This song was playing on am radio the summer & fall I was 15 & growing up in a small gulf coast town in south Texas. I washed dishes in the kitchen of one of two local restaurants. The double sinks faced huge open windows & the moist air would blow in from the intercostal canal. The rinse sink had a gas burner for sterilization & I wore protective gloves up to my elbows. The steam created when the hot & cold collided was as mesmerizing as this song. As the summer passed, I began to be convinced this song was written about me & for me. @@spicyhot2552 I appreciate your opinion. Mine is the opposite but THIS is the original. The new birth version is the cover. Maybe that is why it is so much different. They put their own soulful spin on it. This was written, composed and released in 1972, New Birth's version was released a year later in 1973. Yes I agree. This song makes me think of a friend I have that I love so much. Her heart is so good. She is thoughtful, kind. She had a baby boy a yr. ago and she is also a wonderful mother. I love her so much. She's come such a long way and I am so proud of her. She had such a hard life and you would never know. I mean she has no anger in her but I do see her sadness and it breaks my heart. She is so good to everyone and ppl take advantage of her. She truly is always paying for a debt she never owes. I would give my life for this beautiful, wonderful women. Prayers for her are always. I pray for her always. I hope she is in my life forever. I wish she was my daughter. I am 57 she is 25. I will always be here for her and I will always protect her. I love you my Gabby girl. You are a star keep shining!
I fully agree with you, I'm from 1961 and everyday I listen to this kind of music from the 1970' and 80's. And I also love Bossa Nova music. Greetings from the Netherlands.
This song commands respect for every woman everywhere who has ever suffered at the hands of an individual, circumstances or society. Millions of women can claim this song as their own. I claimed this song back when it first came out, as I went through early childhood sexual abuse and was emotionally and physically abused by my brothers. This song used to bring me such comfort. It still does, as I now endure emotional abuse from the person I married. What a beautiful and powerful song. I feel a little ashamed to claim this song for my own as so many women have suffered far more horrendously then I have. But, when I play this song, I not only think of myself but I contemplate all the women who deserve to be remembered by this beautiful compassionate song. So many women suffer in silence. This song belongs to all women everywhere! Nobody can ever record it like Skylark did. One of the most beautiful songs of all time.
I wish I could love this comment over and over! My sentiments exactly! So many years, I suffered in silence! When the ones you love take advantage, your spouse, your children, a traumatic childhood! Sometimes you gotta cry and release those heartaches and know that the power and love you possess will set you free.
It's 2022 and I too will never tire of listening to this song. Dorothy Moore's Misty Blue is also one can listen to all day. Music is not the same nowadays.
And it wasn't no such thing as labeled music, meaning it was not black or white radio then, if it sounded good it was played on damn near anywhere on any stations then!!
This song hits me right in the gut. Everytime I hear it, it's like hearing it for the first time ever. Brings tears to my eyes. The lyrics says it all.

It's one of the greatest songs of all time, so original. It crossed the lines of pop, rock and soul. I was a young airman in basic training at the time this song was a hit. The homesick airmen couldn't get enough of this song; I guess it made them reminisce about their girlfriends back home.
