    Ski crampons help if you do a lot of touring up hiking trails. Also, booting up becomes a lot more efficient than sidestepping if the terrain is consistently steep and narrow and does not allow for kick turns.

      I was actually waiting for this comment! So ski crampons wouldn’t have helped at all in this situation because the snow is just so unconsolidated they wouldn’t actually grip.
      The other thing with ski crampons is that the bindings that I’m using particularly were purchased used, and they didn’t come with the little slot that the crampons would go on. It kind of sucks, so I couldn’t use them even if I wanted to. But my other skis that I will be using eventually later this winter are a much better set up for climbing and have crampons with them.
      So they would’ve been pointless. Also boot packing is the last resort when it comes to ski 46.

    Great job! So beautiful in winter with the snow. That was #46 for me back in 1990.

    I never had aspirations to ski, not to mention ski the 46, and I may never, but this is a really, really cool perspective. Thank you for sharing and taking us on this adventure. This was awesome to witness

    I hiked allen for the first time this last summer, can't imagine doing that ascent on skis. Major props

    Amazing job! So nice to have you document your trip the day after I hiked it. Now I get to re-live the experience again and again!

    I am really surprised you didn’t hit any spruce traps on the way down. The deep snow and the tress would have been definitely a factor. Great safe ski down.

    Awesome type 2 fun, but… you did that alone??? My friend, I saw half a dozen moments where things could’ve gone very badly but didn’t. As a fellow backcountry skier: get a buddy out there with ya!

    Great video! I just finished the 46 in February, and didn't really have any intentions of doing the W46, but I've also recently gotten into backcountry skiing/ski touring so I might end up skiing a bunch of these peaks since there isn't too much touring where I'm from (Toronto) and this is still reasonably close (and cheaper than flying out west). Good luck with all your mountain adventures!

    This looks awesome!! On my list, and I'm figuring that skiing it would be less painful than hiking 😅
    I was planning on skiing the first 7 miles, stashing my skis off the beaten path, and then snowshoeing up. What do you think?

      When I hiked it in February, someone in front of me did exactly that. I was super jealous ... it's an incredible winter hike regardless though!

    "Oh wait, gotta start my watch" So relatable haha. Do you have any recommendations for a first set of off track nordic skis? I live in Southern Ontario so we don't have mountains like the Adirondacks but still some hilly areas to ski.

    • @JonathanZaharek
      @JonathanZaharek  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not really Nordic knowledgeable! So I wouldn’t really know where to point you. But I’ve been telling people that if they want to get into some good backcountry cross country to check out Voile skis!

  • @mikestevenson4101

    That was amazing! What would have been the plan if you snapped a ski or broke a binding?

    • @JonathanZaharek
      @JonathanZaharek  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I got ski ties and stuff for binding fixes. But pretty much no different than how you could prepare if you snap or break a snowshoe.

    • @lasulax
      @lasulax 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wonder if a related question is, should you have brought snowshoes along? In addition, just in case?

    • @Palvader
      @Palvader 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Perhaps for a lot of us, yes. But Jonathan is super, super resilient! He would have still hoofed it out with a broken ski. And he would have made us a video about it!
