- Why don't more people go to Shikoku? Here's what there is to do there, and all the things most tourists miss out on!
Shikoku is the main island of Japan least visited by tourists, so it's definitely off the beaten path! Here's a round-up of things to do in Shikoku, Japan, focussing on Kochi prefecture. Including the Shimanto River, water sports and activities like kayaking and rafting, the Niyodo River, hiking, cycling, scenic terraced rice fields, stunning Japanese countryside, quirky museums, sandy beaches and where to go whale watching in Japan. I really enjoy these videos because as you said, usually you get presented with always the same stuff about famous locations. But there is so much more to see and do and therefore a heartfelt thank you for sharing your ideas with us!

Thanks for the vlog. I lived in Tokushima for many years and it was my ambition to own an abandoned house in the Iya Mountains, but it didn't work out. When I first went there in the 1980s I hardly ever saw any tourists or very few foreigners, but the last time I was there I was surprised how much tourism has developed.
I guess as tourism to Japan has increased, there are more people on 2nd/3rd/4th visits venturing further afield than Tokyo and the Golden Route, to these lesser-known areas.
One day I will go , maybe when things calm down and I can get the money to at least starting to get my bucket list done!
Hope you can make it one day! It's impossible to ever finish the bucket list, but you can always have fun trying! :-)

Thank you so much, your video helped me a lot! Gotta go to kochi because i wanted to see the Shimanto River. However, the Niyodo River and Katsurahama Beach are also nice ideas, since they are closer to my hostel. Also thank you for the tipp with the Shikoku rail pass, it will safe me money :) the price is 12,000 yen since May 2023, but it will still be worth it

Hopefully one day I'll be filming travel vlogs in Shikoku!
I'm going because it's the location of the old Tosa han and seeing everything I can related to Sakamoto Ryoma, Takechi Hanpeita, and Okada Izo and co, but this video was very helpful showing me what else is there!
I think planning your trip around what interests you is a great direction to take - follow your own interests and enjoy it, no matter what the top 10 things to do might be!
I'm glad you mentioned the 88 Temple Pilgrimage!! I completed it this summer!
How was it? And how long did it take?
I walked for 3 weeks and made it to Kochi City. Met a couple other pilgrims at a minshuku during a monsoon. Ended up riding with them to complete the Pilgrimage.. I then spent an entire month going all over the country. Was there 9 weeks total. CAN'T WAIT to do it again

About how to get to Shikoku from Tokyo or Osaka, I recommend to use train.
Because, when you cross the Seto Inland Sea, you'll get great view from the train ! 👀

I'm scheduled to move to Shikoku later this year so it's great to see places highlighted there :) Travel between distant prefectures isn't advised atm so it's nice to know I can still satisfy my wanderlust while staying on the island. Thank you for sharing :)

I've been to Shikoku twice, though not in any of the places in this video. There is so much fascinating stuff to see there. My favourite Shikoku memory was the two days I spent in Matsuyama, where it rained the entire time! The photos are really quite hilarious but my lasting memory is how great the soak in the Onsen was at the end of the day. Hopefully, we will all get through this thing soon and be able to get back there :)
Ah that sounds great - happy memories! Good to know there's enough to do in Shikoku that you can go twice and still not touch any of these places! I think the island's bigger than it seems when you look at a map.
I really want to see Bioluminescence also, didn't know you can see it in Japan thou

I am personally much more attracted to history and culture than by nature, so for me Kochi mean Sakamoto Ryoma, a really influential samurai from the bakumatsu period and yosakoi dance, so for sure I would search for things related to it.
Absolutely - go for what interests you the most! I saw some things about the yosakoi dance actually; there was a competition recently to send in a video of your own version!

I could use your expertise. I have bad back problems and can't walk far w/o a lot of pain. Now I'm doing a lot of walking to build my endurance, but at best I will probably only be able to walk 10 minutes unaided. I might bring a walker just in case.
Can you make suggestions of itinerary? I want to see my bff in Fukuoka, see the wisteria gardens and Tokyo and rent a kimono. Other than that, I don't have any 'musts'. No intrest in amusement parks, big museums, aquariums, etc.
Any places I should avoid because of too much walking or walking rugged terrain?
Any places that would be better? I kind of get the impression Kyoto might be a challenge?

Hi, sorry for being slow getting back to you - I was a bit stuck at first as I always end up walking for miles in Japan, but I wanted to come up with some good suggestions for you!
I don't want to put you off, but first a few points to be realistic so you know what to expect. You can end up walking quite a long way even when you take the train in Japan - it's not unusual to come across very long tunnels and long routes to the platforms in the metro. It's also not unusual to come across stairs as the only option in stations. However, a very high percentage of stations in Tokyo are accessible - just not at every exit (and there are multiple exits), so you need to look out for signs to find the accessible route with lifts/escalators. It might be worth budgeting for a few taxi rides to make life easier.
In general, a lot of buildings have lifts and/or escalators, because so many premises aren't at street level and space is at a premium.

In Tokyo, the main area around Asakusa is all quite close together around Senso-Ji (the oldest temple in Tokyo) so that should be ok!
Maybe consider going to some smaller towns - there are lots of places known as "little Kyoto" that are historic but not as big as Kyoto (and they'll be much less crowded too). Or stay for a night in a ryokan - onsen towns are really pretty and often quite compact. You get a hot spring bath, yukata to wear and a fancy meal!
If you're going to Fukuoka, Dazaifu is a really good day trip and the main temple isn't far from the station: th-cam.com/video/U9GVdeHQqTo/w-d-xo.html
In Kyoto, there's a scenic train ride in Arashiyama with lovely views - it's called the Sagano Romantic Train.

In Naoshima (Shikoku) the Benesse Art site has a shuttle bus for people stating in the hotel that goes around the island and collects you from the ferry.
Someone else who has trouble walking a long way suggested taking frequent rest stops to sit and take photos. As a warning, there aren't that many benches in Tokyo (something that frustrates me too!). But look out for small parks, they often have them, or there are lots of cafes.

I think I've settled on Tokyo, especially Asakusa, Kyoto, (maybe Nara?) Saesbo (where my BFF lives) and Kinazawa. I'm thinking about renting bikes for the most waking after the trains, and my folding walker that will fit in the basket for the rest of the walking.

@@cakeswithfaces My Wife is from Kochi Prefecture, I'm moving there soon. I know alot of the really cool parts as I've been a fair few times. I highly recommend 香美市, it's a very beautiful area within a valley.

Don't promite it.. Japan is already slowly being ruined by mass Chinese tourism. Shikoku is beautiful, amazing and (FORTUNATELY) least visited.
I think it'd really help with the problem of overcrowding and overtourism if foreign tourists knew about more places to go and were more spread out, rather than all cramming into the same few spots in Kyoto. I know what you mean, but no gatekeeping here. :-)
