifter. Also flew in C-130s. We flew Air Lingus to Shannon from Boston in 2015. Had a great time. Cheers from Upstate NY! Bob
That whole collection probably costs $250,000+ . One Gemini jets plane (which is the most common die cast model airplane maker) can cost upwards of $100 depending on the plane and size
I loved model airplanes as a kid and would build them all the time. I picked up a couple of airplane models in Russia in 1974 when I was there on a High School senior class trip and never assembled them. I still have them to this day and I think all the pieces are there.

More proof that growing old is inevitable, but growing up is very definitely optional. He is a man of my own heart..... yes someone should buy him a museum so he can share this wonderful collection....and yes the VC10 is the most beautiful plane ever to fly....pity it was killed off by greed and subterfuge on the part of Boeing and certain BOAC executives....

There's enough room at Heathrow Airport to create a museum dedicated to this man's incredible passion.

This is my dream, I love collecting model airplanes and can tell you a lot about planes, but not as much as him! He is an amazing collector I have seen nothing like before, keep up the good work!

What a fantastic collection Michael - and as a lifelong aviation enthusiast myself I share your love of the VC10 - the most beautiful aeroplane ever to take to the skies. I noticed in your collection a Boeing 747 (1/44 scale I think) in the old Cathay Pacific colour scheme and I have tried to find transfers for same on Ebay - no luck! Thank you for letting us see some of your brilliant collection - all so well made!
In 1960, at the age of 3, I built my first plastic model airplane with some help from Dad. I still build them, and the problems are the same at age 62 as they were at age 12 - - they take all of my allowance, and I have no place to put them. At the age of 23, I purchased a brand new 1979 MGB Roadster in Brooklands Green. I still have it, less than 20,000 miles on it. I think Mike and I are kindred spirits!
What a beautiful collection. As an avid fan of aviation, I absolutely love this. I have a dream to fly airplanes one day and I would love to have a collection like this man one day!

It is seen that this man has a passion for aircraft modeling being a great collector, those of us who love aviation and are related to it with some of its specialties are collectors of models, whether they are to build or in die cast or resin, I have 50 models of pastic Kits and diecast, it is really exciting and it is like a drug.
I love model planes too and I even collect Lego planes and "remodel" them too

Bless you my friend, I’m glad I’m not alone within this wonderful hobby. I worked 27 years in civil aviation which helped me obtain some beautiful models. I agree that the VC10 is a lovely aircraft, but I prefer the similar looking Russian Ilyushin Il62. Used to see quite a few of them at Shannon back in the 70s/80s as they used the airport as a fuel stop as they had insufficient range to fly direct from Moscow to transatlantic destinations.

I don't collect planes but I still have four wood stick models I built hanging in my spare room and I have a spitfire MK1 waiting for me to finish building it. I'm over 80 yrs old, but I have done this off and on since I was a kid. great therapy.

That went by fast! I backtracked and finally was able to pause at that point. A fanciful dream of AF1 Concorde. We did, though, have a Concorde-like military version, the XB-70.
EverettAviation : President Trump wouldn't have the room in Concorde for all his fat Army and Air Force Generals huffing and puffing about they hate the commies ! (Don't forget lots of Cigar ashtrays as well) as exempt on Air Force One lol.

My sister and I have these diecasts:
Olympic Boeing 747s, C-47 Skytrain, B-27:Flying Fortress, B-25Mitchell, B-24 Liberator, B-29 Superfortress, and my favorite C-17 Globemaster III
We have a few plastic ones, too. F-86 Sabre, MIG-15, another B-24 Liberator, and a P-51 Mustang.
And I put together a Saab J-29 Tunnan model kit.
I love this guy. I have a love for aircraft and I am a aviation nerd. ❤️
I can truly relate, collected aircraft models for almost 8 years now & my bedroom is full of them. There's a lot more in the living room & boxes still waiting for their turn to be displayed.

My dad would take me to the airport (just before the main airport). We'd be looking through the chain link fences and see private Cessnas parked there with other single or dual seater planes. Now I just build fighter planes in 1/48 scale but I think I know where my influence came from just like this gentleman in the video. Dad's are really important in influencing a young person's interest!
