Bonham's drumming and his contribution to the band cannot be overstated. When Bonham died in 1980, the surviving members just knew that Led Zeppelin would never be the same, so they called it a day and disbanded. Bonzo was the hammer of the gods, and I like to think that whenever I hear thunder, it's just Bonham clearing the dust from his drumming kit. RIP Bonzo.

      Yea,, like starting a train.
A huge advantage ,that page exploited, and leaned on heavily.
And doubt JPJ,was any less valuable.
I actually see them as the real band.
With page being a much smaller talent than he has always been called.
And plant being a singer, who really only pulled off the upper range screams for a VERY short period of time.
Ive heard plant sing different versions of every song ,in order to take it easy on his voice.

    • @jamesdavis4598

The name of the song is actually a reference to the reggae sound.
I've never heard anyone (even professional radio DJ's) pronounce this song's name properly in the 50 years that it has existed.
D'yer Mak'er is a play on the country name "Jamaica" as pronounced by someone with a heavy English accent. (They're English, after all)
      D'yer Mak'er = Jamaica = Reggae.

The pronunciation is a pun on the name of the island nation of "Jamaica." You pronounce the D'yer like "jer" and the Mak'er like "maker" -- so the correct way to say it is "jer-maker." It's been tripping up rock and roll DJs for 50 years, and I think it's hilarious. Brad, your comment about the "island vibe" is on point. This song was Led Zeppelin's one (and I think only) foray into a song inspired by reggae. They have the song "Fool in the Rain" (I can't recall if you have reacted to that one or not) which is inspired by calypso, and also has a kind of tropical vibe to it.

We often talk about Bonham's thunder but not his touch, which is on full, glaring display in this gem. Genius.

When Robert Plant pronounces the title of this song it sounds like Jamaica. This is their Reggae joint. See also Boogie With Stu for their response to disco, the Crunge for their tribute to James Brown, Trampled Under Foot for one inspired by Stevie Wonder, The Ocean for their Doo Wop outro, and of course, Kashmir for Moroccan vibes.

You guys are right, this really is a showcase for Bonzo, in many respects. This was a huge radio hit for them. Love the reggae cadence with the piano coming in on the two and the four.
Try In My Time of Dying for John Bonham's premier showcase, or even Fool in the Rain. Cheers!

Love that Lex immediately identified it as having a beach vibe. That's Bonham's alternating double/single snare hits on 2&4. A classic beach song rhythm.

One of my favorites! Most people will pronounce the title as [Dy-er maker], (close to "dire maker"). But the correct pronunciation is actually just like "Jamaica". I believe some or most native Jamaicans spell the country name: "D'yer Maker". The song combines the sounds of Hard Rock and Raggae so perfectly.

Yes, this is a very "drum-centric" song. Zeppelin has many songs that are drum-centric, and Bonzo was great at providing very interesting and varying patterns and fills.
Jimmy Page produced their albums, and he really appreciated great drums to provide a foundation and structure for his guitar work.

One of the great things about Led Zeppelin is that they incorporated a wide swathe of influences into their music so each album sounded like a whole new jam.
Check out Fool in the Rain for a double-take. The album it is from - In through the Out door - is one of my faves.

This is definitely one of Bonham's coolest beats, he totally carries the song, followed by Robert Plant's vocals. He had an amazing ability to mesh his beats with the guitar. They were smart to call it quits after his death as there was no replacing him, and they obviously knew that. Trying that would've been a disaster. RIP BONZO

When reggae started hitting the interna tional scene in the 70s, many bands decided to try it out. Eric Clapton covered a Bob Marley tune, The Stones had a song called 'Hey Nigrita" and Mick Jagger did a guest solo spot on a song with Peter Tosh. Enjoy.
